Eddie RoyalWith Denver Broncos WR Eddie Royal‘s 59-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, the rookie second-round pick out of Virginia Tech set a Broncos single-season rookie record with his fifth touchdown reception. He finished the game with five catches for 84 yards (16.8 avg.) with one touchdown. He also moved into first place in receiving yards (757) by a Denver rookie and also has more receptions (63) than any rookie in club annals.

Royal, who entered the game seventh in the NFL in combined yardage, now has a 50+yard play in four of his last five games.

Obviously I’m glad he’s on our team. One of the things that I like most about him, though, is that he is proof of the principle that WAAAYYYY too many NFL scouts place WAAAYYYY too much emphasis on size, 40 times, or performance in catching drills, and not enough to simply watching the guy perform on the field against real competition. Royal should have gone higher based on his gametime performance in college, but people knocked his size or his hands; thankfully he didn’t and we get to enjoy his sucess.

  • Bucky

We have had some Rookies seriously step up this year, I am so excited to see what this team will look like for the next 5-10 years, especially if we can get some of these rooks signed early, and for lengthy contracts. here’s hopin for a good postseason and a great 09 draft!

  • flbronc

Bravo Eddie! I was stupid to question Shanny for taking you so early- and I’m happy to admit that!

The future of the WR position looks pretty good.

The hardest thing to do in the NFL for a wide receiver is to maintain discipline in route running when the defense is trying its best to confuse and disrupt you. That’s something that Eddie Royal has excelled at, and the discipline he used to do it has made him seem like a veteran on the field. It makes me wonder if scouts underrate that quality, or if it really is so rare that they think nobody has it.

I’ve been thinking, what other rookies are stepping up around the league? Just off the top of my head (not being a homer at all) all the rookies that should be up for rookie of the year are from the Broncos: Clady, Hillis, and Royal. All of them could easily win it.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I don’t know about Hillis, Sam, but Clady and Royal are both making strong cases. If I had a vote, it’d be for #78.

  • Dakota fan

Sam- I agree with you on all 3 of our guys, but honestly, since Matt Ryan in Atlanta has done a FAIR job this year (not good, but fair) and hasn’t gone off the deep end like Vince Young has, do you really think our guys will get any ROY consideration? He’s a QB, for cryin’ out loud. Here’s my prediction on the ROY voting- Royal MIGHT get a sniff, they’ll say Hillis hasn’t played in enough games and Clady?? Give me a break- us fat boys on the o-line NEVER have gotten or will get any love from the voters. He might make the Pro Bowl, but Ryan has sewn up the ROY because of his position.

Bucky- great point about trying to lock these guys up for 5-10 years (contract wise, not Plaxico Burress wise). My guess is that if we lose anyone, it will be Brandon Marshall. I have a buddy who is a Steelers fan, so subsequently, he hates my guts as a football fan. He is ALWAYS complaining that the Steelers raise up such great football players, only to see them head out of town for financially greener pastures. That’s a crock, but free agency has really lowered the likelihood that a team can absolutely dominate, and if the Broncos can manage their cap room and live without a few of the guys who are decent right now, they’re setting themselves up for a VERY bright future.

  • Dakota fan

And by the way, Kyle, I didn’t mean to take anything away from Nalen by commenting about Wiegmann’s awesome performances. Nalen has secured his spot on the ring of fame. Have you heard anything about his rehab? Is he considering retiring? I’d like to see him have one or two more good years in the sun, but since he’s played so good for so long, I’d imagine he’s about worn out physically. Any word?

  • Michael

I really think Clady will get some votes for ROY. Joe Thomas was runner-up last year behind AD and Clady has had a better season while no offense player(Ryan, Johnson, Forte, Flacco) has had as good of a season as Peterson did last year. Will he win, probably not but he probably should.

    Joe Thomas 07:

4 Sacks on 543 pass attempts

    Ryan Clady 08(on pace for):

1 Sack on 604 pass attempts

  • SivNiz

Did you mean .5 sacks or are you projecting another .5 sacks for a total of 1 sack?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Dakota fan – I wasn’t offended at all. I think whomever said that before was just busting your chops. :)

Casey Wiegmann was in BEAST MODE yesterday! I loved it! I’m extremely, extremely happy with CW this season.

  • Michael

SivNiz – Yes, projections show he will give up another 1/2 sack.

I’m looking forward to watching him go up against Peppers when we play Carolina, should be a great match-up to watch.

  • kerry

ill have to say those are pretty impressive numbers for a rookie WR. i remember all the talk from most was that we should take Desean Jackson. but as far as Rookie of the year…i think everybody is forgetting somebody…Chris Johnson. the RB in Tennessee. he will probably get the rookie of the year based on numbers AND the record of the Titans

  • Sam P

Hillis would be the outside shot, but I think he should get some props for stepping into the starting position, and before that he did good at the starting FB position too.

  • Sam P

Ya, that was me that said Kyle was going to ban you. It was just a joke. And, I forgot about Ryan. he’s a QB.. that gets him half the votes right there… which is crap.

  • Steve

We definitely have great rookies. But i dont think clady or royal will win ROY, unfortunately. Here’s how the voting will probably go….
    1. Ryan
    2. Johnson
    3. Royal
    4. Forte
    5. Flacco
    6. Clady

Here’s a projection: Cutler for MVP if we win out

  • kerry

no way we win out. if we clinch then Shanahan will rest guys. Jets have a very easy schedule down the stretch and we wont catch the Titans or Steelers. i think the only way Cutler would win the MVP is if we win out AND run the table in the playoffs.

  • robtink242

i’m reading everyone one’s post about these offensive guys that can win ROY. granted they wont be near ROY conversation we have some rookies on D that going to be studs.

3 years from now if champ isnt playing i wont mind josh bell and jack williams starting. Dj should move to inside forever, with woodyard at wlb. i’m not to sold on larsen but he has played well. barret needs gain some more experience.

but overall this has been the best rookie year i’ve seen in a while.

  • robtink242

hey not to take away from any of our guys on offense they’re some stand outs.

  • Roy

Clady will get dome talk for ROY (unless NFL.com is still stroking LT Jake Long…how does he get nominated for ROTW twice?). Royal should get a sniff too, but I don’t think anyone is going to beat out Matt Ryan, and deservedly so. That guy has played at a consistantly high level all year in one of the most demanding (as far as mentally and dealing with the spot light that comes with being a QB) positions on the field. Johnson and Forte have been great for their teams. Overall, if there was an award for best class of rookies on a team, I think we would win, hands down.

  • Bucky

MVP is (supposed to be) a regular season award Kerry so i have to say, as much as i love Cutler, that i agree that there is no way he gets it, he is not even in conversation for it from anything i have heard, so far its all been on Warner Brees and Collins, some mention of some Titans D line guys and one or two morons babbling about Favre and that’s about it. Cutler has been to inconsistent this year to make the list, you don’t have those games against the Raiders and the Chiefs and still make MVP, win out or not.

  • T-Money

I like Kerry’s “reality thoughts” cause lately they seem to be wrong. I’m already pumped up for this Sunday. I can’t wait to bust out my #24 jersey again.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

If the Broncos finish strong, Jay Cutler will DEFINITELY be back in the MVP conversation. He’s third in passing yards and has less interceptions than Drew Brees.

  • Rob Bronco

The only award we care about is the Lombardi trophy, so I’m fine with the ROY award going to Matt Ryan. That guy is a force to be reckoned with, and he’s only going to get better. I think we need to focus on keeping Cutler on his feet, get Marshall involved more (we will need a deep threat during the playoffs), and put some pressure on the QB!!!! I am still frustrated with our D. I know we beat the Jets (a game I didn’t think we were going to win), but if we want a shot at attending the Big Dance, we’ve got to get at the QB. If we don’t. we are going to get killed. Kyle, I’ve been screaming that since the first snap this season.

  • http://broncos-denver-broncos.blogspot.com/ Ian Henson

Jay Cutler is definitely back in MVP conversations. He slumped for a game or two, but Sunday’s performance against the Jets- in the RAIN will do it.

  • T-Money

You can’t bash Cutler for a few bad games and not do the same to either Brees or Warner. I think he’s in the hunt at the very least.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

i’d give rivers mvp. The way he’s played this year has had such a huge impact on not just the broncos season but the afc as a whole. He deserves a parade. Although i’d probably place my real vote with eli.

Agree with kerry about johnson for rookie of the year although it’ll be ryan if the falcons make the playoffs. If nothing else johnson was my fantasy steal of the year.

Shanny’s bff jeff fisher for coach of the year.

  • jcampb72

Id rather have two top 5 rooks than 1 rookie of the year.

  • Bucky

I’m not bashing Cutler, I’m just saying he has taken him self out of the conversation for the year, and it really isnt just one or two bad games, it is one two-4 really bad games against really bad teams. Don’t get me wrong here, I am a Cutler fanatic, and if he is re entered into the MVP conversation i will be thrilled. I just dont see it happening.

As for my comments on Brees and such, I was not saying who i thought deserved the award i was mentioning who i have heard talked about, I dont think brees deserves to be in the conversation any more than i think Favre does, but who i mentioned before is who has been talked about so far, at least that i have heard of.
