Denver Broncos rookie wide receiver Eddie Royal has claimed a piece of franchise history. Royal set the franchise record Thursday for season total receptions and receiving yards by a rookie. In eight games (he missed one game this season), Royal has tallied 625 receiving yards, with seven games still to play.

With four touchdowns on the year, Royal is also tied for first in the Broncos franchise record books in rookie receiving touchdowns.

His 164-yards, 27.3 avg., 1 TD performance Thursday added him in a few other record books as well. In particular, his 93-yard touchdown catch was the second longest by a rookie in franchise annals, and fourth longest among all players. He now has an NFL-leading four games with over 100 yards.

As cool as that is, his 93-yard catch might have served a more important purpose. That play might just be the catalyst the Broncos need – the proverbial spark we’ve been looking for. The Broncos have one helluva rookie in Royal, and the more he gets involved in this offense, the better.

Kyle was that a yardage record for a season? or was it for a single game? who’d he tie on the td record?

either way, it’s awesome! here’s to a great career with the broncos!

  • Roy

I think you hit the nail on the head with the “more he gets involved ” statement. I look forward to a couple of reverses, maybe a direct snap, and some quick hits akin to what Wes Welker does for New England. Without a solid run game we have to find a way to get our playmakers more involved, if that mean dusting the trick plays off, so be it.

By my book, this makes three games Royal has won for us: @ oakland where Royal had an amazing game which was needed because Marshall was suspended, vs SD where Royal caught the game winning TD & 2 point conversion, and now this huge catch vs Cleveland.

The only other rookie WR I can think of who has had this much of an impact was Randy Moss.

    For starters: Rookies
This was the best draft class we could have possibly imagined. NFL.com stated Royal, Hillis, and Clady all in their midseason All-Rookie team. Eddie Royal, a local favorite in my area (seeing how I’m from the Washington D.C. area and his high school is less than an hour from mine). Being at the age of 21 going to a college 15 minutes away from Virgnia Tech, lets me meet me people currently who know him/played with him/against him. All good things I’ve heard. Yes, he is a fantasy favorite here.

    Secondly: Tight Ends
Thank the lord Tony Scheffler is back. I believe all us loyal fans have noticed the lack of offensive spark (quoting Kyle). Now when Scheffler is back, Jackson, and Graham stepping up our offense with a force to be reckoned with.

    Moving on: Running backs
Let us pray… for many things.
    1) Torain’s MRI
    2) Young’s groin
    3) The emergence of Hillis
    4) Not bringing Tatum Bell back
I know bringing Bell back is an extreme comment, but I’m just saying, I dont even want to think about the bell hop gone wrong on this team. I have faith in Hillis as a Westbrook style player which I would like to see more, but hey… I’m not Jeremey Bates.

    Closing up: Defense/Injuries
I mean their the same thing right? Our start linebacker core is out… which we were weak at before. However, according to profootballtalk.com, Champ Bailey might be starting next week against the Falcons. I’m not sure how I feel about that because I don’t want him hurting himself again, however we need him… badly. All in all, this game was great, it’s what us hurting denver fans needed. Lets keep our heads up and our jerseys on, because the season ain’t over yet.

The only other competition Eddie Royal should have as far as offensive rookie of the year goes is Ryan Clady. Each of them should at least be in the coversation. And Payton effing Hillis!! Dude is an athelete!! This draft class rivals the class of 2006!!

  • TJ

Oh yeah. They should be getting a Pro Bowl nod as well!!

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

flbronc — edited for clarification, it’s the season total.

TD record… I’d have to double check, but I think it’s actually a three-way tie with he, Rick Upchurch, and someone else… again, have to double-check…

    Mike Bell maybe?

  • T-Money

So do we move him to running back?

  • GreasyQtip

Royal is awsome, I can’t even count how many times ive thought about how cool a team would be with a TO and Steve Smith, or a Chad Johnson and Santana Moss. Like how sweet does that sound, well we found it, im not ready to call our two guys those guys YET, but they certainly look like the real deal, and we better lock up Marshall long term, with Schef and Stokley in there our offense can score on anybody. I really think Chad Jackson might be the 4th WR weve been looking for

  • MikeY55

i love eddie royal but honestly… we need arunnibg back god damn did losing torain hurt!!! he was getting 8 yards a run in his lil streak there just first down after first down after first down! it helps alot with jay… Jay is one of the bes QB’s in the league but he isn’t afraid to throw a risky pass.. thats why we need a running game to let the opposiing D play a lil more honest… if we had a decent running game this year jay cutler would have 7 less interceptions and 10 more touchdowns easily

  • MikeY55

and putting hillis on a westbrook level is an extreme statement i like hillis just as much as the other but he ain’t no westbrook

  • MikeY55

chris johnson in tennesse or matt ryan will probably win the rookie of the year though :(

  • T-Money

Matt ryan will take it. The media is glued to his pretty boy butt. Royal is doing his job and flying under the radar. I think he likes the lack of attention, but that’s pure speculation.

  • flbronc

    thanks for clarification kyle!

lets get him some more to that total and a fifth td next weekend!!

  • http://www.derailedink.com Dink

I guess we now know What JC Would Do? Throw it to His Rookiness Eddie Royale, who added some much needed cheddar to the Broncos game. They’re gonna keep em on the wing and wait for some injuries to heal and we’ll see the donkey buck once again!

  • mr. football

My son played against Eddie Royal in high school in NVA and he stopped him every time.
