On a hot summer afternoon, the Denver Broncos hosted the New Orleans Saints, and as many predicted, it was a high scoring affair for both sides. Denver started the game well, quickly taking the game to 21-3 and looking to have a comfortable lead. But sudden poor play from Cutler and the Saints finding weaknesses in the Denver defense led to that lead evaporating. And though Denver never trailed, with the defense suddenly suspect, there was a strong sense that the game was really on the line if the offense couldn’t keep it together.

Cutler threw a few extraordinarily bad passes today, and didn’t quite look himself after the first quarter. He threw a few misses that just didn’t make a lot of sense, and camera closeups showed the frustration on his face. Even so, Cutler ended the game 21 for 34 with 2 TDs and an int, and the Broncos scored 34 points (albeit 7 of them on defense) to make 3 straight games with 30+ points. This is a sharp contrast to the offense of the previous few seasons which figured to have a high scoring game if the offense got above 20 points. After watching this offense for 3 games, scoring 24 points would be disappointing.

Special teams showed significant improvement, giving up 30 yards on punts and 60 yards on kicks, and gaining 22 yards on punts and 97 yards on kicks. Nothing terribly exciting happened on returns for either team, which is definitely better than having a kick or two give up big yardage and giving the opposing offense a short field. Wesley Woodyard was named special teams captain for this game, and I don’t know if that had anything to do with the unit’s improvement, I am all for anything that gives Woodyard playing time.

The defense gave up over 500 yards, 421 of them in the air, and let the Saints have 4 touchdowns. With all that, the defense managed to strip the ball and run it back for a TD and put up two crucial goal line stops which bailed the offense out when it failed to stay on the field and score points. Add two missed field goals by Grammatica and there’s a definite feeling that the Broncos squeaked by with this one. At the end of the game, despite the defense being the reason the Broncos might lose the game, the defense ended up being the reason the Broncos won the game. Despite giving up two turnovers on offense, the defense held when they needed it most and kept the Saints from taking advantage of a Tony Scheffler fumble.

But squeaker or not, it’s a win and the Broncos advance to 3-0. With the Chiefs unable to beat any team not from St. Louis, the Raiders only able to beat teams from St Louis and Kansas City, and the Chargers yet to play, at worst the Broncos have a two game lead in the division, no matter what the Chargers do tomorrow.

Ironically, if the Chargers find a way to lose tomorrow, the Raiders will be second in the division.

What did I see in this game? Jay Cutler had a bad game, the team gave up two turnovers and forced none, and still put up 34 points. Brandon Marshall put up 155 yards and leads the league for the week in receiving yards, discounting the two prime time games. Eddie Royal has come back down to earth in stats, but he is still putting up important receptions, and Stokely is still completely capable of making that key 3rd down catch to move the chains. Even with two turnovers, the offense is a scoring machine.

The defense is a work in progress that will probably never look like a truly solid defense. I’ve been saying since the offseason, though, that I never expected the defense to become anything more than average. Currently it’s a little below average, but things are always a little different when you’re playing with a lead, especially when your opposing quarterback is a pro bowler. We have serious problems in pass coverage; sure, Brees didn’t challenge Bailey much but the team spent a lot of time in zone and Brees can pick a zone apart without pressure.

And we did get to Brees but not often enough nor quickly enough. We need a complement to Dumervil. Thomas was looking good some of the time, but not enough. I expected a little more from Robertson; but he was nearly invisible in this game. We need to get our d-line into the backfield more and cause havoc. We can’t expect the nickel corner to cover as well as Champ Bailey.

On the other hand, DJ Williams had 14 tackles and 2 assists. He was everywhere on the field; a total monster. Webster is playing had but he is merely average. Boss Bailey seems to be doing okay back there, but perhaps isn’t having the effect we hoped for. It seems like the defense still has communication problems, and the Saints were able to make big pickups when we had guys out of position.

In the preseason, I had the Broncos as a wild card team. Now we might win the division. I think we’re in a good position to go deep in the playoffs, but with this defense we’re not yet a Superbowl team. Still, the Colts had a defense worse than this and they managed to shore it up by the end of the season and did solid in the playoffs. We are not without hope. And during camp, I wasn’t even thinking of the team as true contenders. Now, there is a glimmer, a bare possibility that a high powered offense can carry the team long enough for the defense to figure out what it needs to work on.

At the end of the day, a win is a win, and the team is undefeated. The defense needs work, but it shut down the Saints when it had to. The potential is there. As fans, I think we have to be patient. The most important thing is that this is a young team, with a lot of talent. This team can build on anything it accomplishes this season and has the potential to become a dynasty team.

Think about it. A Broncos dynasty would be something, wouldn’t it?

A dynasty would be something. Nice post Earl.

Don’t forget about our one big turnover – fumble return for a TD!

I don’t think Cutler did all that bad. He had a sluggish start and a few bad passes, but had some beautiful tosses to end the game. 90+ passer rating is nothing to shake a stick at.

I also think we need to not under value what impact Torian will have when he comes back. I know he is just a rookie but he could be that every down back we have been looking for. If that is the case it would greatly enhance the running game, especially on third and short.

Kyle, that was kind of my point. He had a ‘bad game’. It was a fantastic game by other standards.

Slow down there, fellow Bronco lovers. I’m not ready to start talking post season and especially not Dynasty after only three games. Without a little lady luck we could easily be 1-2 right now.
The offense started well today but quickly fell off, Cutler being the biggest culprit. His throws lacked confidence and zing. I almost wondered if he was having a bad blood sugar day.
The defense showed some sparks today that we have not seen and some key stops when it counted but still lack that ability to really dominate. Third downs need a lot of work.
I’m thrilled to be 3-0 but I want to see this team take charge in all three phases and show us that we don’t need so much lady luck!

Nice followup to the game Earl, but I have to seriously disagree with you on Cutler. I wouldn’t call that a bad game by a long shot. He had one turnover that was his fault through the whole game. Still had more touchdowns to ints and looked like a pro bowler for the third straight game. He had a few errant passes that were reminders of last year, but if you notice the Saints put more pressure on Cutler than the Raiders or the Chargers in previous weeks. He had to scramble out of the pocket and make bad throws or throw aways a little more this week. Still looking like a top 5 QB in the league to me though.

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

Josh: Absolutely. Mostly the ‘bad game’ comments have to do with some bad throws he made, the poor int. Cutler said himself after the game that he made some poor throws. Compartively this is his worst game of the season. Trust me, I’m delighted that we can call this kind of performance a bad game.

Okay, all this shit people keep saying about how we just get “lucky” and win instead of earning it, is really pissing me off. Cutler had an off day compared to what he usually has. Period. Did the offense still not put up 34 points (given 7 from defense)?? Did our defense not make stops when it needs to? Is no one else aware that if Gramatica would have made that last field goal that we would have done some other play calling rather than just time killing runs? Holy shit, does no one see the talent in this team or is everything based off luck? The SD game had a call go our way, but shit happens in football, you win and lose calls. Did we not capitalize on it?? Was is that we have so much damn luck that thats the reason why we also got the 2 point conversion? Some of you guys need to wake up and realize that not everything is luck. People need to realize that Denver has the best offense in the league as far as scoring goes, and its not LUCK. THERE GOOD. So lets stop with all the “lucky” bullshit. Thanks.

LorDog: My comments about dynasty are not based so much on this season as the personnel we have and what this team is building through draft picks. Lots of young talent, lots of names that are really going to matter. If we can continue to build through the draft, this team has the ability to be very competetive for many years.

  • LorDog

With all do respect, Joe, two missed field goals by a league veteran (Grammatica) is pretty darn lucky.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Joe

Ya, but with all do respect, what makes you think that that field goal would have decided the game at the very end? What if he made it? Was there no chance that Denver would have marched down the field and scored again? Or would Denver be already counted out? This is where I’m coming from….

  • LorDog

Miles: With that I’m with you. I certainly like the future a lot more with the younger team. Especially on the O-line!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Joe

Its in games like this where I wish Gramatica would have made that last field goal so we could march down the field and score and win. Then you could not say this win had anything to do with luck .

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

Joe: I hear that. I have a lot of faith that with 1:50 and a timeout, Cutler can get down the field and score. We’ve seen that offense do it. They are comfortable with each other and Cutler handles that particular pressure very, very well. The hurry up makes defenses back off, too, which only improves their chances.

And Prater hasn’t missed one yet this season, but he also hasn’t had to make a game-winning kick, either.

  • BroncoFan18

Missing a field goal has nothing to do with luck. You either make it or you don’t. Period. Do you think Saints fans are saying we got lucky? No. They are saying their kicker blew it.

Stopping them on fourth and goal isn’t lucky. That’s good defense. Stopping them on third and one late in the game isn’t luck either. We had 34 pts. They had 32. Period.

Good post Earl. I’ve got a lot more to say about the game, but I wanted to say great job on the live blog once again.

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

Ian: Like all teams I feel like we’re definitely learning to work together and you and Kyle both have been doing stellar jobs in the live blog as well! We’re starting to get a feel for roles and that smooths out our presentation, I think. We’ll get better with practice!

  • So Cal Den Fan

I’ll take the win! Our defense played ok not great but enough to get the win. I just wish denver had a go for the throat mind set. The last few years we started good and get a lead and in the the third quarter we start flat and let them back in the game. If this team wants to take the next step and get back to winning super bowls, we need to finish off the other team. We should had killed the saints. Thats the biggest difference I see in this team as conpaired to 1997-98, back then we had a team down we finished them off. This team has the talent I just can’t put my finger on why we can’t finish them off is it the play calling or executions in the third quarter. All I know if we want to do some damage this year we need to get better on defense and finishing off other teams. Go Broncos !!!!!!

I am tired of hearing well Denver could be 1-2 last I checked THEY ARE NOT> 3-0 baby. There is a team in NE that would love that or in Indy. The bottom line that Denver is an up anc coming YOUNG team. Denver scored 34 and looked off most of the day. The defense made important stops when needed. BTW since when has Gramatica ever been considered a good kicker. Never, I have watched this league for 30+ years. There is a reason Martina keeps bouncing around.
