D.J. Williams

ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson reported that the Denver Broncos and the agent of linebacker D.J. Williams are in serious talks, regarding a contract extension.

Williams, last season at middle linebacker finished second in the NFL in tackles (141). He was recently voted defensive captain alongside Champ Bailey.

If all goes will with Williams, the Broncos could look to extend wide receiver Brandon Marshall and defensive end Elvis Dumervil— both will be free agents following the 2009 season.

UPDATE: According to Adam Schefter at NFL Network the deal is done. Five-years, 32 million and 16 million guaranteed dollars. This deal puts him amongst the highest paid “non-pass rushing” linebackers in the NFL.

In an NFL where players are holding out and complaining about the disloyalty their teams are showing them, by not offering contract extensions following a good season. It’s nice to see that Denver is holding true to character and acting as the first-class organization they’re known as in the NFL.

There’s not a player more deserving, in Denver, of an extension than D.J. Williams. He’s gone from position to position without a single word in the media. A true leader in Denver who leads by, well, leading.

I also think this might be very smart business. I do not know how much cap room we have free right now but if we can use whatever we have left this year to give DJ the mammoth signing bonus that a player like him will get, it will make it more feasible to sign Doom and B. Marsh next year.

I honestly do not understand why more teams do not do things like this and just let cap space go to waste and then be in a tight spot trying to give multiple players signing bonuses down the line.

Just my thoughts on the matter, and yeah it is pretty stand up of Denver.

It’s off the top of my head, but I remember in early August them having somewhere around 5 million in cap space. However, I could be completely wrong…

Id prefer to see a contract extension signed towards the end of the season or the middle at worst. I don’t care how you cut it, contract years are always big years. They shouldn’t be but they are.

It’s official, he signed a 5 year 32 million dollar deal with 13 million guaranteed! I’m relieved because I thought we were gonna lose him

That’s from Adam Sheffter, so thats pretty much official….Dario I agree with you but if he has too big a year, then alot of times the player wants to test the waters and get the biggest deal and that might be out of our price range.

Great news, DJ is a great player. He is extremely versatile so we are set if anything goes wrong.

Dario I think the only problem with waiting to mid-year is you cannot assign as much of the contract to this year’s salary cap. I am not sure of the specific rules and could be wrong but, I think that is why we see all these big deals getting done right before the season kicks off.

Plus I do not think we have to worry about DJ bringing it every week. He is a player that is pretty self motivated.

I wouldn’t worry about DJ and the contract year. DJ is a class act. He will play to his utmost, not to try and get the payout but because he is a competitive warrior. He wants to be the best, he wants to win.

    IM SO GITTY!

  • Danish Denver-fan!

This is great. We keep a great player in the fold and we get some serious cap-hit out of the way. We will need space for when that ’06 class needs resigning!

will we have enough money for dumervil and marshall @ the end of the season?

  • http://broncos-denver-broncos.blogspot.com/ Ian Henson

    Merc-

Right now they’re both RFA’s in 2009, so if Denver really got desperate with money or wanted to be nasty, holding on to either could be fairly easy. At the very least for one season beyond 2009.

I think we will have quite a bit of cap space at the end of this year. If I remember correctly we have a lot of dead money coming off our cap this year.

I also think Brandon Marshall might give a little home town discount to show his gratefulness for how the whole organization has poured into him and stood by his side through all of his troubles.

    oh ok thanxs man

MNF just got a lot more interesting. It will now be for first place in the division. Don’t want to blow it out of proportion but any loss by the Chargers is HUGE!
