The Denver Broncos signed veteran corner back Tyrone Poole on Wednesday, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. The 13-year veteran most recently spent time with the Houston Texans in 2007. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Poole is a journeyman by every meaning of the word, spending time in New England, Indianapolis, and Carolina in addition to a brief stint in Denver in 2002 and the aforementioned season in Houston. Last year Poole did not see any game action.

Christian Morton, who delivered the powerful sack during Saturday’s preseason game on a cornerback blitz, was waived to make room for Poole on the roster.

Yesterday, the Broncos signed Wale Dada… that was strange enough – why in the world do the Broncos feel they need to keep addressing the cornerback position? I’m much more concerned about the defensive line and linebacker position (especially after two injuries at Sam) than I am about our secondary. Maybe they’re unhappy with what they saw in special teams, I dunno. Your thoughts?

I don’t get this at all. Christian Morton, although not a star by any means, looked decent. Why add a 13 year vetran who doesn’t appear to be that much better than a young guy? Especially when its a position we’re not in need to fill. Paymah and Foxy look great, and Champ is Champ… granted I’m not sure Bly is the best, but still, we don’t need any more depth here.

My thought is, “Who’s hurt worse than we’re being told?”

  • Steve

or more glass half full thinking: which CB are we sending in a trade to get a bruiser RB or more durable SAM? although i like bly (i think people are more down on him than he deserves), we could work with dfox at #2 and paymah in nickel, esp with jack looking good.

What’s wierd is our CB position is pretty well locked, right? Champ, Dre, Foxworth, Paymah and Williams. They can rotate the #6 and #7 slot all they like but unless they’re going to put Williams on the practice squad, and want to carry a 5th CB (which is dubious anyway) then its pointless.

  • adam

Steve, who in the world do you think we’re trying to trade for? Interesting thought, I just can’t imagine who we’d be after.

  • Jordan

That’s an interesting point about a trade. I realize that’s its blasphemy in Denver, but I’ll say it anyway: If management thinks that Foxworth, Paymah, and Williams are playing well enough, think of what Champ would be worth in trade… I don’t like it, but he’s made a few comments about the younger corners around the league that aren’t as good getting big time contracts. With Denver strapped for cash, would the team be able to pay him what he’d be worth in new contract negotiations? I know that it’s thinking far ahead, but you never know.

  • Steve

maroney would be sweet. obviously not straight up for any of our CBs but champ, so it would have to be a package deal. hasn’t there been some friction there? don’t they need young CBs?

  • adam

Dude, Maroney for Champ…I’d take that today.

  • Roy

Maroney for Champ? do you have rocks in your head? Fact: Maroney is yet to have an injury free year. Fact: the Pats are tlking about keeping 5 RB’s. Do you think they would considder keeping so many if Maroney was durable? Probably not.

  • BH

Shanahan said when he drafted Williams a team had to be five deep at CB. Maybe Williams is not developing at a rate that would allow the team to consider themselves to be “five deep” when the season begins.

  • adam

Roy, I think I agree with you regarding Maroney vs. Champ. Except, how much do you want to pay a 32 year-old corner because he’s almost due (next year?) and he’s going to command a lot of cash. However, after I wrote that I thought, “…could we afford to lose his leadership.”
Lets be honest, Champ wasn’t Champ last year. Maybe it was the D-Line, I guess we’ll see.

Champ’s year really wasn’t that bad at all. http://broncotalk.net/2008/01/dont-diss-bailey-for-all-pro/

Christian Morton has a few pentalties in the Houston game and despite that great sack was beat the majority of the time. I’m glad we picked up Poole. I dont want to deal with another Rock Alexander.

  • rcsodak

In an interview by the DMN, Shanny said the moves were simply because the two that were cut wouldn’t have made the team.

    Seems simple enough.

    Dude, Morton was awful.

Earl’s right. Poole and this Wally guy are just camp bodies.
