The backup quarterback spot is never the most-watched battle in camp. It’s not the flashiest competition, and its result rarely has a large impact on the field. Nevertheless, an unsuspected battle is taking place thus far at Broncos camp, with the incumbent slowly losing his grip on the position.

Patrick Ramsey, by all accounts, has looked very poor thus far in camp. Today was no exception – he was the only Broncos QB responsible for an interception. It isn’t the first I’ve heard of his struggles – word is his passes are wildly inaccurate and he’s been off target all camp.

Meanwhile, I’m hearing great things about Darrell Hackney, the team’s 3rd quarterback who suited up for the second half of the season last year but never broke the lineup. Hackney has had limited snaps in practice with the third unit, but he’s taken advantage of the few chances he’s gotten by throwing the football well.

Ramsey coming off the bench for the Lions game last year was a rude awakening for me, and I’ve never been a fan of him as our backup QB since. It’s been five days of camp now, and I’m still hearing about Ramsey’s struggles. It’s time for the Broncos to bite the million dollar bullet and give Hackney a chance. Let him take reps with the second unit. Let’s see what the kid can do.

No kidding, I don’t think I’ve ever rooted for a Broncos QB to lose his position this much since Bubby Brister in the 99 preseason.

I am in total agreement. Have never liked him. I thought his never being able to beat out Brunell in Wash would have been a sign he isnt that good

We normally agree on things, but I’ve not given up on Ramsey yet. Yes, I would have rather had Brad Johnson backing up The Kid, just for the experience and maturity Johnson would have brought to the table. But when that didn’t happen I was comfortable with Ramsey as a backup.

I’ve also heard rumors that he’s struggled a bit this off-season, but having one INT on the fifth day of camp isn’t enough (all by itself) to cause me to thow in the towel.

That said, I like Hackney a lot. I hope he does gets a chance to get more reps and can continue to take advantage of those, but I’m not signing up for the sack Ramsey bandwagon…. yet. :)

That’s a fair point, but I’m less concerned about the one interception than the consistent reports of his inaccuracy. I understand Hackney is a bit short for a pro QB, but he still seems to be managing his throws better.

Kubiak! Can we have Van Pelt back?

  • Ryan

Didn’t the Houstons cut Van Pelt and isn’t he playing soccer somewhere in Canada now?

    I don’t know but I liked BVP, too. :(

  • Joey

BVP is playing soccer in Santa Barbara, CA. Apparently he was one of the top goal scorers in the league.

@Josh Temple: Kubiak! Can we have you back?!
