Lorenzo Neal

Four time Pro Bowler Lorenzo Neal finds himself oddly still on the market – due both to injury and age (he’s 37), Neal has had difficulty landing with another team since his departure from the San Diego Chargers at the end of last season. Now he’s setting the record straight, talking to Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, and saying any drop in his game was due to the new scheme brought by Norv Turner, not by a lack of talent.

What’s more, several NFC scouts agree.

“I don’t know how that guy can still be on the street,” says a high-ranking front-office executive for an NFC team. “If you want someone who can light up a defender on an ‘iso’ block, that’s your guy.”

The article goes on to talk about Neal as a leader in the locker room and his work ethic.

Since Travis Henry‘s release, the Broncos have an open roster spot. It appears Neal is healthy, and he lists the Broncos among three teams he’d like to play for (the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers are the others – nothing like a big market team to revitalize your career). Neal is dangerously close to 40, but just came off his third consecutive Pro Bowl. Is he worth signing? The Broncos have already begun implementing their base offense – is it too late to add him?

i’d love to see him for his leadership and blocking ability. the only reason that i wouldnt want him here if he were to take a spot from a young talent. if we have the room, i think that we should do it.

When was the last time we had a power FB? I’d like to see Selvin runnin’ by a blown up linebacker. I know Mike likes the receiving types but I think it may be time for an exception and get a pure blocker.

Lorenzo Neal is one of the best FB’s in NFL history. Looking at him, even at his age, is a no-brainer.

we have to get this guy! that would be so great! not only is he one of the greatest full backs to play the game but he comes from our division rival Chargers. You know he’ll want to play twice as hard against them to show them up.

I dunno. It seems like teams don’t like the pure fullback anymore. There’s only a few teams that use one; and we’ve been slowly moving away from the fullback for a few years now. I find it rather curious, honestly.

    Two things that impress me…

First is his respectful attitude toward his former team. As Walker proved recently, today’s ‘all about me’ players seem to have no problem beating up their old team after they are released. Neal refuses to slam the Chargers.

And the other thing that has to impress people is the fact that he has cleared the way for a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the last 11 seasons.

I say take a shot and sign the vet. Let him compete in camp and see what happens. If nothing else it would give players like Peyton Hillis the benefit of absorbing some of his knowledge.

His leadership and attitude alone make the signing worth a nod. Throw in the fact that his contributions to LT’s success are well documented and I think we’d have to be foolish not to sign him. Howard Griffith anyone? I think Griff was the least noted cog in the Terrell Davis years.

oh and I’ve been a fan since Fresno State so I guess I should disclose my bias. lol

I think by him being cut it will hurt the Charger rushing game nexy tear. Plus it would help out the Broncos, and anything that will help Denver and screw the Chargers I am all for

    Get him!
He could make another Pro Bowl with the Broncos.

  • Deryl

I’ve watched him for years now with the Chargers . He’s worth the price of admission . I don’t know if he’ll fit your offensive style but he’s way classy . It will be interesting to see the Chargers without him .

  • DesertBoltFan

You’ll be lucky if you get him. He is a class act all around. I have met and had a couple cold ones with him at one of the local watering holes in SD.
He is a terrific FB and will no doubt be in the H of F one day and for a FB to get there that’s saying something.
I just don’t really see him fitting in Shanahan’s system though, you guys have a more West Coast type offense and don’t use the FB much. And if you are behind in a lot of games he won’t be out there at all.
But if you do get him, enjoy him because he is fun to watch.

Oneal??? Its a no brainer! I would love to have him in oakland where raider nation lives! He is simply the best! And plus the chargers whom I dislike so badly we would love for him to pound them in their mouths with love 2 times a year. Bring’em on!!
