Alright gentlemen, the 2008 NFL draft has come and gone, and we have nine new (drafted) Broncos. Last time I checked there were four of us making this blog work – let’s break it all down, starting with each guy’s favorite pick. F.N.G., you’re up!

[Kory Lichtensteiger]

JOSH: Easy answer is Ryan Clady, real answer C Kory Lichtensteiger. I couldn’t be happier with this selection. Taking a versatile interior lineman couldn’t help Denver more with depth. This guy could go in and compete for the right guard spot right away and challenge Hamilton as the replacement for Nalen when he hangs it up. If he does make an excellent guard imagine how tough our line could look this year or next. Clady a beast at LT, Hamilton who I consider one of the most underrated guards in the game at LG, the future Hall of Famer at C, this kid breaking on to the scene at RG and up and comer Pears at RT. We also still have Holland in that mix. The other thing that I haven’t seen mentioned is that this kid is probably a lock for long snapper. If I were Mike Leach I would be on the phone with my agent in a hurry. With taking a position player and eliminating an extra specialist that opens another spot we can use on a project. Win win.

[Eddie Royal]

EARL: I’ve been struggling on this one for awhile. It’s so hard to decide. In a draft where we really wanted to pick up a run stopper, but there really was not any elite DTs available, I felt we did a great job of getting a guy who can hopefully get into the rotation right away. So the Carlton Powell pick is near the top of my list.

On the other hand, while I’m not convinced Josh Barrett is going to make it in the NFL, getting a guy who projected 2nd or 3rd round (depending on list) in the 7th round is amazing value.

But I may have to go with Eddie Royal. I’ve read a lot about him, and boy the opinions are mixed. But we need an electric return man, and he’s the guy. I don’t get why the draft graders are so down on Royal; they think he’s a reach. But he wouldn’t have been there in the fourth round, and the more I read, the more I’m sure that DeSean Jackson wasn’t our guy. And for every draft grader I read who wonders why we passed up Limas Sweed, I answer, “Devin Hester. Dante Hall.”

[Eddie Royal]

JONATHAN: Clady will hopefully have a huge every-down type impact this season, but I’m most excited about Eddie Royal. I have a fondness for Special Teams and have been voicing my desire for us to upgrade our coverage unit for years and our returners all last season. I know Eddie might be small, but so was Darrent Williams and he brought an excitement to our return game that we sorely missed last year. If Eddie can bring that level of intensity to our OTA days and Camp, I’ll be as giddy as a school girl — in a manly way of course.

KYLE: Excellent picks guys. For me, it’s pretty obvious, and if you need to ask, you’re just not paying attention!

Tomorrow’s roundtable: LEAST FAVORITE PICK.

I’d rather see Lichtensteiger on the PS for a year as opposed to using a roster spot on a guy that probably isn’t as good on ST as Leach. Lets face it, unless someone gets hurt, Lich is never going to see the field on offense. Leach is almost always one of the first guys down the field on punts. I’d like to keep him.

Didn’t we just bring in a marginal receiver whose only purpose would be as a return guy (Edell Shephard)? I would have rather see them take Malcolm Kelly w/ that second rounder, if they just HAD to have a receiver.

    Favorite pick is Clady.

Being the top rated Center in the draft I think he’s worth a roster spot and needs to be in the mix to develop quickly. Nails has 1 maybe 2 seasons left.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Both have roster spots. Lich needs to learn, because the future of the Broncos offensive line is coming fast.

We have a lot more OL depth this year than last. Lich will be 3rd string G on both sides and 4th string (yes 4th) C. Isaac Snell, you’re officially on notice.

You guys are right. Lich probably doesn’t need to develop all that quickly, but he would never clear waivers.

They way I understand it, Leach’s lock as long snapper comes from his consistency and quality at that position… it may be premature to predict his demise with the Broncos until we’ve had time to see Lichtensteiger’s production there.
