[Prized Possession]

First off, let me apologize for being absent all of last week. My whole household came down with the flu and spent the week in bed sick – next year, it’s flu shots for everyone!

So I missed posting something last week to continue our conversations about our collective fan experiences. To catch everyone up, we’ve covered your fan-history, your gameday viewing tendencies and what you consider to be your Gameday Good Luck Charm.

This week, I wanted to ask you about your collection. What do you mean, what collection? You know, what I’m talking about! All that Bronco stuff you collect from friends and family every holiday because they know you like Denver?

Do you have a mint condition John Elway rookie card signed by The Duke himself? Do you have a complete set of Game Day programs dating back to the first issue? Have you saved a particular slice of french toast because it had a strange likeness of Terrell Davis on it? Or do you have a whole room devoted to nothing but Orange & Blue?

What is your most prized Bronco possession?

Recently, my prized possession is my Denver Broncos hoodie that I wear on Sunday. I got it at Invesco back in 04 when I watched my first Broncos game live.

But overall, my best possession is a John Elway rookie card. I don’t even know the value of it but I do know it is not a very good looking photo of him.

Danh, yeah, I think I got a 1984 card that someone gave me…

    …not a flattering picture really. :)

    I’ve got that card too.

I’ve got three really nice pieces –

    1) this SI autographed by John:

    2) A second Elway autograph, just a framed picture, but the first auto I had of him

    3) A pair of orange seats from Mile High.

Herc… Mile High seats! That’s pretty awesome! Were those something you bought?

  • hercules rockefeller

Yeah, they were selling them as the stadium was being torn down, but they tried to accomodate season ticket holders that wanted to buy their own seats, so it turned into this giant clusterfuck. Only a handful of people that ordered seats actually got them. I was one of the lucky few. $250 a pair, plus another couple hundred to get them shipped out to SF, where I was living at the time. It was worth it.

I’d have to say that my most meaningful Bronco item came from a fellow fanatic down in Tampa Florida.

Jackie Riles (a k a The Pillow Lady) is a woman on a knitting mission. She is one of the biggest Tampa Bay Bucs fans in the world (she was inducted in to the NFL Fan HoF in Canton in 2002). Jackie creates a personalized throw pillow for everyone involved in the Bucs organization including every player and coach as well as many people in the Tampa community. Jackie is a one of those ‘True Fans.’ She is wheelchair-bound and is on a fixed income, so she collects aluminum cans to pay for her yarn. She doesn’t usually have tickets to home games, but she loyally rides two public buses to cross town and tailgate at every game she can.

I ran into Jackie when I was working with a local filmmaker that had created an independent film about Tampa Bay Bucs fans (some of the most loyal fans in the universe – just ask Andrew Mason).

I had helped to get the film premiered in Tampa, and secured the movie a limited run at a local theatre. Jackie was one of the films subjects and she attended every screening she could (mostly to participate in post-movie Q&A’s).

Through this process, Jackie and I became friends and when she discovered I was a big Denver fan she made a HUGE exception and bought some orange and blue yarn. I have a very special Broncos throw pillow made by the famous Tampa Pillow Lady and that is probably my top possession — not because of its retail value, but because it is a gift from one die-hard fan to another (even though our teams wear different colors).

In my first years of college I was delivering pizzas to pay the bills (now I’m managing those drivers, so yeah, I’ve really moved up in the world, but I digress…)… it was literally two days after the Broncos beat the Pats in the Divisional Round, and I was delivering a pizza to a guy I’ve always delivered to.

This time he was wearing a Broncos hat. We ended up talking for about 20 minutes about all things Broncos, especially how were we bound to win a Super Bowl this year. He showed me his Broncos shrine, worth thousands of dollars. At least 10 Elway jerseys, all covered and protected in clear plastic… autographs… helmets… banners… everything you could think of, this guys had it.

He tipped me by giving me one of the hats.

Over the next year until he moved, he would order every now and then and request I deliver it. We’d shoot the breeze, talk Broncos, and every once in a while he’d give me another cool Broncos keepsake.

Best tip a pizza guy could ever get. :)

Yeah, I bought the seats. $25o, plus another couple hundred to ship them to SF, where I was living at the time. Worth every penny.

The guy that does tours at Invesco said that there were so many screw-ups with the way that process was handled, (mostly due to season ticket holders wanting the seats they had), they eventually shut the whole thing down and less than 5% of the seats that were ordered were shipped. I was one of the lucky ones. I actually got seats 7 and 8 too. I figured that they were just pulling the original numbers off and slapping 7 and 8 on all of them, but I saw another set a few years ago and those were 20 and 21. I got lucky again!

I have a 1989 AFC Champion shirt that I got as a kid. I remember wearing that shirt as a bed time shirt and it was HUGE on me. Now I can barely fit it but enough to not look dumb. I wear it EVERY game day!!
