I just landed in sunny Toronto (that’s in Canada for you Raider fans). I’m here for the Film Festival, but I have to post just a quick note on live fantasy drafts.

On the last leg of my flight I found myself on a plane filled with the usual film festival ilk (ultra-hip filmmakers and way-too-important-to-talk-to-anyone executive producer types). Anyway, across the aisle from me is a guy in a Florida Gators T-shirt reading, I swear, three fantasy football magazines AND checking his laptop for cross-reference. Now, I’m not participating this year but I have enjoyed playing fantasy football as much as the next sports nut; however, this guy looked SERIOUS.

So, it wasn’t long after the drink cart moved through that I tapped his shoulder and struck up a conversation. We chatted about Travis Henry and Cutler for a bit and then he told me why he was flying to Canada…. That’s where their league’s live fantasy draft was being held this year. Say What?!

Yep. All 16 owners of their fantasy league travel from all over the country to a new city every year just to draft up their fantasy teams the day before week 1 of the regular season. That’s pretty darn awesome if you ask me!

They’ve actually been doing this since 1991 and even have their own website devoted to their league (CHECK IT OUT HERE).

I guess that just reminded me of what I really loved about playing in those fantasy leagues over the years. Yeah, the bragging rights for back-to-back league championships wins were nice, but I’m talking about the fellowship of a bunch of guys and girls (if your lucky) that get together and talk about their favorite sport. There’s nothing like getting everyone in the same room and drafting live. There’s so much more drama and emotion. More smack-talk and joking. More sense of community and friendship. IMHO, it’s the best part of FF.

So, if you haven’t tried live drafting, you should — it’s fun!

And good luck to all the TFL owners! (and if your friend from Denver doesn’t beat you to him, grab Travis Henry — he’s gonna have a killer year!)

BT….sense I don’t know how to refer to you I will just use the name of this board….

I was hatched just south of the 48th…I have to say “Hatched” because now that’s SeaChicken country….so I remember where the “Canooks” hang out…Ay! Mum!….

The “smack-talk and joking” is one of the best things about sports….at 57 I have gotten too long in the tooth (as in one like a pirate) to play but still love the action….last year one of your Donko/40-Winer fans came into our board and started calling us the “Faida’s” and smaking us about our record every week…2-6, 2-7, 2-14 no doubt you get the picture….and this year the fool keeps comming in with “0-16 comming to a murder capital near you”….so in the spirit of the game I decided to “Web” around and post some “HateMail” before our game with you next week and stir up a little good old compition….had alot of that back when I lived in Colordo and never got tired of it….

    PantyRaider….PostinHateMail!!!!

    KMA,

I don’t know how much time I’ll have this week outside of the 4-5 films I have to catch each day, but I’m here thru next Wednesday. I’m staying right in downtown so I know there have to be some pretty cool stuff to see and do if I can get away from the screening rooms for a bit.

Last year I hit the Art Museum — very cool.

Yeah, pass along anything you would recommend and I’ll check it out!

    PR,

You can call me Jonathan, and can call Kyle by his name or his screen-name, Kmonty. Or BT is fine too.

And Smack-talk is fine. However, you’ll find that Kyle and I really don’t do a lot of it here on BroncoTalk. We both love the Broncos — which means we throw in a joke or two about the Raiders on occasion, but we’re really not posting just to annoy fans of other teams. We really just both like chatting about the Broncos.

If you’re really looking to pick a good fight (or want to do some major smack-talking) I’d suggest any of the Bronco Forums — those guys will rattle on for hours with you if you want.

Over here you’ll just find a couple of hardcore fans talking about our favorite team.

    Thanks,

    Great Irish Pub:
    Whelan’s Gate
1663 Bloor St. West ( & Dundas St. West), Toronto
    (416) 531-1223

The Owner is Robert Costello, If you mention Kevin Healy from Portland he may set you up.(it’s been a while he may throw a beer bottle at you)
Keele stop on the subway walk down to Bloor st.

If you have time for a stroll with nice weather take the ferry over to the island parks. Great views, and nice walks, and of course best view in town will have you looking over Lake Ontario at Buffalo: The CN tower
By the way if you are there in TO, are you going to the game? You know Buffalo is only 45 minute drive from there right?
    anyway that’s it, have fun!

Ouch! You HAD to point out how close I’ll be to the game, didn’t you! :)

Yeah, I’m totally bummed, but I will likely miss our season opener… I know, I know, and I call myself a fan. :(

I’ll probably have screenings all day on Sunday, so there’s not much chance I’ll even see it on the Hotel TV (if they play it). I’ve been holding out hope that I might sneak off and catch it (or part of it) when no one is watching, but I doubt it.

Maybe someone will catch it on tape and send me a copy? (hint, hint, anyone?)

I’ll definitely check out Whelan’s this week! But if I get a beer bottle in the head, you’re gonna owe me. :)

    Thanks for the tips!

No worries on the game, you can get Buffalo TV stations in TO, as long as you have time in your schedule, (they are actually pretty big Bills fans in TO)
As for the beer bottle, no prob, I’ll make it up to you, hopefully he’ll be in good spirits, He is Irish after all :)
He’s a good guy, took good care of me while I was there in 95
