Relax! I’m not talking about the Bronco’s — I’m talking about Cherry Creek High School, whose starting QB is Jack Elway (John Elway’s 17 year-old son).

If you live anywhere near the Mile High City, you will be well aware of the media attention this High School (and its football team) is getting this season. There have been countless articles in the Denver Post and several local TV news stories on the ‘Young Elway.’ This last one, details the Cherry Creek coach’s decision to add Daddy Elway to the staff as Jack’s QB coach.

“As a coach, you’re trying to not to have fathers on your staff — but this is a little different deal.” – Head Coach Greg Critchett, Cherry Creek HS

It’s a little different deal? — No kidding! This High School has not only college scouts but NFL scouts coming to its games!

But is Jack Elway truly worthy of all this hype or is this the product of Denver fans wishing to see #7 reincarnated? Truthfully, that question won’t be determined for years to come. So, why get all of Bronco Nation worked up about a High School senior?

Well, for one thing this High School senior is physically right to play QB. He’s 6’ 3” and 185lbs (John Elway was only 5’ 10” and 165lbs at that age). He also has impressive arm strength for his age, easily throwing the ball 65 yards. And in his first game of the 2007 season he did pretty well. He was 8-of-13 for 114 yards and 1 TD, while rushing for 39 yards and other TD.

Admittedly, he looked a lot like dad in that game. He lead a touchdown drive 99 yards in 13 plays, scrambled several times to keep plays alive, had at least one rushing TD and, heck, even drew the defense offsides with a hard count on third-and-1. Not bad for his first outing as a senior!

And now, his dad is officially coaching him at QB.

I’m not sure this really does much more than allow Daddy Elway to be on the sidelines during practices and games… come on, like he wasn’t coaching Jack at home? But, it definitely can’t hurt his chances to get picked up by a good college program. If he can find a good college program that will work with him on building his skills, he may develop into a quality player that has a shot at playing in the NFL.

And in the wonderful world of fantasy, Bronco fans can certainly dream that one day Mike Shanahan (who of course will still be coaching the Broncos) drafts Jack Elway after he completes his record-breaking college career (surely he’ll win at least one Bowl game). And, why not continue to imagine John Elway allowing his son to un-retire his jersey, too?

…ok, that part might be selfish… I just don’t want to buy another #7 Elway jersey.

Maybe we can hope Brian Griese will have a son that the 97 year old coach of the Broncos, Mike Shanahan will be able to draft from the yet to be built Denver State University, then all of the people who bought Griese jerseys will don them once again.
Ok i guess the Denver State University reference was a bit far fetched, sorry
Did anyone ever buy a Broncos Greise jersey?
    Sorry random thoughts there
great stuff as always JD! (I’m thinking the merger is paying off)

Ive already prepared myself for the onsluaght of young Elway media attention for this year. He’s already been on the cover of Mile High Sports Mag. Channel 4 has probably already assigned a beat reporter ala Gary Miller to Cherry Creek, maybe they brought Les Shapiro back for it.

KMA: OMG that was the funniest thing I’ve heard all day!!! :)

As a matter of fact I don’t have a jersey, but a friend of mine took a pennant for Griese to autograph for me. While I appreciated the gesture, what I thought was cooler than Brian’s signature, was that my friend accidentally caught Bob Griese with his son and he signed it as well. It’s the only Bronco item I have that’s Griese-related, but I’ve kept it through all of my moves because I thought the father and son autographs were cool.

…and, yeah, I’m really enjoying it at BroncoTalk! :)

The nice thing about being rich and famous is that your kids start off with a leg up in life. I suspect young Elway deserves some media attention for his hard work, but I know that there are hundreds if not thousands of other Colorado kids who deserve praise for their accomplishments. The media has the potential to lift up some of the other students who spend the hours in the weight room, on the track, in school to make the grades, and at jobs to help their parents make ends meet. This is not to knock father Elway, most parents would love to be able to rearrange our schedules to show up at school around 3:00 every afternoon to help our kids and return to a game we love. It is to encourage the media to spread the wealth.

No to Griese. His Dad went to Purdue, but he sold his son out to michigan. Bad.

This is great news bout Elway and his son. I can see it now, Elway II wins our 6th and 7th SuperBowl Trophies (that’s right, we will win 4 before he gets there!!!).

    howdy, BoilerBronco!

Can I assume by your username and reply that you’re from Purdue? I’ve done some time in West Lafayette myself, although I wasn’t the one attending school. I spent most of those years working at the Stadium McD’s on campus — that was back in the early 90’s. I bet quite a bit has changed since then.
