Nobody knows who the Broncos starting running back will be in 2013, but it’s obvious that the team will be adding at least one player to the backfield this offseason.  The New York JetsShonn Greene was thrown into the conversation by ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini on Sunday:

There has been some buzz here on the future of RB Shonn Greene, an unrestricted free agent.  Spies say Greene, coming off an underwhelming 1,000-yard season, is expected to draw interest from the Falcons and Broncos

The Broncos don’t have a clear-cut No. 1 back.  The Jets, looking for a speed back to pair with Bilal Powell, are prepared to part ways with Greene.

The Broncos have already also been linked to St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson, but it sounds like Jackson wants to return to St. Louis. Jackson, 29, is two years older and fourteen pounds heavier than Greene (who weighs in at 226 pounds).

Should the Broncos go after Greene?  Speak up in the comments below.

Get Greene in free agency, let him split carries with Willis and Hillman. Then draft Lattimore in the 3rd or 4th and let him fully heal so we have a good 3 down running back next year.

  • 350legend

To be honest, my ideal back for us to snatch would be Steven Jackson, although u guys did say hes looking to go back, that hasnt happen yet, so for now fingers are still crossed. So as for Greene, im not sure if im sold on him, he did rush for 1000 yard last season but still hasnt seen much of him for him to Wow me, But, i trust the broncos staff in there choice so we should see

I’d rather keep Moreno and dump McGahee. Willis is getting old and fumbles. Knowshon is still young and played well last season.

  • 12508

I’m a Broncos fan from ny. Watch too many jets games. This would be a horrible move! Green is the worst RB in the league. Slow, soft, bad hands, and can’t pick up a blitz. I would rather get nothing in free agency. Not saying this guy is a bad apple but he is a team killer. #1 reason Sanchez stunk this year is green. Gave them nothing from the RB position. Tebow is a better RB the shon. I can’t tell you enough bad things about this move. I pray this doesn’t happen. If shon is on this team and plays we are in big trouble!!! Trust me when I tell you . This guy is going to hurt us. Let us pray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’

  • TheTroglodyte

    Agreed

  • 12508

Willis is solid. Yes he is old. Says alot about Moreno. RB spots was his when he was drafted. Moreno let a few guys move ahead of him. I was really hard on Moreno for years. He did play well at the end of last year. I have to see more. I still don’t trust him for a full season. Not ready to just hand him the spot. Willis is a tough dude. If healthy he is the man. Maybe Hillman can add some weight and play a little more next year.

  • 12508

Im also high on a few of these rookies. Love Bernard and Lacy. If they are still around in the first round I would be all over it. Bernard is a good player. Plays faster than the 4.5 he ran at the combine. Great on special teams. YouTube some of his work.

  • Pete Baron

Draft Montee Ball in the 2nd or 3rd, and it doesn’t really matter who else we have on our roster as a RB, cause he’s the next Terrell Davis!!!

  • Cheyenne Kid

Unfortunately,we will just have to wait and see who is available in free agency and then the draft. Ideally Jackson will void his contract and be available and I think Montee Ball would be a great choice for the Broncos if they can get him. But that might not happen so all else is conjecture and wishing right now!

  • Cheyenne Kid

But the draft is deep enough that great players comparible to 1-5 picks will be available in first and second rounds and maybe into the third!

  • Pete Baron

Problem is that only half of what you said is true…. Yes, you can get equivalent talent in the 2nd round that you would in the top 10, but where you are wrong is that this draft seems to lack “great” players. I mean, I love me offensive linemen and defensive linemen, but none of them stand out. Sure, there are some freaky fast WRs, but they don’t have the best hands. The RBs are all slow (even though I’d give my left nut to get Montee Ball), and all the QBs are equivalent or worse than our backup. Just an all around weak draft. There are solid guys, but not many who can be considered “great”.

  • Cody

Greene would make a good addition to this team to win the Super Bowl next year.

  • Cheyenne Kid

Pete, that was said by Mike Mayhew at the Combine todayRaw potential to be great is what he was talking about of course!

  • Pete Baron

No kidding? NFL network needs to hire me. Haha.

  • Doom92

As late as our first pick is I’d take him there. When you pick that late its not much different than picking early in the first round. I think Ball is a top 10 talent so if he was there at 28 I’d say go for it and I’d be happy. There will be no other top 10 talent at 28, period. And all of what I just said is true…lol.

  • Doom92

Did you mean Mike Mayock??? Never heard of Mayhew…

  • Doom92

I dont think all the running backs are slow… Unless of course you meant what we have on our roster now??? ;-)

  • Doom92

    Lord have mercy…lmao!

  • Doom92

I’d like SJ a bunch as well… Wanting to go back to SL right now for him I think is just plain dumb. He has a chance to find greatness else where, to pass is a life time choice for him, I think.

  • Doom92

Half way Agree, Knowshow had a fire lit under his ass and that is why he stepped up. I’m not so sure he can just “do that” on his own. I say its worth one last try if he’ll take a pay cut but be ready to ax him early if he cant light that fire himself.

Plus if Knowshow had not went down in the Play-off game it would have been much much different. Mr Get-Hurt/Injury Bug got hurt when it mattered most…

  • Doom92

Your right, 4.5 isn’t that great but its freekin’ fast… I’ve been around plenty of 4.5 athletes that could flat out play there asses off. Its only .3 slower than 4.2, that is NOT that much on the field of play!!!

  • Doom92

Thank you Willis for a few good years… Its time to move on… Just the way it is.

  • Cheyenne Kid

    Yes,;my bad!

  • triguyww

After watching Ball’s YouTube highlights from his 2012 seasons, I’m very impressed. He COULD become the next TD for Denver, but nabbing him is another matter. C’mon Elway, let’s see you wheel and deal for this standout with legs and some real moves. Guess we’ll have to see how the draft cards fall.

  • areferee

Yes, definitely go after Shonn Greene. Then trade Peyton Manning for Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow and then see if we can get Plaxico Burress, Brett Favre and any other crashed Jet that has fallen off the NFL runway.

  • broncosnative

Willis was good the first year but I saw some declining in his play last season with the fumbles. Its time to let him walk and go younger, hillman could be the guy but I haven’t seen enough from him to make a clear thought. Ball would ne a nice addition if they can get him, I would get greene for insurance reasons.

  • Pete Baron

You sir, are right on the money. I’d take him at 28 as well. I know that some have him in the 2nd and most in the 3rd, but man, I wouldn’t risk it because of where we’ll be picking in each round. Because we’re so late, we’d kinda have to take him in the 1st round, because surely at least 1 team who has a second round grade on him will be picking ahead of us in the second, and thus, snatching him before we can get him.

To me, Ball is as much of a sure thing for this year’s RBs as Luck was last year for QBs. The dude is a monster. He’s fast enough. He’s super tough, he’s a TD machine, and he’s an exceptional pass blocker. Sounds like the type of back we are dying to get on our team!

  • Pete Baron

I think 4.5 and 4.6 is plenty fast, but with the burners at the WR position, and them always wanting to put Chris Johnson’s 4.2something as the RB benchmark, a 4.5 or 4.6 is starting to be considered “slow”. lol

  • Pete Baron

    lol

  • broncosnative

I agree, why would he want to stay on a team that gives him no chance to contend for a ring. He’ll be 30 this year and RBs usually decline around this age. What happened to guys who play to win championships

  • Doom92

We agree completly… If he is there and they pass I would be disappointed. I’m sure there are a number of teams that have him ranked in the second, some maybe even earlier. He is a player and I’d be surprised if he were there at 28.

  • Doom92

I’d say more to the norm than slow. There was a 4.3 and a 4.27 neither of which is slow. Nore is the number in the 4.4 range. The 40 and field of play speed are different any way. I saw a few of those guys that I think will pan out, but Ball is for sure the real deal. While I do not see him so much as the next A. Peterson I do see him as third years Richardson, who is the real deal also.

  • Doom92

I dont know why you have it so bad to rip the Jets off like this… ;-)

  • TheTroglodyte

    LMAO

  • Pete Baron

He did have one of the slower 40 yard times a couple days ago… in the 4.6 range, so I’m hoping that teams wait until the 2nd or 3rd to take him.

Remember though, TD was never “fast”, but damn was he the best RB in the league for a 3 year stretch (and yes, that’s when Emmit Smith and Barry Sanders were in their primes). Guess what? The only reason why Al Wilson (the REAL “Big AL”) made it to us was because he wasn’t as fast or big as others…

There was something that they shared though, and I remember at the time, Dr. Z said it about Big Al…. it’s that “forget the numbers, the guy can just flat out play!”…. well, Ball can flat out play! I’d do cartwheels if we drafted him in the 1st. He’s gonna be a star for years to come… and, he can block really well which is something Manning will need next year!

  • Pete Baron

You’re right. I shouldn’t say that his 4.62 is slow (Terrell Davis ran a 4.7, and when he played, he ran away from people in open space).

I think too much is made of 40 yard dash speed anyways. These guys are in their spandex bicycle shorts and shirts in a controlled environment. If I were a GM and I wanted to put any stock whatsoever in a player’s 40 time, I’d go to their campus workouts and clock them in full pads while carrying a football.

Also, like you said, Ball won’t be AP, but that isn’t a knock on him. They are just different types of players. It’s like saying that Wes Welker is no Calvin Johnson. They are both the best at their position while maintaining their completely opposite styles of play/physical presence.

  • Doom92

The Welker Johnson reference is perfect, you totally got my point. A RB, much to manys disagreement, does not have to AP to kick ass. With that said I think that Ball resides some where between Martin and Richardson as far as style. He has the quickness and the run you the %*ck over…

  • Doom92

    Its cool ;-)…

  • Paradisimo

While Moreno definitely ran harder after the fire was lit under his ass I still look at his numbers and am unimpressed. A 3.8 YPC average is just so pedestrian. Add to that the fact that he got hurt when we needed him most and I think it is time to move on.

  • Doom92

Dont have to sell this kid on that one…

  • Jim_Jebow

But he also runs for John “everybody knows I’m going to run it on first down” Fox. So 3.8 ypc ain’t bad when you are up against 8 in the box.

  • 12508

Anyone but Green. Think about it. Jets need plenty of help. Why would they let this guy walk? Jets have Powell and thats it. Jets just want to run the ball. Green could not get it done. Elway must be blowing smoke. If the Falcons cut Turner I would rather sign him.

  • cdubarkansasrep

I want Tavon AUSTIN!!!!!!!!! I have been hounding you guys about him before the cobine. Now look what he did he had some of the best looking hands in the combine. I also believe that the Lattimore kid will be the steal of the draft. As the name may hint to being from the great natural state of Arkansas I have seen him trammple many of Hogs through the years s. I’ve been keeping up with him a little and the kid is motivated to be the best trust and believe.

  • gmac5

Steven Jackson is voiding deal. I would rather have him than Greene
