Mike McCoy

The Denver Post reports that the San Diego Chargers have indeed hired Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy as head coach, confirming rumors we reported earlier today.

The hiring marks the second Broncos coordinator to be hired as head coach within the AFC West in the past 12 months. Last year, the Oakland Raiders swiped then-Broncos defensive coordinator to be head coach.

McCoy, a “heck of a coach,” earned the interest by successfully adapting his offense to quarterbacks Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning in consecutive seasons. It’s that ability to adapt his scheme to his players — and not the other way around — that we believe will serve him well in the NFL moving forward. Congratulations to McCoy, and also, now we hate you.

Makes no matter, Norv is more talented and couldn’t win the important games. The only negative is he knows our weaknesses on defense so it will be more of a chess match. Good riddance.

  • TheTroglodyte

I just went from well wishes to wishing him a decade of just good enough not to get fired but not good enough to win anything.

What’s up with our assistant coaches all staying in the division?

I was never big on the guy anyway, hopefully I was right.

  • TheTroglodyte

Here’s to hoping we promote Gase to OC and bring in Tom Moore as an adviser Pete talked me into Moore needing to be around.

  • Alphabeatsoups

Good this for us. We need some one with some balls!! This dude had baby nuts!

  • Pete Baron

You know what cracks me up? The Chargers and Raiders got our coordinators that we all wanted out of here anyways. While we all liked Allen, he certainly wasn’t a “must keep” coach.

This is just another example of the Raiders and Chargers picking through our trash to find the shiniest turd… Guess what? It’s still a turd! If we all wanted McCoy out of here, why in the world would San Diego say “YES, THAT IS OUR GUY!!!” same with Dennis Allen and the Raiders. I mean, we all collectively said “Take ANYONE but Jack Del Rio”… that right there should speak louder than anything to other teams that the coach they want is the one we all think is the most indispensable.

But oh well, the Chargers get our lame brain, ball-less, unimaginative offensive coordinator that most of us wanted out anyways. Congratulations San Diego, you got about as good of a head coach as Ron Burgundy. haha

  • Pete Baron

Gase as OC with Moore as consultant works fine for me! I think he wants to be a consultant anyways so he can keep his old pension plan. Isn’t that why he retired in the first place?

  • Jim_Jebow

    Stay classy San Diego

  • FOT

Well I defiantly don’t wanna hear how sucessful the Raiders and Chargers get, because they stole DENVER’s coaches!!!!

  • Pete Baron

Go F yourself San Diego. haha

/puts on tinfoil hat… Can I throw out a tin foil hat conspiracy that I just concocted in my brain?
What do we know about the game and the game losing conservativism?

    a) There were rumors that McCoy might have cost himself head coaching positions because of the play calling.

b)Manning stood up for his coaches and blamed himself for the 3rd & 7 call that led to the punt that led to the tying score.

    c) Fox stood up for his coaches and players by saying that it was his call from the beginning, and that the play Manning thought the reporter was talking about was a different 3rd & 5 play.

    d) Elway stood up for everyone and said everything was fine.

    e) McCoy just got hired (presumably) by the Chargers after the dust settled.

Ok, so my tin foil hat moment just came to me. Who has been silent and taken zero blame for the conservative play calling? Mike McCoy! Who is the person that for 2 years now, we fans have never thought could coach his way out of a wet paper bag? Mike McCoy! Why would Manning, Fox, and Elway shield McCoy from any criticism? Because they wanted him out of here so they could get a creative coach to coach Peyton Manning and this offense. Tom Moore or Adam Gase don’t get promoted/brought in if McCoy is still around with his lame-ass plays and unimaginative playcalling. Maybe Elway, Fox, and Manning all jumped on the grenade in order for McCoy to save face and destroy some other team with talent; In this case, San Diego. I mean, why else is everyone but the person who *should* be responsible for the offense taking the blame for the offense? hmmm….. /tinfoil hat now removed.

  • Pete Baron

I believe McCoy is going to coach in a “Whale’s Vagina”… hahaha. Man, we can do this all day thanks to that movie! haha

  • TheTroglodyte

    Yes, I forgot about that.

  • TheTroglodyte

    LOL! I like it

  • Pete Baron

Right? I mean, Manning has nothing to lose cause he knows he’ll still be here. Fox has nothing to lose cause he knows he’ll still be here; Same for Elway. Who has something to lose? The same person who has a shot at leaving this team. If they want him to stay, any if those 3 can put any onus on the offensive coordinator. The mere fact that he was never even mentioned meant that he was being shielded. Why shield him? Cause you want him gone to another team. Lol. This foil hat is kinda comfy. Haha

  • TD30isMVP

The Germans discovered it in 1904, and they called it “San Diego”, which in German means “whale’s vagina”.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

With all due respect, if the Broncos wanted him out, they’d just fire him.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Broncos rumored to be interested in Ken Whisenhunt to fill in OC position.

That would make our main 3 coaches John Fox, Jack Del Rio, and Ken Whisenhunt. Holy retreads, Batman.

  • Pete Baron

Nah, firing him is too costly (guaranteed contract) and a hard sell to a team with a 13-3 record.

  • TheTroglodyte

    Ugh! Not excited about that.

  • Jim_Jebow

I’m gonna punch you in the ovary, that’s what I’m gonna do. A straight shot. Right to the babymaker.

  • http://twitter.com/jheath_DEN Jon

Can’t do that because Moore is already an adviser (“offensive consultant”) for the Titans. To hire him away, it’d have to be a promotion. Offensive coordinator would work, but I doubt anything else would be allowed.

  • Bryan

I believe McCoy was on SD’s radar for the same reason we kept him around. He adapted the offense to the talents of the players he had, which is completely opposite of what Norv Turner was. Delhomme, Tebow, Orton. Norv was a ‘run the offense my way, even if it doesn’t work’. McCoy atleast tries to game plan with what he has. It really amazed me that he didn’t go elsewhere after last season because of what he did with Tebow and the rest of the offenseive over the course of a bye week. Once PM came in, it was a no brainer that McCoy’s stock would rise.

That’s about the only thing worth while I saw out of McCoy, then again, I have never been a fan of his anyways. I do think his play calling is pretty conservative, which is likely why Fox liked him so much, but he’s going to SD as the HC. Whoever they get at OC is likely to be calling the plays.

Dennis Allen was a target because the defensive unit played out of the minds and kept us in alot of games. He was a hot name just like McD was when we went all in on him. The verdict is still out on the Raiders and Allen, but I just don’t see them improving at all under him and I think it’s safe to say, Oakland has regressed even more with Allen.

Edit: And don’t say that most of this board wanted Dennis Allen out of her. If I remember correctly, no one really even bought into JDR until the defensive was noticeably better this season and was actually pissed because Allen left.

  • Bryan

Why’s that? Because of what he did in Arizona with a couple of bum QB’s? It certainly can’t be because he took Arizona to the SB, and was within minutes of winning the thing with a team that really didn’t have any business being there. He was also a great OC in his time in Pittsburgh.

I think Whiz is an upgrade over McCoy. His more aggressive play calling, and his game planning skills are really nice.

  • Bryan

It’s the same tactic Bellicheck uses. Send out your minions to incapacitate other franchises…in this case, it’s our divison rivals. Look at the success some of those guys had in destroying teams…Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weiss, McD, Mangini.

  • Bryan

How did they steal our coaches? Did you see what the Raiders did with Allen? Yeah, they’ll be tough…not. What exactly did McCoy or Dennis Allen win us? A big old heap of nothing.

  • Bryan

I have never been a fan of McCoy to begin with and thought he should have been replaced when McDaniels was fired. What I really like about this move is that it helps alleviate some of the sting from this weekends loss. We’re starting our offseason effective immediately rather than letting the loss soak longer and longer.

  • TheTroglodyte

You’re overlooking some really obvious facts and picking out what you like. Not worth getting into it though over a prospective pick. Let’s just leave it at I’m not excited about it.

  • Bryan

I wouldn’t mind hearing those obvious facts on Whisenhunt Caveman…but fair enough. If it was for a HC position, I would be concerned but as the OC, I’m cool with Ken.

  • TheTroglodyte

Yes but that’s not as much fun as choosing to believe John “The Evil Genius” Elway just sabotaged San Diego like the puppet master he is.

Make them dance John. Make them dance!

  • TheTroglodyte

Well the year they went to the SB they won a total of 9 regular season games in arguably the worst division in the history of the NFL.That should have been 6 giveme games. Some NFL Pundits were so outraged the Cardinals even made the playoffs over some other teams simply because they were atop the weakest division. Many people were bringing up rule changes to keep this catastrophe from happening again.

The Cardinals with stifling defense that had little or maybe even nothing to do with Wisenhunt and a HOF QB and at least 1 HOF WR (arguably two) simply got hot at the right time and strung together some wins.

The very next year with the same core intact they manage only 10 wins in still the weakest division in football and get blown out by NO in the playoffs which had an average at best defense.

Ken has shown horrible judgement in his coaching career when it comes to QB’s and that no doubt means his judgement must always be questioned on all matters.

The Steelers offense was never great under him. It was average at best and built on a super strong running game with Jerome Bettis. 20 points and they were likely to win.

I’m not saying he is a horrible choice or I am going to want to kick a puppy if they bring him on board. He just doesn’t excite me. I think he would be a ho hum oc for us.

  • TheTroglodyte

Didn’t Kyle Shanahan leave the Texans as OC to be the Redskins OC?

  • TheTroglodyte

All that being said, Ken is more aggressive and his NFL tenure would condone a little more respect from Fox which he will need to run his gameplan so, I dunno. Still not excited about it but he’d probably be ok.

McCoy was a class act and did a good job. I’m not going to judge him on one game. Looking back on this season I’m happy overall. Last week hurt!!!! Looking forward I think we have plenty of positives. 1. We don’t need much on offense. Payton came in and got everyone to step it up. A stud at TE would be nice but I like what we have. 2. Moreno played well. If Willis can play next year we can roll with that. 3. I love the special teams moving forward. 4. Defense played better this year. We could use a few players. A monster DE would be nice. I would make that our #1 need. Safety would also be a need. Not sure if Landry is a free agent but I would like him. I like what I see and we got a shot. All you need in the NFL.

  • jlivings

Is it bad that I’m 100% unconcerned about this?

I mean do we really think the offense will be worse next year without him? And that he can successfully run a franchise as HC? Don’t think so.

Much happier we are keeping Del Rio.

  • areferee

    LOL.

That’s why you’re still the MVP, TD.

Actually, San Diego means: “City of Wonderful weather, hot girls, great beaches and a sucky-a** sports atmosphere where everybody is outside chasing skirts, catching some rays and thinking about a team in L.A.”.

  • areferee

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it still smells like a BLT. – Norval Turner

  • TheTroglodyte

    lol

  • http://twitter.com/jheath_DEN Jon

Maybe it is possible because I saw a teams WR coach leave to go coach another team’s WR, so I’m actually not sure on the ruling. Always thought it had to be a promotion though, I guess not.
