This offseason, we’re doing a Speak Up series looking at each position (o-line, d-line, etc).  Today, we’re looking at the quarterbacks.

Last season, Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow were Denver’s Co-No. 2 QBs for the first half of the season. Who should be the No. 2 QB this season?

Returning:  Adam Weber.

Acquired:  Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler and Caleb Hanie.

Manning will presumably be the starter this season, which leaves Weber, Osweiler and Hanie to compete for the remaining two spots.  Which one should be the No. 2 QB?

During minicamp, Weber, Osweiler and Hanie all took turns with the second team during practice.  Per reports, Osweiler had the cleanest overall performance with Weber close behind.  That would leave Hanie as the odd man out.

With Weber still practice squad eligible, the Broncos may go Manning 1, Hanie 2, Osweiler 3 and place Weber on the practice squad unit.  Or, Weber may beat out Hanie — anything could happen.

Who do you think should be the second quarterback?  The team says Osweiler is the future, Weber has the most experience in Denver while Hanie has the most starter experience.

Dish out your thoughts in the comments and be sure to vote in the poll below!

Who should backup Peyton Manning this season?

Hopefully this is the discussion for the next few years, up to the neck injury Manning was a rock solid week in week out starter.

  • TheTroglodyte

Adam Weber all the way! Osweiler has A LONG way to go still. Maybe next year he can be #2 but he isn’t ready. Hanie should be dropped just because Weber is so amazingly awesome and I’m never letting my caveman crush on him go away haha.

  • TheTroglodyte

Sure, Manning had his moments. But if you think throwing for 3 TD’s a week while racking up 12+ wins a season for over a decade means “rock solid” we are just going to have to agree to disagree right there bub! :p

  • TD30isMVP

Ha, I meant health wise Trog!

One has to wonder if Webber actually has a shot. If you lure a FA in only to cut him later, don’t you run the risk of losing out on future FAs?

I couldn’t help myself, I voted for Jake.

  • TD30isMVP

Dude, I am with you I hope he lights it up this year (pre season only) and can be the 2nd QB.

  • TD30isMVP

and by lights it up I mean does awesome…not lights it up like Detroit Lion’s players….

  • TheTroglodyte

    ROTFL!

  • TD30isMVP

    Woo Hoo…finally got Prater signed.

  • TD30isMVP

I think it shows the FA’s that there is true competition here, and honestly any FA that it scares off did we really want them here in the first place?

Weber has been getting the snaps, but he is also the longest tenured quarterback in Denver. If I were betting, I’d bet on Hanie as second string, Osweiler as third and Weber becomes a New England Patriot.

Then again, with the NFL allowing three quarterbacks to suit on game day, they may just do what they did last season and not name a backup.

    Caveman crush huh?

  • TheTroglodyte

Well, just by default. Since I am a caveman, it has to be a caveman crush haha. Been a fan of his and Decker since college.

“If I were betting, I’d bet on Hanie as second string, Osweiler as third and Weber becomes a New England Patriot.”

Why must you say such mean spirited things??? :p

Are you in the Minnesota area?

  • TheTroglodyte

No, from California/Colorado… currently living in Utah. Just caught a random game of theirs one day and had a lot of fun watching them.

  • http://Twitter.com/Jon_BT Jon

That happens to me all the time!

  • herc_rock

Osweiler. If Peyton goes down (knock wood) we’re screwed. Might as well get the kid as ready as he can be just in case.

  • http://Twitter.com/Jon_BT Jon

I just knocked on wood. You’re jinxed now. OK, herc, I unjinxed you. You’re welcome.

  • Doom92

I guess I’m a dumb ass Trog cuz I don’t get it… I think Peyton is for sure “Rock Solid”. Any team in the league (maybe not the Pats, they have it now) would take what you just laid out in any guy that they felt would guarantee those stats…

  • Doom92

Can I get an Amen brothers… I don’t know about #2 and don’t really care if he is number 2 but I hope he beats out Hanie. Besides the fact that I like him Hanie is a suck fest. Yep I’d say I like Hanie about as much as I like Knowshow, hope he is gone and Weber is in.

  • Doom92

LMAO… That would not surprise me one bit. Then goes on to succeed Brady and blow his records out of the water… Or have to fill in for the rest of this year, do well and get traded to the Chefs… ;-)

  • anthony33

Have not seen enough of Weber or Osweiler, so who ever has the best camp and preseason should get the nod. I have seen Hanie and want no part of that,

  • MrEast

No. You don’t draft a dude so high and have an undrafted guy beat him out.

  • TheTroglodyte

Doom, that was a tongue in cheek comment.

  • TheTroglodyte

You do if he outplays him. Osweiler was drafted as a 3 – 4 year project. He is in no way shape or form ready to play in the NFL at this point. Weber may not be either but if Os really is the 2nd best QB on the team, we have a problem.

  • Doom92

I figured as much but wasnt quite sure.

  • Doom92

I agree… I get bored hearing this “Ooooo he is a high pick so he has to play.” Bull Shit! He Os is exactly that a 3-4 year project and I’m hoping that he does it and we don’t even look at drafting a QB for years to come.
BUT… Weber may be undrafted but I’m betting he is WAY better now than he was when he went undrafted. In-fact I’d almost bet that if he were as good then as he is now he wouldn’t have gone undrafted. No prolly not a 1st, 2nd or 3rd, but maybe a 4th or beyond. And while not common there even 6th rounders that wait it out and end up being great.

  • MrEast

No. What I mean is, you don’t draft a guy in the second round who can get beat by an undrafted guy.
