UPDATE: The deal hit a snag, but after a wild eight hours, has been finalized. Tim Tebow is indeed a New York Jet.
Tim Tebow is no longer a Denver Bronco.
The Denver Broncos have traded third-year quarterback Tim Tebow to the New York Jets following the Broncos’ signing of Peyton Manning this week. The Jets traded fourth and sixth round draft picks to the Broncos in exchange for Tebow and a seventh round draft pick.
In 2010, former Head Coach Josh McDaniels traded a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pick to the Baltimore Ravens to move up and draft Tebow, today the team got 4th and 6th round picks in exchange for the polarizing quarterback. The Jets, who recently extended quarterback Mark Sanchez‘s contract, better know what they are in for by acquiring not only Tebow, but Tebowmania, also.
Tebowmania drove Kyle Orton out of town and in part, caused the Broncos to move on from Tebow. It’s not yet known what plans the Jets have for Tebow, but anything less than the starting job may not be well-received by JetGators (formerly known as BroncoGators — “Bronco fans” who were really Tebow fans).
Before anybody says they got ripped off for only getting a fourth (and late) round picks, don’t. I wrote about a week ago that the team probably wouldn’t trade Tebow because teams wouldn’t be willing to give up more than a fourth round pick, but the Broncos had other plans. Denver could not have gotten more for Tebow because teams overvalue draft selections.
We at BT wish Tebow nothing but the best with his new team. Thanks for the memories, Tim!
