The Denver Broncos have been granted permission by the Dallas Cowboys to interview offensive coordinator Jason Garrett for the Broncos’ Head Coach opening, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports. The interview will take place some time next week.

Garrett was a hot name in the coaching circle after 2007, when his offense led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record and first seed in the NFC playoffs. After the Cowboys gave Garrett a ridiculous contract to keep him in Dallas as coordinator, Dallas struggled somewhat on offense this season, finishing out of the playoffs, and ultimately causing Garrett’s coaching stock to fall.

The Broncos will also hold interviews with Steve Spagnuolo Saturday (DC, Giants), Josh McDaniels Sunday (OC, Patroits), and Raheem Morris (DC, Buccaneers) on Wednesday. In addition to these three interviews, the team has contacted Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops about the position.  Expect an interview with Stoops after the BCS Championship game next week.

Garrett’s name has fallen off a lot of people’s radar this offseason. I’d be surprised if he wins the job. Meanwhile, Wade Phillips has to be saying “What about me?” by now. Last season, there were rumors Garrett would be promoted to Head Coach in Dallas and Wade would be out. Now there’s talk of Mike Shanahan taking Phillips’ place, should he be fired. Of course, Shanahan originally replaced Phillips as Denver Broncos Head Coach following the 1995 season.

Nothing against him personally but i really dont want him. If we got rid of Shanahan we had better go at fixing the defense full force. I dont want an offensive coach.

I do not want an offensive coach at all. If we were though it should be Josh McDaniels. He isn’t even that good!!!! I’m for Spags.

I really wish Bowlen would have given more consideration to bringing Pioli as GM as our first move then figuring out the coach.

  • Andy

Garrett is right. We need a defensive minded coach and hopefully Bates will stay on the staff as well. Spags is my choice at the moment. I am coming to grips with Shanny not being coach, I just hope we don’t screw it up or it could be a very ugly season.

no no no no.. and please no

    Ryan:
I agree. Bring in a GM (preferably Pioli) and consult with him on our next HC. We should really have Pioli on speed dial by now and get him to Denver.

  • HooptyHoops

    Just say NO to Garrett….

Jeeez I hope Garret is not the choice! We need a defensive minded coach who can rise to the occasion. Our Offensive coordinator will continue to build around Cutler but we need someone who understands the meaning of Putting the “D” back in Denver. I like Spag or the man formally of the steelers. Please Mr B do not travel down the same path. Please give the fans a defense they can stand behind. Oh, if the Tuna becomes available before you hire a coach… for cryin-out-loud hire him as GM!! Respectfully, your sunday arm chair football expert…GO BRONCOS!!!!

Bowlen’s said he’s happy with the front office. ie Goodmans, etc. And when did a head coach’s side of the ball matter, when it comes to O/D? Was Mangini’s team better offensively or defensively? Smith? Harbaugh? Sporano? Kubiak?
    It’s just not that easy.
