Update:  Mendenhall signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Since the beginning of free agency, the Broncos have shown interest in former Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall.

What started as interest led to a visit which will likely lead to a contract, as a source tells PFT that the team is likely to sign the former first round pick. Mendenhall will also meet with the Cardinals, but Denver appears to be his most likely destination.

Mendenhall (5′-10″, 225 lbs.) is 25 with five years of service under his belt.  Since 2008, he has rushed 864 times for 3,549 yards and 29 touchdowns while posting a pair of 1,000-yard seasons (’09, ’10) along the way.

The Broncos are also close to agreeing to terms with free agent defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, who played for Jack Del Rio in Jacksonville.

Wha is it with letter “m”‘s for Denver’s backs? Moreno. Mcgehee. Mendenhall? Lets just get Davis out of retirement and kick ass for another supebowl

If he is healthy this is a solid back for the rotation, and we can take bets on which one will fumble at the more crucial time…him or Moreno.

I just wasn’t impressed with him last year with Pittsburgh. And shouldn’t someone get cut pretty soon? That back field is getting pretty dang crowded.

Mendenhall has never been an impressive player. He doesn’t read blocks well which is why he struggles to carry a good YPC throughout his career with 4.45 speed at 225 pounds. The physical tools are (or at least were there) but the vision just isn’t there.

Add to that he’s missed significant playing time 2 of his 5 years. Has had consistent problems fumbling. Is an average at best blocker and catcher… he’s ok to add to the roster for the right price but this is nothing to be excited about.

He isn’t a guy that’s going to be a threat to make a big play anymore than Moreno. And he isn’t a guy that’s great at short yardage since he hesitates to hit the hole hard.

There is a very good reason Pittsburgh is letting him go.

I wouldn’t drop anyone yet until we either signed another back or wait till we have to cut in training camp. You never know with injuries. We have had especially bad luck with RBs. I think it would be really dumb to release someone right now.

I don’t get it if we sign Mendenhall. He is a sightly better runner then Moreno, Doesn’t catch as well, and fumble just as often. His only upside is that he has actually been able to stay healthy for an entire season. Something Moreno has yet to do!

For Denver’s backfield I’d like to see them Draft a big power runner. Keep Moreno to split carries with and Hillman as the change of pace RB. Resign Hester as the FB. This leaves the team short 1 running back but I’m sure they can find someone cheap to fill the “I’m wearing street clothes on game day” role.

    He just signed with Arizona

Thankfully Mendenhall has signed with the Cards.

I agree about the bad luck piece, but that’s still a lot to take to training camp. Especially if they all have to get paid shortly to end up dropping later, but still getting hit against the cap.
