Greg Knapp

New Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp.

Greg Knapp‘s exit out of the AFC West didn’t last long.

Two weeks after he was fired as offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders, Knapp has been tapped to coach quarterbacks for the Denver Broncos, likely completing their coaching moves this offseason. The role of QB Coach was opened after Adam Gase was promoted from that position to offensive coordinator. The previous Broncos offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy, accepted the San Diego Chargershead coaching position.

Clearly this division likes to keep its coaching trees all in the family.

“Greg is a proven, experienced coach with a very impressive background working with quarterbacks,” head coach John Fox said in a statement. “He’s had success with Pro Bowlers and established players while also being instrumental in the development of younger quarterbacks. I’ve coached against him for a number of years and have a lot of respect for him. We are pleased to add someone of his caliber to our coaching staff.”

Knapp, an 18-year NFL coaching vet, was fired as offensive coordinator in Oakland after one season because he never got the ground game going. The team finished 28th in rushing in 2012, and Darren McFadden went from being a five-yard-per-carry back to averaging 3.3 per carry in 2012.

But the Broncos didn’t hire him to coach running backs, they hired him to coach Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, and his success with quarterbacks is well-documented.

Carson Palmer, for instance, had a relatively successful 2012, leading the Raiders to the eighth-ranked passing attack and enjoying 22 touchdowns to just 14 interceptions. Quarterbacks under Knapp have reached the Pro Bowl nine times, and he’s coached the likes of Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, and Matt Schaub as starters in the league.

With years of NFL experience as OC and QB coach, he’ll be a valuable asset to Gase in his first year as offensive coordinator. And maybe he’ll even be a valuable asset to Peyton Manning as well.

Certainly seems qualified. He has that ugly Raiders look though.

On a different note, Mr. East was right. Darren McFadden didn’t have a good year, like I was saying in the offseason that he would.

Ya got me, East, Denver’s run defense really was *that* bad. McFadden isn’t one of the top backs today, but that’s a good thing for us.

“He has that ugly Raiders look though.”

    LMAO!

  • Doom92

Maybe this is the guy they got to give that look too Fox when he tries to puss out and just run on 3rd&7 to win a play-off game or sit on it with 31sec and 2 time outs…

  • Pete Baron

    haha. Outstanding!!!
I say we hire Gruden as our sideline bully. He’d be better at giving Fox those looks. Tell him he can keep his ESPN gig and that we will only need him for 3 hours a week. haha

  • anthony33

Having trouble understanding this move. The guy has not had a job longer than two years. He supposedly specializes in the west coast offense, which you will never see Peyton run. Plus I just hate anything coming from that organization.
That said, the ONLY reason I can see for this hire is to prep Brock in running the WCO when Manning calls it quits. Period.

  • Pete Baron

That was my thinking too. This is an Osweiller move.

  • Doom92

I’d love that. That John is by far my favorite dude in football, bar none. I love me some Chucky… ;-).

  • TheTroglodyte

    LOL!

  • TheTroglodyte

I’m all in for anything that gets Gruden on our sideline

    Three Johns in Dove Valley?

(Sung to the tune: Three coins in the Fountain – by Frank Sinatra, Pat Bowlen – Chairmen of the Board)

Three Johns (Jons?) in Dove Valley,
    Each one seeking pass progress.
    Thrown by three hopeful QBs,
Which one will our Johns so bless?

Three smarts on the coaching staff,
Each one longing for a dome.
There they lie on the iron grid
Somewhere in the south of Home.

Which ring will the coach possess?
Which ring will the coach possess?

    Three Johns in Dove Valley,
Through the blitzes still so hardy.
Just one John will be granted,
    One coach will hoist Lombardi.

    Make it mine!
    Make it mine!
    Make it mine!

  • Cheyenne Kid

LOL guys. Sure needed it today and the song is great, ref. Hope this is a good hire. Only time will tell and we have plenty of time to evaluate everything,at least til the draft in April!

  • Doom92

No different that Gase as OC, he’s never called an O before and they made him OC just to keep him from going to SD… So simply flip a coin and you’ve got your answer!!!

  • anthony33

Doom – I actually thought the Gase move was a good one. Any time up can pormote within it keeps stability in most cases. Gase has learned under McDipshit, McCoy and Manning. He is intimately familiar with everything that transpired over the past four years. Seems like a bright guy and looking forward to what he brings to the table. I don’t agree with the yes man comments a lot of people have been making. IMO Elway has already had the talk with Fox about going for the kill. You could just kind of read that in the joint presser. Yes, Fox may be the HC, but Elway is going to steer him in the direction he wants, which is NOT running on 3 and 7 with a chance to lock the game up.
    However, Knapp… why?

  • anthony33

Ref – where in the world do you come up with this stuff? LMAO

  • areferee

You KNOW we have warped minds. Too much blowing into the whistle.

  • Doom92

Yes I already understand all those things but still see it that they did not want him to go to SD, but thank you for sharing that with me. I hope your right with Elway talking to fox but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it were just the opposite, reading into things has cost many a person their job, not just in football. Elway seems to think Fox is a demi-god and can do no wrong. Its either that or he is a big fat liar on being transparent!!!

Knapp – Why not Knapp he has as much juice as anyone that was Availible… Oh yes and besides – As the Trogger pointed out he seems to be good at mean muggin’…lmao.

  • Doom92

All joking above and below aside I agree Jon. He didn’t get picked because he sucks and doesn’t know what he is doing. The is no question in my mind that they evaluate hiring a coach much the same way they evaluate a player in the way that they can not only help but fit in with the rest of the team and/or staff. I think, he more than likely, loves the chance to be involved with Manning and I’m sure he can teach Brock the Crock a thing or to.

Yes that means I do not think that Brock is our future. He will be like Griese and follow Manny for a few years and when its time for him to take over he will have very minimal success and ultimately be given up on and rightfully slow. Hey you can all be proud and say you heard it here first… But I guess that is all for later discussion ;-)…lol.

  • anthony33

We just come from a different POV on Fox. Time will eventually tell, but what I see is a guy who took a team that was in shambles and turned them into a decent team. Elway, of course, was a major factor and no doubt Manning could probabaly take any team in the NFL to the playoffs. Still, I think Fox has a good temperment for coaching, more like John Harbaugh, but I do agree I’d like to see him be more aggessive.
Now that the organization is back as one of the elite franchises, perhaps a Gruden or Cowher is in the cards if Elway decided to make a change after next season. However, I do think Fox and the Bronx will finish the job next year!!

    Why do you dislike Brock?
