The game of coaching musical chairs has begun.

In Chicago, the Bears have fired head coach Lovie Smith and are now seeking his replacement. Per a report from NFL Insider Jay Glazer, Chicago has already asked permission to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy for their vacant head coaching gig.

McCoy has been credited for helping Denver’s offense lead the NFL in rushing last season after successfully running a read-option offense with Tim Tebow at quarterback.  This season, the offense has been even more effective with Peyton Manning at the helm and Denver finished as the No. 1 seed in the AFC Playoff race.

Obviously, McCoy is one of the top head coaching candidates of 2013.  We expect many more teams will come calling, and it seems unlikely that McCoy will stay in Denver.

That’s not the end of the world for Denver, though.  It could actually work out for the Broncos benefit.

Last offseason, the Broncos lost a great defensive coordinator in Dennis Allen when the coach left to run the Raiders.  The Broncos then found an upgrade in Jack Del Rio, who will also be a head coach candidate this offeason, and went on to have the No. 2 defense in the NFL this season.

The Broncos could find themselves in a similar situation with McCoy this offseason.  Manning is basically his own offensive coordinator and Peyton’s former offensive coach, Tom Moore, is currently an “offensive consultant” for the Titans.  Unless Moore is upgraded to a coordinator position in Tennessee, the Broncos could snatch him away to replace McCoy in Denver.

What are your thoughts?  Would McCoy be a big loss for Denver’s offense? Dish out your thoughts in the comments below!

I’m ok with this. It’s the Jack Del Rio request that will have all of our collective breaths being held.

i absolutely agree. McCoy is a great coach, but we can do it also without him having Peyton, instead we absolutely need Jack Del Rio stay with us.

yeah…. good luck with Cutler the coach killer lol. We’ll stay and enjoy the easy breathing in the mountains

I could be way off, but never was sold on McCoy. We might have a problem bringing in a top tier guy because Manning is the de facto coordinator but I think there is room for an upgrade here.

Completely agree. There were times I wanted to scream at McCoy last season. Although, I’m not so sure if it was so much McCoy or Fox that was responsible for making me upset with the offensive conservativeness.

I could only assume that if McCoy leaves, we’ll promote from within. I don’s say this because no coaches would want to coach Manning, quite the opposite actually, it’s just that no way in hell do we completely change terminology during this period of time. Promote from within, and the terminology stays the same instead of someone trying to blaze their own trail through here.

The biggest difference in the offense’s performance between 2011 and 2012 is number 18.

I have a problem with allowing interviews with ANY coach during the season. If they are truly interested in any particular coach, make them wait until after our last game. I am more interested in the fairness to the team, as a whole, rather than any individual.

Manning is basically running Moore’s offense. I don’t believe there would be any bumps in the road created by bringing in Moore.

  • Pete Baron

Only terminology differences. Like Manning said in the offseason, he’d rather learn new terminology instead of everyone else learning new terminology. I think if anyone comes in, it’ll be everyone learning new terminology. If Moore comes in (I’d love that), everyone would have to learn new terminology but Manning. That’s a lot of change for a team that just dismantled a bitter rival to secure the #1 seed. I’d think the Broncos would want as little change as possible (new players not-without-standing).

  • Pete Baron

I have always felt this way.

Why would they have to change any terminology? Moore’s not dumb, he can figure what Manning has in place.

  • Pete Baron

Why else even hire a coordinator then? Ya know? I mean, between the two of us, we’ll ask a fraction of the price that Moore will command, and we won’t bring anything to the table, just as Moore wouldn’t have to if he simply learned what our offense is. It’s a win/win for us! lol
Hiring a coordinator from outside the organization must mean that things change, or else you wouldn’t hire him. If you hire from within, then you are saying “things will stay the same, we’re simply letting another set of eyes break down film for Peyton”

The only reason we would hire would be to replace somebody that left, it’s not like Denver is looking to make big changes and replace people.

I think Moore would be a smooth transition because we’re basically already running his offense. I agree that promoting from within is the most likely option, but I don’t think we would need to change much by bringing in Moore.

    I know it’s impossible……….…
But I really hope Chicago hires McDaniels, just to see Cutler’s face.

  • Pete Baron

And I do love me some Moore. He is an astoundingly large upgrade over McCoy, so I’ll welcome him with open arms.

    Agreed.

  • Doom92

    Could NOT agree more ref…

  • Doom92

Yep but while an interview might happen I think that him being this fresh off J-Vill he won’t get hired. I’d be very surprised. Of course it would not surprise me if that Shad character hired him back…lol.

  • Doom92

Hmmm nope I disagree I think it’s much more of a blend than what they ran in Indy. I think McCoy has done a fine job at adjusting and so has Peyton.

Bringing Moore in might not be bad but you would see half of the O change… Including a good portion of the terminology!!!
