Last week the Denver Broncos released 2013 Pro Bowl numbers for players on the team whom were placing in the top five of their individual positions. Denver currently employs an astounding fifteen players that are receiving top five votes:
Broncos’ quarterback (and NFL MVP candidate) Peyton Manning currently leads the NFL in fan votes for the 2013 Pro Bowl. New England Patriots Tom Brady (another MVP candidate), Houston Texans running back Arian Foster, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (the final of the top three MVP candidates) and Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers account of the rest of the top five in fan voting. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, Washington Redskins Robert Griffin III, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan are all in the top ten (in that order).
Denver has faced six of the players in the top nine in Pro Bowl voting (didn’t count Manning, for obvious reasons) and have a record of 2-3 against those teams.
While Manning may be a welcome surprise, Von Miller and Champ Bailey will be and have been perennial top vote getters. Ryan Clady and Elvis Dumervil seem to be in the conversation annually as well. Zane Beadles is a surprise, as is Wesley Woodyard who is playing his first season as a full time starter. Incredibly safety David Bruton is in third place as a special teams player (that one is strictly on fans of the Broncos), without any major season defining play. Kick returner/punt returner Trindon Holliday and center Dan Koppen, both players who didn’t even start the season as starters on Denver’s roster are also in third place.
Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is only in third place amongst AFC wide receivers, despite gaudy numbers and leading the league for portions of the season. Punter Britton Colquitt is also in fourth place for AFC punters despite having the lowest average return in the AFC (4.6 yards). That leaves us with the final three Broncos that are in the top five for their positions fullback Chris Gronkowski, free safety Rahim Moore and kicker Matt Prater could increase their chances of a trip to Honolulu with strong showings this weekend.
Fan voting wraps up Monday and accounts for one-third of total votes– player and coach voting account for the other two-thirds. So get in and vote now or forever hold your peace. Of course all of Denver fans efforts could be fruitless if the Broncos make it to the Super Bowl
