When Brian Dawkins retired the Denver Broncos knew they were going to have a hole to fill. Dawkins wasn’t elite as he once was, but was still good enough to start on most NFL teams. John Elway set out to find some veteran leadership to fill out the depth on that part of the roster and for the most part succeeded.
In a way, this position may see the most fluidity in who starts as the season goes on. There is just too much experience and talent at the position to be absolutely sure who will end up finishing the season as a starter.
Mike Adams
As strong safety, Mike Adams will be tasked with being the veteran leader in the defensive backfield. Last season was the first time in his nine year career where he was a 16 game starter, so the jury is definitely out on whether he will build upon the breakout season he had last year. (Profile)
Rahim Moore
After a rough rookie campaign, Rahim Moore looks like a completely different person. He is still a young player though, and if he makes too many mistakes there is a hungry veteran behind him on the depth chart that would love to be out there playing football. I like the depth at the safety position so much, that I’m not worried at all about how is out there starting. (Profile)
Jim Leonhard
Speaking of the hungry veteran, Jim Leonhard impressed me with his smarts with the three or four New York Jets games I watched last year. If the Broncos defense gets into any kind of trouble from the two starters above, Jim Leonhard is someone they would be able to turn to if things got too rough. (Profile)
Quinton Carter
Playing opposite Brian Dawkins last year probably helped Quinton Carter’s development more than anything, but the Broncos still felt they need to update the position with the addition of Mike Adams. I don’t think Carter’s play warranted the demotion, but long term I see Carter and Rahim Moore being the pair that plays for a good many years together on the back end of the defense. (Profile)
David Bruton
Here’s a guy that just won’t let the sigma of Josh McDaniels bring him down. David Bruton has molded himself into a special teams ace. You can find him in on most tackles that occur on special teams and his value there more than warrants a roster spot. He’s definitely giving me that Keith Burns vibe as I’ve said once before. BT Projected Starters: Mike Adams, Rahim Moore (Something tells me this will change…)
