3. Cornerback depth promises offensive gains; Tracy Porter starts opposite Champ Bailey
Another boon to the Broncos’ 2012 roster, particularly at wide receiver, is its depth at the position’s opposition — the Broncos are currently enjoying a large influx of quality cornerbacks. Free agents Tracy Porter and Drayton Florence, along with rookies Omar Bolden (fourth round) and Coryell Judie (undrafted) add to an already talented set of DB’s that promise to give opposing Broncos QB’s trouble in the regular season.
In the meantime, though, they’re going to work making Manning and the receivers better.
“What a great opportunity for these receivers going against these corners,” Manning said. “If you can’t get better going against some of these top cover corners, it’s just not meant to be. It’s a great challenge for everybody.”
The opportunity goes both ways. Champ Bailey was asked if practicing against Manning requires something extra.
“Mentally, yeah,” Bailey responded. “You’ve got to be on your game mentally, because he knows what [defense] you’re in for the most part. It’s just about playing the right technique and things like that, kind of getting the guys around you to tip us off to what they might be doing offensively.”
Tracy Porter reportedly started opposite Champ Bailey in Monday’s workout, which is as we would have guessed, but expect every spot in the CB depth chart to be one of the most intriguing battles in Denver’s 2012 training camp.
