This is an opinion article and does not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the rest of the BT staff.

Of course, I must first start with a disclaimer:  I have been following quarterback Tim Tebow since his sophomore season at the University of Florida and have been a big fan of him since his collegiate football days.  I will continue to follow him throughout his career and acknowledge that he is an incredible athlete, fantastic football player and a great person with commendable character.

With that said, I have become increasingly disappointed and extremely frustrated with the magnitude of Broncos fans who have also followed Tebow — some of whom followed him all the way to New York.  There’s nothing wrong with being a fan of Tebow and hoping he has success with his new team, but some facts need to be set straight.

“I have been a Broncos fan for [a certain amount of] years but I despise the way John Elway treated Tim Tebow and will have trouble rooting for Denver this season,” has been said countless times on this site and many others since the team traded Tebow.  We’ll talk about that, first.

Elway — though he did have a hand in the process — was not the one that “ran Tebow out of town.”  If you’re still bitter about it and want to have somebody to blame, spit your venom toward Owner Pat Bowlen, not Elway.  It was Bowlen who initiated moving on from Tebow.

Many fans mention all of Tebow’s heroics from 2011 and the fact that he won a playoff game in Denver last season.  Those same fans fail to mention all of the horrendous performances — including one a week after Tebow’s playoff victory — in a Denver Broncos‘ uniform.

Bowlen, who is looking for perfection in a quarterback, has one goal in mind and that is to win a Super Bowl.  Nothing comes before that — not money, jersey sales or fans’ opinions — and nothing will stop Bowlen from doing what he believes gives Denver the best chance to win a Super Bowl.  A 45-10 embarrassing playoff loss to the New England Patriots was the final straw for Bowlen, who had seen Tebow struggle mightily four times earlier in the season.

After the game, in which Tebow went 9-of-26 for 136 yards and was sacked five times (fumbling once), a Denver Post columnists quoted Bowlen as saying he wanted to win Championships, not Division Titles.  Fair or not, Bowlen was ready to move on from Tebow.

Twelve weeks before Denver’s loss in Foxborough, Tebow had suffered a similar 45-10 loss at the hands of the Lions of Detroit.  Going 18-of-39 for 172 yards, Tebow’s one touchdown pass was matched by an interception returned for a touchdown and doubled by a fumble that was also returned for a score.

Since becoming the starter a week before the loss to the Lions, Tebow had now been sacked thirteen times and fumbled four times in a mere two games.  Bouncing back, Tebow would go on to have a hot streak — which has been well documented – that ultimately earned Denver a playoff birth.

In reality however, Denver backed into the playoffs with an 8-8 record after losing all of their final three contests of the 2011 season.  In those three games, Tebow threw one touchdown and four interceptions, rushed for three touchdowns and was sacked ten times.

A week later, Tebow defeated a Pittsburgh Steelers team in a game that will be forever remembered in Broncos’ history.  It was all for naught however as Denver would prove the following week that they were not prepared to face the true powers of the AFC en route to the Super Bowl.

Since then, Bowlen has instructed his front office to bring a quarterback that is capable of matching up with, and defeating, the big boys of the AFC.  Elway and Co. brought in Manning for that purpose, and in the process traded away a quarterback in whom the team’s owner was no longer confident his leadership could win a Super Bowl.

The fans response has been to ridicule and harass Broncos’ Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway on social media sites and talk radio shows.  The reason being, Elway supported Bowlen’s opinions of Tebow and has been the face of the franchise since he returned to the team as a front office executive last off-season.

So stop saying “Elway ran Tebow out of town.”  If you really want to, say “Bowlen instructed Elway to run Tebow out of town and he followed instructions.”  More accurately, Bowlen instructed EFX — Elway, Head Coach John Fox and General Manager Brian Xanders –  to bring in a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback.

Secondly, I want to discuss the belief that “Denver stabbed Tebow in the back.”  This is the NFL; players are traded every day.  And by-the-way, the Indianapolis Colts did the exact same thing to Peyt0n Manning.

That’s right, the same man that some fans are hoping injures himself this season to “serve the Broncos right!”  That is so uncalled for and disgusting but a subject for another time.  In the words of Tebowmaniacs, “he was disrespected by the team that he had shed blood sweat and tears for on the football field and was stabbed in the back after doing everything in his power to help his team win.”

That’s right, the Colts cut Peyton Manning, who won four League MVP Awards while with the team, because it was the best move for their franchise.  How could they release a player that earned the fourth-most wins in the NFL history?  That’s uncalled for, and it’s not fair!

Do you hear the Tebow fans saying that?  Nope.

Stop with the “Denver stabbed Tebow in the back” nonsense.  They made a football decision, a very hard one , because they think it was the best move for the franchise.  They took a risk — gasp! — because that’s what it takes to get anywhere in this life, and in the NFL.

Just move on.  Tebow is gone!  Get over it.  If this comes back to bite the Broncos in the butt, we’ll talk about it then.  Let’s not worry that could happen and let’s certainly not “hope” that it does like many “Bronco fans” say they do.

If the Denver Broncos go on hot streak and make a Super Bowl run with Peyton Manning at the helm, every Bronco fan will be excited about it.  If you wouldn’t be excited to see Peyton Manning leading the Denver Broncos to victory, dare I ask, are you really even a fan?

To be clear, I’m not trying to deny or belittle the great things Tebow did while with the Denver Broncos.  I am however trying to suggest that we move on from the subject and wait and see how this season turns out before casting judgment on Denver’s front office, particularly John Elway, who has taken a lot of heat over the situation.

    Boom. owned

  • Man_one

You realize that it’s because of nut-jobs like yourself that Elway had no choice but to trade him.

I think I speak for many people when I say we don’t care if your a Bronco fan. If you want to change your alliegences because of a completely irrational take on the situation influenced solely by media drama then go for it. Frankly I just don’t want to see your crying. Go write on a Jets blog about how lucky they are and quit being an internet drama queen. Goodbye and good riddance.

  • Former Elway fan

It wasn’t his only option.  Are you freaking kidding me????? How about getting down there on the field, busting his butt and giving some pointers to a man that couldn’t play because of the lock out?  How about not doing everything begrudgingly because the fans loved Tebow?  He couldn’t wait to get rid of Tebow.  You know… I have been a Bronco’s fan for 30 years and stood by Elway through thick and thin.  His fake posturing is the last straw….

  • Former Elway fan

You couldn’t read past the 3rd sentence because the truth hurts and like Elway you just can’t stand it.

  • Man_one

Raw Authentic Proof: Tebow siders are Hype-wagon riders and no nothing about football.

Wah! Wah!  You sound like a crying baby, or a scorned lover.  Timmy is never going to be a good QB that will win Championships.  Timmy has a great work ethic, but he is never going to beat the likes of Brady, Eli, Brees, and any other elite QB in this league.  Get over yourself.

As I said in another reply to your ramblings, you cannot have two completely different QB’s who play completely different from each other, and expect an offense to be tailored to both.  Not going to happen.  Timmy is a great athlete, trying to play QB.  It’s done.  Go root for another team.

Lick my balls Jon and Gmac5

  • Man_one

It was completely innacurate and nothing was well said. You dunce.

  • Man_one

Laws of reason do not apply to Tebowmania.

  • Man_one

    Nailed it. Truth.

  • Former Elway fan

I was an Elway and Broncos fan for 30 years! This decision has not come lightly.  I don’t know right now who I will root for.  If Elway leaves, it might be my beloved Broncos.  This is not about whether or not Timmy is a good QB today.  This is about potential, and he has got it! Denver has sucked for years and I stood by rooting for them and never gave up.  However, Elway finally did it and has lost my respect because he didn’t have the balls to say “Timmy just doesn’t cut it and never will”.  Had he done that, things might be different for a lot of former Elway fans….

  • Former Elway fan

And Elway needs to learn that it isn’t always about Elway.

  • Man_one

    Amen

  • Man_one

Did you not get enough attention from your mom when you were young or something? I mean f***.

  • Anonymous

Sheesh… If you are so over the Broncos because Timmy isn’t the QB due to “Elway not treating him like a little princess that he is”, then just go away.  You offer nothing other than your opinion.  Timmy is gone.  Get over it, or go somewhere else.

Here is a great fact for you:  If it weren’t for Prater, Denver would not have won as many games as they did in that winning streak.  Yeah, I know what you’re going to say “but if it weren’t for Timmy they wouldn’t have been in the position to win.”  That has merit, but Prater still has to kick the field goal.  But then what about the final 3 games of the season, where it was win 1 and you’re in???  Where was Timmy then?  They had a low scoring game against the Cheifs AT FRICKIN HOME, and they couldn’t win.

I am elated that EFX (with the leadership of Mr. Bowlen) to have picked up one of the greatest QB’s to ever play the game.  No, this isn’t the same as what the Chiefs when they picked up Montana.

  • Former Elway fan

Just like the author, these are my opinions.  He has the right to his and I have the right to mine.  Elway was my football hero and after 30 years it has all changed.  Never thought I would see the day.  So, I believe my opinion does carry some weight whether you like it or not.

  • Man_one

Last year was the only year ever in the nfl that luck has actually won a team 8 games in a year.

  • Former Elway fan

They “might” know more about football but they know little about human decency.  Who are you to say that Timmy can’t learn with the right support.  I remember years and years and years of Elway and his continual interceptions.  Fans were going crazy with anger.  He worked on it over time and became better.  Who are to say that Tebow can’t too? WITH support from the right “caring” people and owners.  Not sure it is the Jets but no way was it Elway.

  • Anonymous

Please, don’t ever compare Timmy to Elway.  EVER.  Elway was a much better QB when he came out of college than Timmy.  Timmy is a great athlete, not a great, good or average QB.

I’m done replying to your stupid comments.

  • Former Elway fan

It “appears” that way for now. Here we go again……Elway put “himself” on the map by getting Manning. It is impressive but why wouldn’t two old quarterbacks connect and support each other? Again, the signing of Manning was a no brainer.  Duh.  I like Manning.  He is a good guy.  I used to feel that way about Elway.  Orton wasn’t treated fairly either.  Again, management and Elway decision.  Tell you one thing…. I would trust Tebow to tell the truth before I would trust Elway to.  That says a lot, at least for some people.

  • Man_one

Why we would Elway leave?? You realize he is the one engineering this entire turnaround. He’s the one who hired Fox. Tebow was Mcdaniels guy. Mcdaniels ain’t here. Elway is and he’s doing damn fine job in comparison to that yahoo.

You have no idea where Tebow’s progress will be in 3 or so years. Meanwhile I’d rather take my chances with a 4 time mvp and superbowl winner.

  • Former Elway fan

I don’t care who takes orders from whom.  Not important.  Someone in that management is lying. Which one is it?

  • Man_one

You sound like a 12 year old.

  • Former Elway fan

And leaving after 30 years.  Says something.

    Your opinions are respected.

What is not respected is your unrelenting illogicality, obtuse defensiveness, infantile argumentivity, and sheer ignorance.

Now, a flaggon of ale witch.

  • Man_one

Nope, no it doesn’t. Unless it’s that your’e mental, but I believe we have attained that.

  • Former Elway fan

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, drama queen……..Then don’t read my diatribe.  If I change my allegiance after 30 years it won’t be because of the media.  It will because of the things Elway did and didn’t say.  It will be because he paid $90M for a quarterback that “might” have two good years in him (unless he has another hard knock and neck injury in week 2). It will be because Elway tries to look like the big guy signing Manning even though it was a no brainer.  It will be because Elway put all his eggs in to one basket and doesn’t have a good back up quarterback.  It will be because he made it so the Broncos won’t have another chance of getting a another good draft pick for quarterback for years to come.  I wonder which one of us will be crying after next season and Manning limps away with lots of moola and a serious injury and there is no one to back Elway and the Broncos then.

  • Man_one

We’re all rattled by your striking insight into the conspiracy of month old momentary spoke truths. Truly moving work chap. Intrigue certainly is rising.

  • Former Elway fan

One thing was well said… Wouldn’t it be funny if we faced the Jets in a championship play off
game and Tebow was at the helm and beat the great Manning, who doesn’t
    perform well in playoff games.

  • Former Elway fan

Is that the best you got? You were right about one thing…Elway looked out for Tebow by sending him to the Jets and not live under Elway’s false pretense and feigned support.

  • Former Elway fan

Ha! Tee hee hee…. love this!

  • Former Elway fan

I agree on one thing. Prater is the man!

  • Former Elway fan

Well I for one, will be watching all the teams.  Let’s hope no one gets to Manning and hits him real hard.  Cross your fingers! Your toes! Your arms! You are going to need it.

  • Rah5241

Good God you all rant on and on. Let the season start and lets see! Go Broncos

  • Former Elway fan

It took me 30 years to feel scorned and scorched by Elway.  He should have just retired the hero of the Broncos.  His ego got in the way though.  I had hopes he would make good decisions but so far other than getting Manning he is a disappointment. And, getting Manning wasn’t exactly difficult. I hope you aren’t a scorned fan soon after Manning gets hurt and $90M later.

  • Former Elway fan

Good… stop replying. You are right. Elway WAS a great QB.  Timmy isn’t yet.  I would trust Timmy with my back.  Wouldn’t trust Elway with anything. Period.

  • Anonymous

I believe it is known better as irony.  If you don’t believe that Elway screwed Timmy it is because you’re ignorant sheeple.

  • I’m with Prior Elway Fan

Denver has been mediocre since after the 2005 season and Tebow brought life back to the a nation with such a long dry spell.  Now you’ll are talking like we are the Denver Bronco “Superstars”…as if you had something going prior to Tebow.  Well he brought our star back and lets hope an aging Manning can continue to keep us better then mediocre.

i’m in agreement with Prior Elway Fan, every time Elway was caught on camera rolling his eyes after a Tebow win made me cringe.  I believe how they handled Tebow was very bad.  This may be a business, but it’s also a group of very VERY high strung players and at the top of that are QB’s.  Elway’s ego is as big as every other QB’s if not larger.  He sympathized with Payton on being forced out of the house he built in Indy, well I can read between the lines there John and I’m with Prior Elway Fan on this particular part of the issue.  Elway definitely saw some of his thunder being stolen by one “Timmy” Tebow.

You’all can’t possibly believe that the sports “business” isn’t controlled mostly by a lot of egos.  Example, I also believe that Jim Irsay wanted Indianapolis to be known as the house that Jim Irsay built, not Payton Manning, hence bye, bye Payton…ahh, but it’s also explained away so easy as a business and a perfect storm…I call it much ado about ego.

There was no class in the way Tebow was handled after bringing some shine back to our star, none at all…not one rolled eye, not one crooked smile and not sever lousy phone calls to keep “Timmy” in a controlled hold.  BTW, I should have prefaced this post with “This is just one persons opinion”, but I would be lying.

Weren’t those “2” post season wins against the Broncos?  I suggest you lay off the recreational drugs.

The only people lying are the Teboners.  There was a time when people felt sorry for those who continued to delude themselves.

I don’t know who instigated the move to pursue Manning aggressively, it may have been Bowlen, but he is certainly behind EFX on the move.

The decision to go after Manning does reveal the FO’s assessment of the 2011 team and I do think that if that analysis is wrong EFX will be out of work 2-3 years. I think it shows that the FO believes that the team is on the rise and close to a contender, but were limited by the QB play. If they are correct we will see a playoff team next year. The Elway haters can wait until then to unleash their fury if it doesn’t work out.

As a former hard-core Cutler supporter, the past few weeks have been interesting. This same time 3 years ago, I was convinced the franchise would never recover from trading a Pro-Bowl QB for a handful of beans and a few draft picks. I have to say at the end of 2010 I was pretty down, but not everything came to pass the way I thought it would. Yes, Cutler is a much better QB than Orton. Yes, McD was a disaster as a head coach. But …. Cutler is still a tool and he’s performed well at times, but hasn’t come close to his 2008 Pro-Bowl year. Three years later we’ve signed one of the best FA QBs to hit the market and the team continues to add young FA talent to the core and I hope this year’s draft is as good as last year’s. Things are looking up for the first time since we went to the AFC Championship game.

Moves, like trading Tebow, take time to evaluate. Does anybody think the Giants paid too much for Eli now? Elway wanted to remove the distraction that Tebow brought to the team. He was successful and he upgraded (at in theory) the position at the same time. Quite a feat for a rookie FO guy.

  • Former Elway fan

Make sure Elway has Bubby Brister’s phone number because he will need it when Caleb Hanie starts backing up Manning.
