Former Denver Broncos’ draft pick, Perrish Cox, is on trial for sexual assault in a district court in Castle Rock. He is accused of having sex with a woman who was incapacitated, and he faces two years to life in prison if convicted of this and related charges.
According to news sources around Denver, Cox and current Denver Bronco Demaryius Thomas met up with this woman and one of her friends at a local club. The accuser had previously dated Thomas, and eventually went to Cox’s apartment (whom he shared with current Bronco Cassius Vaughn) where the woman fell asleep.
The accuser was not certain that she had even had sex until she proved to be pregnant, and at first she thought that Thomas was the father. DNA testing proved that Cox, however, is the father, after Cox denied that he had intercourse with her.Â
On Wednesday, Demaryius Thomas testified for the prosecution that Cox carried the passed out woman into the bedroom, and said that “I think she’s ready.” Thomas responded that he didn’t think so, dismissing Cox’s suggestion. An hour later, Thomas testified that he went home. The next morning, the accuser went to the hospital but left before evidence could be collected because she did not want to falsely accuse anyone. If she hadn’t become pregnant, it is likely no one would ever know what happened except for Cox.
Perrish Cox was released by the Broncos in training camp this year, and did not play for any NFL team in 2011. Even with an acquittal it seems likely that no team will be willing to take a chance on him, and if he is convicted he may not be out of prison before he is too old to play in the NFL in any case.
Current Bronco players still scheduled to potentially testify are Wesley Woodyard and Cassius Vaughn.
I don’t know about the rest of Bronco Country, but I can’t seem to take my eyes off this story. It’s like road kill; I don’t really want to watch, but I can’t help myself. The more I read about this, the more I am revolted by Cox’s behavior. The defense trying to paint a picture of a wild, drunken orgy, but with Thomas saying she was passed out when he left, it’s hard to buy that picture.
Given the DNA proof of his transgression, after his denial, and the witness testimony of the event, I’m leaning toward sending him away for life. In my opinion, there is simply nothing that could possibly excuse using another person that way; this is more than just a young man making a mistake. Rape is rape and intolerable in civilized society.
