Ryan McBean – Denver Broncos BT Profile

Ryan McBean will be entering his fifth year with the Denver Broncos in 2012. A free agent signing of the Broncos in 2008, McBean went from practice squad to starter in Mike Nolan‘s 3-4 defense in 2009 at defensive end, and his versatility has kept him in the Broncos’ lineup in one role or another through two defensive coordinators and a scheme change back to the 4-3 since. McBean has played in 48 career games (two postseason) with 21 starts for Denver.

2011 Analysis: McBean filled in for Brodrick Bunkley as a rotational nose tackle and, for the most part, held his own. In some ways it was a career year for McBean — he registered his first ever sack against San Diego in Week 5, then tallied three more before the season was through. While he was still susceptible against the run at times, his pass rush improved in 2011. When others on the defense commanded double teams, McBean was able to get past his block and get after the opposing quarterback a handful of times. That’s exactly what the Broncos hoped to get out of him in this role.

Contract Status: Restricted Free Agent in 2012

2012 Outlook: The Broncos defensive line played admirably for its first season in returning to the 4-3, but it wasn’t necessarily a veritable strength for the team. The Broncos will look to add depth to the defensive line in the offseason, but I don’t worry about McBean maintaining a spot on the roster; he’s gotten better year after year with the Broncos. Also consider that fellow DT’s Bunkley and Marcus Thomas are unrestricted free agents, and the Broncos have bigger fish to fry.
