The Denver Broncos, along with 29 other teams in the NFL not competing in Super Bowl XLVI, have entered full-scale scouting mode starting today. Before the Combine, and before free agency begin in March, and before the draft in April, there is the Senior Bowl, setting the premiere college seniors from the North and South against each other for the scouting, analysis, and nitpicking of professional scouts. Miss a block here and your draft stock may drop two rounds. Throw a pair of interceptions here and you’ll be off half the teams’ boards come April.

No pressure.

The Broncos arrived in Mobile, Alab., the site of the Senior Bowl, and are gameplanning. Tweets Executive VP of Football Operations John Elway:

Meanwhile, Andrew Mason of MaxDenver.com is also at Mobile and has already previewed a trifecta of players from the North and South teams each. Among his South Team “Names to Watch” for the Broncos is CB Janoris Jenkins of Northern Alabama. Among his North Team Names: Washington RB Chris Polk.

The Broncos handpicked two starting defenders from the Senior Bowl last year; we’ll be following the practice reports closely all week. Who’s on your early Broncos draft wish list, or who are you watching closely?

“Throw a pair of interceptions here and you’ll be off half the teams’ boards come April.”

Unless your board is being run by Josh McDaniels.

I don’t follow closely enough to have an informed opinion about which players to draft, but I do wonder- what are people perceiving as our priorities this draft? It would seem to me that we ought to draft the best available cornerback or DT in the first round (the ‘best player in a position of need’ approach), but that’s assuming the Broncos believe that our current safety options are going to develop next year. If they already think of Moore, Carter, and Bruton as having limited potential, then throw safety in there too. I know we need to pick up someone to help McGahee (Knowshon seems like he’s done), and add to the WR pool, but it seems like those ought to be lower picks. Thoughts?

We should stay put with the 25th pick and take Dontari Poe DT (6’5 350 pounds)

    Thank you!

I am still detoxing from Tebow Time.  Debate tonight, State of the Union tomorrow….I should have an opinion by Thur., but I am leaning toward SS and DT at that position.

    CB help..please!!

I like Janoris Jenkins as a pick. He packs alot of baggage tho,..err maybe I should say “dirty laundry”. Dre Kirkpatrick, just picked up a marijuana charge but I’d take him if he’s still on the board.

Stephen Gillmore’s name gets thrown around a bit in the first round. I dont recall seeing him play this year, so I know nothing about the guy.

We have to get a QB. Its a must have!

I agree with you we should stay put on our 25th pick and see who of the top 10 pick falls on the draft. It happen before so will see what happens. I say our first round pick should be the best available player or defense.

Look it should be painfully obvious that we need DT’s. we have a fast efficient pass rush from the edge but QB’s keep escaping through the middle because theres no push up the middle. you guys gotta keep in mind that quinton carter and rahiem moore were only rookies this year. give them time to develop, especially with dawk mentoring them. carter really stepped up this year, in particular, and moore could be great if he learns to tackle on the back end. im with Raider hater. i like dontari poe, but i also like dajoun harris from usc(or is it Harrison?). he had a great shrin game on saturday. so did akien hicks from canada, but both of them will probably be there in the later rounds.  I also think that DE would be good for denver too. because if you think about it, denver really only has one good DE and thats doom. I just dont think ayres is on the same level as doom and i dont think you can say he’s an “elite” DE. If we went and picked up a good DE then wee could rush 2 good DE’s off the line and let Von roam, which would be a night mare for QB’s having to deal with a good rush from the edges and not knowing where Vons coming from or if he’s coming at all. i think some one like Andre Branch or devon taylor would fit nicely but i think we’re too far up the board to land quinton coples.  I also like devon still(DT).

EFX should be looking at running backs and then hopefully spend the remainder of their time looking at LB’s (we desperately need and elite class MLB), DT’s (obvious) and CB’s.  Our safeties showed promise and need another year to develop.  Also, if we find a couple of good CB’s you can always move Bailey to Safety.

To me the three biggest needs are MLB, RB, CB and DT.  From there QB, WR and TE.   If you can find quality DE’s and OL’s you ALWAYS get them.

What I learned this past weekend it just how badly our defense needs to improve.  Not saying the offense is there, but a stout defense keeps you in every game.  Build that first and it allows you time to develop on the O side of the ball.

When was the last draft the Broncos went into when they did NOT need a Defensive Tackle?

Last year Prince Amukamara fell to 19 when he was projected top ten, Phil Taylor of the Browns went at 21, Jimmy Smith at 27, Mark Ingram at 28.  2010 saw Dez Bryant, Dan Williams, Jahvid Best and Kareem Jackson taken in the 20s.

I’m sure there was someone else taken at 25 in 2010 but I can’t remember who?

our team has no depth.  none.  i want to pick up the best defensive player available regardless of position.  sure, some needs are more than others.  but we need talent first and foremost.  if burfict (the asu lb) falls to 25, snap him up.  i’m good with corners not named jenkins.  if barron falls get him to rotate with dawk.

hopefully there is a run early on offense and some of these guys rated/projected in the teens fall.

on another note, i kind of like the idea of a rb in free agency again… maybe kevin smith if detroit lets him walk (which is likely, imo).  to me, unless you spend a 1-3 rounder on a rb- he’s probably not going to be any better than lance ball was last year.

CB Janoris Jenkins.  Does John Elway smoke?

Barron is a good one. As much as I’d like to see us pick him up on draft day, I think we need to give Carter and Moore another season. Rookies in the secondary get picked on every year, those two weren’t any different. They made some good plays but what they did wrong is fixable by coaching; being in the right place and tackling.

I’d like to see Peyton Hillis before Kevin Smith, but agree with you that we’d better off grabbing a RB in FA than the draft.

Depth wise..we need just about everything except for kicker and punter.

  • MeOMy

I’d like to see us pick up a DT in the first round and then pick up a S and CB in free agency. We have a lot of young people in the secondary. Lets pick up some help for them while they develop.

we do have a dt need, but the pickings this year are pretty slim.  there are only one or two that i would take first round, and i bet they will be gone by the time we pick.  we should not reach for needs, we should build solid depth instead.
