Kyle Orton

The Denver Broncos have released statements on the release of veteran QB Kyle Orton, which was reported earlier in the hour.

HEAD COACH JOHN FOX:

“I spoke with Kyle earlier today and thanked him for everything he did for the Broncos. He was a true professional throughout this season. I’ve got a great deal of respect for him as both a player and as a person.

“This was the right decision for our football team. We feel good about our quarterback group, and this gives Kyle an opportunity to help another team and showcase his talents.

“I wish Kyle and his family all the best going forward.”

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS JOHN ELWAY:

“I would like to thank Kyle for all his work with the Denver Broncos. In the three years that he’s been here, he’s been an absolute pro. We thought it was best for the Broncos at this time as well as for Kyle to catch on with a different team.

“Kyle is going to have more options in the NFL. He’ll get an opportunity to play somewhere else, and we wish him the best of luck.”

My take: that’s all very nice, but Kyle Orton would have gotten another opportunity to play anyway in 2012. If the Chiefs or Bears pick him up (word is Chicago is interested), the Broncos gave a capable starter away to an opponent they’ll have to face in a few weeks’ time.

I know a lot of you are not Orton fans, but I’d rather face Caleb Hanie or Tyler Palko before Kyle Orton every day of the week. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite the Broncos in the ass.

I agree with Monty, I would rather face Hanie or Palko than Orton.  Orton knows this defense, he knows where the weak links are.

  • Cyberspread

    Sad…

  • Anonymous

VonDoom would be salivating to go after the pocket statue for 60 minutes.

  • Anonymous

Ya know Monty, the more I think about it, the more I’m not so sure I’d rather face Palko or Hanie. Remember, the most dangerous opponent is the opponent you know nothing about.
We can gameplay for Orton, we can’t gameplan for Palko or Hanie. I mean, isn’t that the biggest reason why people claim we are having success with Tebow? They say it’s cause teams don’t have enough to film on him, and once they do, they’ll eat him alive.
Well, be consistent with that logic. We know nothing about palko and hanie, but we know everything about Orton. Orton has been figured out, and he can definitely be stopped. We’ve lost many a games to QBs who have never played in a game before. I don’t want to keep that trend going. I’d rather face Orton (known commodity) than Palko or Hanie (Wildcards).

  • King

Orton doesn’t have any more knowledge about our D than what any team can see on film.  The only thing we’ll have to do is modify our plays a little,

  • King

Yep.  Because we all know how Orton loves the taste of the pigskin.  lol

  • Disposable Hero

This is purely a salary dump…  There are 3 teams in need of a QB that may take the 2.5 million off Denver’s hands.  I’m fine w/ it.  I mean, yes I want Denver to push for the AFC West, but not like we’re winning a superbowl…  I’m fine w/ Bowlen saving 2.5 mil over a compensatory draft pick if someone picks Orton up.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

You have a point, but Orton’s experience and just plain better accuracy make up for it, IMHO.

Someone else like St. Louis might pick up Orton and this would all be a moot discussion anyway.

Good thing we didn’t trade him to the phins when we had a chance huh? Another bad move by the front office. Holding out for better picks was just wrong. Would love to be holding another pick for Orton.

  • Anonymous

The only reason he isn’t a dolphin is because he didn’t restructure his contract for Miami.  Denver and Miami had it all worked out.  Blame Orton for that not the front office

  • Anonymous

I agree, the Broncos watched Orton lose 24 games over the past 3 seasons so it wouldn’t be that difficult for them to plan for him.  Not to mention the Chicago O-line is awful.  Cutler was the 5th most sacked QB in the league before he went down.  I can only imagine what Orton would be like behind that O-line.

  • Tom9798

Not.  We are winning a superbowl!

  • Anonymous

Your constant swings at the FO are getting old.  This is the same front office that drafted Von Miller and signed Chris Harris, McGahee and Bunkley.  They also managed to get a 5th rounder for Lloyd when he would’ve walked at the end of the season for nothing.  Give it up already man.

  • King

LOl.  Do some research.  Orton turned down a 3 year/25 million dollar contract from the fish.

That trade deal not happening falls 100% on Orton.  He refused it, and the fish withdrew it.

    Truth hurts.

  • Dante Pakistan

I want some of the drugs you’re on, must be some good shit!

  • virginiabronco

Facing KO is the least of our worries.  for starters, he can’t complete a pass over 5 yards.  Broncos can put 8 in the box all day long if they face KO.  No run threat and not accurate over 5 yards.  I am glad he is gone.  Good move as well as classy by the Broncos.   Bronco’s front office now clearly positioning to draft a QB next year.

  • NMBronc

Hell no, much rather face Kyle ‘Screams like a Girl and collapses when def is within 5 ft’ Orton. Third bestd football day ever.

  • Ninjaix

Funny thing is you’re right Orton bluffed too hard now he will have to hope to get a shot will likely settle for a 1-2 year deal and 2-3 million per and backup hoping to get a shot at starting. I don’t think he’s better than Cassel and their season is lost count them out. The bears maybe but they have to know Orton is a sitting duck with that oline and will likely stick with the mobile Hannie. Only team I can think of know is probably Miami thinking that they might wanna sign him for a longer deal after the season but doubtfull. Seattle is a possibilty. But my guess is a team nobody is talking about. Washington. No confidence in their 2 qbs and how about another Grossman Orton battle for their starting QB job and Mike needs all the help he can get right now.

  • FloydOtisSammy

OK, just to be clear:  he may or may not have been many things, but it’s not accurate to say that he couldn’t complete a pass over 5 yards;  he was actually pretty accurate.  He was not as good under pressure; whether that pressure be a big rush, in the red zone, or at the end of a half or game.  But he has an above average arm, and actually has handled this whole TT issue fairly well, especially in the off-season and shortened camp, coming in ready, and winning the job outright.  I think he gave his all to us while he was here.  He’s a pro.  Wish him well.

  • Tom9798

    What!?  That’s right, what?

What hat K.O. done for the Denver Bronco’s?

  • King

I think he’ll end up with the Bears of the Chefs.  Unless the Chefs have now decided they want to continue losing with Palko so they can have their pick of QB’s in the draft.

    It’ll be interesting to watch…

  • Bryan

If Orton goes back to Chicago does that mean we can have Cutler back?

  • Jim

Upon first hearing the news I had the same concerns. After giving it some thought I think the Broncos would actually have the advantage. Besides his obvious problems once he gets in the red zone what team has a better feel for his tendencies and knows his tells better than the Broncos?

  • Anonymous

I know that doesn’t make some of you happy but it was gonna happen any way. I no more think Orton is right for the Broncos as Tebow, but I do wish him the best and hope he lands where its right for him. Like him or don’t like him I feel like he gave what he had to give while he was here!

I think the best place for him might be in Houston.

  • Anonymous

Agree.  I’d much rather face Orton.  We know all you have to do is keep it close until the 4th quarter and wait for him to throw the game away.

Cutler was sacked all the time and he’s mobile!  Miller and Doom will crush him.

  • Anonymous

Just saw on pro football talk that he was claimed by the Bears.  Good call.

  • Anonymous

He’s with the Bears according to PFT.

    Oops… never mind…. not confirmed.

  • NMBronc

He was wussy, who was vastly overpaid.

  • Anonymous

    Nicely said and great handle!

  • Anonymous

I heard on his way out of the building he saw a Von Miller Fat Head, panicked and fell down.

As of yet, I haven’t been able to confirm the validity of this story though.

  • Anonymous

    Good take!

  • flbronc

    he’s better than lineart.

  • Chrisgrayarea

Tebow can win! Check this story out! http://www.sbnation.com/account/confirm/mpDn0RYA

  • NMBronc

    That is awesome!  LOL

  • virginiabronco

IT is unbelievable the poor (or suppressed) memories many of my fellow broncos fans have.  Most of KO’s passing yardage came from runs after the catch. You do remember Brandon Marshall?   How many under thrown balls did he come back to catch and turn into big plays? KO rarely even attempted throws of more than 10 yards.  He was certainly accurate inside of, ok, I will give him 8 yards, but after that he was hardly any more accurate than Tebow!  One big difference, Tebow is at least getting an opportuinty to throw long.  KO was not even allowed to throw long more than once or twice a game because the coaches knew the result would be an interception or incompletion.  How many times can you remember KO marching us down the field when it mattered by connecting with even medium range passes?  How many 3 and outs do you recall with KO? I do wish him well and I am glad he is gone.  The fact that a pro with his tenure had to even “compete” for his job with this group of QB’s on the sidelines should tell you something about the strenghth and accuracy of his arm.  Unbelievable.  Maybe we should all be required to go back and watch a few KO games.  Even go back to CHicago.  He has never been a long passer and does not have the arm strenght to hit the distance runners in stride or the deep outs.  Just watch the games.  Better yet, just review our record with KO at the helm.

  • virginiabronco

He can’t get the ball in the endzone. That was his tendency.

  • virginiabronco

One more point, if KO has such an accurate and stong arm and considered such a great passer, why did Chicago let him go in the first place for (at the time) head case Cutler who does have a strong arm and can complete passes in 3rd down situations which keep the changes moving?  I know jdkchem carries KO’s water but 8 more people agreed with Floyd?  How many relatives does KO have posting in here?

Chicago is a good team. They have the ability to beat Denver with Dan Orlovsky if their defense shows up.

It would be an epic embarrassment if Orton goes to Chicago and beats Denver.

  • hello

just because marshall was a beast after the catch doesnt mean that orton couldnt throw deep. those are seperate points. and it´s just not true that orton wasnt ever allowed to throw long. yes, i agree in his first year in denver he didnt get much room to throw. but in his second they really opened up the playbook for him. they learned that he could make more throws than he was given credit for. yes, when he came in to denver that was the knock on him – that he was only able to make the short throws. but you cant just live by reputations. orton taught us that he was more than that. how do you explain brandon lloyd´s 1400 receiving yds? his league leading yds/catch? lloyd certainly wasnt a YAC guy. Orton threw it deep to him. do you remember orton fitting the ball in to lloyd in the back of the endzone over 3 ravens dbs for a 50 yd td? orton matured and grew while in denver.

  • hello

having said that, im all for tebow starting over orton. i agree that orton wasnt doing it for us – not enough clutch in him. i just dont like seeing him bashed when i think he came in here and handled everything really well, like a pro should, with a lot of poise. you gotta at least respect the guy. and chicago traded him for cutler because cutler is way more talented (altho i hate him).

Trog I almost spit coffee out of my nose…that there is funny.

Did you gargle after writing that?

  • King

Why do you always insult someone when they post something you don’t agree with?

Something for you to consider about yourself, perhaps…
