Kyle Orton

The Denver Broncos have waived QB Kyle Orton, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

The decision is financially driven, per the report. The Broncos have no plans to use Orton the rest of the 2011 season with Tim Tebow now starting, and they owe Orton $2.5 million over the remainder of his contract. With injuries to Matt Cassel of the Chiefs, Matt Schaub of the Texans, and Jay Cutler of the Bears, the Broncos are hoping a team will place a waiver claim for Orton, letting them off the hook for the remainder of his contract.

Kansas City and Chicago both loom on the Broncos remaining schedule; if either claims Orton, the Broncos won’t be saying goodbye to their former starter for long.

    Like I posted at MHR,
What changed that NOW we need a roster spot?
What changed that NOW we need to free up cap space?

Is this a courtesy to Orton because there have been a rash of *pocket passers* getting injured, and he’s just sitting on the sidelines collecting a paycheck?
Is it because he’s a locker room distraction? Are we trying to pick up a free agent, or someone who is now available (sharper?)? Are we trying to keep J. Johnson from going back to practice squad? Did someone go down today with injury that hasn’t been reported yet? Was there some sort of scuffle between whoever and Orton or Orton backers?

Something must have happened that nobody knows about, which I’m fine with, because believe it or not, we don’t need to know EVERYTHING.

This is seriously a sad showing from Broncos front office.

Orton could have been traded for a fair price, but instead they wage a war with their fan base for nothing.

This is like when they traded Jabar Gaffney for Jeremy Jarmon, but they eventually cut Jarmon. Therefore, the trade was a solid receiver for nothing.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

The trade deadlines has passed, so that wasn’t an option. The motives behind the decision are financial, as explained in the most recent version of the article (originally this post was one sentence saying “More soon.”)

My guess is that what changed now is that there is a very high possibility that another team will pick him up off waivers and claim that contract, thus saving the Broncos 2.5 million AND allowing them to let Orton go with some good will left.

With injuries to Cutler, Cassel and Schaub, all those teams are looking for someone to take care of the shop for the rest of the season. 2 of those 3 teams are competetive. Plus, Orton has already played for 1 of the teams.

We have a QB on the practice squad we can promote, so there is no reason to keep his spot, and to keep paying him. If waiving him now means Chicago picks him up, the Broncos save money, and Orton gets another chance.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

Also, Orton at this time is well beyond having any trade value; the deadline passed weeks ago, and he will be a free agent at the end of the season anyway. There’s no trade value left. They would’ve had to make that decision before they benched him.

  • Dante Pakistan

Classy move by the Broncos. Orton has been a class act with all this Tebow drama, he isn’t going to play anyone, too late to trade him; let him go to a team, get his value back up. Best of luck to him! How many teams release their best QB in the middle of the season? I don’t want to hear shit about Tebow, he’s not a QB, you have to be able to complete passes to be considered a QB.

I haven’t seen it anywhere but wouldn’t be surprised if Orton ends up in Saint Louis to give Bradford a break.  That team ain’t going anywhere and Bradford’s clearly going to need some time before he gets a grip on that playbook.  The majority of Orton’s money has already been paid out, so he’s a much more attractive financial prospect than he was before the season started (at least for this season).  Give the fans something to watch and save your $60 million dollar investment in Bradford for next season.  And We all know how Josh McDaniels likes to recycle players he’s familiar with.

I have a question though.  How the heck does the waiver wire work anyway? Does it change week to week or does it stay the same all season?  I looked around and couldn’t find the current waiver order so I was wondering.  If its based on record week to week, than I’d guess St. Louis or Seattle as likely landing spots.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

I think it’s an idiotic move if anyone on our remaining schedule picks him up. I could see the Pats putting in a claim too.

Let’s INCREASE our opponent’s chance to win to save a few bucks! Hooray!

  • Jlhawkins

also we could have gotten a draft pick when he walked but not know… this is simply another $$$ move.  hope he doesnt come back to beat us in the next 6 weeks.

  • Anonymous

FINALLY we can get a team captain that actually plays in the games!

  • Anonymous

What makes you think that anyone on our team should, would, or does fear anything Orton has to bring as an opponent?
Miller and Doom are probably sacrificing any animal they can find to hope that KC or Chicago pick him up so they can have about 10 sacks each.

  • Jlhawkins

espn is saying Chi will put in claim

  • Anonymous

He wont. Our D would be salivating at the chance to play against a QB who they know inside and out, and know crumbles under pressure, and is as immobile as a skyscraper.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

If I were Chicago, I would.

Chicago knows exactly what they get in Kyle Orton. They know exactly what they get in Caleb Hanie.

One is clearly a better option than the other. Orton will play the best football he can play hoping to get picked up next year or he’ll be out of the league. But he gives Chicago their best chance to survive to the playoffs and hope Cutler can come back for that.

  • Anonymous

lol. The Broncos DIDN’T release their best QB.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Classy move by the Broncos; now Orton can go to a QB-needy team and play this season. Apposed to sitting on the bench in Denver.

Great move for both sides involved.

  • flbronc

with their ol, he’ll crumble every other play.  at least cutler could run away from some of the sacks.  ko can’t.

  • Dante Pakistan

True, I guess Quinn is still on the roster.

  • flbronc

but it is a totally new offense that they run…  at least hanie knows the offense.  kyle’s a smart guy, he picked up the mcd playbook ok, but it will take time to adjust.  by the time he adjusts cutler will likely be back.

  • flbronc

guess this puts the ‘week to week’ status on hold for tebow.

  • Anonymous

Don’t forget about Webber. What if another team put a claim in for him? If they did, the only way we keep Webber on our team is to sign him to roster. If we don’t, he goes the way of Enron Riley.

  • johnny

Orton can finally help the broncos win a game if the Bears or KC picks him up…hope, hope, hope

The talking Rice heads on espn sure are giddy over the hope the bears get orton, hoo boy would that be funny if the bears get their crap back!

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

He’s better than Tyler Palko, and he’s better than Caleb Hanie, and that’s just fact.

  • Anonymous

I can definitely see KC putting in a claim, winning their next four and then rolling into town with the division on the line…

  • Anonymous

I fear his knowledge of the playbook that he would bring to our opponents

  • Anonymous

That brings up a good question, will Tebow become a captain now?

  • Anonymous

There’s so many players that play their former teams each year, that I’m not worried about it, especially seeing we don’t run many of the plays that Orton “knows”. Besides, teams already know our 4 plays per game. It’s how we execute them, not the other team knowing the plays that we need to worry about.

  • Anonymous

Team will vote on it…. But Probably

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Agreed. Not concerned about the playbook. More concerned about the upgrade at QB we’ve give Chiefs/Bears.

  • Anonymous

And that should make us fear Orton how?
We’ll win the Bears and Chiefs game regardless of if it’s Orton playing or the backups. I will give you that Orton is better than those 2 QBs, but there is still no reason to think he’s such an improvement that those teams would pose much of a threat to us because of him.

  • King

Nah.  The earlier trade dead line got us this year.  It’s better to put him on waivers and get him off the payroll early.

Orton folds when the game is on the line.  He is literally a stop-gap for a team in transition.

  • King

I agree.  Don’t be surprised to see him announced as a Chef in the coming days.

  • Anonymous

It’s an upgrade, but not enough of an upgrade to make a difference to our Defense…. at least I HOPE not.

  • King

Von Doom would have a field day with Orton.

  • King

I think it would be very smart for the Chefs to pick him up after seeing Palko last night.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

Yes but will Hanie run away faster?

  • Anonymous

The trade deadline was exactly the same this year as it has been in the past.

East is right.  They bungled this.

  • Anonymous

I am glad Orton is gone! But why does any one think Chicago would even want Orton back? I think they had enough of him the first time around lmao!!!

  • Anonymous

Why is it a fact that he is better than Hanie?  Hanie came into the NFC Championship last year and actually got the team back into the game.  Sure he had a couple of costly picks but he also made a number of terrific throws.  I agree that Orton is better than Palko but think it is more opinion than fact that he is better than Hanie.

  • Dante Pakistan

Chicago will crush us, with or without Orton. This gimmick offense will not work much longer, they never do. Look at Miami’s wildcat, that last what, half a season? And defense actually had to respect Ronnie Brown as a passer, unlike with Tebow. Teams will figure this out sooner than later, and these past couple wins set us back at least 2-3 years, as it put us out of range of getting any of the top QBs in the draft.

  • Anonymous

How is this a sad showing for the FO?  There were literally no teams other than Miami that expressed any interest in Orton.  The one deal we did have on the table was killed because Orton wouldn’t agree to the extension.  Would trading him for a 6th round pick before the season really have made that much difference?

  • Dante Pakistan

Didn’t Webber out perform Tebow in camp?

  • King

Orton bungled it.  He wanted too much money just after the lock-out and the only ones interested (Dolphins) withdrew their offer.

    Cause and effect.

  • King

You can’t compare Miami’s wildcat play with our offense.  Apples and oranges when you have a QB like Tebow that can take hits.

  • Anonymous

Seriously?  You think Orton is going to go to KC and beat Chi, NYJ, GB and Oak in their 4 games before the Broncos?!?!  That’s just crazy talk.

  • King

I agree.  Orton and our FO should be happy with the result.

  • Dante Pakistan

I wonder many of these “Broncos” fans will be fans when Tebow isn’t the starter anymore or gets traded or released?

  • Dante Pakistan

We still have two QBs that are better.

  • johnny

No, that was Horton & Quinn. Two super friggin stars don’t ya know…

  • Tom9798

Another milk-toast comment.  You are not a Bronco fan.

Get on the bus . . . go on back to KC.
