Tim Tebow

A vote of confidence can often be the virtual death sentence for a struggling coach or quarterback in the NFL. If the person in charge has to use words to emphasize what isn’t clear on the field, someone is in trouble.

This is not one of those cases.

The Denver Broncos have found their quarterback of the future, and his name is Tim Tebow. Just ask Pat Bowlen.

From a phenomenal piece by Ian O’Connor on ESPNNewYork.com:

As Elway all but sprinted through the winning locker room, his chest bursting through his suit jacket, he said, “Just give him a chance to win the game.” Asked what it was like to watch Tebow perform an endgame act he himself had mastered, Elway said, “It was great. Awesome.”

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen was heading for a different exit door when he stopped long enough to declare that Tebow would be his man for many moons to come.

“He’s a quarterback, and believe me he’s going to learn,” Bowlen said. “I believe he’ll be a great one. Better keep him around.”

Just like that, the direction in which this franchise is moving is clear. The Broncos will rise or fall with Tebow. They will put up with 55 minutes of terrible stat lines and erratic passes now to capitalize on the magic he produces in a game’s final minutes. They believe those 55 terrible minutes won’t always be part of the equation; they believe that Tim Tebow will get better. They will let him learn, they will mold an offense to his strengths, and they believe he will flourish.

Last night was a pivotal moment for this franchise. If Tebow’s 95-yard comeback truly changed the course of Broncos history, it is indeed worthy of Broncos lore. We just witnessed The Drive 2. The Experiment is over. The Investment has begun.

The Broncos of today are different from the Broncos of yesterday.

    Go Broncos.

    Music to my ears!
Know what the Broncos can afford less than winning or losing ugly games with Tebow? It’s to have him go to a different team and turn into Steve Young! If we let Tebow go and he turns into the QB that so many hope he can turn into, there will be a decade of mistrust and 2nd guessing every move even the legendary and loved Elway makes.

Nah, they’re still drafting a QB in the first round.

  • Theprairieprankster

A great victory. The Broncos defense is more responsible for winning the games than Tebow is. A successful offense in the long term has to do better consistently over 4 quarters, not just for 5 minutes at the end of the game. When Tebow gets hurt, not if, who will run an offense tailored to Tebow’s skills? I like that we are winning and Tebow is a great story, but if Tebow is hit as often as running backs are hit over the course of the season, why do we think his career won’t be as short as most running backs? There are many qbs who are over 30, still can throw and still win. Other than a few rbs, McGahee and Tomlinson, most rbs peak around 24 and are toast by age 30. My concern is that once Tebow goes down, the Broncos will not have the backup depth to keep running an offense tailored for Tebow. Which is why I am not yet convinced Tebow is the long term answer. But I will enjoy this ride for the rest of the season.

    Haters gonna hate.

And your boy Luck doesn’t look too good against teams like the Ducks.  If he played against the speed demons in the SEC, he’d be toast.  Luck will struggle in the NFL.  Wait and see.

  • Anonymous

    Disciples gonna disciple.

It’s not about Andrew Luck.  We waved bye-bye to Andrew Luck when we beat Miami.  It’s senseless to bring him up in this discussion.

  • King

Most QB’s are injured in the pocket (Brady, Ben, Palmer, etc).  Heck, I even thought Miller was going to knock Sanchez out of last nights game.

I would like to see Tebow slide more, but he is pretty smart about when to gain yards, and when to run out of bounds.  That play last night where Revis sidestepped Tebow was priceless.  Revis was about to get trucked, and he knew it!  lmao

  • Anonymous

When Tebow gets an off season, when he gets time with his receivers to develop chemistry and anticipation, if he gets the completion rate around 55% then he will be a force.  Until then, thank you Defense you guys were heroes for 60 minutes, not just the last 5.

  • Anonymous

When Manning, Brady, Breese, Rodgers, etc… get’s hit and injured, who are they gonna have to run their “traditional” style offense? My goodness, can’t anyone see the hypocrisy? No matter what style of offense you play, if your STARTER goes out, the offense will struggle, almost without exception.

Tebow and the running attack (albeit too much running I think) is one of the reasons why our Defense looks so good. Before you rip my head off, let me briefly explain.

Our Defense has been HORRIBLE for the last 3 years… HORRIBLE. I’m talking all time NFL horrible. Why? I mean, they usually start the year decent, or each game decent, yet for some strange reason, they seem to just suck after a little bit… Why?

I’ll tell you why, it’s because they are TIRED. I know, that’s a novel concept, isn’t it? I mean, these guys are paid millions, so they should be like robots and never slow down or get tired. Well, guess what? They are still humans. If we turn the ball over or go 3 and out repeatedly and quickly, the defense will wear out and give up plays. Yes, I know we went 3 and out during this game, but it was a sssslllllloooooowwwww 3 and out. With people like Cutler, Orton, etc, they were very fast 3 and outs to which our Defense literally walked off the field and back on the field in less than a minute. I’m not talking about game time minutes, I’m talking about take a stopwatch and time them, minute.

When our D is rested, they can stay strong all game, as has been evident from game 5 onwards. Another reason why they might be getting better is hope and belief in our team. Remember, hope can be everything sometimes.

The 3rd reason why our D is better is simply because they are getting time to grow… Imagine that, giving someone/a group time to GROW. What if people gave Tebow time to grow? What if people gave our offense time to grow? I mean, they are giving our defense time to grow, but not our offense? That makes no sense. If you watch the Miami game and the Jets game, the difference in Tebow is night and day, and that isn’t even taking into effect that the Jets are vastly superior to Miami. If Tebow looks light years better against the Jets, he’d probably put up 40 if he played the Dolphins next week.

The problem with Tebow isn’t mechanics, isn’t an inability to throw the ball, or being unable to read a defense and progress through reads, it’s simply timing with his offense. Remember, he wasn’t given any #1 reps in camp or preseason. A QB’s timing with his WR, RB, TE and OL (especially center) take time. That’s why there is training camp and preseason games. If timing and chemistry didn’t play a significant part in this game, there would be no preseason, and there wouldn’t be training camp, cause, hey, they had a playbook all summer, so they should be able to go out and execute from day 1, right?

I swear, they idiocy from some people is suffocating. You make my 5 year old girl look like she’s forgotten more about football than you’ll ever know!

  • flbronc

Herc- i think we’re drafting a qb too, but now i am not sold on it being in the first.  if the draft were held today, the ‘big 3’ qb’s are going to be gone by the time we pick.  if we have a mid first round pick, i cant see us spending the picks to move up in to the top 5 to get one of those guys- it’s just too expensive.  i look for us to get a mid-teir prospect in the second or third round.

  • flbronc

the defense was the hero in the last :58.  defenses of the last couple of years had the potential to fold like a lawn chair in that position.

  • Anonymous

Man I totally agree. Any other year they are scoring, we just could not stop a team when it was clutch.

He’s had an off season and he worked with Lloyd.  His timing and accuracy are off and his release is too slow.

    haters will never stop.

they will always adjust their argument to fit their Tebow criticism. First they said he couldnt run in the nfl, then they said ok he can run fine but he cant win, now they say he can win, but he cant get to the playoffs, now he can get to the playoffs, but he will never win a superbowl, or hes gonna hurt ect ect ect…. it never stops. Critics will be critics. all Tebow does is win.

It absolutely amazes me that “Broncos fans” feel like having Tebow on their team is a burden. Tebow is special. We will look back on this heavy criticism one day and laugh. Doubting Tebow is a mistake youre all making.

wow, you show how little you know about football. Hold on, I’m gonna go as my door knob if Tebow had a full offseason……
Hmm.. It didn’t answer me back, and yet it was still way more intelligent than your answer!

  • Theprairieprankster

You make some very good points, BP, I am not sure why you think I know less than a 5 yr old girl. Kinda cheap since I don’t think I said anything idiotic. I expressed a legitimate concern. There are more people who can run a traditional offense than there are that can run an offense tailored for one guy. You make a lot of sense about the running game and keeping the defense fresh – but when you call me an idiot then all I can say is you FAILED.

Seriously I was just waiting for a pass interference call on that final play.

  • Anonymous

I think Tebow took fewer shots last night than Sanchez did standing in the pocket.  I would say the same for Cassel and Palmer as well.  All I know is if I were a QB and saw Von Miller on the other side of the ball I would be shitting myself.

  • Padenerik

“Asked what it was like to watch Tebow perform an endgame act he himself had mastered, Elway said, “It was great. Awesome.”  I think Elway is lying.  His face after Tebow scored the winning touchdown said everything.  He looked completely pissed off.  On another topic, the coaches need to let Tebow throw more during the games so he can get into a rhythm and start to understand his receivers better.  I don’t see how he can get better if he is not allowed to throw more.

  • Naelson88

Who is his QB coach? Im not very knowledgable, but have been watching broncos religiously the last 3 seasons… I remember watching cutler fail miserably, and then once he got a new QB coach, 2 of them if i remember correctly (in chicago) somehow turned around completely. I feel that if tebow had some passing ability, he would be unstoppable.

  • Anonymous

Really, he had OTA’s, time with the coaches, his line, all the receivers? You know I have been neutral on Tebow, in large part because he did not get the off season a young QB that needs development should get. He also did not get the practice snaps needed in the first five games, so I strongly disagree that he “had an offseason”. Totally agree with his timing and accuracy problems. Last night I found myself counting the drop back steps and yelling throw it! Only the Tebowites think that he is truly ready right now, as for myself I feel he should have been a late second/mid third round pick so I will give him the development time based on that. The team is winning which I enjoy.

So because he worked with a receiver that is no longer on the team and they worked out on their own without their coaches that counts as a full off-season and proves why he can’t be a good QB?  Strange logic.

  • Anonymous

I have to say that last night was probably one of Decker’s worst games as a Bronco.  I love the guy but he had two passes right in his hands and dropped them both.  They both would have set-up short 3rd downs and possibly kept the drives alive.  I’m also a little confused why Thomas only got one more target after his catch to open the game.  He’s a beast and I think we need to throw a couple of jump balls his way to see if he can go up and get them.

  • Anonymous

I thought we were toast after they picked up that 4th and 19.

  • King

lol.  I think Sanchez didn’t realize how tough of a game he was going to have.  Miller is something to watch!

  • King

What are you smoking?  I guess I was having a nightmare and we didn’t really have a lock-out!  lmao

  • King

Elway looked pissed after that touchdown when the camera went back to him a second time.

  • Anonymous

I absolutely LOVED it when Miller just imposed his will on the Jets lineman for that final sack on Sanchez.  I almost felt bad for the guy because he was so outmatched.

  • anthony33

Wow… I saw shot of Elway too and didn’t come close to that conclusion.  I simply read what most of us were thinking, which was “did that just really happen” or shaking his head as in “wow”

Not sure what you expected him to do.  Certainly did not see him as pissed off.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

Tebow needs a full summer working out with John Elway and his quarterback coach (not McNumbnutts) to work on throwing mechanics, velocity control, and accuracy.

The lock out took Elway out of the picture this year in terms of working with quarterbacks.

Heed this:  Tebow can only get better.  Period.  At 4-1 and all this excitment… I’d love to see what better is.

John Elway + Tim Tebow + Summer + Quarterback Camp = WINNING

So can we get back to drafting a cornerback at 32 now?

This is what I love about BroncoTalk:

There is an honest exchange of opinion between legitimate Bronco fans, and, for the most part, it is done without becoming overly personal or disparaging and keeping the “rah rah” at a minimum.  There are a host of bloggers whose posts I eagerly await.  (You know who you are! happy face)

Examples:  The exchange between Big Pete and Theprairieprankster exemplifies an honest difference of opinion on Tebow.  Let’s face it.  There is plenty of fodder for both camps.  Pro and con.

(I don’t speak for Big Pete, but based on his history or rational dialogue, I don’t think his comments about his daughter were directed at the prankster specifically, but to the many Tebow-bashers, in general.)

I will go on the record on Monty’s current story by saying that it is a significant post and a very important stance for an owner to make public…

… and YES, Tebow still has issues… and a lot yet to learn… but so far, how to WIN doesn’t appear to be one of them!

    Rock on BroncoTalk… and “Talkers”!

  • Anonymous

I said they, not you, lol. They meaning those who blindly proclaim that he’ll never make it and that he sucks without saying he needs a bigger body of work before such assessments can be made. If you fall into that category, then yes, you’re a moron, but if you don’t (and you sound like you’re taking the wait and see approach), then you aren’t part of the group I am talking about. I can see how its easy to assume I was saying you are an idiot, but I wasn’t (Or was I? Only you will ultimately make that decision) :)

I don’t care who we pick if we are picking 32 without it being because we traded back!

  • Lookn4H2O

At what point is Tebow gonna good enough for you to admit he is the QB of the future? Is it when we win the division this year or does he have to win the super bowl?

  • Anonymous

    Off topic, sorry:
Maybe it’s a side effect of (1) VonDoom’s impact on the line in general, or (2) my really, really low expectations of them to start with, but: did anyone else come away really impressed with the improving play of our DTs last night?  Seems like they’re working by committee, but really getting it done better than any other season in recent memory.  Or am I off base here?

  • Anonymous

“and, for the most part, it is done without becoming overly personal or disparaging”

Yeah, will you don’t know jack $|-|17

haha j/k you know I love you!!!

The offense should have had no problem hanging 40+ on the Jets last night. Both teams looked great defensively, offensively not so much.

The final drive Tebow accounted for 92 of the 95 yards. Thats fantastic. Without a doubt, legendary-esqe drive. Awesome to watch. But where was the OFFENSE, not just Tebow but the whole offensive unit the rest of the game?

5 of the 12 offensive drives started in Jet territory, totaling 15 yards of offense in 22 plays which includes 1 FG and 4 punts. 3 points and we’re starting from the oppositions side of the field for almost half of the game we average less than 1 yard per play and 3 points..are you kidding me?

Maybe they should have put the 5 year old in?

  • Anonymous

And like someone said earlier, Tebow will only get better with time. I mean, as QBs get more work with their fellow starters, it’s damn near impossible to regress. If we are winning right now, just imagine how bright the future could be with Tebow passing better?

I’ve said time and time again, remember 2 seasons ago when Peyton Manning had that knee fluid issue and he missed all of training camp and all of the preseason? Remember that he still had 10 years in the offense that he was the coordinator for, with the same line he’s had for years, and at least 2 recievers (wayne and clark) that he’s had for years. Remember how out of sync he looked weeks 1-4? Manning looked like Tebow has looked for those first 4 or so games, and Manning is a HALL OF FAME QB!!! I mean, for heavens sake, if a surefire hall of fame QB and possibly the best passer the NFL has ever seen takes 4+ weeks to get his timing back with players he’s played with for years, then just think about how long of a leash Tebow should be afforded.

Tebow didn’t have an offseason to work with the WRs, the TEs, the RBs or the Oline. He didn’t have coaches nit picking every move he made to help him play better, and when camp started, Orton took 90+% of the 1st team reps, with Tebow and Quinn taking the leftovers. Then when preseason started, again, Tebow got no 1st team reps.

Before we knew it, the regular season started, and Tebow again got zero 1st team reps. Zero! Then, he is declared the starter. Well, from that moment on, you need to say “ok, this week’s practice is mini-camp #1. Next week’s practice is mini-camp #2, next week’s practice is Training Camp week 1, then week 2, 3, 4, then preseason wk 1, 2, 3, 4… Where does that put us with him? That puts us 10 games in (we’re 5 games in currently) before we should even think about saying “This is what Tebow should look like week 1 of this season.” And remember, at week 1 of the season, you will now be faced with the “1st year starter’s learning curve.”

All I’m asking is for perspective. A lot of people want instant “Elway in 1998” results. Well, that is just never going to happen with any rookie…. ever!
Like him or hate him, Skip Bayless threw up the stats of Elway’s first 8 starts vs Tebows first 8 starts (which doesn’t include his stats from games he ran thw “tebow package” or Charger’s game) to make his point about Tebow being the most criticized QB in the history of the league.
    Elway: 3-5                Tebow: 5-3
Elway: 1,041 yds       Tebow: 1,289 yds
    Elway: 3/10 TD/INT   Tebow: 10/4
Elway 92 Rush yds   Tebow: 550
Elway 1 Rush TD       Tebow: 5

Again, I’m not saying Tebow is Elway. I’m not saying Tebow is Young. All I’m saying is that Tebow needs TIME. I know that in this media frenzy day and age, time isn’t a luxury that most people have. It kinda makes me shudder to think that if this media had been around in 1983, would Elway have ever had a chance to develop as a QB and eventually become in my opinion the best QB ever? Remember, Elway wasn’t “Elway” until he had a body of work to look back on.

Can Tebow flame out of this league? Of course he can, anybody can. There is no guarantee that he’ll ever become a great QB, but I don’t think anyone should ever say with any amount of conviction or certainty that after just 8 games, he can’t play or can’t be a QB, or just cant (insert any knock here). Eight games isn’t enough to say anything about any QB. I think Tebow needs work, Tebow thinks he needs work, everyone thinks Tebow needs work. The only thing that anyone should ask for is that Tebow be given the time to do that work. Would I take Cam Newton over Tebow? HELL NO. Not because I’m a Tebow lover (I hated that we drafted him… HATED IT!!!), but because I have almost no doubts that if Newton was our QB from week 1, we’d be 2-8 at best, and that would mean he got all training camp and preseason with the 1st team.

ALl I know is that this team was 1-4 and looking like it couldn’t wait for the season to be over, and then with nothing else changing but us inserting Tebow (and getting rid of our best WR who if he was on this team, would catch all the balls that all our WRs keep dropping, thus giving Tebow probably a 70% completion rate), and all of a sudden, we are 4-1 (5-5 overall). Same team, same players, same defense, same EVERYTHING (minus our stud WR Lloyd), yet somehow our team is light years better and looking like they can’t wait to host a playoff game! There is just something about this guy that lifts a team.

Does Andrew Luck have that ability? Does Barkley or Jones? I can’t answer that, because only time will tell, but I can say with 100% certainty that they’d be given the chance! From where I sit, this team looks like it has a fighting chance to beat almost anybody. Six weeks ago, this team looked like it would get the #1 overall pick, now, it looks like we could win our division. Because of that, how or why would any fan not want to give this QB time to develop? If he does this for our team right now, being as raw as he is, just imagine how great things will be around here when he finally does develop, and we draft players to make this team even stronger!!!

Remember, each time the experts in this league said that things would ruin the game (forward pass), or never make it because only college teams did it that way (Zone blocking scheme), they were always proven wrong if what they were talking about was given a chance. Our Tebow led offense is again causing experts to make bold claims such as those they made about our very team when Shanahan decided to go completely against the NFL norm and put all his chips on the table with the zone blocking scheme.

If Shanahan didn’t go all in, it never would have worked, and our trophy room wouldn’t have 2 Super Bowl trophies in it. My point is that you have to draft and tailor your offense around the offense you are running. If you don’t, then you aren’t giving it a shot to work. Shanahan knew this with the zone blocking, even though they gave up 50+ pounds to defensive linemen who were suppose to just completely dominate our line. People need to remember that “experts” are deathly afraid of things they haven’t seen before. Why? Because it can make everybody look really foolish if it works against them. We saw it with the forward pass, we saw it with the collapsing pocket, we saw it with the west coast offense, we saw it with the zone blocking, and now we are seeing it with this Tebow offense. Each one of those was suppose to only work for a few games before it went away…. Each one has been copycatted because it had proved to be effective. I HOPE that we are on the front of the curve with Tebow, just like we were with the zone blocking scheme, because if we are, just like with our late 90’s team, we will dominate because no other team can prepare for us because no other team is brave enough to do what we do!
    GO BRONCOS!!!

    haha.
If I remember off the top of my head, most of the time we went 3 straight runs (no Tebow runs mind you). That’s good for keeping our D off the field, but we really needed to open it up a little bit more in order to capitalize on those opportunities. I think as Tebow progresses, our offense will get more and more aggressive, especially in situations like that.

Well said by Monty.  It looks like Bowlen/Fox/Elway are on board.  I think it’s awesome. I think they realize they have something special in Tebow. Should be fun to watch. Exciting to be a Broncos fan again.

Come on let’s not get carried away with Tebow. He has not shown he can throw a dependable ball. Sorry but that is what being a quarterback is all about. Is he going to get a lot better throwing the ball–hopefully, but he has been slinging the pigskin for awhile so…???
Is he hard-wired by now to play the way he does and can he be successful for an entire season let alone a career?  Can we possibly be a 10-12 win team on annual basis without a reliable passing game?
The sample is too small right now to make a final determination.

I can’t believe people are acting like last night was some big turning point in Tebow’s development.  It’s nonsense.

Nothing has changed.  The kid still can’t throw worth a crap.  And what’s more damning is that the coaching staff isn’t even really letting him try.  They don’t seem interested in developing that part of his game.

That’s why they’re drafting a QB in the first round.  Do you seriously think that one of, if not the greatest QB’s in the history of the league is going to be ok w/ running the option for the next decade?  Please.
