Tim Tebow

Quarterback Tim Tebow #15 of the Denver Broncos walks off the field after a game against the Detroit Lions at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on October 30, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. The Lions defeated the Broncos 45-10. (Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

There is a growing notion among a subset of Denver Broncos fans that is requiring my attention. It’s a notion being spread by conspiracy theorists and Tim Tebow die-hards. This notion — this ridiculous, preposterous idea — is that John Fox and John Elway are either:

  • purposefully sabotaging Tim Tebow’s  success in a spiteful display of pride and desire for Andrew Luck OR
  • too uneducated and untalented to figure out a way to use Tim Tebow to his full potential.

Earth to the conspiracy theorists: maybe Tim Tebow just isn’t very good.

When you’re producing an other-wordly bad -109.4% DVOA in your first three quarters and a still-below average -1.8% in the fourth quarter, there’s not a lot your coaching staff can do to make better of this. But there’s evidence that Fox and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy are trying.

The Broncos have been trying to play to Tebow’s strengths. They have been lining up predominantly out of the shotgun and utilizing a spread offense in parts of Sunday’s game. They “revamped” their offense in one week, according to reports on Sunday, to bend to Tebow’s college style.

The critics say that, against Miami, the Broncos were too conservative. They clipped his playbook, and his wings, after a few bad plays, and he finally “broke free” in the fourth quarter when he could run the show.

The same critics say that, against Detroit, the Broncos were too aggressive. They didn’t give him enough time to warm up and get comfortable with some easy passes. They altered their formation after the first drive, and the offense stumbled.

Both argument have a facet of truth to them. But they hardly tell the whole tale. The Broncos are still trying to succeed with Tebow. If that wasn’t the case, he wouldn’t be starting this week.

Don’t blame John Fox for Tebow’s inaccurate throw in the red zone that was intercepted and returned 100 yards for a touchdown. Don’t blame John Elway for Tebow’s repeated tendency to look away from his receivers, dart his eyes at the pressure around him, and still manage to get sacked 13 times in two games.

Blame Tebow, and hope he gets better.

  • DB

Very good points in this post, and Tebow has looked terrible over his first couple of starts.  That said, the same people who didn’t want to give Tebow credit for the Miami win (because he doesn’t kick field goals, recover onside kicks, or play defense) are giving Tebow ALL of the blame for a 35-point loss.  I don’t care if you put Zac Efron at tight end, individuals do not lose NFL games by 35 points.  John Fox is not to blame for Tebow’s atrocious play, but can you name even one thing about the Fox regime that you LIKE?  If I was in a coma for the last 12 months and woke up in time for this game, I would have sworn that McDaniels was still coaching the team.  They looked unprepared, undisciplined, and unintelligent on both sides of the ball, and inevitably quit at the end.  Sadly, it’s become the same old story.

  • Turkduckin

Dude, thats great he is a good guy, but I am thinking you don’t really have a clue what is going on when u watch football. First: the team that scores the most points is the team that wins. Second: passes completed to the other team do not count as completed passes. Third: a quater backs job is to throw the football. 4th: an NFL qb cannot miss wide open reciever by 100 yards. 5th: ;your an idiot. There i said. You sir are one of the Tebow cool aid drinkers, your football IQ is less than a jar of mayonnaise.

  • SoCalBronco7

a quater backs? reciever? 100 yards? There i said? Tebow cool aid?
    What is a turkduckin?

  • plato68

To all you Tebow fans, ask and you shall receive. You asked for him now you have him. I hope your happy.

  • rcsodak

Why? There currently are 2nd rd rookie qb’s with no offseason and very little training camp doing better than he has. Lets not forget that he had all of last summer and TC and 17wks of either watching and/or playing.

Looks to me like he regressed from his stellar 50% completion rate.

  • SoCalBronco7

Most of us believe it or not are Bronco fans before all. Something more intelligent would be appropriate from someone with plato as a screen name.

  • rcsodak

So after another blowout loss to Oak, anf TT’s QB numbers hovering around the Mendoza line, anybody think TT’s nutclingers will finally have a reality alert?

  • SoCalBronco7

You must know very well what a nutclinger is from years of experience. Since you can predict the outcome of games can you give me the Mega million numbers? Then again please don’t. Keep your daytime job because you are not funny.

  • rcsodak

Not meant to be funny.  But glad you admitted your ‘clinging’ fetish.

The only person sabotaging Tebow is Tebow.  He is the one who holds the ball to long, can’t complete passes, and has failed to lead his team.

For a guy that is supposed to have the best “intangibles” ever, I saw a lot of uninspired players wearing Bronco uniforms on Sunday.  No matter though, Tebowites never let a lost argument weigh them down, they just conjure up new ones.  Bring on Landry Jones.

I completely agree with whoever that guest is up top.  Tebow could still be considered a rookie. The head coach who wanted him and had a plan in mind for him is gone, he never had an offseason or OTA’s or and kind of training camp leading into his second year, and he came from a college style system in florida that didnt feature a lot of unique passing schemes.

If Mcd would have stayed I’m pretty sure most of you would agree that he would have had Tebow sittin the pine for at least his first 3 years so that he can work on his timing and accuracy issues. They ousted him and now they have this talented, raw “QB” on there hands that they didnt want in the first place.

I dont think Elway doesnt think he can be a “true” QB, I just think that Elway doesnt want to take the time it would realisticly take to develop Tebow into a total package QB. Lets face it: now a days QB’s come fresh from the draft ready to go in at least their first 2 seasons, and most of the 1st rounders came from a pro style offences in college.  It isnt like it used to be back in the day when every QB that came out automaticly had to learn up a system for at least 3 years before he took the field on game day. Theres a lot more pro style offences and former NFL coaches in college now. So for a QB like Tebow its hard for them to get aclimated as quikly as the coaching staff wants them to.

If John Elway and John Fox did what they originally said they were going to do and play Orton through the season(I know how horrible it is to hear) and sit Tebow and let him learn for a few more seasons(2 or 3), coupled with throwing whatever playbook they have out and starting over and not just “revamping the offence in a week” and completely gearing THE WHOLE PLAYBOOK towards what Tebow does well, then they could make tebow into a competitor and a FOR REAL QB in this league. This would include drafting offencive players that compliment they way tebow can throw the ball and fortifying the offencive line so that they can be more agile and block ALL DAY LONG. This would also include beefing up the DT’s to stop the run and Drafting Shut down corners and developing defences that keep the offence in the game.  There is A WHOLE LOT Denver would have to do as an organization to make tebow successful in this league.

The question is: are they willing to take it to that point? Is John Elway commited to Tebow that much to center the whole team around him? And judgeing from the way they’ve started the Tebow era, I highly dout it.  They’ve thrown him into the fire WAY early with a serious lack of talent around him for him to succeed.  I want them to do the things neccessary for Tebow to be a superbowl winning QB because no one can deny that Tebow has the heart and work ethic to pull it off, but I just don’t think Elway has the patience to follow through, judging from the moves they’ve already made with him.

That being said, bronco fans have to realisticly think about what it means to say “suck for Luck.”  First and formost your completely ignoring the problems on the defencive side of the ball as well as the offencive line when you make a statement like that.  Lets say the broncos dont see anything in Tebow that would persuade them to keep him past this year at least at the QB postion.  That would mean they would trade up to 2 of their QB’s for draft pick and that would probably equal out at best to 2 5th rounders or a 4th and a 5th.  at this point in the season the broncos already have a good enough record to not have the 1st overall pick but they would probably have a top 5 pick. What some of you are saying is that the broncos, knowing they have such glaring needs at DT,DE, and DB, should waste their highest pick on a QB on the assumption that he will ultimately take denver to the superbowl quicker then if they waited a couple of years, even though there is a very real chance that it would take Denver just as long to become competitive even if they draft Luck.

Even if they decide Tebow isnt their man after this season they will probably take those draft picks and draft defencive players and either use Tebow or another veteran in the meantime until they develop the rest of their team. Von Miller was the 2nd pick overall and he has had an immediate impact. With a top 5 pick in next years draft, they can get another defencive player that will make another immediate impact. There is a good QB that comes out every draft(actually there are a couple).  Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez, Cam Newton, and Jat Cutler are all QB’s that have come out of colleges in the last 5 years that have really made a difference and are all very capable of taking a team to the playoffs and beyond. Why rush things when they can really take their time and build a great team from the ground up. I’d rather see them build a dynasty then a team the scratches the surface of the playoffs every year with on good QB and a whole team of average players. Think about the future bronco fans!

You need some education regarding your English. It is not “your happy” but “you’re happy” i.e. “you are happy”.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VUN6IQF4ACWGK4Q7ULEYKAK2OI George

Everything is still down to McDaniels. When he got rid of Cutler, whose Bronco’s record is better than Elway’s at the same stage of development, he got rid of somebody who could have become the Bronco’s best ever QB. Unfortunately I don’t think Tebow comes close to Cutler’s ability and the difference between Cutler’s performance against Detroit and Tebow’s is immense.

At this stage all we can do is support Elway and Fox and their decisions and not second guess them. They must have a plan to build the team in the right way and this will take time. There will be more games like last week but I do think that the lock out has effected the Broncos more adversely than any other team. I commend Tebow for taking on what is an extremely difficult if not impossible mission this year. I would not only give him the rest of this year but also next year to learn what is needed and in the meantime build a team and draft a QB that both Elway and Fox think will succeed if Tebow doesn’t.

The rebuilding of the Broncos is a work in progress and all I want to know is how long Elway thinks this will take.

Your grandpa and you are both wrong the nuts don’t fall fare from the tree. What the hell does that got to do with football. When does tebow get all the blame the defence sucks plain and simple. If the defence could stop the lions we would have won the game.

  • flbronc

except that, as someone pointed out earlier in this post or another, even if the defense pitches a shut out we still lose 14-3.  to jog your memory, there was a tebow fumble returned for a td as well as a 100+ yard pick six.

if you want to stand behind tebow, that’s cool.  i still want to see him play and see him succeed.  just don’t make totally outlandish statements that are flat out false.

  • Padenerik

Yes, Tebow was awful against the Lions, but can we really put all the blame on him?  The running game without McGahee is non-existent, the offensive line stinks, and he has one receiver to throw to.  He did make some terrible throws and decisions and that is expected with a rookie quarterback.  And I’m not saying he is being sabotaged by the coaching staff, but I am starting to wonder a little bit after LLoyd was traded right away and how the offensive game plan changed against the Lions once our first drive went so well.

That only works if Xanders had any actual input.  Everybody should know how McDaniels had multiple orgasms whenever you put Tebow and Broncos together.  I would say this last draft was a better indicator of Xanders than the 2 previous drafts with McD.

I would like to see Tebow finsh the season I think that with his work ethic we will see improvement every week. The Lions are a much better team than we are. But we are improving.

  • Missrinn

It seems to me that Tebow is extremely over rated and i do believe that most of his so called “fans” are not really football fans. Love this article!!

  • Billls07

Who do we blame for the running game sucking? who do we blame for the pass rush sucking? who do we blame for the poor tackling? who do we blame for the poor  pass coverage? who do we blame for the missed  field goals?  When do we hold someone besides Tebow  accountable for the team sucking in all areas of the game. When Josh was the coach everthing was his fault now that he is gone everthing is tebows fault. When  does  the new coach  take  some blame and what kind of coach lets his players catch all the shit like he has done to tebow? sounds like to me we dont want to admit that we hired a shitty coach and put John (the horse mouth) Elway in a job they cant handle.Good teams  take up for there players good or bad and of all people that should know that Elway should.

  • Sandraghopkins

Tebow deserves a chance. Orton did not win many games in the last two years. He is suppose to have alot of experience, right? Maybe the rest of this team needs to take a long hard look at itself.

  • Gregg Huestis

Unfortunately, I have to agree with 100%. I am a huge Tim Tebow supporter, that being said, he has not been getting the job done as I had hoped. We won in Miami…but it was still an UGLY win…and against one of the worst teams in the NFL (-the Broncos).

I’m a huge support of Tebow’s faith, I, too, am a born-again Christian, but he needs to get more comfortable on the field in the NFL. 7 sacks per the last two games each, I believe? That’s not acceptable playing. Yes, the offensive line needs to step up and protect him better, but he in turn needs to throw more accurate too, among other things.

Love you Tim, but you have got to get things together and play like I know you can or else you will not be our starting QB or anyone else’s!

I think that , realistically , Tebow should be used as a FB or TE . Regardless of “sabatoge” theories , lack of OTA’s , pre-season , et al , the bottom line is that opposing teams see, correctly ,his effectiveness plumments when forced to pass . Until he PROVES that he can beat them w/ a pass , they’re going to stack the  box. Three and out will be the norm.
People moan about the defense , but they are on the field WAY too much, eventually , they are going give up the big play .
That said, I agree with you about Tebow . He has size, desire , and many different intangibles , that could lead him to a stellar career , but not at the QB spot. If his passing does improve – he could be a threat by either running or throwing , after a hand off from the qb. I have no issue with his being on the team….just move him to a different spot.

  • Mr. Bill42

First Tebow has played 5 games. How GOOD would you be if you only played 5 games and had a handful of pratice snaps? Fox and his staff should be fired and bring in a coach that can perform. FOX has a 50 – 50 record in the win lose column. Who calls a run up center when you are playing the LIONS?? We have NO protection for Tebow when he gets sacked 7 times. The receivers are dropping the ball. The field gold kicker missed the first two 3 pointers. WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE EXPECT? TEOBOW CAN NOT CARRY THE TEAM BY HIMSELF. I have been a BRONCO fan before you ever heard of MR. ELWAY… William Tracy Georgetown, DE#.

  • Keating47

How many did you give Orton

  • Keating47

have you lost your mine. Tebow was and still is one of the greatest college QB in history

  • Anonymous

Uh, no.  Just because he was successful in a SPREAD offense, where he had stellar WR’s and RB’s, doesn’t make him the overall NCAA GOAT.  I for one do not have “Tebow blinders” on.  He is not a QB of our franchise, period.

  • Anonymous

Then you are not watching the same game, nor the same QB that cannot throw a pass to save his life.  Tebow is a horrid QB, and belongs in a college-based offense.  He may eventually prove us skeptics wrong, but I won’t bet on it nor hold my breath.  Let the sweepstakes for Luck begin.

  • Spirrigold21

Andy Dalton has AJ Green. Who the heck does Tim Tebow have? Decker? Royal? Come one, they’re about as good a Rams receiver (minus Lloyd)

  • LOLatU

Ok you say don’t blame Fox for Tebow? Ok got ya.. But can I blame Fox for being a career .500 coach.. Can I blame him for going 1-15 last year? Can I blame him for the way the O-line is playing even worse then last year? Can I blame him for drafting Moore and Franklin? Can I blame him for how the offense playcalling is horrible?  Can I blame him for not trading Orton away for a bucket of chicken and a big mac and either give the job to Tebow or Quinn in Training camp and giving them Reps? Can I blame him for not running any damn screens or delayed draws to keep Defenses from destroying our O-line and QB? Can I blame him for horrible coverage on the Defensive side of the ball? Can I blame him for being a smug little arrogant prick who thinks he is great coach?  Huh! Can I?

  • Spirrigold21

Tebow had an all star talented offense, and he was also playing against all-star talented defenses. So that’s not much of an excuse.

  • B Myers

You have my utterly uncontested permission. Fox?….He’s a gopher in disguise. All he does is make holes.

  • Guest

They should try the spread offense. The same people who say it won’t work in the nfl are the people who said it wouldn’t work in college. Newsflash, it won two national championships in the toughest college football conference in the U.S. Tebow did extremely well under that offense, and I believe he will do well in any offense, but… people are expecting Tebow to perform a miracle in an offense he is not used to, on a team that frankly, sucks, under a coach and manager that verbally don’t have any faith in him (and also just traded away his best receiver, but no… they aren’t trying to sabotage him by running him up the middle against the lions, again, and again, and again). Face it guys, Fox doesn’t believe in Tebow, but he can’t get rid of him while the fans love him. He’s walking a tightrope where he has to make it look like he’s trying to give Tebow a chance, and yet make it so he will fail. If I was a coach and felt like Tebow had no shot I’d do the same thing. Of course if I were a coach I’d look at his college record and stfu.

  • sterling

Yes, we should CLEARLY blame Tebow for not doing well, it’s not like he’s on a poorly coached/managed team that just traded away their best receiver, won’t adapt their offense, has crummy defense, and their offensive line allows 7 sacks (and no, it wasn’t because Tebow wasn’t getting the ball off quick enough). Where were the confidence passes that the announcers talked about? Why were there predominately either bombs and runs. If Tebow is so inaccurate, what makes them think he will be more accurate throwing a 60 yard hail mary?

Of course naturally, when a team is falling apart (and the only semblance of unity has come from putting in a new quarterback), you blame the quarterback, NOT the management. Riiiight. Way to label us as “conspiracy theorists” to make us seem crazy. Ya… we’re crazy all right. Anyways, hopefully Denver does trade Tebow, they CLEARLY are mismanaged, and I don’t see them winning any time soon. This is the team that would bring Tebow in for one or two plays a game before, just to run him up the middle. Everyone saw it coming, and it was just a throw away down. We seriously respect a coach and manager who would allow this to happen? Seriously? Earth to Matilda, you’re the crazy one.

  • S_mullet90

Dude you just blamed Tebow for seven sacks. You’re dumb.

  • Guest

I think it’s funny that Elway criticizes Tebow, seeing as he has a career completion average of 55ish% (not much better than Tebow, who is still raw), and a td/int ration of 3/2. I’ll take Tebow’s 6/1 Td/Int ratio over completion ration ANY friggin day. Let’s at least give Tebow time to prove himself, and realize that right now, NOTHING should be blamed on Tebow.

  • guest

It’s so true! I can’t believe he has the cahoney’s to call us “conspiracy theorists” when it is so blatantly obvious! Remember how they were using Tebow when Orton was the starter? I sure as hell do. Hey, let’s bring him in one play a game for a throw away down, and hope he gets injured.
