Kyle Orton

The arguments for starting Tim Tebow have always come from the same angle:

“The Denver Broncos aren’t going to do anything in 2011. Why not start Tebow so the Broncos can see what they have?”

Forgive me for preserving an iota of hope for this season, but I’ve seen enough. The Tim Tebow Experiment is over. Let Kyle Orton, a competent, experienced, albeit inconsistent quarterback, take over again. There is still a nine-game season to salvage.

Not worth it, you say? You’d rather tank the season for Andrew Luck, you say?

The Broncos are seven games in, sitting at 2-5. Team-for-team, the rest of the division is all at 4-3. That’s a two-game deficit with nine games to play.

Are Broncos fans really giving up already? Have we really succumbed to that much malaise?

We’ve given up hope without a quarterback, but we’re going to let Matt Cassel win this division again?!

The Kansas City Chiefs started the season at 0-3. They lost by 37 points to the Buffalo Bills, 45 points to the Detroit Lions (10 more than the deficit by which the Broncos lost last week), and three points to the San Diego Chargers. All hope seemed lost in Missouri, even after winning two close games against winless teams to move to 2-3. Those were hardly impressive victories, considering the opponents.

But the team started believing. They traveled to Oakland and blew out the Raiders 28-0. They followed that up with an impressive, albeit lucky victory against the San Diego Chargers in overtime Monday night. They now have four straight wins, a 4-3 record, and are first place in the AFC West. Don’t tell me a turnaround isn’t possible.

And don’t tell me the Kansas City Chiefs would rather be 2-5 and putting up a fight in the Andrew Luck contest than sitting at 4-3 right now. There isn’t a player or fan who would trade places with a Denver Broncos counterpart right now.

There’s reason to believe, Broncos country. The Broncos actually boast the most impressive win in the division: their Week 2 victory against the 5-2 Cincinnati Bengals is actually the most statistically impressive win of the AFC West this season. Only the Raiders can claim a similar victory, their Week 2 win against the 5-3 Houston Texans, and Denver’s is still better.

Three of the Broncos’ five losses came by a mere three points. Take out blowouts from the Green Bay Packers and Lions — two of the best teams in the NFL so far this year — and the season doesn’t look so lost.

But they won’t go far this season with Tebow.

Starting Tim Tebow is like raising a white flag on the season. Broncos’ opponents admit that they are daring our quarterback to “be a quarterback.”

Did you read comments from Broncos’ opponents last Sunday? John Fox and John Elway are going to lose this locker room quickly, for 2011 and beyond, if they keep this up.

Kyle Orton at least gives them a knowledgeable leader who can read defenses and throw accurately. He can get rid of the football before he is sacked. He’s inconsistent, but he’s not consistently awful. Can he lead a comeback victory in the fourth quarter? Not often, no. But he has.

The Broncos are going to give Tebow, and themselves, another week to see if the Experiment can work. They’re going to keep tweaking the playbook and gameplan to try and use Tebow to his fullest potential. They want to see if Tebow can make his magic happen outside of the final minutes of the game.

Why bother? Tim Tebow just isn’t ready. Maybe he will be someday, but it behooves the Broncos to do right by the other 52 men on this roster. Give them something to fight for. We’ve seen what there is to see in Tebow.

It wouldn’t take something extraordinary to win this division, and I’ll take Kyle Ortonary over Tim Terrible every Sunday.

Ouch! Make it personal why don’t you? j/k :)

You certainly have to keep it in perspective because it’s not a rule but generally speaking, as the QB goes, so goes the team.

  • Davidl413

Wow.  I can’t believe I just read that.  Someone pining for the glory days of Kyle Orton.  Unbelievable.  Kyle Orton is done in Denver. He had his chance and he is the definition of mediocre.  Is Monty actually Kyle’s pen name?  Do you really think the Broncos are close to making a playoff push? They are a team full of holes.  The unlikely win against the Bengals as a reason for optimism is a bit of a stretch.  Tim Tebow has 5 career starts.  He’s looked awful part of the time, and pretty good part of the time (with flashes of brilliance mixed in).  I don’t think 5 starts is enough to make a final judgment. Steve Young, Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman and yes, John Elway had equal, or worse performances during their first 5 starts.  Doesn’t mean Tebow’s going to be on their level, I just think he needs more of a chance and a little more patience.

So yes, I say we trot Tebow out there and see what we’ve got.  If he’s terrible then maybe we’ll still have a shot for a good QB in the draft – http://www.denverpost.com/kiszla/ci_19244610

I disagree on Decker not being the #2, kid has earned his spot.

What I can’t stand is all these people with their knee jerk reactions. There is almost no instances on “immediate success” in the NFL, so what makes anyone expect immediate results from Tebow? Much less give them the right to act as if such a thing should be the only acceptable standard for Tebow?

Fact is that nobody has instant success by themselves when it comes to QB in the NFL. The past says that Elway, Steve Young, Brett Favre, et al all struggled when they were young (Elway was benched, Young & Favre traded cause they were “horrible”)

UNFAIR the naysayers claim. You can’t compare Tebow to Elway or anyone else. Why? Because Elway wasn’t at one time a struggling rookie? Revisionist history says we shouldn’t compare, but that’s only because we have a body of work from Elway that we don’t yet have from Tebow. I’m sure when people compared Elway to Unitas or any other crappy rookie QB that turned great, people said “YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!!” Well, guess what, people did and will always compare present athletes to past athletes. Elway proved a worthy candidate to compare, but he sure didn’t fit that mold 5 starts into his career. Like I said, after Elway’s body of work was complete, it showed everyone that the people who said you can’t compare Elway to Unitas were dead wrong, and the ones saying you can cause at that exact time, he performed like player X did as a rookie.

Recent history has players like Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez as QBs who had success, but guess what? They were only successful because they had a dominating team around them, and they were simply asked to be the person to take the snap, hand off, and occasionally pass the ball. That’s it. Nobody said “he only threw the ball 8 times that game, HE’S A BUST!!!” Why? Because the team around them was so strong that they won in spite of the QB, not because of the QB. Yet, Tebow is on a crap team that isn’t winning, so he’s obviously a bust. If Ryan, Flacco, or Sanchez were on the Broncos when they were rookies, believe me, they’d be labeled busts before they even had the chance to develop.

    ~Does Tebow look good? No
~Does Tebow win all his games? No
    -HOWEVER-
~Are the Broncos worse off by starting Tebow over Orton? No (2-3 vs 4-22) Basically, in the next 5 games, Tebow is in line to match 2 years of Orton’s winning percentage with this exact team.

What I want to ask everyone is this….. “What makes you think that any QB, be it future HOF QBs, Average QBs, or complete Busts for QBs, should only get a 2 game audition in a season, with now 5 games overall?” I’d have given Ryan Leaf more than 5 games to prove himself. Sure, he threw a prettier ball than Tebow, but that doesn’t disprove that even Leaf was rightfully given more than 5 games to prove himself. “we aren’t going anywhere anyways” is a common argument, but for those who say that Monty is right, and that we only have to close a 2 game gap with 9 to go, I ask you this… “What gives you even the slightest notion that Orton or Quinn can close that gap?” If anyone knows how little we have won with Orton as QB, it’s us Broncos fans. If we put Orton back in, we’ll be lucky to win 1 more game all year. If we put Quinn in, I’m willing to bet we don’t win a single game the rest of the year. If we keep Tebow in, we’ll win 1 more game at a minimum, and possibly more.

How can I say this? Because Tebow has proven through his small 5 game sampling to have a better winning percentage with this team than Orton. Tebow has proven with his 2 game 2011 season to have a much higher winning percentage than Orton. Given that statement, the QB that gives us the best chance to close the gap is the QB who wins 50% of his 2011 games (Tebow) instead of the QB who wins 20% of his 2011 games (Orton). I don’t care if we beat winless Miami. Orton has dropped games against HORRIBLE teams, so don’t give me this “Orton would have beaten Miami” nonsense, cause that is just not true. We’ve all seen this team lose to bottom dwelling teams, so save your breath and don’t even think about coming at me with that defense.

  • Bry

I read all of that for a winning percentage based on 2 games..smh..I could see if it was a “Tebow is playing better than Orton” or vice versa, but a wining percentage based on 2 games vs Orton’s 5 games…sheesh…

    Great write up tho

  • Anonymous

The thing is that Orton plays better than Tebow about 80% of the time, HOWEVER, that 20% of the time that Tebow plays better than Orton, he plays so much better, it more than makes up for the rest of the time that he struggles.

Occupy Tebow in the comments section! http://t.co/79NjKxoJ

Interesting how guys who played the game, were successful, won SB rings, are jealous of him and don’t know what they are talking about.  They can’t assess talent.  Add Alfred Williams and Shannon Sharpe to the list.  Heard Shannon on The Fan today – said he can’t make the throws etc.  So its ESPN and radio guys.

  • virginiabronco

Monty you mailed this one in. Too easy to see through this article.  Everyone is entitled to one so I forgive you.  The season was over once ALL the flaws came to light.  Trading the pro bowl WR was the final straw.  We had 3 years of KO.  He’s finished.  If you don’t like Tebow, put in Quinn and see if he can back up a rookie QB or a has been QB next year. KO or virtually no other QB was going to win that game Sunday against Detriot with this Bronco’s team.  Maybe we are able to kick a couple of additional field goals with KO in there but the result would have been the same and you know it Monty.

I think it is reaching that time that we move the conversation on to something else.  Maybe review the non existent Defensive secondary, or the weak offensive line, or finding a couple of WR’s, or finding another LB or two.  Here’s a thought with which everyone can agree (I think) Maybe they go out and look for a durable running back or two.

This idea that we want to bench a “rookie” QB with practically no NFL experience shows the hypocrisy or cowardness in those claiming earlier in the season that it was time to “try a new approach”. What did you think was going to happen?  Did you think we were suddenly a super bowl contender because we changed up the QB.  Most of us just wanted to see what Tebow was all about.  After 3 years we know what KO is all about.  3rd and 6, punt.  No downfield threat.  No leadership skills.  Falls down in the face of a rush.  No running skills.  Yeah, put him back in.  Give me a break.  You know better. You said as much earlier in the year.

I just wonder when next year rolls around and we draft and start a  new rookie phenom and we are sitting 1 -5, are we going to want to bench him too?  How many rookie QB’s can you remember having a great first year?  What about a great second year? If the Bronco’s don’t address the multitude of other problems they have, it isn’t going to matter who the put back there as QB.

I don’t think there is much left to say that hasn’t already been said 100 times.  It’s time to focus on all the other problems.  We know about the QB situation and the coach isn’t going any where.  I just hope I can live to see 2015 which I predict will be the earliest the Broncos will contend for a playoff spot.

  • Montana78

Tim Tebow is a reincarnation of Gino Terreta from Miami. The system made him look good in college but his mechanics suck and in MHO, he’ll never be an NFL quarterback regardless of all the love from the Bronco Tebow fanbase. Brady Quinn knows how to throw a football and get it to his receivers. He needs a realistic chance to play.

  • virginiabronco

Areferee, I almost always agree with your viewpoints but I have thrown in the towel on this coach’s desire to work with Tebow.  The coach isn’t going anywhere which means Tebow is. Elway has not provided any support either.  I have stated earlier that I think it might be time to bench Tebow in order to preserve the opportuinty to trade him for a 4th round pick or maybe better. If they keep sending him out there with the team we saw on Sunday and that game plan, he isn’t going to survive.  Some things are just not meant to be.  Time to rebuild.. AGAIN.

I do share your frustrations with Monty as I stated below.

good job Pete.  I should have read yours before I typed mine. It would have saved me some time.

  • virginiabronco

The only point I think you miss is Tebow does not have the support of Fox or Elway which means to me that Tebow’s days are numbered here.

  • Strawdog

Monty, if you look at this team and see a playoff contender…with anyone at QB other than maybe Tom Brady…I would like a little of whatever you’re smoking.

  • Willie Beamen

Orton was  struggling but so were a lot of qbs coming off a lockout shortened offseason. He was in the top ten in td passes when he was benched and 10 nfl quarters of play later hes still only 3 td passes back of the top ten . Broncos fans this year are consistently showing that they have loss touch with the NFL.

Orton is not a deep threat ? Did these people even follow the team last year ? Broncos fans have shown themselves to be so out of touch that instead of them demanding the aggressive pass attack of last year they basically ignored the crap offensive philosophy that Fox and MCcoy went with because all they cared about was not wins but TIm hitting the floor .

But now all there silly actions have done is hurt Tim ,hurt Orton, hurt DT,hurt Decker ,hurt Franklin hurt Miller and the rest of the Broncos players as well as the organization .

3rd and 6 last year we are going deep to Lloyd or Gaffney

3rd and 6 this year we are running receivers to the sticks and teams are sitting there waiting on it.

Orton did what he was told

Tim is doing what he is told

LLoyd knew it was garbage and said get him out of here

Since we went 6-0 in 2009 the broncos have given up 29 ppg defensively no QB is gonna win with that .

This fanbase is out of touch with football reality and these past two months will have serious longterm ramifications for the franchise.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

You could say the same thing about every team in this division. The Raiders look best to me, but they’re wildly inconsistent. Within our division, we’ve lost the closest games and played the toughest teams… we belong in the discussion for this division. This isn’t the 2011 NFC North.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

A few weeks ago I said KO played poorly enough for me to be OK with looking at Tebow. I’ve seen enough.

And I didn’t mail anything in. This article actually took me two days to write and fine-tune, but thanks.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Good points Pete, but in response I’ll just remain consistent. I’ve said a hundred different times I don’t judge QB’s by winning percentages. Just so everyone knows that’s not really an argument in which I put a lot of weight. I’m looking at stats, and the ol’ “eye ball test”, and Kyle Orton is better today. I’m just not a fan of starting a clearly inferior player for the sake of “finding things out.”

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

I just have my opinion. It’s not based on mainstream anybody.

I’m bailing on a starter when I believe the guy on the bench is better, and I always will.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

That’s a good line. “Orton is consistently average whereas Tebow is inconsistently great.” Props for that.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Patience at what price? Continually losing games this season? Having every other player in this locker room beat themselves up for “The Tim Tebow Experiment?”  That’s exactly the point I was trying to make with this article. The AFC West is a cakewalk, let’s put up a fight for it.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Thanks for all the feedback folks. A lot of interesting comments, food for thought, and great Denver debate.

    GO BRONCOS!!

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Again I just point to the fact that I don’t judge QB’s on their record, as others have discussed. Some do, and that’s fine. It’s just a disconnect when it comes to these debates. It’s a gap we can’t cross. Agree to disagree.

  • Colodevil

and what games have you watched?? I would rather loose every game with a player that wants to play rather than a player that just wants a paycheck. Orton just goes through the motions he has no heart or guts, great practice player but sucks in the game!!

  • virginiabronco

I think you have “seen” the same I have which is no front office support, no coaching support, no talent support  and a game plan that appears to have been put together about 20 minutes before kick off void of any adjustments during the game.  All that leads us to conclude there is no future for Tebow in Denver.  You just avoid the more conroversial approach by stating it more subtly and eloquently than me.

There is no way our Monty would abandon any rookie QB after just two starts in the season.  Especially not considering all the other problems this team has.  Especially not considering the Lions will likely be playing in the playoffs and COULD be a super bowl contender. Especally not since Tebow helped orchestrate a fourth qtr comeback just two weeks ago, on the road, in a tradionally difficult place for Denver to leave with a win.

No my friend, I think you have caved to the pressure.  BUT ultimately, I think your conclusions will prove to be right, not for the reasons you mention, but because Tebow has no support in the Denver organization.  And I know, you know that. (wink).

  • Pete

I have a Bronco fan since their 1st season when my father took us to a game. I am embarrassed that Fox seems to not back his quarterback. I hope they trade Tim Tebow so he has an opportunity to prove himself with the full support of whatever organization takes him under their wing. We have gone from being one of the elite organizations to a bottom feeder. I am heart broken this has happened. I am considering giving up on this organization, not the players. Good Luck Tim You deserve better along with all the other p[layers on this rooster.

This is what the Broncos should be doing. Trade Bailey and Dawkins, stock as many picks as possible. Both Offensive and defensive lines need to be revamped. We need a center and 2 gaurds. We Need 3 D tackles. Next Leave Tebow in to get his experience. At the Game last week, I sat in the 14th row and could not believe that the Broncos have a total of 7 plays for Tebow. The play calling is atrocious. the Offensive coordanator should be gone. Tebow is not a 5 and 7 step dropback QB. Tim should be rolling out or atleast using a moving pocket.  Anyway. Let Tim Play. Use the first overall pick to trade for that teams 1st round pick, second round pick and next years 1st and second. That is what you will get for Luck. Use those picks to draft Corners and a running back. The only position where the Broncos have strength is wide out.  We will still be 2 or 3 years out before Denver becomes a dominate team again. The Defense was neglected when Shanahan was here then that idiot McDaniels destroyed the offense. It will take time to build. Writew this season off, make the trades, stock picks let the young players get experience then in 2 years watch. Elway will do a fine job. You do not turn an NFL franchise around in 1 season. From a total rebuilding effort it will take 2 to 3 years.

I hesitate to raise this issue as I was never a fan of the way Cutler decided to part ways with the Bronco’s but it now appears he saw the handwriting on the wall and got out when he could. Marshall and Lloyd also figured it out. And to me, where they went says as much about the State of the Bronco’s organization as anything.  This orgainization is indeed in complete disaray.  Perhaps MCD is mostly to blame but no matter, it doesn’t change the facts.  I wrote about my concerns of this organization last year. As life long Bronco fan, I too remain very concerned but I am not giving up. Not giving up as long as they remain in Denver I should add.  Who else am I going to cheer for? I am too old to change now.

If the stadium quits filling and Tebow shirts stop selling, maybe they will choose to do something different.  We may have to survive the Fox era first but lets give him a little time to bring in his personnel.  We have waited this long.  Whats another 3 years of rebuilding?

  • virginiabronco

The next move for Dawkins is on a sideline with a coaching jacket.  He has indicated he wants to coach.  I agree with most of your post except the TEbow comment.  He has no support from Coaches or management. He is gone.  Bench him now while he can still walk and get a draft pick or a good trade for him after this season.  The coaches aren’t going to change.  They want to find “their” own person.  Fox is too old to adjust his methods and operations. He has his own play book and he feels players should adjust to him.  By the way, that is the way most “seasoned” and “experienced” coaches operate.  I do agree we need to move forward and allow Fox sometime to rebuild this franchise. I am beginning to have my doubts but I will give him some time.  He deserves that.

There is one other position I am happy with. You missed the fact that we have an awesome Punter!  :).

  • AtomicLeo

The title of this article sums up why I hoped the team could have sat on Tebow until late November of this year. Unfortunately, Orton played like garbage and here we are.

Hey how about starting a series of college QB that will likely declare for the draft this year? I’d rather read that than the rehashing Tebow/Orton crap.

Don’t be offended by my disagreement.  You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I respect it and the stand you are taking.  I admire this blog-site for that very reason.  All of the writers here are not afraid to take a stand.  I am just not at that same point at this moment, but you may well be right.  A difference of opinion is what stimulates both thought and discussion.  Keep it up!

You realize, of course, Kerry agrees with you! Now THAT is scary! :-)

“Closest games and toughest teams” needs to be mentioned in different paragraphs Monty!

Sure, we’ve played some of the “toughest teams” (Packers, Lions), but those were hardly “closest games” (2 horrible blowouts).
Sure, we’ve played the “closest games” (Raiders, Bengals, Titans, Chargers, Miami), but those guys are hardly “toughest teams”

Two of those “closest games” were only close/won cause of Tebow (Chargers and Miami). The Bengals took a Decker return TD and time expiring to not blow the lead to win. The Raider game wasn’t nearly as close as the score, neither was the Titans (Both losses).

So as you can see Monty, when we play GOOD teams, we get completely embarrassed. When we play bad teams, we play close or might even win. When we play mediocre teams, we’ll play close and maybe get a fluke win before our opponents have a chance to “gel”.

So no, we have absolutely no business being in the discussion for Division Champs.

Let me ask you this simple question. Say we draft Luck or Barkley, and say after 5 games, they look completely lost, are struggling in reading defenses, and misses open wide receivers because he hasn’t had time to develop chemistry and timing with them…. Do you bench either of those QBs? Given your “eye test”, they’ll look as horrible and out of depth as Chris Simms did when he was asked to start 1 game for us  his first year here. Given your “eye test”, he looks equally as bad as Tebow, if not worse. Do you cut that QB, bench that QB, or give that QB time to develop? Of course, the logical and sane answer is to give that QB time, regardless of how bad he looks. You know why? Because all QBs need time to develop, and Tebow certainly isn’t immune to that. A pretty throwing motion can throw just as many INTs, miss just as many WRs, and misread just as many defenses as a quirky throwing motion. You’d be willing to give Luck or anyone else time to develop, and you’d be the first person in here talking about how the young guy needs time, and to get off his back. So again, why oh why Mr. Hypocrite, don’t you give that same respect to Tebow?

Would “mailing it in” have changed reality? Nope.  Though I disagree that the Broncos are going in the tank by sticking with Tebow this week.  They are giving him every opportunity to improve and succeed.  They want Tebow to succeed so they can concentrate on other positions of need.  It is delusional to even think for one second that the organization would put one player on the field with the sole intent of having that player fail.

  • virginiabronco

JD you continue to miss my point.  I will try it again.  I have written this a few times now.  I don’t know anything about sabotage or conspiracy theories, my point has to do with the FACT that Fox has put Tebow out there and given him an opportunity to play Fox ball.  If Tebow can play the game Fox draws up, then Tebow might be able to stay.  IT really is that simple.  Obvisouly, Tebow is going to struggle to play the Fox game.  Fox isn’t going to change his coachng style or game plan to suit a player.  IT is too much work for a coach of his tenure to start over again.  He expects the player to adjust.  Tebow can’t.  So Tebow will be gone.

That is totally different than your statement of “It is delusional to even think for one second that the organization would put one player on the field with the sole intent of having that player fail.”

Fox gave him a shot to play Fox ball.  It is clear Fox is not going to change his style and apparently Tebow can’t.  Somebody has got to go.  Since No one in the front office is offering any support of Tebow, it is TEbow that is going to go.  Fox has shown Bronco nation that Fox is in charge now and we better get use to it.

Hopefully you got it this time.  Maybe you are telling someone else they are dilusional but your comments keep appearing after my posts.

The only folks that I would even respectfully call maybe a little dilusional are those fans that still believe Tebow has a chance to succeed in Denver with the current coach in place.

We all knew it wasn’t going to be a fix all starting Tebow, but now we are going to get all our questions answered. 2 games is still not enough to see what we have in Tebow. I feel its win win for us we get the answers and possibly and the #1 pick.
