Kyle Orton

The arguments for starting Tim Tebow have always come from the same angle:

“The Denver Broncos aren’t going to do anything in 2011. Why not start Tebow so the Broncos can see what they have?”

Forgive me for preserving an iota of hope for this season, but I’ve seen enough. The Tim Tebow Experiment is over. Let Kyle Orton, a competent, experienced, albeit inconsistent quarterback, take over again. There is still a nine-game season to salvage.

Not worth it, you say? You’d rather tank the season for Andrew Luck, you say?

The Broncos are seven games in, sitting at 2-5. Team-for-team, the rest of the division is all at 4-3. That’s a two-game deficit with nine games to play.

Are Broncos fans really giving up already? Have we really succumbed to that much malaise?

We’ve given up hope without a quarterback, but we’re going to let Matt Cassel win this division again?!

The Kansas City Chiefs started the season at 0-3. They lost by 37 points to the Buffalo Bills, 45 points to the Detroit Lions (10 more than the deficit by which the Broncos lost last week), and three points to the San Diego Chargers. All hope seemed lost in Missouri, even after winning two close games against winless teams to move to 2-3. Those were hardly impressive victories, considering the opponents.

But the team started believing. They traveled to Oakland and blew out the Raiders 28-0. They followed that up with an impressive, albeit lucky victory against the San Diego Chargers in overtime Monday night. They now have four straight wins, a 4-3 record, and are first place in the AFC West. Don’t tell me a turnaround isn’t possible.

And don’t tell me the Kansas City Chiefs would rather be 2-5 and putting up a fight in the Andrew Luck contest than sitting at 4-3 right now. There isn’t a player or fan who would trade places with a Denver Broncos counterpart right now.

There’s reason to believe, Broncos country. The Broncos actually boast the most impressive win in the division: their Week 2 victory against the 5-2 Cincinnati Bengals is actually the most statistically impressive win of the AFC West this season. Only the Raiders can claim a similar victory, their Week 2 win against the 5-3 Houston Texans, and Denver’s is still better.

Three of the Broncos’ five losses came by a mere three points. Take out blowouts from the Green Bay Packers and Lions — two of the best teams in the NFL so far this year — and the season doesn’t look so lost.

But they won’t go far this season with Tebow.

Starting Tim Tebow is like raising a white flag on the season. Broncos’ opponents admit that they are daring our quarterback to “be a quarterback.”

Did you read comments from Broncos’ opponents last Sunday? John Fox and John Elway are going to lose this locker room quickly, for 2011 and beyond, if they keep this up.

Kyle Orton at least gives them a knowledgeable leader who can read defenses and throw accurately. He can get rid of the football before he is sacked. He’s inconsistent, but he’s not consistently awful. Can he lead a comeback victory in the fourth quarter? Not often, no. But he has.

The Broncos are going to give Tebow, and themselves, another week to see if the Experiment can work. They’re going to keep tweaking the playbook and gameplan to try and use Tebow to his fullest potential. They want to see if Tebow can make his magic happen outside of the final minutes of the game.

Why bother? Tim Tebow just isn’t ready. Maybe he will be someday, but it behooves the Broncos to do right by the other 52 men on this roster. Give them something to fight for. We’ve seen what there is to see in Tebow.

It wouldn’t take something extraordinary to win this division, and I’ll take Kyle Ortonary over Tim Terrible every Sunday.

If Kyle Orton was actually competent I would say start him but the fact is that Tim has started just 5 games and is 2 shy of tying Orton’s win record over his last 22 starts.

Why in the hell would we go back to Orton who is 4 – 22 and who has put up games every bit as bad as Tebow did last week?

If anything put Quinn in after this week if Tebow doesn’t step it up. Nobody is going to give us a worse record than Orton did.

  • Anonymous

interesting point of view.  I bet that Orton will play better now with out the constant pressure from the whole world wanting to see  Tebow play. But I am still torn.  I agree that Fox risks losing this team if he continues to to start Tebow if he continues his struggle,  but I still want to see if he can progress.  I guess I will have a stronger opinion after the Raiders game
    BTW I hate the Raiders

  • Anonymous

    Amen, brother.

I think the tebowmaniacs might need one more game to get it through their thick skulls, though.

  • Datguyski

    Peyton Manning’s first 16 games…..3 and 13.
    The Lion’s Matt Stafford, first 13 games…..3 and 10.
    Tim Tebow’s first 5 games….2 and 3.
Don’t let the press talk us out of a QB that is still trying to adjust to the pro game. Let the kid learn. Play Tebow.

  • Anonymous

I like Tebow but if he doesn’t show some improvement against the Raiders he needs to be on the bench. Tebow isn’t Manning or Stafford. What he has to overcome in deficencies is so huge compared to them. Manning and Stafford could throw a spiral for Pete’s sake.

  • http://twitter.com/Sinfix Anthony

Tim Tebow’s stats thru 5 games look about the same as John Elways thru 5 games, maybe even a little better.

Good thing Elway came before the social media explosion, you all would have been calling for him to be benched as well.

  • Anonymous

Elway also played in a different era where one could literally maul a WR. Throw those stats out of the window because they don’t apply.

  • Anonymous

There is simply no way that this team stands a chance with Orton at the helm.  We were 1-4 with him starting and got beat up just as badly as we have with Tebow.  I think Tebow has looked awful but I don’t think for one second that Orton is going to be enough of an improvement to get us into playoff contention, especially considering his main target isn’t even on the team anymore.  If anything I would give Quinn a chance but my gut tells me we’ll still get our asses kicked.  The fact of the matter is our team is AWFUL and we’ll be lucky to win another game this year regardless of the QB.  It’s going to take at least an 8-8 record to win the division and anyone who thinks the Broncos can go 6-3 from here on out is smoking peyote.

  • Padenerik

When I watch my beloved Broncos, from last year to this year, I keep thinking the same thing: They have no heart.  They don’t play tough football.  They have their moments, but overall they are just not a very good team and will not win the division.  So it does not matter who the quarterback is.  Might as well let Tebow play a few games and see if he gets any better.  The team has to give him a chance like they did for Orton.

  • Dante Pakistan

Ha! Those fools will never get it. Tebow’s awful play hadn’t been his fault, it’s all Fix and McCoy’s fault, they’re sabotaging him remember?

  • Anonymous

Nobody needed social media to call for Elway to be benched or traded.

  • Anonymous

John also actually looked like an NFL QB.

  • rcsodak

LMAO! NO QB has ever looked as sadly as TT has.
And enough of this ‘no talent’ around him. Ironic how everybody was saying the wr group was among the best in the league….that is, until they cant catch TT’s fluttering and over/underthrown ducks.

  • Greenecoservice

Many people are way to negative.  Tebow will prove he has what it takes.  He learns best with consistent reps.  Be patient.  He’ll do great for the Broncos and Colorado.  Have a little faith.  Tebow and the Broncos aren’t quitters and we shouldn’t be either.

  • Michael Curry

Who was saying Denver’s wide receivers were among the best in the league? Lloyd was the best receiver on the team, but the Broncos shipped him out.

  • Michael Curry

Tebow’s biggest problem is that the players turned analysts on ESPN can’t stand Tebow’s popularity coming into the NFL.   He did decent in three starts last year and is 1-1 this year (yes I know it was against Miami, the same Miami that almost beat the Giants this week).  These so-called analysts are invested in him not succeeding, because they were embarrassed when McDaniels, a proclaimed QB guru, drafted Tebow in the first round.

  • MN Broncos Guy

Sorry Monty, I respect your opinion but our season is in the tank, our schedule does not get easier and unless we can dominate our division, that ship has sailed.

Orton is consistently average whereas Tebow is inconsistently great.  TT passing game is horrible right now but that can and will improve, he has all other attributes of a winning QB.

  • http://profiles.google.com/michael.nahra Michael Nahra

I hope they play Tebow the rest of the year so Orton can remain healthy and continue with a better football team next year.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, that’s his biggest problem.  Not his terrible accuracy, his awful footwork, his slow read progression or his glacial throwing motion.

It’s Mark Schlereth and Cris Carter.

  • rcsodak

Seriously?  It was the talk of the summer on every Broncos board ive seen.

Orton, at best, is an average quarterback.  Won’t win a division, let alone a league championship, or a super bowl.  Find out if Tebow can win.  Personally, I think he is a jerk for foisting his religion on us at every turn. If Tebow can’t win. Find a quarterback who can.

  • Kellyleephipps

Well, last week I said we could win this game and if KC beats the Dolts we’d be one game out of 1st place. Only half of that occurred…we had a major let down…and Tebow led the way with his atrocious play. But I’m not ready to throw him under the bus just yet. With all his mechanics off and only 15 practices under his belt before the Lions roared, I need to see more before I go promote Quinn or reinstate Orton. Those guys are goners at season’s end…let them go. We still have Tebow under contract for a few years and he could be a serviceable backup if things don’t click for him. We could always use him as a back-up running back or to lead the Wild Horse formation…I’m hoping that they click with his invaluable intangibles like leadership, will-to-win, athleticism, etc. You just want his enthusiasm and character on this team, on any team. This week we find ourselves 2 games back from 1st place in our division, not terrible…obviously our division is experiencing growing pains… KC pulled themselves out the gutter of 0-3 and maybe we can too! We have the Raiders next week, and they have a new QB in Palmer who threw like 3 picks and looked as bad as Tebow has…so this is anyone’s game…I think the defense will come together out of self-respect and the offense will begin to click at least a little more for Tebow…he wants to beat the team he played against last year for sure…his first rivalry game! Who knows, one of these games it might just click for him and the WRs – timing, getting rid of the pass, rolling out left so as to not run into the guy Franklin can’t block, etc… LOLI think San Diego is on the downslide, they’ve got an undefeated Green Bay team this week and are almost certain to go 4-4…If we beat the Raiders, they’ll be 4-4 too! And we’ll be right there in the thick of a struggling division at 3-5 if we win…I’m not predicting playoffs or anything…just looking for growth and development. I would go all out with the youth movement and start Carter and Moore and Irving and Harris just to see how they grow…ain’t gonna get that early spike in Madden OVR points next year if you leave em on the bench! LOLIN any case, we can all forget about everything that has transpired so far and just focus on beating the hated rival Raiders…If we can accomplish that, I think there may be some positive vibes around here next week…again…

  • Mross

Ryan Leaf, J. Russel, A. Smith- come on there are others….

The kid needs to learn – a – lot- .. it is painfull yes, but let him have a few more weeks to learn and then I may agree that he is not ready.  Still holding out hope that he finds his way or any type of rythum…

  • Kerry

    Finally!!! Someone who gets it.

  • Buddyshark

    Definitely go back to Orton.

  • areferee

WOW, Kyle!  You have become main-street media.  Merrill Hoge, Boomer Esiason, Kyle, our Main-Man “Monty”???

Never thought I would see it. Couldn’t disagree more.  It’s far too early to bail on Tebow, and Kyle Orton?  No way!  There is too much hype on both sides.  But now we know where you stand.

  • Anonymous

Why are you responding to me with this? I never said the Bronco’s had a great WR group and neither did anyone else that wasn’t a Bronco fan. “LMAO!”

I also never said Tebow doesn’t have any talent around him. I said he hasn’t shown anything with what he does have.

Kyle Orton looked every bit as bad against SD. He also looked as bad against the Raiders (1st game), Chiefs (2nd game), Jets and Cards last year.

  • King

Wow.  If it was said on the Broncos Boards, it must be gospel then.

Our receivers are average, at best.  The young receivers should be given more time, as with the young QB.

  • King

The social media works both ways.  Everybody is an ‘expert’ with it.

  • King

I agree.  Our season was over under Orton and our weak o-line/spotty defense taking us to 1-4.  Any season where we don’t make the playoffs is a failure, imo.

Might as well let Tebow finish out the year.  And this is what I don’t understand about the haters:  They don’t even have the wisdom to see what they have in the kid after several starts.  You don’t want to trade a player to another team and see him come back and beat you after a couple of seasons.  That pain can go on for years.  We are not going to get Luck and I agree with Simms take on him.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

When the Broncos were 6-0 in McDaniels’ first season, people used that record to show that Orton was a Winner. He Just Wins Games.

I wonder where those people are now, anyway?

My point is…if you’re going to look at statistics, you need to go to something like football outsiders and look at individual performance statistics, not win-loss record.

Hint: Tebow doesn’t rank very well on them.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

To be fair, WR is widely considered one of our strongest positions. Maybe a bit less so with Lloyd shipped out.

  • SuaRed

We need to see what we have with Tebow!
The whole team sucked on Sunday! That includes the coaches and the poor offensive and defensive play calling!

Tebow may not be the answer! However he’ll determine if we draft a QB in the first or 2-3 rounds!

Look at the last 2 games of last year when we had a dynamic exciting talent playing Quarterback . This year we have a deflated player lacking all confidence! All the confidence sucked out of him through poor management!

Lets sit and see what we’ve got! If McGahee is back maybe we control the ball a little better!  Going back to Orton!!! What kind of message does that send out?

This team is not a playoff TEAM! Regardless of who plays QB

  • Anonymous

Agreed but that isn’t because we have 1 of the stronger units in the league, that is because everything else is crappy haha.

Plus we just shipped out our #1 and Decker wouldn’t even be the #2 on about half the teams in the league (although he does look great for a 2nd year WR).

  • plato68

Spot on man play Brady Quinn if Tebow does’nt pan out on Sunday.

  • Give It TIME!!!!

Im sick of you damn media people, he wins last week he is a really good QB that knows how to win. This week he looses to a good detriot team and all of sudden he is the worst quaterback in the NFl and we need to start Orton. why can you just wait and see what is gonna happen for once in your life. before Tebow started this guy wrote numerous stories about how we should be starting tebow. and  now all of sudden he is a hater. we lost to detriot 45 to 10. a few weeks ago the Chiefs lost to them just as bad.

  • plato68

All Tebow can throw are floppy hogans. Tebow is by far the worst spiral thrower ive seen in recent years.

  • plato68

Elway could throw I can’t believe your even trying to compare the two. Elway great throwing mechanics not to mention a full head of hair oh and great teeth, come on man don’t even try to compare Tebow with Elway, just like oil and water they don’t mix.

  • plato68

    YEAH OK

  • rcsodak

Granted the aforementioned were busts.  But at least they could throw forward passes. Again, I’ve never seen such poor play by an NFL qb.

    lol @ glacial throwing motion!

  • Vincemarine

Neither KO or Quinn are signed through next year and Tebow is not a definate QB for Denver next year either.  With that being said I think we should give Tebow the next two games, then given Quinn the next four.  This will give all three QB’s 4 games a piece.  Who ever does the best should get the remaining games of the year and compete for the stater next year.  The other two would go away.  I believe EFX dedicated this year to auditioning the players to see who stays and who goes for next year, which includes QB’s.  If Tebow is one of the odd men out, I wouldn’t get rid of him.  I would switch him to a HB or H-back, because lets face it we need his leadership on this team.

  • Bry

I just dont know anymore. I always thought it was impossible to have 3 crappy QB’s on one roster.

Regardless of who plays and who sits the bench, I just eant to see a competitive team on the field. I can deal with some losses but getting blown out is terrible.

  • Thatsokay23

The first three paragraphs are a turn off to your entire story, yea let’s put Orton in to salvage the season….Smh. He ( orton ) only won one game outta 5. He’ll save the season alrite

  • Thatsokay23

I guarantee no receiver cares about a spiral, as long as they get the ball, I seen game winning passes that were super wobbly by these so called elite qbs. Don’ be too quick to judge homes, he is in the NFL……….

  • Kellyleephipps

The season is toast already…it’s time to start enjoying things in the spontaneous moment as they happen…why live for the future or in the past, when you can just enjoy each moment our team does something cool…last week there weren’t too many moments to enjoy, admittedly.  However, we’ve got the Raiders this week and KC next…so let’s play our division and see what the young guys can bring…let’s focus on the positive developments…and get ready to restock some vital needs in the next draft.

  • MN Broncos Guy

Here is what I would like to see.  Charlie Batch is the best #2 or #3 in the league – not because of his abilities but because he is the best wingman out there.

What if Neckbeard was Tebow’s Charlie Batch?  Lets face it, he could use someone like Orton – who is accurate… to help him out.  Keep him around, pay him the league min..he stays in the NFL (doesnt have to sell insurance), doesn’t have to shave…one big happy family.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I’m still a believer that Win-Loss is a QB statistic.  Just make sure your team is better than the other guy’s.
