Tim Tebow

It all remarkably came together in the end.

For over three quarters Sunday, there weren’t enough critical phrases or four-letter words in the English language to describe the putridity that was the Denver Broncos offense. Tim Tebow was 3 for 10 passing. The offense was 0 for 9 in third down attempts, and Tebow had been sacked six times. Matt Prater had missed two field goals, and the Broncos were dangerously close to suffering their first shutout loss in nearly two decades.

But then Tebow and company pulled it together. With less than four minutes to play, down 15-0, Tebow took to the air, delivering two touchdown drives off two touchdown passes and forcing overtime. Then, on the third possession of overtime, D.J. Williams‘ strip-sack of Dolphins QB Matt Moore gave Prater an opportunity for 52-yard redemption, which he successfully converted. The Broncos won 18-15.

It was the second win of the Broncos’ 2-4 season, while the Dolphins moved to 0-6.

Did Tebow do enough in the game’s final minutes to give you confidence he should continue to start? What can the Broncos do to make sure they get that level of production from him for four quarters? We have a lot of topics to debate and discuss, Broncos fans, but soak up something we haven’t felt much of in the past two years: a Broncos win.

It was ugly until the very end. But I’ll take a win no matter how it is delivered!

Tebow was really exciting when he got hot late in the game, but he needs to show up in the first three quarters if we are going to win any more games this year.

I also hope McCoy and Fox can come up with some better play calling.  Hope McGahee is alright too because when he went down with a hand injury our running game was dead.

Anyway, feels great to win! Go Broncos!

  • Tyrus

Tim Tebow is a winner,  sure the Broncos were having a lackluster start.
But if you have a winner leading the charge, It may not always be perfect.
But a Win is a Win!   – Besides any comeback has to be exciting, Elway used to do it all the time.

  • Jrod

I’d rather have a 4th qtr QB than a 1st qtr QB (cough* orton cough*)

  • Anonymous

Wait, is the question seriously whether “he should continue to start?”  I think there is a mounting pile of evidence that Tim Tebow, as deeply flawed a QB as he may be, actually possesses magic powers.  It’s incredible.  I KNOW that a certain someone else was a far better quarterback overall, so I’m not making a GENERAL comparison between the two, but let’s just say there’s only been one other Broncos QB in my lifetime who I could imagine leading today’s comeback.

    UGLY!

Somehow, winning ugly seems better than losing with a fistful of stats!

  • Phil

A W feels great and especially so with an exciting come from behind victory. It was definitely an ugly game for 3 quarters. I noticed that the offense came alive once Tebow settled down in the pocket and once we started calling more passing plays. We need a balanced attack (run/pass) to be effective. Tebow can establish rhythm and accuracy if we allow him to throw the ball.

  • bostonianbronco

I agree with most of you guys. A very ugly day for 90% of the game. I would agree with those claiming that the play calling needs to be a bit more aggressive. It seems it the game was pretty much mailed in before the coaching staff decided they had nothing more to lose and opened up the offense a bit. We may have to run a LOT more spread offense. It was fun to watch. It was a pretty remarkable ending. Credit to the defense for keeping it so close all day!!! Also, to Prater for responding and hitting that kick.

  • http://thingsatrexdoes.tumblr.com Mike Birtwistle

If one of the ways we judged Orton by his wins – or lack of them – then we  should judge Tim the same.  But this was ugly, horrible almost unwatchable for 55 minutes.

But a win is a win is a win.  The Broncos get the same amount of wins as the Texans did today.

  • Kellyleephipps

All I could think the whole game was that Tebow hasn’t experienced HELL until the media analyzes his game this week..LOL

Then the miracle comeback began and when he crossed the goal line to tie the game, it was like a moment out of the Matrix, when the operator sees Neo grab hold of the rope connected to the helicopter and says in amazement, “HE IS THE ONE!”

Agree…it was the ugliest three quarters of football ever…but we got our 400th win and broke the 0-7 streak in Miami and pulled out a miraculous overtime victory…plus the Jets beat San Diego making them 4-2!  We are only 2.5 games behind first place in our division.  WE COULD GO ALL THE WAY…if Tebow can learn to hit a wide open receiver!

  • Anonymous

I have the solution! Trade for Tony Romo…pull Romo fourth quarter and put Tebow in…we can’t lose!

  • NMBronc-in-DC

This will end up being a very difficult decision for EFX.  Tebow is not yet even close to being a real NFL QB, but in the end he did what matters – win.

I have to think that as long he continues to win and continues to improve as a pocket passer, we not draft a QB.

Regardless, it was damn nice not to watch Orton today.

  • virginiabronco

Fox had 2 weeks to prepare the offense and this was the best he could do?
Tebow only had 5 pass attempts in the first half. Now there is a great game plan to test the new QB (sarcastic). Come on Fox!  Tebow marches down the field on two consecutive drives to tie the game completing like 80% of his passes so what does Fox do to start the overtime, RUN, RUN, QB sacked on obvious pass down, punt, we get it back again, run, run, run game winning FG of 53 yards.  This coach is making me wonder if he even wants Tebow to have a chance to succeed.   I think any of us could have put a better game plan in place against Miami given the fact that we would have 2 weeks to prepare.  If the idea is to see what we have in Tebow, then let him throw.  Give him a chance to get comfortable.  I think any coach given this team that he inherited should be given some time to get his plan and personnel in place.  I was going to give him a year or two before I turned critical if need be, but I must admit after today, I am beginning to worry about this guy Fox. Maybe there was a reason he only won 1 game last year.
I am also getting a little tired of hearing how Tebow is missing open receivers.  Maybe those being critical should go back and look at some of Elway’s early YEARS.  Even middle YEARS.  Now in NO way am I comparing Tebow to Elway but Elway did miss a lot of open receivers AND force a lot of balls that ended up being intercepted.  Lets give Tebow some time and see what happens but I hope the coaching staff will do their job and put a better plan in place for next week.

What a fucking disaster, so much for getting a real QB next year, goodbye Luck, wish you could have a been a Bronco.

How bad was Tebow, this fool is unwatchable. I have watched high school games with better QBs. I don’t want to hear shit about how great Tebow is. Our D played decent and kept us in this game. Tebow took way too many sacks, which were his fault holding onto the ball too long. The only reason he came back was cause the Fins went into a prevent opening up the middle for Tebow. He is still an awful QB and we will never ever be a contender with him leading us.

  • 12508

This win sets us back another three or four years. Bottom line is Tebow looked awful. Miami was the real winner today. The numbers don’t lie. It’s a better watch than Orton but if you think you can win a super bowl with Tebow your nuts.

  • Anonymous

A bit early for the excuses isn’t it?  Perhaps the reason Tebow threw only 8 passes in the first half is because he wasn’t doing a very good job throwing the ball.  He looked lost in the pocket for 50 minutes. Tebow had the same 2 weeks to prepare as well. Is he not accountable for the bad throws he makes?

I said as much earlier that Miami would try and make Tebow beat them through the air and I was called a Tebow hater for pointing out the obvious.

  • Dante Pakistan

    +1,000,000

  • Dante Pakistan

    Tebow couldn’t buy a completion against Miami’s cover 2.

  • virginiabronco

and how many 4th quarter comebacks have you witnessed in the last three years with KO in charge?
The game plan was a factor in the number of sacks.  I don’t recall a 1st down pass attempt for the first 3 1/2 quarters putting Tebow in obvious passing situations and exposing him to the blitz.  Maybe someone will introduce the screeen play to Fox and explain to him he doen’t have to wait till the fourth quarter to run it.  Maybe spread the offense and insert a slant once or twice a game.  How hard is that when you have 2 weeks to prepare?  At least 2 balls were clear and obvious drops.  All in all, it wasnt’ pretty as has been stated but the team showed something that has been lacking for the last 3 years, a desire to win and a passion to play the game. And no one can deny that it was exciting to watch if even just for one quarter!

  • virginiabronco

This just in… Tebow beat them through the air

  • Anonymous

“Did Tebow do enough in the game’s final minutes to give you confidence he should continue to start?”

Nope.  Showing up for the last five minutes is not going to cut it.

  • virginiabronco

I guess I am stupid as I don’t undertand your point.  If you win the game in the last 5 minutes I think it was good that he showed up.  I am glad we finally have a QB that enjoys playing the last quarter of a game.  He almost won last week you remember.

I will give you this, he didn’t do enough to convince the Tebow haters that he deserves another chance.  To which I ask, who do you want to insert next?  KO or Quinn?  KO had 3 years.  I think Tebow deserves a better game plan and a few more games before anyone (including me) can determine if he has a chance to be successful.

How many different ways can Fox and McCoy run McGahee and Tebow until Tebow remembers how to throw?

How many excuses will the worshipers be making next week?

Contrary to what the worshipers believe, every down counts.  Getting sacked 6 times is not good especially when you’re pushing Tebow’s ability to extend the play.  You can’t blame that on the play calling either.  Anybody with an ounce of sense knew Miami was going to make Tebow throw.  Up to the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter Miami was able to get the job done, though Tebow’s inability to make throws made it a whole lot easier.

As you said it does feel great to win but I think we have our answer regarding Tebow.  I am sure we’ll be reminded how Elway lined up behind the guard for one play.

  • Anonymous

Reminds me of the old Dan Reeves days… handcuff Elway for the first 3 1/2 quarters, then say “fuck it, go do your thing John.”…. Seems like Fox is coaching this team that same way. 3 yards and a cloud of dust every play till midway through the 4th quarter, then he says “fuck it Tim, do your thing.” , to which Tebow does what Elway does, mainly snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat once the coach takes the handcuffs off of him.

This is by far a pretty win. It was mostly ugly, and I have to admit, in my mind I was thinking “Orton would at least get us into field goal range”, BUT, we all have to remember that these will be the “growing pain” stages of Tebow and our Team. Stick with him, and before too long, he’ll be dominating in the first few quarters instead of waiting till the 4th.

  • anthony33

I have been shouting since the beginning to play Tebow. Not because I thought he would be great, but because I thought he might have a chance to great or at least far better than what we have.  Playing him was the only way to find out.

My perspective is a little jaded as I left the sports bar we were watching the game in with something like eleven minutes left in the game.  To that point  I would have to say that was the worst offensive performance I have ever seen by a Denver team and Tebow was just plain awful.  It reminded me of his performance in the Senior bowl a couple of years ago.  Not seeing the last eleven minutes it’s hard to believe we actually won this game.  Can’t wait to see the highlights, but still VERY concerned to what I saw up until the 11 minute mark.

Can this guy make it as an NFL QB.  Jury isn’t even seated yet IMO.

  • Davidl413

Super Bowl?!! Easy. I’m just happy to see them win a game. Andrew Luck may be great. Maybe not. Joey Harrington, David Carr, Tim Couch anyone?? To say this win sets the Broncos back 3-4 years is hyperbole. Let’s see what Tebow can do if Fox takes off the training wheels for a whole game.

  • Troyn

Really love haters like you and wonder if you are really a Bronco’s fan.  I have been since Morton was QB, and other than the GOAT, Tebow is the only QB that has the it factor that separates winners from losers.  He can be ugly at times, but he has the potential to be great, not in the traditional way maybe, but quite possibly, with the right offense, in the SB winning way, and that is all that matters.

  • virginiabronco

”It’s tough to say, but man, Timmy did a great job,” said Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, who played with Tebow at Florida. ”Hopefully the critics will get off him about what he can’t do and talk about the things that he can do, and that’s figure out a way to win the game, no matter what.”

Who am I to argue with that!

  • virginiabronco

Well said Mr. Pete.  I remember those Dan Reeves days very well.

  • Strawdog

    Yup!

  • Strawdog

It’s only going to hurt when you look at the scoreboard.

  • Strawdog

Inexperienced, sloppy, and erratic.  But, he made some plays only the gods make.  And he won.  I’ll ride with this kid.

  • Strawdog

Yes, the play calling was troubling.  Tebow plays Plummer ball…this was a Griese gameplan.

  • D Gironda

Tim Tebow wins, end of story. He is smart, coachable, has passion, and the will to win. I want him on my team no matter at what position he plays.

  • Kriscombinedtm

Wow! A comeback for the ages. I did not like the play calling, but let’s give the coaches a couple weeks to find out how to use their new weapon. The throwback screen was a great call as was the 2 point conversion. Tebow looked the best with 5 wide in the shotgun. Guys named Brady and Rodgers also like that formation.

  • Kellyleephipps

Tebow may have had high inaccuracy…he seemed like he was thinking way too much until the end when instinct kicked in…But no INT is great!  Meanwhile the Raiders had 6 INT…would you rather be that team today?

  • rcsodak

Standing back there, not knowing whether to run or pass (resulting in a sack) is equivalent to a pass play. Its not up to fox to throw the ball(or Mccoy). If TT can’t trust the wr’s enough to anticipate their break, and release the ball early, he’ll NEVER make it. He could wait when he was on a college team with better athletes than the competition. But this ain’t college.

  • rcsodak

Prevent D’s are grand, aren’t they?

  • rcsodak

Did they play the hapless/winless fins today?

    Didn’t think so.

If thia had been ANY other team, denver woulda been SMOKED!

    Wow….eyes wide shut. Lol

  • Moncler
  • Kellyleephipps

I guess the Offense will have to do better next week then…I’m hoping they find their fire early and light it up against Detroit…

  • Lonebison

Timmy TeaBag needs to get his virgin ass laid if he is ever gonna grow up & be a man, let alone an NFL quarterback. His passing was horrendous & should have had 2 picks that he threw right to Dolphin players but I guess baby Jesus made them drop the ball.
The Dolphins have the worst defense in the league & this is the best the wanna-be messiah can do? Change his name to Timmy TeeBUST!

  • King

The Denver Broncos organization has to decide if they’re going to run a semi-spread offensive.  That is if they want to keep Tebow as the starter in the future.  People that say, “you can’t run the spread in the NFL” are wrong.  You can run a spread-type offense if you build around/for it.

The best part about this win is seeing that Merril Hoge is eating crow after predicting a Miami win.

  • King

Geez Louise, our O-line sucks.  That’s why we have so many sacks.  Even Orton wasn’t to blame for all of his sacks.  QB has to be given a certain amount of time to throw the ball.  Even Tom Brady gets sacked/throws errant passes when he is pressured consistently.

Let us also remember that the Dolphins do have a decent defense.

  • King

Actually no, Fox didn’t have 2 weeks.  Because of the new CBA rules, no practice can be held wed-sun of a bye week.  So Denver only had 5 or 6 practices at the most the past 2 weeks.

  • King

You and I must not have watched the same game.  Miami was only in prevent for a few plays in the last 2 drives.

  • King

Ever notice how the Tebow haters like Dante have little-no vocabulary and/or a potty mouth!  lol

And, uh, we were never in the running for Luck.  (Colts, Dolphins, Vikings, Rams are)  Yes, that’s right, the Rams.  I don’t see Bradford working out long-term in the NFL.  He throws too many picks when he gets pressured.

  • King

You sure don’t sound like a Denver Broncos fan.  Suck for Luck will turn into “Suck with Luck”.  He’s overrated and will be a 2nd stringer in the NFL in 3-4 years.

When all the ‘experts’ say someone is going to be great, turn around and run from that player.

  • King

    A “W” is a “W”.  I’m too pragmatic to care how it’s done.

Whether you win by 1 point or 100, it makes no difference.

  • King

Yep.  Elway would not have made it in today’s NFL.  The fans have no patience with new QB’s.  Society as a whole is in the gutter.

  • King

“If” my grandmother had nuts, she’d be my grandpa.

    We won.  Enjoy it.
