The Denver Broncos on Monday agreed to trade veteran wide receiver Brandon Lloyd to the St. Louis Rams for a conditional selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.  Denver’s Executive Vice President of Football Operations, John Elway, announced the move via twitter on Monday afternoon.

“We appreciate all the hard work that Brandon did during his three years in Denver and wish him the best with the Rams,” tweeted Elway.

The Rams offensive coordinator is former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels.  Under McDaniels in 2010, Lloyd had his most productive season, so the move makes sense.  The conditional pick is reportedly a sixth rounder that could turn into a fifth round selection, depending on Lloyd’s productivity in St. Louis.

We’ll have more of this story later this evening.  For now, dish out your thoughts on the trade in the comments.

  • King

A smart long-term move by the Broncos.

  • Alexn

Another dumb move by the broncos!!  Why would you trade away your leading reciever! Who is going to be your play maker now?  It does not seem that the broncos really want to win!!

  • Anonymous

Well for one he requested to be traded and another is he is going to be a FA next yr.  If the guy doesn’t want to be here why keep him?  Why not trade away now and get something for him instead of losing him next yr for nothing?  He wouldn’t of re-signed with us next yr.  Yeah, I wish they would of received more in return for him, but better than nothing.  Plus it is time to give the other guys (Decker, D. Thomas and Willis) some more playing time and experience.  Lloyd is 30+ and prob only had 3-4 more years left in him.  I like the move and hope he does well in STL.

  • flbronc

or the broncos really realize that the state of the team cannot win now.  it will be two or three years until we are truly competitive, if we catch a few breaks along the way.

lloyd will be winding down his career at that point- and will likely look for a hefty contract at the end of this year (as it will probably be his last).

  • Sanch5077

looks like we take the next step toward number 1 pick Andrew Luck.. (standford) Hmmm didnt Elway come from that college… :)

  • Bronco FANatic

I can’t believe what is going on!  In the off season we let our 2nd leading receiver go and now we let Lloyd go.  the ONLY guy on the team who will go up and get that *&!@# ball!  With Tebow coming in he needs all the support and play makers we can give him.  He was good for moral and PR. We are $25M under the cap.  Should have made a deal to keep Lloyd here.  You’ve got to spend some money to keep play makers to create a winning team, playoffs, etc.  Look at the Super Bowl years.  Mr. Bowlen, are you still running the show?!  Be surprised if we win another game all year.

  • L-Dubya

The Broncos must have hired Matt Millen’s developmentally challenged cousin as a GM.  This is another idiotic move by Xanders.  I guess it really doesn’t matter now that we have a QB that can’t throw an accurate pass beyond 10 yards.  At least we’re well on our way to getting Luck in the draft.

  • Kellyleephipps

Hopefully this means they keep the younger Eddie Royal, and that he will come back and make some huge strides toward getting back to his rookie year performance.  Plus I still have his Jersey, so it would have been awkward wearing it to games…LOL

  • Anonymous

    Yawn….

  • King

I agree.  It’s a good think a lot of these guys aren’t GM of a football team.  LLoyd was 30 years old and wanted to be traded.

So give him what he wants.  As Elway said today, “the only thing not up for sale is my wife and kids.”  lol.

  • King

    ‘thing’

  • DenverSportsArea

Funny how Denver gets rid of good players and not surprised.

  • Darwin

Gotta do what is good for next year and not necessarily this year.  Get what you can and hope the young guys get healthy and productive.

  • areferee

No, he went to Stanford.  :-)

  • Anonymous

My immediate reaction when the “rumor” broke a few days ago was this is an idiotic move. Then you see that he turned down an offer we made, asked for a trade, and was not going to be here next year. Yes 3 or 4 more good years would have been great, however, we would have had to give him a big contract and that is not in the Teams’ best interest. I hate to lose him but we got young guys that can play and need to be out there.

A conditional 6th round pick?  Come on!!!  Can we trade Tebow for a snowie day in December?

  • Anonymous

As opposed to nothing when the season ends a 6th round pick sounds good.

  • Anonymous

I really dont care for this trade thank God we got some compensation

  • anthony33

A fifth rounder (most likely)… you have to be kidding me!  For a pro bowl receiver to a team that deparately needs a receiver and all you get is the possibility of a stinking 5th rounder!  I was not opposed to TRADING BL given the total situation… but giving him away is just stupid.

Xanders is officially the new Matt Millen.  Piss poor negotiating skills.

  • King

You’re forgetting that LLoyd’ contract ends the end of this year.  A 5th rounder + is a good deal for someone who only has until the end of December on his contract.

The Rams traded for the short-term, we traded for the long-term.  Smart.

  • Hansen

And if Lloyd catches 30 passes this year the 6th turns into a 5th.  Preparing for the future.

  • crazykid

except it was a 5TH ROUND PICK!! A third or fourth is alright, but fifth? CHILD PLEASE!

  • Anonymous

    You sure it wasn’t Stamford?

  • gym nazium

Wow is McDumbA$$ still in charge????????????  Cant wait to see Miami kick Denvers a$$.  Now we have NO pass atack!  No one that can stretch the field!  Hey Miami play the run , you know Te-blow cant pass.  Who can we get rid of next? Lets make sure that it is someone that is productive.  I would hate to keep a crappy running back like (dances whit da starz) Morano…..

  • Anonymous

He was not going to re-up w/ us.  You get what you can now.  It’s the ONLY move when you’re rebuilding.  I can’t believe people are angry about this…

  • Gradishar53

Pretty damned sure it was Stamfurd!

  • areferee

    Mumford?

  • Nisse

i dont understand why we didnt use the $25M in free agency if we werent going to use it on lloyd

  • flbronc

so we trade a 9 year vet, who only has three seasons with over 500 rec yards, one pro bowl and 4 seasons with under 25 receptions (including 2 under 10) and people are reacting like we are dumping Larry Fitzgerald for a bag of jock straps?

come on guys.  Get real, he wasn’t going to stay and probably wont ever do what he did last year again.

  • areferee

“Broncos DT Ryan McBean arrested on stalking charges”

    Another McGoofball !

Maybe Bowlen and EFX should disallow McAnyone from being a Bronco!

  • Anonymous

You guys are both wrong, he went to Stan’s Ford

  • Dakota Fan

C’mon gang- regardless of what you think of EFX, there’s no such thing anymore as a trade steal. The Herschel Walker deal be damned, there’s a list of what you can get and what you can’t get for the guys you’re trying to deal. The value for a guy like Lloyd is like the value of a 1/2 ton pickup on a car lot that has over 100,000 miles on it. Shiny and purty, but has a lot of potential problems a few miles down the road because of its age. This proves to me more than ever that the draft, not high dollar free agency or trades, is how you build a winner. And its done in years, not in days.

Besides, does anyone see Brandon Lloyd being the missing piece of the puzzle that will take the Rams to this year’s Super Bowl? Or next year’s? He sure as hell wasn’t the missing piece that was going to take the Broncos there.

Another thought- is John Fox the transition coach in our team’s franchise? You know, get the team back to stability before signing the next coaching phenom to lead them back to glory? Didn’t see it written anywhere or anything, but Fox doesn’t strike me as a Belichick or a Bill Walsh. I like the guy and respect his experience, but don’t see him bringing Denver to the Super Bowl victories we’d like to see.

  • ronster

    Mr. Lloyd,
Thank you for your incredible play and dedication to the game.  Thank you for being a Bronco for a few years and giving it your all.  You have been exciting to watch.  Anything seems possible when you are downfield.  Thank you for being a role model off the field too.  We love TEAM players like yourself!  We wish you good luck with your next team.  We hope it brings you everything you deserve.  [However, we don’t actually want you to win games until you’re on a team other than McDaniels’.]
    sincerely,
    bronco fans

  • anthony33

Exactly my point.  I agree it makes sense to trade him for the RIGHT DEAL… this is not the right deal.  IMO.

  • anthony33

Great points Dakota Fan, I just think a pro bowler from last year, to a team in deaparate need, is worth more than a 6.  A GM proves his worth by drafting smart AND cutting better than average deals.

  • Matt

I have no problem with the move…just think that a 6th rounder was basically a give away.

  • 12508

I’ve been telling you XANDERS is a moron for three years. Can’t blame this one on McD. Clady is next. XANDERS believes Clady is too talented to be on this roster. Mr. BOWLEN is the new Al Davis. Next move for BOWLEN? Fire Fox and hire Joe Paterno. We need to get younger at head coach. It’s time for some blackouts in Denver. Don’t show up to these games.

  • Summerleaf

This is a GOOD move.  Brandon Lloyd is a nice receiver.  He had a great 2010 mostly because we were a freak team…nothing but passing.

But, he’s not particularly fast (a 4.6 out of college) and he’s no better than the 10th best in the league behind at least: Larry Fitzgerald, Roddy White, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Greg Jennings, Steve Smith, Mike Wallace, and Dwuane Bowe.  Lloyd is 30 and about to get very expensive.  As to the draft pick…older players don’t fetch high picks…they just don’t.

    Be happy. It’s good.

  • Strawdog

Wow. How do you squeeze so much wrong into so few lines?

  • Ron Rex

Just another example of the Broncos management not knowing how to build a team. Is anyone out there impressed with a single decision the Broncos have made in past two years? Yeah, I forgot, they’ve decided to start Tebow. Of course, that’s the time to trade a go to receiver!

Bolen, Elway and Fox all need to go….now!

    Good thing it’s Avalanche season!

    Ron Rex

  • 12508

You wanted to see what Tebow can do. Wouldn’t you want good players on the field to help him? Yes we could use some extra picks. Could have should have traded Kyle for a pick. We wanted a third for Kyle? Had to have a third for Kyle? Yet we just throw Lloyd away for a sixth. Everything XANDERS does is wrong. If you think decker,Thomas, and royal can get it done your nuts. Defense can put everyone in the box, blitz every down, and just make sure Tebow don’t beat you. I feel sorry for Tebow. He is going to look awful. No tight end help. No running game. Defense better be ready to spend a lot of time on the field. I can see the cramps coming in sunny Miami.

  • crazykid

How can ANY Denver fan like or even be comfortable with this deal?  We would have received at LEAST a 6th Round supplemental pick in the upcoming draft if we lost him in free agency (which we would have).

  • Strawdog

I think we’d be glad to trade Kyle.

BUT…someone has to have room for him…have a need for him…want him…be willing to pay him (at $8M this year he is expensive)…be willing to sign him to a long term contract…and be willing to part with a 2012 pick.  It may happen, but this is no easy do.

And yes. I do think Decker, Royal, Thomas, Willis, and Riley…not to mention our young stud tight ends…can get it done.  For years to come.

  • Anonymous

No one was was offering anything better.  Rumor was that they were getting 7th rd offers for him from other teams.  What would you rather do keep him until the end of the year and lose him for nothing?  It is not like he is the difference between us winning or losing.  Do you see us going to to the playoffs with him???   The fact is the right deal was never going to happen and we had to get rid of him before the trade deadline.

  • Skdog

This trade is hard to judge until next year once the draft pick is made or traded again? Right now it stings because BLloyd is the only real wr that produces for Denver?  There are receivers that have a chance to step up now, this is the year to see who can produce and who cannot? Face it. BLloyd wanted out, now he is out, I will miss watching his acrobatic catches!    .                                                                                                  P.S.. Anyone think the Raidahs are looking at any of our 2nd string QB’s ??

  • Skdog

I need to revise, Eric Decker is leading the Denver receivers in yards & TD’s, Lloyd is 2nd in yards & Zero TD’s.

  • Strawdog

In 2007, at the age of 30, Randy Moss was traded from the Raiders to the Patriots
for a 4th round pick. Randy freakin’ Moss. A fourth.A 3rd for Lloyd is nonsense.

    We did good.
