Tim Tebow, once wallowing in the deepest murks of the Denver Broncos depth chart, has ascended. Critiqued, criticized, admired and mired, the 2010 first round draft pick has risen above, both virtually and literally.

It wasn’t long ago that a report from Yahoo!’s Michael Silver quoted a “highly knowledgeable”  member of the Broncos organization, saying Tebow, if the decision were made purely on performance, should be the team’s fourth-string quarterback.

“If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy,” Silver’s source said. “Kyle [Orton] is far and away the best, and Tebow’s way behind [Brady] Quinn too. And I’m telling you, [fourth-string quarterback] Adam Weber is flat-out better right now.”

Yet, here we are. Less than seven weeks later, Tim Tebow has won the starting job. Kyle Orton has been benched; Brady Quinn remains benched; Adam Weber has been on the Broncos’ practice squad since the start of the season, and when the Denver Broncos starting offense’s huddle awaits their quarterback, Tim Tebow will stand alone.

So how did we get here? Is it massive, inconceivable organizational dysfunction that has seen Tebow rise from SportsCenter punchline to franchise quarterback in less than two months… or has Tim Tebow, admired and mired, truly earned this starting nod? Let’s break it down.

The best chance to win

We’ve heard head coach John Fox say it and players echo it countless times. “Kyle Orton gives us the best chance to win.” But when your team falls to 1-4 and 0-2 within the division at home, that argument largely flies out the window.

I’m not saying that the Broncos’ struggles were all Orton’s fault. Not hardly. But a large portion of responsibility deservedly falls on Orton’s shoulders, especially in two of the last three weeks.

To start the season, Kyle Orton truly was not part of the problem. It amazed me that the same fans who were clamoring for Tebow after the Week One loss were completely silent after the Week Two win against Cincinnati. Orton had no control of the Broncos defense’s ability to stiffen against the Bengals in the fourth quarter in Week Two, nor did he affect its inability to stop Darren McFadden the week before. Yet many fans made their cries for Tebow solely based on the Broncos’ Win-Loss record. I disagreed then, and I disagree now. This is not about wins and losses. This is about quarterback efficiency.

But in the last several weeks, Orton has not done enough to justify either argument. He’s not winning football games, and he’s not being efficient. He hasn’t had a truly good game in nearly a calendar year.

Meanwhile, the Broncos’ defense has made some small strides. The running game is back on track. The offensive line is healthy. The arguments used to excuse Orton’s inability to win are becoming less pertinent with each week.

Then, in Week Five, Tebow was given half of football to show he could operate a more successful offense than Orton. With less game-planning, less practice, and truly more pressure, he outscored Orton’s offense 14-3. That’s making the most of his opportunities, something Orton hasn’t done.

Ascending Brady Quinn

Some have asked where Brady Quinn falls into all of this. He was once clearly the Broncos’ No. 2 QB. By the start of the season, following a dreadful preseason performance in Arizona, he and Tebow were listed as co-backups, both No. 2.

While it may not be fair to judge Quinn’s performance against Cardinals first- and second-teamers to Tebow’s performance against third- and fourth-teamers, the production difference in that game was so jarring it’s hard to ignore. Quinn went 4 for 12 for 26 yards and an interception. Tebow completed 7 of 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Furthermore, Quinn has already had his chance as an NFL franchise quarterback. He’s also a young, recent first round draft pick, but his performances on the NFL field are a known commodity.

The Broncos have invested more and have more to gain in playing Tebow.

The potential is there

There was something about that Week 4 preseason game in Arizona that made me a believer in Tebow. I didn’t think he was ready (I wanted to wait until 2012), but I definitely believed he deserved a shot.

I know what that “something” was — it was the most impressive play I’ve seen Tebow execute in a Broncos uniform, or maybe any uniform. It was exactly what the Broncos want to see from their starting quarterback. And it happened with three minutes left in the fourth quarter (scroll to the one-minute mark).

Tebow dropped back, and a crowd of Cardinals defenders immediately surrounded him. Tebow didn’t run; he kept his eyes downfield. One player was well-covered; he checked-down. His eyes glanced to the flat before he recognized Eron Riley breaking free down the long sideline. Tebow immediately released and hit Riley in stride 50 yards downfield.

Touchdown Broncos. Something the Broncos hadn’t done in the 57 minutes before, largely with Quinn under center, Tebow executed to quarterback textbook perfection.

Tim Tebow showed me on that play that he is capable of executing an NFL pro-style offense. Maybe, with practice and experience, he can even excel at it.

He’s earned it

Tim Tebow wasn’t “gifted” a starting quarterback position; it’s true that those above him struggled, but Tebow did not when given the opportunity. His hard work and leadership are unquestioned, and he’s shown flashes of greatness on the football field.

It’s those tantalizing flashes that the Broncos hope to hone into consistent production at the quarterback position. The Denver Broncos hope to spend their next eleven games molding their quarterback of the future rather than struggling so they can draft one in April.

Tim Tebow has eleven games to earn sixteen more.

1-15!!!! WE WANT LUCK!!!! Thank god everyone is getting on board with tanking this season to get a real QB, and we all know the best way to lose games is to start Tebow.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Do we all know that? I didn’t.

  • Dante Pakistan

We should want Luck instead of Tebow

  • Anonymous

How much would the Broncos have to lose by giving each of them a shot? If Weber’s got the touch, give him a chance. Denver hasn’t been to the Super Bowl since Elway retired. Really, what is there to lose?

  • Anonymous

Starting QB is not the same as franchise QB.  Tebow has a way to go before he is anointed a franchise QB.  Tebow was the beneficiary of good field position on the first TD drive.  Prior to that Tebow produced 23 yards and 1 1st down the 3 previous drives.

  • Anonymous

Umm no.. Granted don’t get me wrong I would love to have Luck, but I bet you anything that Tebow has a better chance at winning more games than Orton does.  Orton may be a more accurate passer, but Tebow also has abilities that Orton sucks at such as mobility for one.  I am not saying that Tebow is our QOF, but to me I think we will score more points and be a better team under him.  If we wanted to “Suck for Luck” we would be better off leaving Orton in.

I would rather have a mobile QB than a statue like Orton who is afraid to take a hit playing for me anytime.

There are a ton of “can’t miss” prospects selling insurance policies out there.  Let’s see what the last 1st round QB can do before we are crying out for Luck.
BTW- Did anybody else notice Cutler threw a left handed pass last night?

  • Dante Pakistan

I thought Tebow looked awful on Sunday, I must not have been wearing my Tebow tinted glasses!

  • 12508

Give Cleveland a call and see what they want for Hillis. He is not going to sign with them and they will not franchise him. Put him in the backfield with Tebow and see what happens.

  • Anonymous

The Broncos unfortunately do not have any QBs with the talent required to be successful in the NFL. With Tebow though, they at least have a guy with a fire in his belly to compete and a desire to win. With Orton it’s painfully obvious that he’s only out there to collect a paycheck. I’m sure he is more than happy not to have to risk injury and still get paid. I hope Tebow proves me wrong.

  • Gradishar53

“Thank god everyone is getting on board with tanking this season to get a real QB…”  WRONG!  Tebow is a real QB, and you will be proven a fool on numerous levels!

  • Gradishar53

Or, understand a thing about football.

  • colorancher

I agree!!       This was a decision forced on the coaching staff and front office by the fans… It’s ridiculous!! Maybe we will change the offense to the wishbone..

  • colorancher

Do you remember who drafted the last 1st round QB?  Oh yea!!!!! How did he work out?

  • Aaronh3

Yea Tebow did it all himself.  He got the strip sack that put them with a short field.  I guess you didnt see all the short balls or the ball Loyd had to make a highlight reel catch to pull in.    My favorite is is run around and throw up a jumpball in the middle of the field.  Watch how many picks will come over this session.

  • SUCK4LUCK

SUCK FOR LUCK! Please god let us SUCK FOR LUCK!!!!

  • King

This decision was only “forced” by Orton’s play.

  • colorancher

Because are defense, offensive line,  special teams  are so good…Orton’s fault he can’t put up 25 points a game to keep up with the other teams..  Sure…  ( i am not a Orton fan anyway) But Tebow is not the answer.  Time will tell.

  • Anonymous

Sooooo….your entire argument is look who drafted him?  All I know is the 2nd first round pick hooked up with the 2009 first round pick for the 2nd touchdown, and the 2nd first round pick ran in the first touchdown…worked out pretty good that day.

  • Anonymous

    Wow…so many comments….too easy.

  • Anonymous

    Which session?

  • Anonymous

That’s kind of the point guy. Orton proved he wasn’t the answer and now Tebow has his shot to prove either way. Kind of what you want before you enter the 2012 draft.

  • Anonymous

    lol

  • 12508

2012 RB free agents. Foster, forte,Hillis,Peterson,Benson, and rice. Kyle please take Moreno with you.

  • 12508

Peterson got a new contract not sure about some of the others. I would be happy with Hillis.

Smartest thing I’ve read on here!!!! WE WANT LUCK!!

    Support, personnel, training.

It took John Elway fourteen years to find the right people around him so that he would not be embarrassed again.

    You’re giving Tim Tebow two weeks?  A little biography . . .

Tim Tebow contributed to the Gators’ 2006 college football season as a key back-up, helping the team win college football’s national championship game for the first time since 1996.

During the 2007 season, Tebow was Florida’s starting quarterback and became the first college football player to both rush and pass for 20 or more touchdowns in a single season and the first college sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy.

In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy, his 2007 performance earned him the Maxwell Award as the nation’s top football player, the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best quarterback and the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete in any sport.

In 2008, Tebow led Florida to its second national championship in three years. He was named the offensive MVP of the national championship game.

Tim Tebow is a winner.  He will do anything and everything to win.

He is no different than Matthew Stafford, or Cam Newton, or any other QB who finds a position in the NFL.  Do you really think it will be any different for Andrew Luck?

What our prize possession needs is 75,000 people screaming their lungs out and a team around him that has one goal only.  Not just a game or paycheck, but we have to WIN this game, no matter what.

BroncoNation needs to get back to a winning attitude!

  • Dante Pakistan

The love affair people have with Tebow makes me ill.

  • Anonymous

Do you have a point other than you worship at the alter of Tebow?  If you’re going to toss out biographies how do you square with this, Elway never lead his teams to a bowl game in college finished second for the Heisman his senior year yet nobody questioned Elways desire.  Furthermore there are plenty of Heisman winners who were NFL busts as well as national championship qb’s who were winners in college and NFL busts, Jamarcus Russell ring any bells?  How about Ryan Leaf?
You trot this stuff out like it means something yet the NFL is littered with busts who were college winners.

  • VinceMarine

I’m with you on that.  I would also have a QB with a passion, desire and fire to win games!  He wants to be the best and do whatever is necessary to get there.  That goes along way in my book!

  • Anonymous

Matthew Stafford and Tebow are NOTHING alike. For that matter neither is Newton and Tebow (not that Newton has proven anything at this point anyway).

What Tebow did in college really has no barring on the NFL game. Sure you can talk about intangibles and heart but that only gets someone so far. There are A LOT of ex-players with heart that never made a name for themselves.

I like Tebow. I don’t agree with everything he stands for but I love that the kid puts himself out there for what he believes in and he walks the talk.

I hope he does great, proves the critics wrong and locks himself down as our QB for the next 10 years.

His biography means jack squat to this point though and bringing it up only pisses his haters off more because it’s such an absurd argument for him.

  • Anonymous

Why do you trade anything for a player who is a free agent at the end of the season?  This isn’t hockey or baseball.

  • TinFL

Since you’re not a Bronco fan, go back to Oakland, KC, SD, and post your tripe there.

  • Chinod18

    Finally they start Tebow!!!!!
Its about dang time, Orton almost went 6-13 for 34yds and 3 Ints in this last game giving SD a 38pt lead, My question is what does Orton have to do to lose his job? seriously I keep hearing about how Orton is better, what is Denver and all these haters thinking. I just dont get the pure hatred for the kid, hes one of the greatest college QBs ever and has not been given a fair shot at this level.
In his 3 starts last season He was:41-82 for 654yds and 5 Tds and 3 Ints Rushing he had 43 Attempts for 227yds and 6TDS and 1 Fumble
Now if he played the whole season:205-410 for 3270yds and 25 Tds 15 Ints Rushing 215 Attempts for 1135yds and lets say 12 Tds and 5 Fumbles and I wont give him 30 rushing Tds, which is what simple math says Lol
Plus his leadership and passion are almost unrivaled by some of the best QBs in the game today and what I witnessed on Sunday was amazing, The fans, The team, even Fox stood there in disbelief.
Thats: 4405 total yds with 37 Tds Thats a superstar QB in his rookie season give him time and these numbers will improve!!!
I think the stats speak fror themselves and Stats don’t Lie!!! Go Tebow

    Who said I wasn’t a Bronco fan?

    That’s a XANDERS move!

  • Dante Pakistan

    Gotta love small sample sizes.

  • Anonymous

I hope the kid works out.  I don’t see it happening, but I hope it works out.

  • Troyn

Actually you did.  By pulling for the Broncos to suck for luck, you are rooting against the team. I have been calling for TT to be the starter all year, but have always rooted for the team and KO to succeed.  I just wasn’t blinded by some irrational hatred, I saw one QB who is nothing more than a backup, and one that has done nothing but make plays every time he’s been given a chance.  It’s time to find out if he is the guy, sink or swim.

  • Strawdog

So, if we were not using Von Miller to rush the passer
you would make the argument that what he did in college doesn’t matter?

No dude. What players did in college does matter. Yes,
there are absolutely differences in the college and pro game…and in no way
does college success guarantee pro success.  But is it an indicator?  Does it matter that Tebow was not just pretty
good…but one of the best college players ever?  Hell yes.

  • Rob Bronco

I’m so f’n tired of hearing about the quest for Luck. First of all, we aren’t going to get Luck.  There are a few other teams out there that will finish worse than the Broncos and they’ll be looking for a franchise QB.  Second, STFU about Tebow and just let the guy play.  If he sucks, he sucks.  But what do you expect EFX to do – keep playing Orton? Orton has clearly checked out.

Say what you will about Tebow but the guy has an unbelievable will.  He may not be our QB of the future but he sure as hell is the best option we have right now.

  • crazykid

    or go back to “Pakistan”

Wow! You are really not helping to prove yourself in the smarts department if that is the smartest thing you have read on here.

Sweet thats twice now that you and I have said the same thing… Amazing! Several months ago I’d never seen that coming…lol.

  • Anonymous

Nothing more I’d like to see than Chris Carter and Merril Hodge have to eat every word they’ve said, throw up, and eat them again.

I WANT the kid to do well and prove the nay sayers wrong, but truly don’t know if he has what it takes.  I know he has passion and only one thing will matter to him when he steps on that field and that is WINNING.  Others will follow.  It’s going to be fun to watch… good, bad or indifferent.  We’ll know and so will the everyone else.

I have not been this excited to watch them play in quite some time.

    Best wishes TT.

    Amen…

Article lost all credibility when he says Tebow will increase fan attendence.  Doesn’t this clown the Bronx have sold out for something like 30 straight years?  Maybe he was thinking Miami.   I guess you could cut down on the no-shows, but that’s just a rounding error in the financials.

  • Anonymous

Agree.  I am not convinced he will make it, but sincerely hope he does.

  • Greg from Idaho )

Tebow…..waite a second….wasn’t he a third string QB. That and he can’t throw. Never a word about why Brady Quinn is even on the team as the 2nd string QB and being passed over, hell I thought he was better than Ortan hears a who anyhow. Quinn that is. Makes no sence to start T boy until you give the 2nd string guy a chance, why even have strings 1,2,3,4 ect then?  The soulution is the draft next year. Not Luck from stanford, but Kellen More out of Boise State. Smart and functional kid. Trade Tebow and Orten and get this kid More who is a lefty by the way as well.Â
