Tim Tebow, Donald Butler

John Fox finally did it. He made the switch.

Now the question is whether the switch will stick. One might assume benching Kyle Orton for Tim Tebow at halftime in the Denver Broncos‘ 24-29 loss to the San Diego Chargers would mark the end of one QB era in Denver and the beginning of another.

Not so fast, says Fox. The Broncos want to assess the performance of each quarterback before deciding either way.

“We haven’t had a chance to watch the tape,” Fox said. “We haven’t had a chance to watch the film; we haven’t had a chance to visit as a staff, so I think at this point — we have a bye week — we do need to improve offensively, and it will all be up for discussion.”

Do you really believe a return to Kyle Orton is possible after the way the two quarterbacks played? I’m having a hard time believing Fox could come to that conclusion, especially if it’s game tape based. Look, clearly Tebow has accuracy issues. Clearly his ability to stand in the pocket and deliver the football is a heart attack-inducing affair on any given play. Yet, undeniably, Tim Tebow sparked the offense, defense, and fans with his near-comeback theatrics. In my opinion, there’s no way the Broncos revert to Orton now.

should trade Orton now so tebow can beat him in two weeks @ MIAMI!

  • Anonymous

Can’t trade him because he refuses to back off of his contract demands, that is what killed the deal in the preseason.  His price tag is too high to even give him away it would seem so now we will need to deal with a divided locker room or an angry fan base.

  • rcsodak

Start TT and wear out the pass rush, then bring in Orton.
Honestly, if you watched the game, orton had nobody to throw to. When he did, they dropped it. And he was always a step from being stripped and/or sacked. Lloyd made a fantastic catch on the sidelines and Fells found a hole in the middle of the field when they were in the prevent. Luckily, moreno turned that short pass into a score.
I’m waiting to hear the “tim came in cold is why his passes were off/short” excuses. Lol

I don’t see how running that kind of offense helps Tebow develop as an NFL QB.  We alredy knew he could run Florida’s spread.

The question is can he run an NFL offense that ISN’T designed solely to make him look competent?

  • Anonymous

Tebow has playing-time escelators in his contract.  That has to be taken into consideration as well.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I doubt Miami (or any team) would trade for Orton.

If they want him, they can sign him as a free agent after the season.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

The escalators that he would get by finishing the season are so minimal that I really doubt they’ll have anything to do with the Broncos decision making.

  • NMBronc-in-DC

And this is why he needs to play.  If he can’t, then we draft a QB.  We need to see what we have in Tebow, as the team is going nowhere this year and Orton is a disaster.

  • virginiabronco

    absolutely spot on NM!

I have been an ardent Orton supporter, as far as he is the right QB to start on this team right now.  What I saw in the first half yesterday was a dismayed and defeated QB.  The qualities he brings to this team (accuracy and good decision making), are not showing through anymore.  He’s emotionally done as a Bronco and it shows.  Sure receivers were covered, sure the o-line wasn’t keeping the pocket clear, but that is going to happen to any QB we put in there.  If Orton isn’t going to win any games, we might as well have a QB that is exciting to watch and will answer questions about the long term health of our team.  Is Orton a better QB than Tebow? I would say yes.  Is everyone reading this blog at least as accurate throwing the jump-hook scrambletasim, I think that guy is on my team, pass.  Probably.  Are we going to learn more about our team and our future loosing with Tevow than with Orton.  Without question.  Unfortunately the time has come, and I think John-John knows it.

On the bright side, we will either know we have a real product with Timmy, and/or have a real shot at Luck.

  • virginiabronco

It seemed to me at least for a half, that the offense seemed to rally around Tebow.  Maybe, just maybe, all this talk of a divided locker room is exaggerated a bit?  Bottom line is winning cures all this stuff.  If Tebow can demonstrate some on field leadership and get a win or two then things might fall into place. IF he continues to lose and miss open receivers then it won’t take long until the fan base turns on him too.  KO had three years.  Lets at least give Tebow a couple of weeks.  At least we know on third and 6, that he might try to run for a first down. I don’t see any down side to Tebow playing at this point.  If the organization finds he is not up to the challenge then Elway and company need to find a QB for the future. He TEbow can prove his critics wrong, then that is one piece of the Bronco puzzle solved as we look to the future.  I see no downside.

It’s a $1.5M bump if he takes 45% of the snaps.  I wouldn’t consider that “minimal.”

  • virginiabronco

    well said dog

  • Anonymous

Hey, I like Tebow playing (not a basher or a “minion”) he adds an element of excitement. The locker room will have division, just like when Griese went in, just like when Cutler went in. Orton is not injured and will be on the sidelines and in the locker room every week, that poses a problem. Winning does cure many woes, I agree totally unfortunately QB is not the only problem. I figure even if Tebow goes three and out, if he runs around for ten seconds every play the defense will get more rest. :-)

Per Klis in the DP last week:

“Tebow does have a bonus tied to playing time
in his contract, but it’s hardly prohibitive. It’s called a “one-
timer” clause, which in his case is a relatively affordable $472,500…

… the “one-timer” is executed when Tebow plays 45 percent of the plays this season, 2012, 2013 or 2014.”

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

There’s a $472,500 bonus if Tebow plays 45% of this year’s snaps and wins however many games. He’d have to first win a bunch of games before we even talk about him getting an escalator.

    With a $120.374 million 2012 salary cap, I’d say a giving a QB a $472,500 bonus for winning such-in-such games is minimal.

  • Broncoscountrymx

Dog, you saved me a long text. 100% agreed.

  • Shipgw

Who says Luck can be an NFL QB?

  • Anonymous

I would say with the O-Line’s pass blocking that Tebow is probably the best QB for the job, 3 yard rushes trumps -5 yard sacks everyday.  We are going to see (if he is now the starter) Tim looking at his first and second options and if they aint open, run.  This is what he does, so roll out passes, screens, and broken plays will be the norm, I am all for it.  McGahee does not make that two point conversion if Orton is in the game, somebody has to spy Tebow.  His mere presense opens up the run game as well as helps the tight ends get open.  Yes his game must improve, but it is better to watch him running around than Orton falling down.

  • flbronc

the same guys that said ryan leaf was a can’t miss prospect.

  • akbronco

The locker room will be fine. Every player is being paid to play. If they can’t deal with the changes to try and turn this team around then they can be replaced…simple as that

  • Anonymous

Well…here’s Klis from when the contract was announced:

Tebow collects $1.537.5 million if he plays 35 percent of the offensive snaps in 2010, or 45 percent of the snaps in any of the seasons 2011-14. The bonus rolls over from year to year until Tebow reaches the playing-time threshold, and expires the first time he hits it.

Maybe something has changed.  That’s the number I found, though.

Every single college and pro analyst on the face of the planet.

  • akbronco

maybe tim came in a bit cold, rusty or for whatever you want to call it.

But just maybe not having any practice with the first team at all since he has been in the NFL. Only been in the NFL since last year, Only started in 3 games and you are going to hold that against him?

Lets see, your Ort has done nothing but fail, uninspire, lack leadership, pout on the sidelines when pulled and lets not forget about the excuses you stated such as “had nobody to throw to”, “they dropped it” and “he was always a step from being stripped or sacked”.

Wow, and your waiting to hear excuses for tim?  Now that is laughable. Lol

  • Anonymous

You get paid to do your job, however, I am betting you have an opinion about what changes your boss makes. As a Manager I have to make sound decisions based on business needs and yet balance that with making sure morale is good. I have to think with today’s athletes generally only worried about themselves and their opinions that yes they will play and say the correct things to the press, but no, there will be a strain in the locker room. I pointed out two recent examples which apparently were dismissed with the “they are professionals” mentality. If Tebow starts whipping out some great performances then you are correct, the locker room will be fine, if not…the background noise will get louder.

are we going to give tebow 2 years to work with this team or a game or two? We wasted 2 years with ort and 4 games this year for no reason. I would hope we at least give tim this year and next before we decide on our future qb.

  • Anonymous

Yeah…if they actually run the offense.

If they run the same plays they ran yesterday and ran for him last year, he won’t develop and he’ll never get better.

  • me

um no. if we have the chance at Andrew Luck, he has to be taken regardless. kinda like how the Chargers took Phillys Rivers when they already had Drew Brees. Tebow needs so much work its not even funny. he makes Vince Young look like Roger Staubach. where as Andrew Luck can come in and not have to learn how to throw in the  NFL. and if Tebow is SOO good then someone will pony up a nice high draft pick right? so we can trade Tebow for this nice high draft pick, you know since Tebow is so good, and we will an Elite QB prospect (something Tebow isnt) and a nice high pick. if we take luck and Tebow works out then we trade Luck for a nice high pick.

  • Anonymous

Who says any QB will translate to the NFL? If you want a known commodity go get Manning or Rodgers or Big Ben or Brady.  Or you can draft with the best knowledge possible and a bit of luck (no pun intended).

Don’t worry, no matte who we have QBing in any year, we will have faults to bemoan.

  • me

wow you are retarded. dont let your Tebow bis get in the way of actually watching Luck play and all his evaluations when it comes to running a pro style offense, which he is doing now and running it perfectly.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I think Klis was wrong when the contract was first announced (like so many contracts announcements are).

  • Anonymous

The players are always going to say they back the starter unless you have a T.O. or someone like that on the team. From the play the last two weeks however, it looked like the team kind of quit on Orton.

It also looked like they rallied around Tim. I’m sure there are going to be a few guys that are upset about the change. Kyle is a good guy and he has some close friends on the team. Overall though, I’m guessing the change to someone who at least “shows” more heart and enthusiasm is going to be quite welcome.

  • Anonymous

Don’t you get tired of making up new excuses for Orton every week? Sometimes I wonder if you are Orton haha. Seriously though, I do.

  • Anonymous

I agree…to a point. I don’t think the team quit on Orton. With His style of play if it ain’t there he will throw it away, or take the short outlet pass, which is what QB’s are taught to do. I think the offense kind of got used to the “maybe next series” attitude, got too used to playing it safe. Tebow plays every down like it is the last play of the game and everybody else does too when he is in. Tebow will make fantastic “wow” plays but he will also break your heart, as coach Fox said, two different offenses when they are in the game. I would rather be yelling at the TV than falling asleep waiting for Von to get another sack.

Agreed. They’re going to have to make some changes, and frankly, I have zero trust in McCoy’s competence.   I think he’s a ‘play caller’ only.  I don’t see his putting D’s at disadvantages by his ‘packages’.

    Show me where I’m mistaken.

1Te.  Lloyd. 2nd yr decker.  PS willis.
Their strength has become their weakness.

Manusky was asked their gameplan, and he said ‘tp get orton out of his comfort zone/out of the pocket/out of sync.  Mission accomplished.
I was about asleep watching TT throw worm-killers and fumbled snaps (that he worked ALL SUMMER ON).  Was excited for his runs and 3 lucky completions.
This team was uninspired.  We’ll see how they come out in 2wks.

    Jury is still out, here.

Actually TT looks like Roger Staubach, ask Dan Reeves.  Tebow’s chance is now, unless Fox screws the pooch and goes to Orton again.  All TT has done when he’s been in games is make plays, amazing the criticism of every missed throw.

  • TinFL

Tim Tebow contributed to the Gators’ 2006 college football season as a key back-up, helping the team win college football’s national championship game for the first time since 1996.

During the 2007 season, Tebow was Florida’s starting quarterback and became the first college football player to both rush and pass for 20 or more touchdowns in a single season and the first college sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy.  In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy, his 2007 performance earned him the Maxwell Award as the nation’s top football player, the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best quarterback and the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete in any sport.

In 2008, Tebow led Florida to its second national championship in three years. He was named the offensive MVP of the national championship game.

And I had a long talk with Ted Sundquist about this on Twitter (well, as long a talk as you CAN have on Twitter). He said never in his years as GM did escalators ever factor into playing time. Bowlen wants to win.

Yep as well as Brian Mitchell, David Carr, David Klingler and Akili Smith and they all pretty much sucked, bad. And many many more… All the teams that drafted these guys thought they were going to get the next Golden Boy. A couple of these guys might have been good in different places.

Generally speaking I would think that players dread risking their careers in crap holes that are called teams some times as well. But the real ones, with some help, make those teams the next team to beat. Scary true enough, but kind of fun to watch either way from afar…lol.
