This video of Tim Tebow on ESPN’s Outside the Lines is actually a few weeks old, but I hadn’t seen it yet, so I thought perhaps some of you had missed it as well. In it, OTL spends 10 minutes interviewing those around Tebow, discussing why the Denver Broncos QB is so, well, discussed.

“From some of the Christian fans, it’s as though if you criticize Tim Tebow’s throwing motion, you’re trying to trash Christianity,” author Tom Krattenmaker says in the video.

With the Broncos presumably on the precipice of handing over their season, and possibly their franchise, to Tim Tebow, now seems as appropriate a time as any to examine the positives and negatives surrounding this outspoken Christian proponent.

Wow, apparently I am going to hell. That’s a buzz kill.

    PAGEVIEWS!!

    you haz them?

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I don’t get why people say they hate Tebow for “Preaching at me and trying to shove his faith down my throat.”  From what I can tell, Tebow’s never done that, he’s just answered questions honestly, how can you fault him for that?

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Maybe it’s the deity-like way his face magically appears in a post about him??

(Inside joke… I wrote the post but didn’t add the picture. I think Jon did, lol).

  • Davidl413

Great piece by ESPN. The Tebow haters have it wrong. He’s not telling anybody how to live their lives, and he’s not cramming a message down anybody’s throat. He’s merely sharing his own faith and how it’s transformed his life. As Urban Meyer points out, after people are exposed to his message it’s their choice whether they give it a “thumbs up or thumbs down.” Nobody has to agree with him. I understand that most people don’t want to be told how to live. However, if they hate Tebow so much I don’t know why they can’t just ignore him. I don’t get the blatant hatred.

  • Anonymous

I fault him for saying I’m going to hell if I don’t believe in what he believes in.

  • douglas

maybe you will, but it isnt Tebow`s fault.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

He didn’t tell you that, he was telling an orphanage that invited him to come in speak.  It was recorded and you chose to watch the video (I assume knowing what it was going to be about — Kyle mentioned it before the video), he didn’t shove it down your throat, you had the choice not to listen to what he had to say.

But you did listen (watch) and you didn’t like what you heard. It’s a free country, we don’t have to agree with everyone else. But we don’t have to fault them either for disagreeing with our opinions.

  • jrodz19

Jon has it right. He really is only answering the questions asked of him. Maybe you can fault him for taking the bait, but he’s what? 23 years old?  The real disconnect with this – as in most of the Tebow stories – are the non-football people they get for sound bites that cloud the issue on the criticism. Hodge didn’t “Trash talk him for being a bad person” – he said he’s a bad NFL QB. The fact that he’s 3rd string pretty much tells us that. The USA Today fool anointing him “Almost a saint” is what should be pissing Tim Tebow off! I give the Bronco brass credit for keeping him around. Pretty sure Fox & Elway would not have drafted him in the first round or any round for that matter. Hell, they would still have Cutler & Marshall on the team! Our fans should REALLY be upset about what McDaniels left us with. A overhaul at the QB position is the only real fix. It’ll be a long road…and it most likely won’t involve Tim Tebow.

Because we live in a country where we have freedom of religion but the angry people feel it should be freedom FROM religion.

  • Janetm12520

If a person feels threatened by what he says it is because their conscience is telling them something.  If a Muslim, (no offence to anyone out there), decides to rely on his faith to motivates him whether it be sports or helping others, who am I to judge? I can agree or disagree, it is ultimately MY choice. This is a free nation and we do have freedom of speech and religion. If you listen to it. you choose to do do. Otherwise turn it off.

  • Anonymous

Tebow cannot be ignored if you’re a bronco fan.

  • Anonymous

But it’s ok for him to be shoving his opinion down the kids at the orphanages throat?

And by making a pro-life ad during the super bowl wasn’t forcing his view at people??

  • Anonymous

You got the perfect storm here.

  • Aaronh3

I sure hope they dump him soon. Another terrible move made by Mcstupid.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I can’t read an article that doesn’t have any pictures, it’s the artistic side of me.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

This is just my opinion, but I didn’t feel he was shoving it down their throats, and again, I think the orphanage knew what he was going to talk about.

On the Super Bowl ad, I don’t think Tebow said really anything (he just talked to his mom if I remember correctly). His mom was the one that did the talking and she just said how she was happy that her baby survived and that she’s proud of the man he’s become, nothing wrong with that (IMO)

  • Anonymous

He told a group of impressionable kids they will go to hell if they do not accept Christ as their savior. Jon come on man.  I respect your opinions on this blog, you know football.  But just because Tebow is a Bronco doesn’t mean you have to stick up for him when he is wrong. Do you stick up for Perrish Cox?

  • King

Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.  Christ said the same thing.

  • http://thingsatrexdoes.tumblr.com Mike Birtwistle

I’ve got to the point now where I really don’t care about him anymore.  I spent last year wishing we hadn’t picked him, then when he played I was impressed and looked forward to seeing him this year.  Now I just want EFX to draw a line under this – release them all and draft a QB with the first pick next year.

Even if they play him for half a dozen games and Tebow turns out to the be the next coming of Elway, there will always be controversy.  People will always dislike him and people will always worship him – no matter what he does.  Its a distraction a losing team doesn’t need and let’s face it with the defense needing at least another two drafts to get back to being competitive in all areas, losing is something we’re going to do for a while.

  • http://thingsatrexdoes.tumblr.com Mike Birtwistle

Religion is like a penis – good that you’ve got it, i’m happy that you’re proud of it, but for the love of God – don’t take it out in public and don’t try and shove it down my kids throat.

  • oldfan

All you friggin idiots out there bashing Tebow most likley have never played the sport. I for one want the best team they can put on the field & I could care less what his views are. Another thing I can’t understand is how the
hell all these people can say he will never be worth a hoot when they haven’t givin him a shot! Let the kid play, if he doesn’t make it then bash him. what I see in him is a kid with tallent and a lot of heart that can be very entertaining. I don’t know what games you guys watched last year but at least I was able to watch untill the end of the game thinking we had a chance, something we don’t have with Orton!! If we are down in the 4th I shut off the tube and go do somthing else. LOOK AT ORTONS RECORD then tell me who you want to play.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I don’t stick up for Perrish Cox. But your right, this is a football blog. Maybe we should stick to talking football.

  • AtomicLeo

I think Tim will be very disappointed when he dies and meets the flying spaghetti monster.

  • King

Either he’s right or you are.  We shall see.

  • Anonymous

No. We will never see.  That’s the beauty of organized religion.  You can neither prove nor disprove it.  That’s how they make money off of fairly tales.

  • Ryan

The irony Jim_Jebow is that your being a hypocrite of forcing your view “that no one should be allowed to share their view with others” view onto Tebow and people that disagree with you.

So what gives you the right to force that view on Tebow or anyone else?  Talk about intolerant.  Who is to say that your view of no view sharing is right?  Last time I checked there is freedom of religion and speech and Tebow is allowed to SHARE what he believes.  Forcing is the idea that someone is being punished or harmed for not accepting it.  So if you can show me one person who Tebow has “forced” to his views than I will concede the point.

BTW, I don’t even like Tebow and think he is a grease fire at QB.  But the dude has not shared his Christian views anymore than Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford or Kurt Warner.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

You don’t hire somebody to speak unless you know what they are going to offer.  For all you know that could have been a Catholic orphanage and the felt that Tim was an excellent way to provide insight and inspire.

You don’t bring in Lance Armgstong to talk about Obama’s new Jobs bill. You bring him in to talk about Livestrong and cancer.

Furthermore, we live in a free country that provides the protection of free speech and the freedom of expression.  The Superbowl ad was an advertising spin and a play on words.  The never said anything other than “celebrate life”, which could be interpreted in a number of different ways.

Congruently, you have to choice to believe anything you want to.  You don’t have to watch, read, say, do, or think about anything that you don’t want to.  You can form your own ideas and opinions without being influenced by anyone.

Tim Tebow is just passionate about what he believes in and feels that he doesn’t need to hide it from anybody.  If you ask him about you – you, the person that had the choice NOT to – then you are voluntarily asking someone who is passionate about something to ram it down your throat.  You don’t see Tim Tebow out in public with a sign or microphone telling you how to live your life.

The bottom line is – no matter what, where, how, and why you believe in something – you have the choice of whether or not it affects you.  Plus, if you really stand at the water cooler and talk about how much it bothers you that Tim Tebow (or anybody else for that matter) bothers you for being passionate about something… you should (1) get back to work, and (2) get out more.

Sharing your view is one thing, but telling a bunch of kids in another country that if they don’t accept Jesus they will spend the afterlife getting flaming pineapples shoved up their colons is another thing.  I have no problem with people praying during games.  I have no problem with people showing their faith. But Tebow takes it to the next level.  He is abusing his celebrity.
As far as showing you one person who Tebow has “forced” his views on, watch the video.  Those kids in the orphanage are being forced to listen to Tebows message.  His orphanage forces their view of Christ on these kids who have no where else to go.  This is forcing a view. Check and Mate.
Here is the Tebow website where they proudly talk about how they brainwash these poor kids

” You don’t see Tim Tebow out in public with a sign or microphone telling you how to live your life.  ”

I’m pretty sure have bible verse’s on your eye paint is telling people how to live their lives.  I’m pretty sure a super bowl ad watched by a billion people is an attempt at telling people not to have abortions.  If it was not worded that way, that was because CBS would not let them use stronger terminology.  If CBS would have allowed it, Tebow would have said more.  He abuses his celebrity

  • jrodz19

Simple solution to this whole debate: Let’s face it, none of us could play QB if we hadn’t had sex yet & we were his age. Release the hounds and watch this guy light it up!

  • Anonymous

Tell you what buddy, instead of bashing an openly evangelical family for opening an orphanage and preaching to these poor kids, why don’t you and your family open an orphanage and teach them your views…I am all for it, I was stationed in the Philippines and these kids could use your atheistic teaching too.  The Tebow family has spent decades doing (literally) life saving work, while risking their lives in the largely Muslim Mindanao Province getting these kids off the streets and into a loving and safe environment.  Look past your hate and realize that these are good people doing a good thing.

  • King

Evolution is the true adult fairy tale.  You are certainly free to believe you originated from primordial soup.  I choose not to.

  • Anonymous

“I’m pretty sure have bible verse’s on your eye paint is telling people how to live their lives.”   No, you can look up the verse if you wish or you can ignore it…

“I’m pretty sure a super bowl ad watched by a billion people is an attempt at telling people not to have abortions.”  They told the story of what happened to their family and maybe you should think before having an abortion…really not that offensive.
Abuse of celebrity is thinking you should get away with breaking the law, or being rude, or putting yourself before others, because you are you.  They were spokespeople for an organization and he wrote verses that meant something to him.  While I admire your conviction to believe in nothing, hate religion, and limiting free speech…I respectfully disagree.

So the world is 6000 years old, then?

  • Ryan

I am not even a Christian but BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!  I am sure those orphaned kids would rather here Tebow’s religious story and get food, clothing, and shelter than not.  TD30 is right, better they here about Jesus than be forced to deal with your apathy.  Tebow make be concerned about their souls, but is also putting food in their mouth and medicine in their bodies.  Besides, none of these kids are being “forced” to believe in Jesus, or they will have their food and shelter taken away.  You can’t prove that the kids did not WANT to listen to Tebow.

  • 12508

We should all pray for the first pick in the draft. Pray to the football gods that we don’t win more than two games. Get Luck and build around him. Tebow might be good but give me the can’t miss. We have no shot at the playoffs this year. Four wins does nothing for me. Play Tebow NOW and see what he has. I doubt he has the goods but I pray that I’m wrong. Another long year for a Broncos fan.

Well, you are going to hell if you don’t believe…

  • 7th commandment

So, you think killing innocent, unborn babies is not a HUGE sin?

  • hello24

wow Jim jebow has some issues Tebow is not abusing his celebrity status hes at an orphanage his family built. YOu didn’t have to watch that video. What about the Mormon orphanages and someone telling those kids what they believe or catholic or jehovahs witnessess or baptist or whatever kind of church. Like the other dude said at least those kids have food and clothing and a place to sleep. Are you doing anything to help children or anybody for that matter. Everybody acts like that tv ad during the super bowl was so awful and I find it ridiculous. Don’t you have anything better to do then talk about this video over and over and over again. You don’t like tebow we get it. Now shut the Eff up MOther Effer

  • Archemides

I don’t recall a lot of religious bias directed at Reggie White when he was playing.  When he signed with Green Bay he said God told him to go there, and used to say “here comes Jesus” when the ball was snapped.  He also became an ordained minister and used to share the podium with Billy Graham.   Where was all of this phony outrage then?  All of you anti-Tebow Trolls act like Tebow is the first athlete to ever share his religious beliefs and somehow that is unfair you.  Hating someone because you cannot control your own impulsive anger is childish.

  • Archemides

There you go just give up and quit because YOU can’t take it anymore.  That’s a winning attitude.   Get a damn backbone and stand up to the Anti-Tebow Trolls.  They’re the ones causing the controversy.  The right thing to do is to be fair and objective, and give him a chance, not cave in to a bunch of idiots.  If they weren’t whining about Tebow they’d be whining about something else.

  • Archemides

You need to do a lot less talking and a lot more listening.

The problem is that these kids have no choice but to sit there and be indoctrinated w/ their beliefs because these CHILDREN have NOWHERE ELSE TO GO.  It’s the ultimate captive audience.  And it’s full of impressionable CHILDREN who don’t and can’t know any better.

If they were helping orphans just to help them, great.  But they’re helping these kids to further their own agenda.   Nisse is right.  He takes it a little too far, but he’s right.

This is how the fundies do it…get ’em early when they’re too stupid to know any better.Â
