The Denver Broncos had several opportunities to put the Tennessee Titans away in the fourth quarter. They just simply could not get it done.

The first near game-clincher was a bold fourth down call by head coach John Fox early in the fourth quarter. Fox called Willis McGahee‘s number on 4th and Goal from the one yard line, but McGahee was stuffed for the third straight play. The Broncos could have taken a seven-point lead with a field goal — all other things being equal, that would have sent the game to overtime.

Instead McGahee was stuffed. The turnover on downs gave the home team just enough momentum to make the difference.

While they had a lot of trouble on third downs, the defense played a phenomenal game overall, holding Chris Johnson to 21 yards on 13 carries (1.2 avg.). But the chinks in the armor were found with minutes left in the game as Matt Hasselbeck followed a 54-yard completion with a five yard touchdown toss to former Broncos tight end Daniel Graham. The Titans took the lead.

Then Kyle Orton‘s fourth quarter drive ended with a tipped ball being picked off. Orton executed a game-winning drive in Tennessee with 1:33 left in the game a year ago — he was picked off with nearly the exact same game clock this time around.

Kyle Orton CHOKE in the fourth quarter? Not so shocking!!!! That like saying the sky in blue and the grass is green.

  • Run for Luck

Another typical Kyle Orton performance… choke when it matters.  It’s just simply amazing, yet puzzling, he gets to keep his starting job games after games like this.

  • Scottkliesen

Easy to second guess decision to go for it, but I agreed with decision.  Would’ve thrown it, but no guarantees there either.  Team is very mediocre and always will be with Orton at the helm.

  • CJ

throw in tebow then draft luck

  • bostonianbronco

I’m glad no one has thrown the defense under the bus on this one yet… they played well and should have easily been good enough to win. 14 points won’t win you too many ball games and giving up 17 points should win you plenty. But same old story here.. offense couldn’t give the defense a break. Probably not all Ortons fault but he’s the leader and he didn’t get it done.
I don’t mind the 4th down call either. Easy to second guess fox now, but if you still give up a touch down to the titans it’s 17 to 17 with orton once again trying to win it. My guess, the same result… a pick then a game winning field goal. So I have no problem with fox trying to win the game right there and go up by two scores. Just sucks the decision is based out of lack of confidence in your offense.

The wisdom of the “old school” philosophy of keeping an immobile QB in the game with 1st and goal and running consecutive runs up the middle rather than inserting a QB like Tebow and spreading the alignment wide to open up pass/run possibilities has surpassed traditional conservatism to the point of clear stupidity. (IMHO)

Whether you are a fan of Tim Tebow or not, how many out there still maintain that keeping the “starter”, Orton in the game in that situation gave us a better scoring opportunity, rather than putting Tebow in to open up the scoring chances?

Saying Orton gives us the better chance to win in that singular scoring situation is just insane and there is only ONE MAN to be held accountable for this continued intransigence.  Fox is a good coach, but his game is falling as short in these situations, as is the QB to which he is remaining falsely loyal.

He is slowly eroding the loyalty of the fans, in my opinion, and if it sustains, he will begin to lose the players, as well, beginning with the defense, who played well enough to win this game.

How long will it take for Orton to prove his red-zone impotence to John Fox, before a better decision is made at times like this, when victory hangs in the balance?  We must start using ALL of our assets, and be damned with old-school tradition and hyper-conservative coaching.  We have got to win the close ones, while we have the chance.

If you agree, click “Like”; if not, give me hell in the comments.

No Von Miller shout-out? C’MON MAN! Second sack, second forced fumble I’m very excited about this young man!

Very well said.  Trying to think of something intelligent to add, but you said it all.

Vic Lombardi:  “I’ve watched enough of 8’s games to say this: Whatever that playmaker gene is, he doesn’t have it.”

There is nothing else left to say.

And in the NFL, “close ones” are about 80% of the games.  Foxball at it’s worst and his indefatigable insistence to stick with his “veteran” QB.

Excuse me while I go regurgitate.

we only had one penalty right?  that’s a HUGE improvement.

  • Gwb4u

Can’t agree with 4th & 1 call! At home, ok! On the road take the points from the field goal. Then it takes two scores to win. It changes the way the game is played. Of course the D still needs to get a stop and it didn’t, but can’t hand this loss on the D. Or ton doesn’t make anyone better around him and this is his last year no matter what – therefore it’s becoming Tebow Time. Fox has been loyal to Orton so there will be no rebellion in the locker room and Orton has been Orton. Advice, let’s move on and see what the future holds!

  • Gwb4u

Still lost, but not because of stupid penalties…. That’ a good improvment.

  • Fan From Spain

Only let the other team score 17 points and you still lose… Props to the D for such an improvement with a first year coordinator. The Titan’s D is no joke either but it’s just another classic Bronco loss, choke in the 4th quarter.

Yes only 1 penalty i think, that’s a sing of good coaching for sure. The wins will come eventually, this team is a threat even when not healthy.

  • AtomicLeo

I’m not a fan of any of the QBs. Orton is the best of bad choices. I want to see the FO dump all three this off season and start over.

  • Noskills07

Its simple, Yes Kyle Orton didn’t get it done YET again but I fully put this one on John Fox. For one, on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 you MUST try to apply Tebow in the mix and secondly if he is not one of your options in that spot you should have for sure kicked the field goal. Two bad decisions in a couple plays makes me really question John Fox. This to me, was a must win game no doubt about it (I just want a shot at the division) and the farther we spread ourselves from missed chances to win games is what STINKS the most. I will say this though gotta love Von Miller, and the D. Hopefully next week we can pull off a W < 50-50 on that.

  • AtomicLeo

Tough loss! I saw a lot I liked:

Miller had another sack and a forced fumble. He looked more disciplined this week not over running plays.

Defense is coming together and working like a team. I love the gang tackling.

Defense held a team that physically dominated the Ravens to 17 points and one of the premier runners under 100 yards.

Losing by less than a TD. Yes, losing sucks, but we are in games and we aren’t getting blown out.

    What I didn’t like:

The offense again could not match the play of the defense, although they looked much better than they had all season. It just fell apart in the 4th.

Ugh the running game. Was glad to see Magahee but man we need a speed demon to match his north-south run style. Hate to say it but the best outside runner we have Tebow.

And speaking of Tebow, I think it’s telling that Tebow hasn’t seen anytime in the goal line packages. I think the trick plays with Tebow have been banned from the play book. That 4th and goal would have been a great time to put him in.

  • Bryansniezek

I agree with the 4th down call as well, go for the W! Only problem was Fox called a run up the gut, we knew it was coming and the defense knew it was coming. Put Tebow in, put him in motion, and get the defense guessing..even if Tebow isn’t going to touch the ball, his presence should have created enough attention on the defensive side.

The defense is getting worked, its just a shame to see the offense take a 16 play drive for a score, then a bunch of 3,4, or 5 plays and out. A minute plus of game time left before the half and its a bunch of screens…c’mon now. How about we try to get into FG range instead of off the field before the band comes on? Alot of wasted opportunities…

Shout out to Brian Xanders for putting this roster together. Thanks for nothing. Everyone else in the NFL has passed us by. Bengals,Bills,And the Raiders to name a few. Im willing to bet that we will have salary cap trouble this off season. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse BRIAN XANDERS will show us just how low he could go. PAT BOWLEN NEEDS TO WAKE UP AND FIRE THIS GUY!!!!

  • Cdub12344321

    Cassius Vaughn makes me sick!!!!

  • Kellyleephipps

Broncos fan for life and don’t care if you think I’m a traitor.  From now on, I’m rotting against Orton every time he is on the field.  I’m going to pray and shout for the other team to sack him hard…not to injure him, but to humiliate him.  I hope he stays good and healthy and keeps on sucking.  This stubborn coaching staff is RETARDED at best to not put the goal-line TEBOW package in to WIN the game.  Orton is done, in my opinion.  He doesn’t care about the fans, he is hurting our team and hurting our Salary cap for 9 Million this year, with no future here.  As far as I am concerned, he is like a Raider or Charger who snuck into our QB position and is stinking it up.  It is obvious we are going nowhere fast with this king of offensive production.  Tebow is the future, and I hope we suck just enough to not be in the Luck sweepstakes, but enough to get a high quality DT in the first round early.

I love the direction our defense is going.  If Champ would have been in there instead of Vaughn, we win this game hands down…as they picked on Cassius all day…  Von Miller is a beast.  At this point I’m still behind Coach Fox (I spent ten years in North Carolina) but his refusal to use a PROVEN goal line super weapon is inexcusable.  I’m tired of my heart sinking every week when we get in the 4th quarter and Kyle “Captain Collapsable” goes in to either lose the game or to give the enemy another chance.  So since our best chance is to see what we’ve got with Tebow and to design an unconventional offense around his scrambling/shotgun/roll out skills, the more we lose the quicker he may get in there and get some experience so he doesn’t have to suck at the beginning of 2012.  The Bills are lookin good!  Maybe they will be my exile team while we are invaded by Orton’s incompetence…!

orton is a loser put tebow in and see what he can do its not like well do anything worse then we already are doing

  • Anonymous

i would as far as to say the defense and special teams is the best attribute to the  Denver Broncos.. Heads up sign Sharper and Tommie Harris.. that way the front is solidify and then we would have a better secondary.. It’s obvious Cassius Vaughn can’t cover squawt.. Send the pressure and force QB’s to make the wrong decision.. Only way we don’t get blow out from GB is if we dial up the pressure with our starters(Von-Doom), Have Champ back in coverage, keep Mays/Woodyard away from Finnley, and start cutting up some rabbit tails..
we are in for a long one guys

  • drose1

wasn’t Fox 1-15 with the panthers last year!!  He’s just not a good coach, Chan gailey sean payton those guys are offensive masterminds! Fox is the john mcain of the NFL! His way of thinking will never win in this new era of the NFL!!!

  • Dakota Fan

First of all, I thought the defense was a bunch of duds, but they really impressed today. Von Miller- awesome…

Orton? What can I say? I’ve defended him just because he’s (sadly) our best option. Quinn and Tebow any better? I guess if we see Tebow by mid-season, it’s because we’re 2-6 and have nothing to lose.

My question for my fellow fans: is our o-line just young and will get better as they play together or are they just not very good? Legit answers please- not that they all F-ing suck and should be cut…

  • Dakota Fan

BTW- I’m done defending Orton. I’ve accepted that he’s just not very good.

  • Bronco Let’s Go

I don’t think any of the Bronco leadership is thinking normally, I think they are afraid to let Tebow have a chance on the field. They have bought all the hype and let it interfere with clear football thinking. Orton will never get better, he blinks in the crisis and doesn’t carry through. Will Elway or someone let the Fans know that they are doing a little thinking and taking a risks to develop a winning Denver Team, do it for the Fans, they are about to step out on you…

  • Shipgw

I think you are right . Fox wont start Tebow for fear of being wrong all along.  All the fan crys for Tebow is making him balk at starting him. And Elway thinks the same way. They dont want to be proven wrong.

  • Shipgw

There was never a fair competition for QB from the start. Tebow has not taken a snap under center of the first team yet this pre-season or during pratice this year. Fox or Elway had nothing to do with getting him. And they want nothing to do with him.

  • Rtyyuiosde

Tebow is a game winner and Orton is not… Enough said.

  • Boojiboyhowdy

Tebow-tards. It”s a good name for these morons.

  • Cali Crush

The defense did amazing at stopping the run today…I did question the 4th and goal call primarily because McGahee was getting stuffed all day.

  • Geno

I think the O-line is better than they appear, and will be strong in the future.  Three out of the 5 starters have less than 2 years experience and it will just take some time for them to gel.  The immediate problem is Orton’s lack of mobility.  Teams know he can’t threaten the perimeter, so they are sending middle blitzes on just about every play.  As a result the O-line spends too much time “catching” the defenders instead of getting off the ball and developing a rhythm.  The middle blitzes are also good for stuffing run plays, and are definately having an effect on the ground game as well.  Tebow’s mobility changes the entire situation.  He’s a big threat on the perimeter, and that will force defenses to move laterally and defend the field sideline to sideline instead of pinning their ears back and blitzing up the middle.  That will exhaust D-linemen & LB’s, especially at Mile High, and help the O-line open big holes in the 3rd and 4th quarters.   Also, Tebow’s chances of developing into a better pocket passer are infinately better than Orton’s chances of becoming more mobile.

  • Lookn4H20

I can’t wait to hear what these hack sports radio orton lovers say about this lOSS. I’m sure they will blame it on the defense or even the o line , or maybe going for it on fourth down. But the gutless wonder orton will be labeled as the next coming of Tom Brady.I’m sick of all these stupid idiots that say tebow is not ready, but he is a he’ll of a lot better than orton and we will never know what we have in tebow unless we see what be can do. Come on when you buy a new car the first thing you do is drive it.

  • Cheetah40

If you’re gonna gamble, use your best poker face and make the opponent think you have the winning hand. If you don’t trust your QB to throw for the final yard, then play your best cards on the running game — put Tebow in at QB. The defense has to consider: will he run and, if so, where? With Orton, you know run is not an option. And any QB can make a handoff to McGahee.

  • Anonymous

The plain fact is becoming clear: the more fans scream for Tebow, the more Fox will refuse to put him in. He will not even consider allowing him to score a game-winning TD because that would (rightly) only throw more fuel on the raging fan fire.

It has become an ego issue now that surpasses all logic. And, like US politicians who’d rather tank the US debt rating than admit they might be wrong, Fox will watch another dismal losing season unfold rather than be seen as succumbing to the popular will.

He is willing to ignore Tebow’s ability to win games by the combination of arm, legs and sheer will-to-win mentality. How many TDs did TT score in 3 games last year Coach Fox? Perhaps you could have used one of those in the 4th quarter.

Face it Bronco fans, you’re screwed.

  • flbronc

tough to judge from yesterday.  tennessee’s defense is pretty good.  look how they held ray rice last week.  ray rice rushed for 53 against them, willis rushed for 52.  espn has them ranked 9th vs the rush.

i want to say that they will improve, but the only one that i think will really improve is franklin.  the other interior guys, i dont know.

  • Anonymous

Our O-line isn’t bad at all.. most of their sacks are due to Orton lack of mobility.. they are balling tho

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Von is awesome, can’t wait until he gets his other bookend.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Especially for how chippy this game was, lots of bad blood leftover from last season.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I agree, it puts the Titans into a must pass offense and lets your defense plan accordingly.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

There’s nothing wrong with running a wildcat package, Orton’s feelings be damned.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

The guy has been to a super bowl more recently than our franchise.  We’re 3 games into the season.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

We’re weak at both guard spots in my opinion.  Walton and Franklin will come into their own IMO.  Beef up the middle next the center and you’ll see a better running game.  I’m not giving up on Beadles but I’m not sure it was fair to start the guy his rookie season.

Why throw in Tebow?  Orton is right on track if Luck is your goal.Â
