The Denver Broncos had the 2nd pick in the NFL waiver wire Sunday. Many thought “The Day After Cut Day” would be a virtual second draft for the Broncos in 2011. Deeper teams’ trash would become Mile High treasures for a front office eager to improve its depth and talent.

But the Broncos opted not to place one claim.

In contrast, the Carolina Panthers, who had top priority, snagged five players through waiver wire claims Sunday. Other teams, like the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals, picked up three apiece.

It’s true that claiming a player on the waiver wire means you also inherit the player’s contract, and that the Broncos haven’t been as loose with the purse strings as they have been in years past, but not addressing their depth on the offensive line and defensive line with some of the players that were available is surprising at best, maddening at worst.

For instance, the Bengals, who had the 4th option in the waiver wire, snagged two young, experienced, relatively productive players in WR Brandon Tate and C/G Mike McGlynn. It’s particularly disappointing to see McGlynn go to another team when the Broncos could have easily signed the former Eagles starter. It’s true that McGlynn doesn’t know the Broncos’ system, but he’d be a clear upgrade over Manny Ramirez or even Russ Hochstein. And, as a backup, he’d have time to learn.

Today’s flurry of moves means the Broncos do have another option at the waiver wire tomorrow. But based on today’s relative lack of activity (signing CB Jonathan Wilhite, a free agent, was the only roster move), don’t get your hopes up.

At least I am not the only one who is frustrated as hell with the lack of activity. There were some good kids that got cut from other teams, and I would have thought we would have at least claimed some d-line help. UGH!!

  • areferee

The mainstream media will jump on this as a sign of Denver's lack of commitment in building a winning team rather than profit first.

    Should we?

This is like having a 2nd round draft choice and passing when it's our turn. Someone has some explaining to do.

  • oldcoachB

It has to be a dollar decision… I thank they will be active tomorrow or whenever the date is that players have to clear waivers. Otherwise all Xanders talk about watching tape on 900 players and making a list of 200 is total B>S>

    Olshansky. Savaii. Harris. Tank.
You can't tell me they wouldn't help vs the run.

Does it really matter not claiming others castoffs to this team? We aren't winning the super bowl this year anyway. Lets just get the season started and see some real improvement

  • herc_rock

Igor Olshansky is a damn idiot.  I don't want that stupid clown anywhere near this team.

  • herc_rock

I'd rather have the guys who are getting waived today to make room for yesterday's waivee-s.

Xanders does nothing to improve team. This is not news. Xanders has been bad from day one. Can someone find out why Xanders still has a job. Is he married to Pats daughter? Does Xanders have video of Mr. Bowlen on a nude beach?

  • TD30isMVP

Yawn…if they want somebody they will get them with a Broncos contract, it saddens me that so many people have so little patience.

  • Doom92

They claim to have evaluated over 900 guys but don't claim even one. Thats the only thing I find a bit odd. Why bother? I cant believe that there was not one guy out there that couldn't supplant one on the 53. But there clearly wasn't one ;-).

As an Eagles fan, you didn't miss out on anything with McGlynn. He was terrible last year. He started almost the entire season (because of an injury to Jamaal Jackson) and he entered camp as the 3rd stinger. That should tell you something about how they felt about him.

He may be best served as a guard or something… Judging by last year he has no business as a starting center in the NFL.

Isn't this just how free agency worked?  They looked for low risk high impact players and they weren't affraid to ignore players that looked like an upgrade (Okoye) if they didn't like them.

More important was signing eligible players that were at camp back to the PS.

Interesting to hear that Sid. I appreciate a comment like that. But the thing is — Russ Hochstein? Manny Ramirez? It's hard to imagine they're worse. And this is a depth move, not a starting-guy move. Four teams placed claims on McGynn. I'm just wishing the Broncos had been one of them.

  • Howard Pell

Wow, can't believe we have so many experts out there who can evaluate talent better than EFX and the staff.  I'm not for wasting roster space in a rebuilding year for other team's castoffs unless there was a really outstanding pick.  If we are serious about rebuilding this year (and we do have a three year plan, according to Elway), we need to be signing FA's who show real longer term value with our own contracts.  I really like the Wilhite signing for that reason.  This team will be built for long-term success through the draft and FA signings, not from some castoff who the fans “think” can be a better backup than a player that has been in camp and worked with our linemen, and knows the system.  Let's see what happens to the players cut to make room for these waiver wire pickups who were on the 53 man roster.  True, there may be some sleepers who weren't going to stick, but they made the 80 to 57 cut, and as folks keep saying, they will “have” to be better than so-and-so who is already on our roster!  At least we will have them under our own contract.

  • Fan From Spain

get McCarthy back on the Broncos also!

  • anthony33

Could be they are cash strapped or just being fiscally responsible.  I'm sure Bowlen is tired of the money wasted on the like of Jarvis Green, Maroney, White and the list goes on and on.

That said, surely there are players out there that could help this team at least depth wise.  We'll see what happens today.

  • flbronc

we did.  Signed him to the ps.

  • LevonZevon

Chris DeGeare and Chris Cook of Minnesota could be instantly better than Hochstein or Ramirez inside the O-line.  I'd also take Atlanta's DE Chauncey Davis over Mitch Unrein at DT (even though the preference would be for a DT… not that any were discarded).

New England's CB Wilhite is a smart pickup even though I was hoping they'd cut Darius Butler to make room for anticipated week-one signing Brian Waters (to bolster a decimated right guard position in Foxboro).

Too bad, we can't interest Miami in a trade for Robert Ayers at DE (whom I would jettison for a solid DT like Kendall Langford before he is declared this year's Vernon Gholston).

With the Von Doom express around him and his return to rushing the QB with his hand on the turf in the 4-3 he played in at Tennessee, Ayers has no excuses going into his third-season.  But then we'd have no one else at DE, so Xanders disinterest in acquiring a solid veteran like Chauncey Davis makes that impossible.

We'll need more than Bunkley and Vickerson (with Marcus Thomas and Ryan McBean rotating in).

And after the relatively-easy first three games, we will be fighting to stay above .500 the rest of the way (so Ty Warren's return in November or later is mostly about saving face financially).

I can't see them risking a roster spot on speedy South Florida second-year DE George Selvie whom the Rams cut.  But Mitch Unrein is wasting a roster spot that we should investigate bringing someone in to replace.

  • Just being honest…

Can the picture of McGlynn be the caption of the week because his belly makes me chuckle.  How about?  ‘Monty wanted this guy?’
