Kyle Orton

Officially, the starting quarterback controversy in Denver is over. Kyle Orton has locked up the starting gig.

Head Coach John Fox announced this morning that Orton will be the starting quarterback for the regular season opener on Monday Night Football against Oakland.

The battle for the No. 2 spot between Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn, however, is ongoing.

If actions speak louder than words, this announcement was more powerfully punctuated the second the Broncos moved Quinn and Tebow around the depth chart last week. No big news here, just the Broncos trying to unify players and fans behind #8.

This is the worst news of my summer.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    Honestly, why?

all im saying is haow do you know whoyour starting QB is if you've only worked one of them with the starters all training camp ad all preseason? you have to see what they can do with the talent at least. i think Quin looked like he caould possibly start. he was making great plays with the 2's. i wonder what either one of them(Quin or Tebow) can do with the 1's.

Orton is definitely Temporary.  He will never bring the Superbowl…
Tebow? He has a very good chance. Real unique talent. He is a winner. And I wonder how Elway will feel
when he sees him, with another team, beating the Broncos on the way to the
    championship.

I only like this move if one of the following scenarios plays out…

#1 Broncos make playoffs with Orton being an actual factor in why we got there.

#2 We honestly think Tebow will never make it and trade him for a 1st or high 2nd round pick ASAP

#3 We honestly think Tebow just isn't ready and between Fox and Elway, they think that he just needs another year to watch and learn and only comes in this year if Orton gets hurt (Elway has always always always said throw the kid in the fire like he was, so why is he acting different with Tebow?)

#4 We are getting serious trade talks with Quinn and we are upping his value, all the while, preparing our team for the season with Orton so the team at least thinks we're trying to win it all this year.

If none of those situations is the reason, then the front office is no better than that of McDaniels. We will have a QB sideshow all over again next year because Orton and Quinn are on the last year of their contracts, and Tebow will YET AGAIN be an “unknown”. The Broncos are playing with fire, because if we don't do really good, then this front office put us back a few years because of this QB circus.

I still think that the best thing for the Broncos to do would be to start Tebow to see what he has. This isn't a “suck for Luck” mentality, as Luck could be a gigantic bust. This is a “know what you have so this isn't a wasted year if we don't win the F'ing Super Bowl” mentality.

Orton does give us the best chance to win right now, but when was the last time a 1st time starter ever gave their team the best chance to win “right now?” Elway didn't give us the best chance. Steve Young didn't, Favre didn't, Manning didn't etc… They were given the job based on where they were drafted, not because they would win 1 more game then the guy they replaced. Why isn't Tebow given this same luxury? Elway didn't beat anybody out of anything to get the starting job. Neither did any rookie at any point in their rookie/1st year starting year. It's ludicrous to think that any 1st year potential starter would ever beat out anyone to start. You throw them in there so they can learn on the job and develop. Players don't develop into players during practice, they develop during live action (again, practice doesn't have the same speed as the game). If you developed during practice, then practice squad players would be replacing all the starters by mid-season.

Denver is playing with fire big time. I just hope it doesn't blow up in their faces and burn the franchise back to the ground.

Tebow needs another year and Orton is ready now.  I like both Tebow and Orton, but anybody (including professionals such as coaches and John Elway) cant help but notice that Orton is better now.  We go 2-6 put in Tebow, we go 6-2 leave in Orton.  That simple, shut up and watch football and root for the Broncos not one player.

  • Delucat31

Because one of my best friends (a bears fan) had to suffer through the Orton years. I kept telling him… “he's not that bad”. He told me when he got traded to Denver, Orton is a very “OK” quarterback. He said, “Orton will do just enough to make you think that you should keep him and that he should be your starter but nothing more.” It's been two years and I know exactly what he means. Teams figure him/the system out and you're left with a very average talent (for NFL standards) trying to win games.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

It's better than having a quarterback you know shouldn't be your starter. All he has to do is finish a season playing well, instead of falling down to earth the way he has the past two seasons (for two years in a row, there were MVP talks surrounding Orton's QB play early in the season).

I think he's the best option on the team right now. How else do you determine a starter?

  • Delucat31

I agree. Orton has definitely looked better now. But now, is preaseason, I think we'd just like a quarterback who's going to be good later too… I hope that's one of these three guys we have.

But on a more positive note, the defense was fun to watch Saturday night! Nothing is more exciting than watching great defense!

  • Delucat31

Trial and error, I guess. I guess the distinction is just on how much time constitutes a full trial. I need to adjust to having the trial for Orton be another year.

  • Mockdrafthq.com

Nothing you said makes sense. A QB that can't hit the 15 yard out consistently is not bringing you the SB no faster than Orton.

  • King

Starting isn't the question.  The question remains:  Can he finish?

  • john

Fans are funny. Orton gives us the best chance. Did everyone forget last year and the year before that? This is crazy, Orton is not a starter!
When we are 2-6 and the Ortonites are crying for Quinn or maybe even TT just remember you wanted it.
Just an FYI, Fox won't replace Orton until the seasons over so a 2-14 season is not impossible.  Oh. and I will say I told you so…

  • Reverendofrock

I'm not the least bit concerned with Orton as QB.  I'm more worried about a running game.  We haven't had squat in the rushing department for the last 2 seasons, yet Orton's done very well.  A team can only do so much without moving the ball on the ground.  Give Orton a rushing attack and this offense will begin to win consistently.  No, I'm more worried about Moreno and McGahee running the ball than I am about Orton being the QB!!

  • hicks

I couldn't agree more. Any defense can stop a one dimensional attack after a few plays. Defenses out there are really good these days. A team has to be able to convert on short as well as break open runs to enhance the passing game.

  • cbronc

Can you say immobile, fold in the pocket with any pressure, awful record ( by the way he added to the defense sucking last year by repeatedly keeping them on the field with poor play)…..it all adds up to not being clutch!  I hate to have to sit through another game with him coming off the field 3 and out shrugging his shoulders saying “sorry guys that one was my bad”.  We have seen enough over this painful last two years so let’s turn the page to the future.

  • john

Okay, lets be non-emotional for 2 seconds. Orton is a Kubiak, a fine backup, for 3-4 games a year only. If you put Orton behind the Packers line do you really think they would have still won it? really?

With this years' killer schedule and lack of a running game, Orton and a defense that still won't be able to stop the run, this is going to be a repeat of last year. Broncs may win the first two games but after that it's not gonna be pretty.

Hey, the good news is FEX will get us back to .500 eventually. Kind of like good ole “Half-a-loaf Lou” !

  • virginiabronco

since when has KO completed a pass for more than 8 yards consistantly?

  • Big_Pete

I really think you're on to something. Orton is exactly like Kubiak. Hell, I remember when Kube came in for games when Elway was hurt, I would hear rumblings from fans that he should replace Elway cause he threw such a pretty and catchable ball. Good thing that never happened, and too bad we might be witnessing a situation like that happening before our eyes with Orton/Tebow.

People say Tebow doesn't finesse the ball… neither did Elway. They say Tebow looks to run too quickly… so did Elway in his young years. They say Tebow locks onto 1 receiver and doesn't read the Defense… neither did Elway. They also say that Orton throws a great and catchable ball… so did Kubiak.

I'm not saying Tebow is the 2nd coming of Elway, but he's a hell of a lot closer to being Elway than Orton is to taking the Broncos on his back and winning meaningful games.

  • Virgo

Fans and sportswriters/broadcasters should remember …..Coaches have spent their entire life valuating players…….they see them everyday….see how they perform……..if “Tebow” is as good as some think they should get in coaching professsion……..These coaches want to win …..if “Tebow” was as good or better than others he would be starting.

  • NMBronc-in-DC

Totally disagree and please stop with the Orton MVP talk.  His stats are padded in junk time and you know this better then most.

Give Quinn the start.  Orton will take us nowhere and Tebow is a project.  Quinn looks good and we should be finding out what we have during this 're-building year'.

  • NMBronc-in-DC

    8 is generous of you.

  • NMBronc-in-DC

    Thank you!

I so tired of Tebow talk, are you all really Denver fans? The Denver offense, without a running game, is in the top ten in every category. Orton is not the problem, the defense the past few years has been the problem. And as far as the Start Tebow because “he is a winner” talk is just plain dumb. Every college player was a winner thats why they made it to the pro's. Lets not forget Troy Smith, Matt Leinart, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Danny Wuerffel,  and Charlie Ward were all “winners” , and were these quality starting QB's. Stop talking out of emotion please. If you don't like Orton thats fine but his body of work speaks for itself. In Chicago he was a winner, and Chicago had a Defense, so now the Denver is committed the defense side of the ball, look for Orton the shine, and please don’t jump on the bandwagon when he does.
