Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Broncos Camp Football

Since former Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels was fired last December, a lot of changes have gone down in Dove Valley.  The team started by bringing in John Elway as the Executive Vice President of Football Operations and hiring former Carolina Panthers Head Coach John Fox.  (And yes, this all will relate to the defensive tackle position, just keep reading.)

There’s a rumor that Elway knows something about the quarterback position and front office affairs (he was the owner of an indoor football team for a few years) and Fox knows a thing or two about defense and productive rushing attacks.  That’s good news because at the end of last season the Broncos had one of the worst defenses in the NFL and a gruesome running game.

We’re now a few months down the road and both areas appear to have vastly improved.  In the draft, the team drafted massive Miami offensive lineman Orlando Franklin to help pave running lanes and after the draft the team signed UDFA Auburn running back Mario Fannin.  The team also acquired free agent running back Willis McGahee, a player that will bring a physicality that Denver’s backfield has been missing for quite some time.

The team also brought in several tight ends, including former St. Louis RamsDaniel Fells, who is also a fullback prospect.  More blocking tight ends will result in an improved rushing attack.  Add in the fact that this is a make-or-break year for running back Knowshon Moreno, who will getting heavy competition from McGahee, and the Broncos running game has all the potential to make leaps and bounds towards dominance.

Dumervil

The defensive side of the ball has seen similar improvements — starting with the addition of former Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller.  The pass rushing skills that Miller brings to the team are possibly only matched by those of defensive end Elvis Dumervil, who will be returning this year after missing all of the 2010 campaign due to injury.  The return of Dumervil alone will tremendously improve Denver’s defense.

Joining Dumervil on the line will be Robert Ayers, who will be moving back to his natural defensive end position that he thrived in throughout his collegiate career at Tennessee.  Former outside linebacker Jason Hunter will also be moving to defensive end where he will join rookie Jeremy Beal as rotational ends.

Behind rush specailists Doom and Ayers are the linebackers, where there is remarkable depth.  Returning linebacker Joe Mays and rookie Nate Irving will battle it out in training camp for the rights to anchor the interior, with Wesley Woodyard competing for it as well.  On the outside, returning linebacker D.J. Williams will line up across from Miller.  The next level is the secondary, where the Broncos have a talent level equal to that of the linebackers’.

The team made two great moves by locking up Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey earlier in the year and restructuring fellow veteran safety Brian Dawkins‘ contract, keeping both leaders in Denver.  Dawkins will be joined by rookie Rahim Moore as the two safeties and Bailey will probably be joined by Andre Goodman.

Behind Dawkins and Moore is rookie Quinton Carter, and youngsters David Bruton and Darcel McBath.  The cornerbacks that will be pushing Goodman for playing time will be Cassius Vaughn and Syd’Quan Thompson (cornerback Perrish Cox is facing suspension and legal troubles).

Let’s review:  the running game looks to improve and every defensive position had been upgraded — excluding the defensive tackle position, right?  Perhaps not.  One thing Denver hasn’t done is sign a big-time defensive tackle for big bucks that may not fit the system properly and be a cause for a lot of dead money down the road.  And fans are upset about that?

Listen up, Fox knows defense and he knows what he is doing.  The Broncos have a plan for this defense and a plan at the defensive tackle position.  Did it ever occur to Bronco fans that perhaps the reason Denver has not been heavily pursuing defensive tackles first in the draft and then in free agency may be because they have plans for the players already on the roster?

“We’re excited about the scheme that John Fox is running, it will give Marcus Thomas a chance to reach his potential and do what he does best which is penetrating to get up field to cause chaos in the backfield.”   Those were the words of  Thomas’ agent, Richard Burnoski shortly after his client re-signed with Denver (quote per Josina Anderson).  There’s a chance that Burnoski is on to something.

McBean

Would the holdover defensive tackles please raise your hand? (AP Photo/Sang Tan)

Holdovers Kevin Vickerson, Ryan McBean and Marcus Thomas will be returning, and rotating with Louis Leonard as the main defensive tackles, as it stands now.  Add in Jeremy Jarmon, who was acquired in a trade that sent receiver Jabar Gaffney to Washington, and Denver has five experienced defensive tackles on the roster.

That’s five players to fill two positions on the depth chart.  Where’s that huge need for a defensive tackle?  The Broncos may not have big, All Star defensive tackles, but John Fox never really has.  Carolina’s depth chart has featured “undersized” interior linemen throughout much of Fox’s career, but that didn’t stop the Panthers’ defense from ranking in the top ten nearly every season under Fox.

There’s also a possibility that Denver will still sign another defense tackle — adding more depth to the position.  Reportedly, the Broncos have made an offer to former New England Patriots defensive tackle Ty Warren.  Now Warren is exploring his options.  If he were to sign with Denver, Warren would solidify depth at the position and give the Broncos 300 pounder.

Even if Warren doesn’t sign with the team, Denver already has five players that will see playing time at defensive tackle this year, as was mentioned above.  Fox will utilize what he has to work with and place players in the best situations suited for them — resulting in a smooth rotation at defensive tackle.

Be not dismayed, there is a plan at defensive tackle and Denver’s coaches have confidence with the players on the team.  Wait until you see them play live, together, in Fox’s system before you cast judgment.  You may just be surprised.

“The Broncos may not have big, All Star defensive tackles, but John Fox never really has.”You couldn't be more incorrect.  Ever heard of Kris Jenkins?  You know, the guy who was a 3-time Pro Bowler while being coached by Fox in Carolina?  The one who was the team's best player (according to Pro Football Reference's AV) their Super Bowl year.  Yeah…him.

  • bbigg

I'm assuming you saw somewhere that Ayers went to UT. That's University of Tennessee, not Texas… Good piece though.

  • flbronc

well put.  i believe most, like me, were hoping for a solid talent at dt to bring some toughness and space eating ability to the interior line.  if that's not in the scheme, that's cool.  it just better work.  fox's guys were undersized while allens were 310+ in new orleans.  personally i am more comfortable with the bigger guys.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I shouldn't count that as an exception, but can you name another big, all star DT that played under Fox?  The Broncos will get their guy, but overpaying somebody past their prine is not the way to do that.

Working with what they have and pursuing a stud DT in next years draft sounds like a pretty good idea to me (seeing as it worked pretty good for Fox in Carolina).

  • Jlorros

Ayers is from Tennessee.  Bruton and McBath are not rookies.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

    Oy! Forgive me, corrected now.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

“bbigg” pointed out the Ayers error, that has been corrected.  The part about Bruton and McBath were actually an error correction by the edititor (who was not aware they were not rookies).  Both fixed now, thanks for reading!

  • P. Harguess

I stopped reading when you said Robert Ayers went to Texas.  Also, you mentioned the Broncos have “remarkable depth” at the linebacker position. Really? Remarkable depth?  How do you figure?  This was the worst defense in the league, and that includes the linebacking corps.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

As I've commented three times now, I was thinking Tennesee but for some reason writing Texas when I wrote with Ayers went to college — that has since been corrected.

As for the LB depth, here is our corps:MLB: Joe Mays, Nate Irving, Mike Mohamed, Braxton Kelley.

SLB: Von Miller, Deron Mayo, Lee Robinson.

WLB: D.J. Williams, Wesley Woodyard, Mario Haggan.

That's a pretty deep group, in my opinion.

  • Mckevittm

The whole part about the Line Backers is completely wrong. DJ williams will be starting at WLB, Mays and Irving will compete at MLB and Von Miller will be at SLB. Mario Haggan will be a DE. Ayers went to Tennessee, and he also will be a DE.

  • Mckevittm

Mario Haggan will be a DE.

    http://www.denverbroncos.com/t

    Look.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

    Still.  They have nice depth.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Boy I butchered this all, didn't I?  My hands were typing faster than my mind was thinking.  Fixed now.

  • Mckevittm

    i agree.

  • MrEast

MLB: Joe Mays was bad in Philly. The rest are unproven.

SLB: None of them have started a game.

WLB: Williams has played at a slightly above average level. Woodyard has played at an average level at best. Haggan is very average.

There are no pro bowlers at linebacker on this roster.

Where is the depth in that?

  • Dbaumga797

Finally some sanity to this whole discussion! Everyone blasted McD for overpaying players that didn't fit his scheme and now they blast the current regime for not doing the same…before a single game has been even been played. And the mess left to EFX will NOT be solved in a single year (nor should it). Doing this the right way will take time and patience…something fans seem to have little of these days.

  • Someonetobe

We do have remarkable depth at linebacker.  At first glance it might seem a shade weak, but remember we have a ton of defensive ends that know the linebacker position that could slide out in case of serious depletion of the backer core.  That's hidden depth, but it counts.  Versatility of personel is a great asset when the injuries roll in.

  • MrEast

“Holdovers Kevin Vickerson, Ryan McBean and Marcus Thomas will be returning, and rotating with Louis Leonard as the main defensive tackles, as it stands now.  Add in Jeremy Jarmon, who was acquired in a trade that sent receiver Jabar Gaffney to Washington, and Denver has five experienced defensive tackles on the roster.”

Uhhhhh are we bragging about Vickerson, McBean, Thomas, and Jarmon? None of these guys would start on the Giants defensive line. You seem to be having confidence in the roster just because you want to. Look at it for what it is, a horrible situation that is not being attended to.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

I see depth, I see a jacked MLB Mays that John Lynch called one of the up and coming MLB's in the game.  Do you really doubt Von Miller as SLB?And at WLB I think Williams has always been a better fit as a OLB than an ILB, I think he'll do really well back outside.

Williams should have made a Pro Bowl (IMO) and Miller surely will.  The depth is Woodyard (who I think could be a starter), Irving (who looks impressive) and Haggan (who is technically a DE that can still play OLB).

  • John

Who is your editor? There are quite a few grammatical errors in this. I suggest you have more than one pair of eyes read this over before posting.

  • Crazygator3

This article throughly explains all my questions, except for one dealing with the wrs. I'm not convinced that our wr core is “up to date?” Don't take it literal.. Eric decker and D. Thomas are 2 players I would love to see this season, but McDaniels didn't really plug them in last season.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Maybe I'm just seeing things through orange and blue sunglasses.  But I do brag about Vickerson and I have faith in Fox's system.

And the main point I was trying to make is have patience and see the guys play before you get too cranky.

  • Hrlaxer Buckley

God, you guys just think you know everything let the season start and see how everyone plays don't be so quick to judge. This is a completely new defense! Hold your horses. Have some pride in your team.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Thanks for the suggestion, will do so in the future.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Here's a look at the roster:

Returners:  Brandon Lloyd, Britt Davis, Matthew Willis, Eric Decker and Eddie Royal.

Newbies:  David Anderson, Mark Dell, D'Andre Goodwin, Jamel Hamler, Eron Riley and Marshall Williams.

Injured: Demaryius Thomas (he'll be gone until at least mid-November).

The team has a lot of young talent at the position and some proven veterans in Lloyd and Royal.  Young bucks like Decker and Williams I expect will really shine this year.

Overall though, I think the Broncos will be much more of a running team than in years past.

  • TD30isMVP

Grammatical errors! Half of these guys spell defense with a friggin “c” and you want grammar corrections! We write friggin Haikus here we don't need no stinking grammar!

  • Trevor2755

I would definately brag about vickerson considering he cut 30+ lbs just to fit the scheme better a guy with that kind of determination is great on any team and thomas was a 1st round talent that fell to the 4th because of character issues but he hasnt done anything wrong he just hasnt been given an opportunity yet because he didnt fit with mcd.

Personally i think theperception of our d'line is that it is worse than it really is every starter from our dline last year isnt starting this year. So no one really knows how good or bad our dline is

  • areferee

HEY, I happen to like Kelsey Grammer…BACK OFF!

  • areferee

    May I have an AMEN?

  • robtink242

i like the notion of Mario Haggan at MLB.. tight list

  • treanovak

I agree with most of this except Broncos have no depth at cornerback. CB isn't a position where you can just plug someone in and they'll do fine; it takes skills and besides Champ, none of the other CB's have skills. Maybe I'm just not seeing it but I remember a lot of touchdowns getting thrown on Vaughn and Thompson.

  • areferee

OH, please!  This is a blog site, not the New York Times.

The purpose here is to stimulate Bronco fans into useful and fun dialog.  It isn't helpful to be critical of minutia.  What is relevant is the information that is being shared.  Facts are facts and are open to correction, and that has been done.  Otherwise, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and this is where the debate takes place.  That is what the author is trying to stimulate…successfully, I may say!

If we spend all our time fretting over grammar and syntax, there won't be time for football.  Reading most of the comments, I would say that we have no right to be casting metaphorical stones.

    And besides:  SHADDUP!

  • crazykid

Hey Jon, did you know Ayers went to Tennessee?

  • Broncos_GM

I would love the moves so far if we were smart enough to have gotten Amobi Okoya (24 year old stud DT).  We let him go when we could have traded a 7th round pick, picked him off waivers or shown him the money.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/KPP33MCCNMXVZNP2ON4S2QFEGA Brian

Will you all get over the Ayers went to Tennessee jeez? Not a big deal or relevant at all. I have a great feeling about the defense next year.. think about the outside pass rushing skills that will be on the field. Ayers and Doom coming every play (I saw impressive plays from Ayers and I think he really might play like the first round draft pick he is). Then you throw in D.J. and Von at outside linebackers who have speed unlike most linebackers, I like that odds with those 4 players getting to opposing QB's (mainly Phillip Rivers! lol) We still have Champ and Goodman who make a decent CB tandum.. definietly need to draft the next shutdown corner next year though to learn from Champ. I feel good about the safeties (Dawkins, Moore, McBath, Bruton, yes i'm very happy Hill is gone. Why was he on the team so long?) DT I don't know what to think about yet. I dont like Vikerson at all, I saw him commit something like 6 idiot penalties during one game last year. I think Marcus Thomas will have a breakout year since he was considered a TOP DT the year he was draft and i've seen him make some nice plays even though his limited playing time.

I say trade Orton for DT to anchor our D-Line and go to war. I'm tired of Orton being on the team, i'm tired of knowing he is linked the the Jay Cutler/ Josh McDaniels ordeal and he will never lead our team where it needs to be. Let TEBOW lead all year, we have Orlando Franklin now to improve our OL so just let tebow hand the ball off to Moreno, McGahee and White and let him do his thing when he has too. I have all faith in Tebow when I saw him come back and win the Texans game in the 4thQ and when he ALMOST came back and beat the chargers with the last pass of the game. He's not a rookie anymore. Let him lead the team all season! Oh and why can't Demaryius Thomas be healthy??!?

  • CJ

    nicely put there Brian

  • cHe

i agree….i like Irving starting by mid-season and i think he will surprise a lot of people as well

  • CJ

I guess things could be worse at DT. Kevin Vickerson and Marcus Thomas are both meant for the 43 defense. I am more interested in Thomas beings we drafted him and he hasn't really took on a starting role.

Also theres been allot of dissing on Jons posting which isn't needed.
Good job Jon on a good post! haha

  • ad91968

I'll say it again, I believe we have no issues at DT.  With the 4-3 we have those on the roster that will attract blocking and allow DEs to get to the QB.  Heck we've got great DEs to do this…and if the DEs attract attention/double team, a couple of these DTs have teh penetration ability to sack.  I believe our biggest challenge is CB.  What happens when Champ needs a blow?  We need CB help/depth big time.

  • Benesh513

as of today we have 10 cb on our roster, im sure we can find a few to make the team

  • robtink242

i love my Broncos… but i do have to clear the air.. first of all we must not give up on Demaryius Thomas. Mcduma$$ never used him right.. he's a vertical threat not a slot receiver or KR.. that was silly use him right and he can benefit us.

Our DT position is decent.. i do believe the addition Ty Warren would have us set.. He can play long side Doom just to free him up.. i really didn't like the DT market this year beside Jenkins.

I know Fox brought in his TE because of familiarity, cool. but there should be no reason for Julius Thomas not to be be our starting TE with Quinn/Fells as the blocker.

  • Steveking77

Lets try to get Samuels from Philly for a 3rd-4th round pick and let him start opposite of champ.  You know Philly will move him now after getting Nnamdi and Cromartie

  • MrEast

It doesn't matter what John Lynch calls Joe Mays. He has still not played that well, that's what matters.

I don't doubt Von Miller, I don't know Von Miller as an NFL starter, and neither does Von Miller at this point.

There's some potential on that side of the roster no doubt, but I wouldn't really call it depth. You could stretch it to a depth of potential. No one besides DJ has really proven themselves.

  • areferee

What is the status on DT Ben Garland and his Air Force commitment?  How long do they intend to keep him on the RNWT list?  Anyone?

  • TheTroglodyte

Jon, I thought it was a fun article. I appreciate the optimism before the season starts.

  • IrishBronco

WHAT A HORSE SHIT PIECE THIS IS!Firstly let me say, I am all for optimism prior to the start of the season. I as much as anyone want the Broncos to be great again. However, this piece is thrash because the most of it is either stupid optimism or else rubbish statements. Let me explain.”the Broncos running game has all the potential to make leaps and bounds towards dominance.”-How can adding an undrafted rookie and a backup help a 26th ranked running team towards “dominance”. Thats just a load of crap.
“Behind rush specailists Doom and Ayers are the linebackers, where there is remarkable depth.”-Depth at linebacker?? What depth. Joe Mays is at best a backup who is, yes a thumper, but also extremely slow. I can just see him getting caught 1 on 1 with a rb and getting burned to pieces. Based of the tape i've seen of Irving, he is much the same. Also DJ Williams is an underachiever and has been all his career.”The next level is the secondary, where the Broncos have a talent level equal to that of the linebackers’.”-This is probably true but not in the way Jon had intended. Dawkins is now only useful as a mentor and Goodman is rubbish. Champ is still awesome, but the rest are unproven rookies. Best case scenario, 2 of them turn into starters.”Did it ever occur to Bronco fans that perhaps the reason Denver has not been heavily pursuing defensive tackles first in the draft and then in free agency may be because they have plans for the players already on the roster?”-How can they have plans for a bunch of no names who will only ever be good enough to be backups. I guarantee you that if we cut any of our listed DT's, they would not get picked up to be a starter in the NFL. The only thing that has occurred to me is that Pat Bowlen is broke, I mean MC Hammer broke.“We’re excited about the scheme that John Fox is running, it will give Marcus Thomas a chance to reach his potential and do what he does best which is penetrating to get up field to cause chaos in the backfield.”   Those were the words of  Thomas’ agent”-What did you expect his AGENT to say? He ain't going to come out and say we are not looking forward to Thomas in Fox's scheme. It is his job to big his client up.I have to say that I think the sad truth is this piece is just complete nonsense and has no evidence to backup the claims made. Using the same crap players that got us the 2nd worst record in the league last year is not going to make us good just becasue we have a new coach. It's like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic…its still the same thing.Let the Andrew Luck sweepstakes begin.

  • areferee

Good to have you back, Caveman!

How do you like working for Geico?  :-)

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Can't play until 2012, that much I know.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Let's pickup this debate mid-season.  We'll see what was over optimism and reality by then.

  • areferee

I agree completely with two parts of your diatribe:

“The only thing that has occurred to me is…” …”HORSE SH(*)T”…
