Just because Rahim Moore was selected in the second round (45th overall) doesn’t mean that he wasn’t highly sought after. All around the league Moore was up high on teams’ draft boards and legendary analyst Mike Mayock had him ranked as the best safety prospect available.
Even before the draft Moore had meet with several teams, and most of them had high selections in the second round like the Bengals, Cowboys, and Titans.
Recently at a press conference another legendary draft analyst (a one that actually makes picks though), Ozzie Newsome stated he had some serious interest in taking Rahim Moore.
Newsome said the Ravens were going to draft UCLA safety Rahim Moore(notes)in the second round if Smith had been off the board.
That statement is very interesting because not only did Baltimore spend a first round pick on the secondary, but safety is not an extremely high need for them. Newsome, who is usually spot on with his picks, was considering selecting Moore as the heir to the ball-hawk Ed Reed. One of the several upsides to Moore was his ball-hawking instincts (Moore lead the NCAA in interceptions his junior season with 10), so perhaps Ozzie and Elway were seeing the same things.
What does this all mean? Nothing until the season begins (whenever that may be). However, I sure like knowing that the potential is there.
