Straight out of Adam Schefter‘s mouth:

This is quite the bold move the NFLPA* is making to try to force non-union members to unionize. Since the NFLPA* technically no longer represents the players since their decertification, the brings in the question of the validity of this request.

The NFL pays the expenses of the 15 or so prospects and their families they invite every year to provide them with a ‘once-in-a-lifetime experience‘, according the NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. For many selected players and families this is a huge achievement. Anyone can attest to this that remembers when Aaron Curry‘s name was called as the fourth overall pick of the 2009 draft.

What do you think? Does the NFLPA* have the right to ask the invitees to stay at home and pass up this opportunity? How would you feel if the Broncos selected a player who didn’t walk up on stage and ignored the press? Air it out in the comments.

the nflpa* certainly has the right to ask whatever it wants- they can do whatever they wish within the law. it does not mean that they won't look like a petulant child and say i am taking my ball and going home. it's pretty silly that they would seriously ask the college kids to get involved like this. i bet the one's who thought this up were not at the top of the draft, and didnt have the opportunity to have their college achievements celebrated in this way with their families. moves like this make me further doubt that the nflpa ever negotiated in good faith with the league and intended litigation all along.

Certainly not going to endear the players with the fans…bad PR move.

Wouldn't bother me too much. As a fan I certainly wouldn't feel negatively towards any individual player we drafted if they didn't come to the event. If I were one of the draftees, though, it'd take a hell of a lot to keep me out of that room.

Didn't the NFLPA de-certify? If they did then they aren't even an entity any more, and have no rights to do or ask anything to or of anybody. This is one freaky move by De Smith, et al. Makes me sick.

As someone who will be attending the draft, I could care less about the players attending the draft or not.

However, as a blogger, the NFLPA* ($@#!) can ask the rookies to wear pink jock straps and it doesn't really matter. It's not like the incoming rookies are going to be crossing picket lines while being there or anything.

Yeah, you get drafted once and even that is one in a million. How are you going to ask someone to NOT be there to hold that #1 jersey in front of them. It's be like SAG asking an actor to not accept their Oscar.

So what possible point does the NFLPA have doing this? Does it help them get a better deal… no. It just goes back to they had absolutely no intention of negotiating. Not only have I swayed to side of the owners. I have beginning to despise the players and NFLPA.

I did hear on the NFL network that the players were considering setting up a picket line outside the draft. That would be a BAD move, but if they do it, I would hope that the covering network would identify every person in that line so the fans can see how much their favorite players think about them…

  • flbronc

somewhat off topic… i have always wondered… how do you get tickets to the draft?

  • flbronc

wow. just wow. i have seen blue collar folks strike for better pay or better workplace safety and have felt some sympathy for them… a bunch of millionaires picketing in front of the draft grubbing for a few hundred thousand each over the life of their contracts…. somehow not feeling their plight. last i checked, league minimum still puts you 5-6 times the median household income of the entire US.

It's a bit different every year, but if you're a fan wanting to attend it usually just means waiting in line the night before, getting a wrist band/ticket and then showing up the next day again to get in. First come/first serve, no cost and lots of souvenirs.
