John Elway has just announced via his Twitter account that John Fox has been named the newest head coach of the Denver Broncos.

In a string of Tweets Elway stated,

“[Fox] is a dynamic and proven leader who will energize our entire organization. John has coached great defenses, turned teams around and been to Super Bowls. We couldn’t be more excited to have him lead the Denver Broncos.”

Fox is 73-71 (.503%) all time with a 5-3 (.625%) record in the post-season, he has been a head coach exclusively with the Carolina Panthers.

Coach Fox is a member of the Chuck Noll coaching tree; Fox has served under Noll, Bobby Ross, Art Shell, Mike White, Rich Brooks and Jim Fassel. Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio served as a coordinator for Fox in Carolina.

In 2003; one season after taking over in Carolina, Fox led the Panthers to the Super Bowl and lost by a last second field goal by the New England PatriotsAdam Vinatieri.

What's with John Elway and Twitter?! hope he doesn't Tweet draft strategies this year lol

  • herc_rock

    Woof.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Two terms come to mind, “cautiously optimistic” and “underwhelmed”.

  • robtink242

FOX wow… well atleast you know we are going back to our old days of pounding the rock.. Bet anyone we have our 1000+ back this year

  • flbronc

i am with josh temple…. but more on the underwhelmed side of things.

correct me if i am wrong, but he's a 4-3 guy. we need a strong oc, hopefully we can get someone other than mccoy.

now that the decision has been made, i think i wanted dennison.

  • Mergrath

I love it! This guy can coach up a defense and he loves to run the ball. Now…if we can just add Koetter as OC/Asst. Head Coach I will…tmi!

  • Hope

The Broncos should of took more time interveiw more coaches. This chioc was way to fast and irresponsible.John fox went in thier got them all pumped up like he does his player and got the job.they should of thought about it for a few days atleast.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I wanted Bill Cowher; then I settled on Perry Fewell. Fox is Denver's equivalent of the Redskins signing Mike Shanahan; except worse (for the Broncos).

Hopefully with a new location will come new innovation; I am sure somewhere Andrew Mason is smiling.

  • areferee

Remember, these decisions are by committee, headed by Elway. There is still a GREAT chance the OC will be Rick Dennison…and possibly Ass't HC. That would be a good choice.

  • areferee

    …should HAVE taken…oh, never mind!

  • NavyBSU_fan

I like the Fox as head coach deal. He has proven he knows how to rebuild a franchise. Yes, I agree, that he needs a strong OC. Dennison had gone all in to be a Denver Bronco. Why not make him the Assistant HC/Offense and finally give him the play calling. (I think he would jump at the chance to come back to the Broncos, he doesn't call plays for Gary Kubiak, and he didn't for McDaniels. The Offense would be his in Denver)

Keep Wink at DC. Fox can help him learn how to be a great DC since he was such a good one and built good defenses in Carolina.

I am excited for next season! Go Broncos!

  • areferee

Look closely at the three times he rebuilt the Panthers back to winning programs…and then hope and pray that year in and year out consistency comes from Elway, Xanders and the other coaches. This could be the best decision since HIRING Shanny.

Every coach has detractors, but I hope we will unite behind the wisdom of this choice until such time as we have evidence to the contrary.

    Whenever you fear…picture the hoodie…

  • herc_rock

    Underwhelming is right.

  • AtomicLeo

Great hire. No waiting a year for the guy to grow into the job. Good defensive background and a hard nose running the ball guy. May not take us all the way real soon, but he's the stability the franchise needs and you can bet he'll be prepared for the draft and will not be looking to trade the team's blue chip players 2 weeks into the job.

  • mikebirty

Wish I could say something better than he was the best candidate available and I'm not unhappy

  • Rcsodak

The next big news item will be Fairley's announcement tomorrow……fingers crossed, breath held…

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Hah! I am a bit short sighted in that Fox had his budget significantly slashed prior to going 2-14 this season.

While I'm commenting, I don't believe Dennison is a possibility as an OC in Denver as he's employed as that in Houston currently. However, you can't bring up strong offensive coordinators without mentioning Brad Childress (who is currently employable and I see no reason he would have a problem serving under Fox).

  • herc_rock

    I hope everyone likes 10-7 snooze-fests!

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Mason loves him … and he's got me pretty convinced he can't be all too bad

  • Dbaumga797

Dennison would HAVE to be Assitant HC in order to bring him here..can't do a lateral.

  • Dbaumga797

Better than 14-59 loses to the RAIDERS!

  • flbronc

I was thinking that he couldnt do it at all… i guess asst hc could work… but would he come? he's interviewed and been passed over twice for hc…

  • flbronc

i would love a defense that could hold a team to either 10 or 7. both numbers are good for me.

  • NMBronc

While not a sexy pic, this is solid.

  • herc_rock

You'd be good with an offense that scores 10 or 7?

That's what you get with John Fox offensively. He's more conservative than Dan Reeves.

  • Burnetty 4 Broncos

as opposed to 2-14 snoozefests? and as long as we are the 10 and not the 7, I'll take that 16 times next year…

    I like the pick.

  • Jmo

No offense, Hope. I tend to think Elway and Co have a better grasp on football than you do on analysis.(or grammar and spelling)

  • areferee

As they say in politics: Ass't Head Coach, like the Vice President, is just a heartbeat away from office. I think Dennison would jump at the chance to be a Bronco again.

Although it's said that Fox may prefer McCoy, Elway/Xanders have 2 votes and Elway is in charge. Don't rule out Rick quite yet. I STRONGLY prefer Dennison to McCoy.

  • areferee

Good point, but the “Fish” are making a strong bid for “Chilly”.

  • areferee

    …forever and ever…Amen

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Mason also called Lou Saban a promising youngster.

  • areferee

Good plan, but here again, Fox has a stated preference in Jim Mora as the DC. John Elway: “I'll see your Jim Mora and raise you a Rick Dennison”.

  • rct930

    Could McCoy be staying?
    http://profootballtalk.nbcspor…/

  • Dakota Fan

I'm not commenting one way or another. I think Fox will be fine IF he can submit to the authority above him. That's my only concern- that he'll realize that he's working for Elway, Ellis, Bowlen and not the other way around.

But what the hell do I know? I said McDaniels was exactly what we needed.

  • 81denvernative

I'm a little hesitant about this being as he is coached the only team to have a worse season then us. Also, is this good or bad for Tim Tebow?

  • areferee

Come on Herc…Tebow will do more than that in the first chapter…I mean, quarter. :-)

  • Jmo

Fox is an excellent coach. He took a team to the Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme!! Plus, he had one of the cheapest, worst owners in all of football and one of the NFL's most apathetic fans bases and never complained a bit He'll do fine. I just hope Bronco fans will give him a chance for crying out loud. This guy is no hoodie jr.

  • areferee

“Lombardi Award winner Nick Fairley of Auburn will announce on Friday if he plans to skip his senior year and enter the NFL draft. The junior defensive tackle could be the top overall pick”.

But Carolina picks ahead of us…

  • rct930

So much for the speculation that Bowlen would go cheap with the next hire. They selected the most expensive coach out of the group they interviewed. Fox is a great hire. He will get our defense turned around. I'm looking forward to next season.

  • Shawno85

We had a 1000+ yard back this year… the difference is making the plays when they count.

  • coskibum

I'm worried that McCoy will stay. He should be shown the door. I would like to see Dennison as OC/Asst HC and Mike Singletary as DC.

    Only time will tell…

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I wasn't really that high on Fewell until his interview. After his meeting with the media he really grew on my, I'm slightly disappointed he wasn't the pick.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Jason LaConfora is speculating that Jim Mora Jr. could be our defensive coordinator and that Danny Smith from D.C. has his contract up and could be coming to Denver as special teams coach. If Fox already had a plan on the table yesterday it sounds like this could've lead to his hiring.

  • glaxsnax

If you're in a 'fox' hole you need a second guy to watch while you sleep.

  • glaxsnax

I am not elated with the decision for Fox. He seems to be a politician in the matter and not of Blue and L'orange. I guess it was his neck tie and shirt that he darned for the interview. I hope he lobbies for Dennison to help in Denver. The wrath has been unleashed.

  • roshon2411

Well at least he doesn't have an Pro-Bowl QB and receiver to piss off and trade away.

I think he was the best of the bunch…and should be a good hire. Would have loved either Cowher, Gruden, or Harbaugh.

The key will be who he hires as OC.

I'm not a big fan of Dennison. He's been lucky to follow the footsteps of Gibbs/Kubiak but outside of Kubiak and Denver would anyone else consider him for OC position? Besides Denver would have to make him at least Ass. Head Coach to come to Denver….don't think that would mesh well with Fox.

I have a feeling McCoy will be staying in Denver and by the last few games(I assume he was calling the plays) was not thrilled by the play calling.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Jim Fassel come back to Denver. Fox and Fassel did work together during the Giants run to the Super Bowl in 02'.

  • glaxsnax

Thou hath spoketh this, mine brohem.

    Word that.

    yu can seh dat agen.

In Japan there is a phrase for this…but it's in Japanese. Loosley translated “huang koo pi jungeee des schnow mugasi hauf drissler” means…get used to it. The Broncos ain't no democracy but we have to believe that their decisions are in the best interests of the fans.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

McCoy is likely to stay on as OC.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Oh, wow, I was hearing Jim Mora, Sr… lol, whoops. I am not so discouraged anymore.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Confora also nearly called Dennison as our HC this morning, as did Schefter.
