Denver Broncos to draft 2nd in 2011 NFL Draft

2011 NFL Draft Order — The Denver Broncos will draft 2nd overall in April’s 2011 NFL Draft following their 4-12 2010 regular season record.

The Carolina Panthers will draft first. The Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills will draft third and fourth respectively.

If the Broncos don’t trade down, it’ll be the highest position the Broncos have drafted in franchise history. To say 2010 was an underwhelming season would be an understatement.

To say we would be upset if the Broncos draft anything but a defensive player with that 2nd pick would be an understatement as well.

    Did you guys see that “psychic” lady in the Denver Post a few days ago?

    She said we would choose a coach with tough skin. No Duh! all head coaches need to have tough skin.

    But she did say something that interests me:

    “I didn't get a name on the Broncos' draft pick, just that they would get a young kid, with dark hair and blue eyes. I get the sense he will be out of a top-10 school, and he's going to be an odd pick for a first-round draft pick.”

    pearson would be great though I think I would rather have Fairley. The only thing I would say is that we should keep Quinn. Good backup quarterbacks do not come along every day.

    I can see your point with Quinn, especially because Tebow like to put his head down and run into D-linemen and safties. ( I love that attitude personally). Although, I think we need picks more than we need Quinn as a backup. I'm sure we can pick up a veteran that has a lot of game experience that is williing to work with Tebow and help him on some things. When they show Tebow on the sideline, you don't see Orton anywhere around.

    I really don't see it. A lot of teams saw him put up big numbers this year but they also saw the fact that he can't handle pressure situations or pressure in his face. His mobility is a hinderance. Don't get me wrong he won't lose a game for you, but he def won't win one either. I hope you're right though…I'd love to get a second for him.

    No I hope it's not Fassell. I wouldn't mind seeing Nolan or even Studs as the HC. Of course if Studs stayed we would need really strong coordinators.

    I was looking at our schedule and I noticed something. If our defense was improved enough to where it stopped, say, 10 points from being score by our opponents (completely feasable), assuming everything stayed the same, we would have been 10-6 and in the playoffs. To me, that says one thing, we need to draft defense, so enough of the Andrew Luck shenanigans.

    High comedy! I read that the other day and couldn't stop laughing. Sadly, her knowledge and understanding of the team wasn't much worse than kizla and some of the rest of the dp staff. At least we can look forward to that Nuggets championship in 2011/12.

    Orton goes to wherever Mcdaniels is going. Mcd will get an OC job somewhere. would it surprise us if he got hired in sayyy san fransico? Orton would be a solid fit there weapons good oline running game and a decent D perfect fit for a guy that won't “lose” the game but won't win it. Aubrayo Franklin is a young 3-4 linemen there they franchised and haven't been able to get a deal done for why not trade orton/ a pick for franklin and give him a deal the guys really good.

    Which was hardly ever. Did you seem him run today. All he does is jump around when he gets to the hole. We need a back that is going to hit it with a burst. I actually enjoyed watching LenDale White in th preseason.

    Sam Bradford, a very accurate QB with a quick delivery and a full season of experience against a Seattle defense that stinks: 19/36, 155 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. “He's a franchise QB!”

    Tim Tebow in his third start and playing against San Diego, the league's best defense = 16/36, 205 passing yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 94 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD “His throwing motion is too slow. He'll never be a pro QB!”

    Sure, Bradford's receivers dropped a couple of passes. But Lloyd let a 50-yard bomb slip right through his hands.

    Let's give the kid a chance while we rebuild our defense.

    Best case scenario is that Luck is on the board and Elway screws Shanny out of a bunch of draft picks and Peterson (or any other top ten defender) is still there when Washington picks.

    Worst case scenario, Carolina takes Luck leaving Denver with the pick of every defensive player on the board and our team takes someone who makes an impact like Suh of Detroit or Long of St Louis.

    I am not saying I want either… just getting those vibes. I would love to see Harbaugh, but not even sure that would be the right choice. Tons of coaching changes means anything could happen.

    Kizla wrote an article this morning stating Tebow would be a detriment to hiring a coach. I think the exact opposite and believe it will bring out the right coach.

    What I do know is this (and Vince_marine I agree with you on defense, defense and more defense in the draft), we MUST land the top flight DC once and for all. Pay Rivera, Maranelli or Capers whatever it takes to get them here if one of them is not the head coach.

    That article was entertaining, I'll say that. Agree with you on Kizla. However, I really like reading Klis and Paige. The other clown, can't think of his name right now, is also a dud.

    First time I saw Bradford play was last night against the Seahawks. He had the 'deer in headlights' look the whole night and made many dumb mistakes. He has a good arm, but I expected better since he has “taken every snap” this year.

    Great stuff. And Bradford was playing Seattle(!!!), a team that ranks up there with the Texans on defense (Freeman had 5TD passes against them last week) while Tebow was playing against a top 2 defense.

    Similarly, Cutler's INT “just sailed on him.”

    I hate that the analysts dont have time to watch unimportant games like Tebow's last game and make their evaluations based on highlights and stat lines. He was accurate, avoided what would have been at least three sure sacks for most NFL QBs, and had his 4 win team in it until the last play of the game.

    Would anybody who has actually watched Tebow's last three starts trade him for a “sure thing” like Stafford, or even Bradford?

    Of the two Broncos first round picks this year, which was more productive? Strangely, nobody complains about the first pick though because conventional wisdom and the echo chamber said it was reasonable.

    Considering the financial situation the Broncos have been in since the free-spending Shanahan, and the fact that he is still on the payroll, along with McDaniels, there is NO WAY the Broncos can afford to draft in the #2 slot in the first round. Those draft choices usually command around a $50M contract.

    We will be forced to trade down, even though we need the talent that choice would bring. We will have to do our building from the later, more affordable rounds. Wise trading, excellent drafting and younger free agents is what is needed. Look to Elway and Coach ??? for all of that.

    agree with you on most of the post, however i would not call tebow accurate on a 16-36 outing. a lot of his balls were over thrown or wide. only two that i can remember were total drops- one to lloyd on the bomb and the one by decker coming across the middle (which was a heck of a throw). the announcers praised him on a couple for 'throwing it away' but to me it looked like he was trying to get the receiver the ball and it sailed on him. do i think it was a bad outing as a whole? no. but i wouldnt call his accuracy one of the high points.

    i would love to know the settlement with mcd, as that would have something to do with how much is available- and how long we were paying him. it is entirely possible that the broncos pick high and put more money on the back end of the contract of whoever we pick- that can get bowlen out of an immediate financial bind. we only owe shanny one more year if i recall correctly, and what we owe mcd is a fraction of what we owe him..

    the other saving grace would be a rookie wage scale in the new cba- which has to be in place soon.

    A lot of those incompletions were throw-aways because nothing was there; San Diego has a great D.

    Fine, I should have written “accurate enough.” The “high point” was his overall play.

    To all of those worrying about the Rookie Salary, they don't have a new contract yet and Rookie Salaries is a key issue. To those who love/hate Tebow please remember he didn't create the hype, he is just a kid still and will be prone to mistakes as well as get better. I would rather have a guy that has heart and work ethic, as well as strong leadership skills that needs to be taught the nuances of the game than a guy you need to teach those things to. The “slow throwing motion” will not be an issue when he learns to anticipate where the ball should go, accuracy comes with practice (anybody remember Elway on short throws?) and comes with experience. Let the kid be a kid, he wasn't drafted to save the franchise he was drafted as a project with huge upside…I think he has shown he is better than his haters thought and not as good as his followers thought, he is a Rookie.

    i agree with your sentiment on his over all play. in fact i commented as we were watching the game that with three minutes left in the game, even though the only way to pull it out was needing two touchdowns, i didnt feel like we were out of the game. it has been a long time since i felt that way- and it was mostly because i believed that tebow could get it done, and he almost did.

    I think I read where SD has the 2nd best pass defense in the league. If that is the case, 1 INT in that many attempts is actually pretty good. Once Tebow has more time to study film on these teams, he'll get better reads next year.

    Isn't the new CBA going to address rookie salaries? Thought that was a major point. If true, then that changes the whole picture.

    I do agree however, that a $50MM contract is not going happen.

    This team needs many things on defense. To me the most pressing need still is a top quality ILB. Haven't had one since Al Wilson. I don't see or read of anyone that would qualify as the number pick in the draft, but if Matthews (from Oregon, brother of Clay) is available in the later rounds (like 3 or later) I'd jump all over that.

    Hear, hear (as well as Here. Here).

    Hire Harbaugh first and then Luck can hit the ground running. Before its announced, he can legally meet with Luck and hint that he should give Jerry Richardson the choice of getting the pick of the remaining draftees and no other choices or getting the rest of the draftees and two second-rounders as well (Miami's and our own choice or the one we get from Buffalo for Tebow).

    With Elway's imprimatur and blessing, and his old college coach knowing which system he's most comfortable in, Luck will make us forget Tebow's slow-release and inaccuracy in no time (and Luck is mobile as well… but just not as overly-dependent on breaking bone-jarring tackles).

    Buffalo can get Tebow like they wanted to fill seats and lead the team in cold-weather and swirling snows (where Tebow's now-demonstrated skill-set will be of even better use). He's probably now a safer bet than Mallet or Newton, and the Bills can still use their top-seven selection of a big Eric Moulds-sized WR like AJ Green to catch his jump-balls.

    Denver still has a second-round choice and Carolina gets two second-rounders to save face in addition to Denver's second-overall choice in round-one.

    If Luck goes back for his Senior year, Richardson still has the pick of the remaining draftees and can add whomever he wants (like Cam Newton). But he won't have the two additional second-rounders that he gets by agreeing to trade with Denver to go down one tiny slot.

    Only Elway has the chops to pull it off and only Elway knows that we need a can't-miss QB to build around (and especially one who won't battle his legacy as much as be literally invited to put his own spin on it).

    With Tebow, we will get a minimum of six wins next year (and maybe as much as 8 or 9 with his expected Sophmore season maturation).

    The one thing Tebow can't likely improve is his slow-release (which lefties like Esiason at Maryland, Stabler at Alabama and Young at BYU didn't have to worry about changing as they turned pro). However, his mobility and ability to buy time can mitigate this (especially like Jim Kelly and Doug Flutie demonstrated in the cold climate of Buffalo).

    Tatum Bell, Knowshown Moreno, Selvin Young etc.. etc… Ugh.

    Look at who is thriving at RB in week #17. Matt Forte is still solid, LaGarrette Blount is moving chains, Shonn Greene, Chris Ivory, Ben Jarvis-Green Ellis, Mendenhall, Michael Turner and Ray Rice (short but stocky).

    Get the picture? Good. Now get the right ball-carrier, Brian and St. John. But get Andrew Luck first. Carolina won't pass on him. He just has to pull an Eli or an Elway on them.

    Cutler, Melo and B-Marsh didn't want to be in Denver (and I doubt Dez Bryant would've re-signed here in 4 years if we drafted him last April).

    That's just how it goes. Luck will be in QB heaven playing under Harbaugh and Elway in this region. If Harbaugh passes on Michigan, he'd probably want Denver over San Francisco. And with his read-heavy system, who could argue him wanting to build around a QB he's already plenty comfortable and familiar with.

    Elway knows Luck's no one-year-wonder like Robert Ayers or Jarvis Moss. And Elway must know that Darius, Bowers and Fairley are not even close to the type of can't-miss franchise D-linemen like Peppers, Ware, Bruce Smith, Reggie White or Suh.

    We may never get in this high spot again for decades. And we cannot afford to whiff on top-of-the-draft D-Linemen like Cleveland did on Wembley, Warren and Courtney Brown. Like Jacksonville did on Derrick Harvey, like Buffalo did on John McCargo, like Denver did on Jarvis Moss and like Atlanta did on Jamaal Anderson.

    We aren't competing for the Lombardi next year anyway (even though Jacksonville improved from a league-low in sacks in one off-season like we are hoping to do)..

    Good thinking on McD and Orton to SF (although I can see Minnesota too). I'd love Franklin, but doubt SF would need to trade him to us (instead of a 3rd rounder). Kendall Langford of Miami is also under-rated (although not as dominating as Franklin… who also helped Justin Smith reach his potential).

    And Miami may also want some insurance for Henne now that Pennington is retiring and Thigpen isn't quite ready (they just don't have the runners Kyle needs… well at least not currently)

    Minnesota's Letroy Guion is 6-4, 310 and looks and plays much bigger. He pushed around Philly's O-line and I could more-easily see him being obtained for Orton (if they don't want to give a high-enough draft-pick).

    But Franklin, Guion or Miami's Kendall Langford are all up-and-comers that would start for Denver (and I like Vickerson and Bannan as contributors). I just wish Jamal Williams had showed up before week #14 this year.

    It wasn't exactly an uncovered drop. Similar to RB Lance Ball's shielded drop against the Raiders, Lloyd's “drop” has mitigating circumstances (including the sun in his eyes).

    But the main problem is the way Tebow's long passes haven't YET hit anyone in stride over their shoulder. Instead, some seem to rapidly descend or turn into jump-balls.

    After all, Lloyd has shown that anything within 5 yards is within his possible grasp and superior body-control (and nearly batted Tebow's second-to-last desperation heave– while sandwiched in between two defenders– to #17 Britt Davis…. while he was still in the back of the end-zone before moving up).

    And if we play “if-and-maybe” how's about KR Cassius Vaughn and the onside-kick recovery that kept it that close to begin with? I just wish Vaughn was returning kicks all year long instead of the slower-accelerating Decker and Thomas (as, ahem, some of us were suggesting).

    You can't learn quick-release (or one of Jason Campbell's last five QB coaches would have taught him that by now).

    Esiason, Young and Stabler all had more-compact deliveries coming into the league (when you are mostly a finished product).

    You are correct about improving anticipation and shaving some milli-seconds off the time between the read and the pass being spun from his fingers. But I can't see how he can make his delivery more compact.

    Of course, I'm no expert. And if we keep him around, I desperately hope I'm wrong. The kid has heart and lights up what was a soggy team and fan morale.

    I haven't heard anything on the settlement with McDaniels, but he was set to earn $3.2M in 2011 and slightly higher in 2012. It is likely less, but may not be substantially lower. Bringing in a 6-7M dollar man to coach seems prohibitive. They will be looking to scrimp wherever they can, at least until the new CBA is revealed.

    It's going to interesting no doubt. While we desparately need defensive help I agree, it would be very very difficult to pass on Luck if a deal was there. I really like what I've seen from TT, but watching Luck right now in the Orange bowl… he is definitely the real deal.

    The question is, what do you then do with Tebow?

C'mon now! you guys must be smokin that shit if you actually think tebow is a lost cause. we need Defence Defence Defnece!!! keep the #2 and pick up the best Defencive player in the draft. and we actually already have 2 2nd round picks. the one we got from the fins and our own. we should trade one down so we have 2 1st rounders. Orton obviously stays put(duuuuuh). if he goes whos there to help tebow learn the ropes. u don't actually think he can start yet do you? and before all the haters start crying foul, just because i said tebows gonna be the man doesn't mean i meant right this damn second. patience is a virtue people. build the team around the qb so orton will have an easier time next year. a better defence helps the offence and a better line helps the qb. we need a smart, productive qb to keep guiding tebow. Levon zevon u must be on that rock with all that “inaccuracy” jibber jabber!!! give an example! u mean like the pass to ball in the endzone against the raiders that was dropped? or the two to gaffney IN STRIDE? or the one to lloyd in the back of the endzone? or the 2 to lloyd to the sideline against the chargers where only his guy could catch it? gee that was sooooo inaccurate! i guess chuckin it from ur own 40 and hittin the corner of the endzone perfectly is considered a “jump ball.” u should move to buffalo and be there GM cuz ur about as good at player evaluation as their current GM. Andrew luck is not mark sanchez. one year does not make u a sure fire hall of famer in the nfl. i agree with peterson and especially marcel darius.

    You guys keep forgetting he (Tebow) has not had much practice time with the first team. I personally am not worried about his funky throwing motion. Rivers, Montana, the list goes on, etc. all had/have funky throwing motions, especially when throwing the deep ball.

    Things Tebow will be working on for certain in the off season is studying films of the various defenses around the league, timing with his receivers. He can't really expand his repertoire of plays in his head since we have no idea who is going to be the HC and their system.

    Patience people, patience. No one seems to have it anymore.

    I agree. Luck will be a flop. And you can quote me on that. I saw him underthrow wide open receivers yesterday. If he can't hit a receiver in stride in college (Tebow could and did. Go watch some youtube videos if you don't believe me) he has little chance of doing so in the N.F.L. (Can you say, “Heath Shuler”)

    I would take Ryan Mallett (Junior and not in the draft) or Dalton from T.C.U. before I would take Luck.

    I disagree with the notion that his delivery is messing him up and not

    his anticipation. He has not had a problem with having the ball

    stripped while throwing, he has a problem with not hitting the receiver

    in the proper window which is exactly an anticipation issue.

    agree some sort of orton package three team possibly with buffaloand arizona send orton to arizona get a second rounder switch our first with buffalo if luck is there and hopefully get a second or third for switching them
