Denver Broncos interim head coach Eric Studesville quickly ended the “Tim Tebow to start!” groundswell that followed the announcement of Josh McDaniels‘ firing yesterday.

Kyle Orton is still the starter, Studesville said. Orton will start for the Broncos Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, and the team will continue to evaluate Tebow (and every other position) as usual.

Studesville also said offensive coordinator Mike McCoy will take over playcalling duties. All other staff members, including QB coach Ben McDaniels, will remain in place and are “on board.”

Stay tuned for more thoughts and quotes from the press conference later today.

  • flbronc

did mccoy call plays in carolina?

  • Big_Pete

    This is absurd.
Tebow must start to get the new head coach some “real” game footage of him in the NFL and in real season situations. How will the next coach know if they should draft a QB next year or not? Playing Tebow will show that he either A) is completely incompetent, or B) has some sort of potential.
The only reason to not play tebow right now is to “show the players that we haven't given up on the season.”
Well guess what? Firing the head coach with 4 weeks left shows the team that you gave up on the season.
Sure I hear that starting Tebow should wait till the last 2 games (at home), but honestly, it doesn't get any easier than the Cardinals to introduce him to the NFL.
Play Tebow right now. The season is over with, and the front office has given up on the season. The fans know it, the players know it, and the coaches know it.
Time to see what the kid has. Yes, he will struggle and make rookie mistakes. That's why you play him when the season is lost, instead of having him make those same exact mistakes at the beginning of a season that is still full of hope and expectation.

  • vince_mairne

Here is a theory Pete….Maybe the Broncos are thinking about trading Tebow this offseason. It's funny how they won't let him start. Is it because has hasn't developed; hasn't grasped the offense; isn't the QB we thought he was. Without anyone other than the Broncos having any real knowledge of him and how he progressed, he is still worth that 1st round pick. Just a theroy.

  • Big_Pete

I'm not sure anyone but possibly Buffalo would have any interest in him. I think at this moment, sitting Tebow is ruining his trade value.
Tebow and our #1 to Buffalo for their probably #1 overall pick so we could get Luck might work. But honestly, I think sitting Tebow right now just diminishes his trade value, cause if he can't run our “spread” offense effectively, what hope does he have at running a more pro style offense with any competency at all?

  • robtink242

2 and half quarters until he stinks the field enough for Tebow to play.

  • Skipperpea

To the Bills, Jags, Seahawks, or Miami… trade could happen

  • flbronc

no way would buffalo pull that trade. even if he came in and played good, why would they?

i think that not playing him keeps his trade value relatively high, for someone who last year was willing to spend a second round or third round choice on him. nobody but us put first round value on him, so thinking we would get a first in return is crazy (i understand you proposed a package including swapping firsts and not straight up). by not playing him we may not get as much as possible if he were to play and kill it, but we are also not exposing him to potentially playing horrible and diminishing his value further.

  • AKfan

They might be saving him for those last 2 home games. Still get a little look at him before going into the offseason and give fans a reason to come to those to last games.
Also give some very, very inexperienced coaches a couple of games to get the hang of running the show. I agree though the team needs to know if Tebow has any promise as a long term starter in Denver before this season ends.

  • Karone

Maybe they want to get more value from Orton so they could trade him in the off season. Hopefully they do so Orton can go to a “real” team that respects him.
The Bills are one game worse than us and you don't see fans trashing Fitzpatrick(who is not even close to being as good as Orton).

  • natreggra

If we removed Plummer at 7-4 a season after an AFC Championship game appearance to try an unproven rookie, why not put Tebow in now?

  • NMBronc

    So 5-17, here we come.

Orton is starting because Tebow is clearly not ready. If he was, I am guessing Josh would have played him. Tebow is either completely worthless as an NFL QB or a huge reach in the 1st round as a project.

Either way, glad McGone is not going to running our draft this year.

  • Nisse

    orton>plummer

  • areferee

    From Wiki:

In McCoy's 9th season with the Carolina Panthers McCoy could see early development in his three young quarterbacks. During his time McCoy consistently worked with Jake Delhomme, playing a huge role in how Jake Delhomme would play his career.

On gameday McCoy was the voice of the quarterbacks. When a play was called Delhomme would hear McCoy's voice.

  • areferee

Relax folks. Merely stating that Orton remains the starter dictates nothing about the amount of playing time Tebow may see. I suspect he will see an increasing amount of snaps, up to and including a start or two at home.

  • Peterthegreat

Orton has had plenty of chances to change everybody opinion on him and all he has done is confirm it!!

  • NMBronc

Disagree. Plummer was at least a 'starting' QB. Not saying I want him back, but Plummer was decent.

  • NMBronc

i would take Fitz over Orton any day.

  • MrPete

Maybe Studesville thinks he can be the next HC. In doing so he just wants to put up wins, to make a case for his future employment. All these coaches have to know with McDaniels gone, chances of them being here next is very slim. The sad part of this is the team is no better hands with Studesville. He has no experience as a HC and is already making bad decisions.

The Broncos don't owe Orton anything. If Orton can handle the Quinn an Tebow situation like a professional, he should clearly be able to handle doing what is right for the TEAM. If we the fans and the media can see Orton isn't a franchise QB, what makes any of you think anyother team will want him. I don't see huge trade value in Orton. He should be kept as a career backup.

Most likely all the coaches will be gone so what does their opinions matter about Tebows value. Can someone please do whats right for the team and not themselfs for a change. Sometimes doing the unpopular thing will get you more respect. I am looking to find one person in this organization I could give a little respect to, and the are making it dificult.

  • Nisse

if the broncos would cut orton at the end of the season, he would be an instant starter for 15 other teams and a very hot free agancy target.

the guy has shown he has what it takes to start.

    is he perfect? no

is he a solid starter? yes

  • AKfan

Wrong, Plummer was a winner, a playmaker who could run for a 1st down and a guy who could lead his team back in the 4th qrt. Orton, not so much.
Orton is the ideal back-up qb.

  • Nisse

you should give orton a lot of respekt. he is young, solid and way better than most qbs in the league.

  • adrenaline27

Here is my theory. Eric Studesville is starting Orton because he feels that will give him the best shot at winning. Right now I believe that every coach is out for them selfs. He will not be our coach next season so he is going to do what ever he can to make himself look better. if he starts Orton and we win a few of the remaining games them he looks better for another team next year. If he dosent and starts Tebow, and it goes bad, then he looks bad and he is out of a job period.

To me whats best is to give Tebow some reps. Orton is not our future. We need to see if Tebow can be. The more we see him the better. Give the kid a chance to shine make some plays. If he plays and it shows just how much he is struggling then it will help everyone see for the selfs that its time to move in another direction

If they are starting Orton because he has deserved it from his playing this season and its only fair the team.. I say.. BS look at your record. I don't care if you throw for 5000 yards. They can't win a game. Something needs to change. If we are rebuilding then rebuild. Stop patching holes.

  • Nisse

are u kidding? if the 2005 plummer would have been the starting qb for denver this season there wouldnt have been a singel attempt at a 4th quarter comeback couse he would have thrown away the game in the 1st half.

  • Nisse

maybe a was a little hard on the old plumm, but i dont think another qb would have done much better in this team with this D and this running game.

im just angry with people who dont understand that this teams problem has nothing to do with the qb position.

  • Karone

Just what a “true” Bronco fan would say.
Hopefully Orton goes some place that kills the donkeys, then you people will be questioning Tebag. So the non stop search for a QB continues because you all are dumb. :P

  • KOrton18

KYLE ORTON IS BETTER THAN TEBOW….. GET OVER IT!!!!!!

Tebow was drafted to SELL jerseys… and sell them he has! KYLE ORTON IS A REAL NFL PLAYER!!!!! Not a scoial experiment!!!!

  • Pjdrobeck

I agree, I also see this a a great opportunity for Bowlen to step and highly suggest to Dudseville to make this move. He wouldn't be stepping on anyones toes here (since we don't have a HC). Mr Bowlen, show us you still have some stones and make this call. Worse case Tebow is a flop, best case you see potiental and can use your draft pics on our defensive needs.

  • MrPete

I do give Orton a great deal of respect. I am just being realistic, you have to look at this from a business point of view. Orton folds under pressure (which equals loses) and thats what seperates the good QB's in this league form the great QBs. I would like for the Broncos to keep Orton. But just as a back up. Not the leader.

  • crazykid

Personally, i believe there is no need to start Tebow. No need to throw him in the fire, and i dont want to give opposing coaches a chance to dissect the film on him over the offseason. They may find ways to fluster him and continue to use those scheme to ruin TEbow. I say let Orton play out the season, go to a deserved Pro Bowl, and trade him for 3rd and 6th round picks

  • natreggra

Just for the record, I'm a Plummer and Orton fan. I think they've both handled tough situations, done it professionally, and are underrated for what they bring to the game…at the same time, a lot of people are yelling for a “franchise quarterback” to be taken with our likely top ten pick in a draft that will be filled with defensive talent next year. The risk has already been taken, we already drafted Tebow, why not find out what he can do?

Honestly, I'm not sure our offense now, with everyone healthy, is that far off from where they were in '08. Thomas, when on the field, looks every bit as good as Marshall, without the off-field issues; Moreno looks likes finally starting to put things together and could be a dominate RB; seeing Decker in uniform reminds me of another #87; Brandon Lloyd is a legitimate deep threat that we haven't had for a long time; then there's the young o-line and Eddie Royal. Who's to say, with the right coach and system, why couldn't Tebow succeed with those pieces? And maybe not only succeed, but do it for a long time?

Bottom line, I don't want to see us pass up another chance for a long term anchor on the d-line to fix something that may not be broken, especially when we have someone sitting on the bench and we haven't given him a try!

  • Jadeezra

This bench Orton talk is bleeping ridiculous…. Come on people, you obviously dont know football or are grasping at straws cause the team sucks and its nothing to do with Orton.

  • NMBronc

I am not a real fan and we are all dumb because we don't think much of Orton. Really? That's it? That's all you got? Well allow me to retort. I know you are, but what am I?

  • kerry

wow what games have you been watching? Orton is a bum and always has been.

  • Jj

“KYLE ORTON IS BETTER THAN TEBOW….. GET OVER IT!!!!!!”… and you have based this on what? Has Tebow had any amount of playing time for you to make that assessment of how well he can play in the NFL? If you did go by what little he has played in the NFL and what he has done in College you still have no basis for your statement there, because he has been successful….. so get over it. LOL

  • Jj

Actually some of the people calling for Tebow to take some meaningful snaps now that the Bronco's playoff hopes are dashed do know football… you obviously don't… Tebow needs reps in real games before next season. Orton (Team Captain) led the team to a 3-9 season with no hopes for the playoffs this year… Its time for him to step aside because the Broncos obviously aren't planning on making him their franchise QB. They haven't even extended his contract beyond 2011….

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bagging on Orton, Hes been doing good as an individual this season, but as team Captain and QB you bear a lot of the responsibility for where the team is now. I'm just looking at what the situation, being last in the division and one of the worst teams in the league.

  • adrenaline27

Orton's not bad, hes just not our future period. Its time to move on and rebuild. We all need to face it. We have several players that are getting older and some that are at the end of there contract. I don't see us turning this mess around in just one season and Orton can only do so much. We need a vocal leader on the field and off in that position. I feel as if he is just playing a role. I say trade him in the off season and get something for him to help start rebuilding. Face it.. Orton will not and never will take any team to a Super Bowl.

  • Dad

take the qb skills challenge and orton is top 5 without a doubt. No other qb throws even close to as pretty a spiral. the bum from ND at right tackle is one of the biggest problems on the field. drafting tim and not selecting dline and lbs has been their biggest problem. hope orton someday gets his due.

  • anthony33

He has no choice but to start Orton for this game. Can't anyone see that? Orton has been the starter for 2 years (less 4 games) and has taken 90+% of the reps in practice. You cannot get a QB ready to start an NFL game with basically 2-3 days of full practice reps. Jeezuz people, wake up.

Tebow's time will come, maybe next week, maybe in 2 weeks, but is will come. Studsville would be doing a diservice to Tebow by handing him the wheel this Sunday.

  • anthony33

I know it was only a presser, but I kind if liked what I saw in Studes. Here's the immediate difference I see between him and McD. If McD starts screaming at a player or group of player in practice or a game, they are going to listen and respect him because of his title. They know full well if they react the wrong way they will end up like Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler and Hills. However, when he turns around they will hate him.

Studes on the other hand seems like a very honest and passionate guy that does not think he knows everything. Now, if starts screaming at you or a group of player in practice they will listen and respect him. Why… because if you don't listen he might beat the shit out of you. Because of his honesty and sense of humor… when he turns away the player will say “he's right, I gotta get my shit together”.

The difference: I think he has the ability to get players to run through a wall (or throw them through it) where McD messed with peoples minds.

Again, only one stupid press conference, but that's what I saw.

  • Skdog

this team lacks leadership…it begins with the coach. I believe the team will respond to a leader at Qb, is Orton a leader? Well has the team responded to him as their leader? not sure, I do believe that the defense has responded to Dawkins when he is on the field. This offense has only played well on a couple of occasions this season. the same can be said of the defense. Individually many players have done well, you look at the offensive line and see 2 rookies…..and Orton has not been beaten up even close to the amount Cutler has this season? Orton does not move as well either. I am rambling now, Orton is a solid Qb for sure, he needs to get his offense to believe in him , and Orton gives the team the best opportunity to win. Lets see how the team responds to the coaching change this weekend and evaluate again?

  • Coombssteven

Kyle Orton is a real NFL player. Is that a REAL statement?

  • Coombss

You're basing your reasoning as to why Tebow has not started on McDaniels . . .hello . . .the guy was ran out of town because he thought LaMont Jordan should get more carries than Hillis, Robert Ayers was a better talent than Clay Matthews, Matt Cassel is a better all around QB than Cutler. If the fact that McDaniels has refused to play Tebow shows anything its probably the fact that he is pretty good.

So what you are saying is he is wrong about every decision he made except for the one guy you believe in? Interesting logic jump. While you have made some excellent points, I am still on side of; Love Tebow's attitude, do not believe he will be a successful NFL QB.

  • NMBronc

Kyle Orton is a real NFL player. Very true, because Orton is the best backup in the league. He is also truly inpsiring when we are down by 30 and the opp Def is in prevent mode.

And yes, Tebow is likely a social experiment.

Wish we could see Quinn play in a real game to see if there is anything there.

  • adrenaline27

START TEBOW. I would rather sacrifice the remainder four games and and lose them then win any of them with Orton. Really we have nothing to lose. 1. We lose and get a high draft pick. 2. We can see if there is anything with Tebow, and it might help who we bring in. 3. This will give the fans something to cheer about and attend the last few home games. 4. Orton is not our future, although he is a good qb its time to see what we have in our first round pick. 5. Pride, Lets see just how these players can perform when all they have is pride. The ones that don't can take a hike. At this point we really have nothing to lose, the only people that have anything to lose are the coaches. They will do what they can to make them selfs look better. Give the fans some excitement going forward. You have four games left. Take advantage of them to evaluate your players, and that dosent mean just at the QB position.

  • jimery

Nothing to do with Orton? I guess it was someone else who threw a pic against the Jets, fumbled on the last snap against the 49ers and again threw passes that bounced in front of his receivers against the Chiefs. You are right it's not his fault it must be the play calling.
If right now isn't the time for Tebow, when is?

  • jimery

Your right Orton is the best quarterback of a 3-9 team. Much respect for that.

  • areferee

…and he was a football player and not a Son of a … Coach!

  • Ryan Smtih

Are you out of your mind???? Kyle Orton is playing exceptional and is one of the top young QB's in the league. Why on earth would you start an inexperienced Tebow over your QB who has played exceptional all season. Kyle Orton has the 10th highest QB rating in the NFL right now and a ton more yards than all but maybe 2. Benching a guy like Orton just to “experiment” on Tebow is extremely amateur and this is the pro's.
