McDaniels

Josh McDaniels has been fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen confirmed Monday. McDaniels was fired both because of the team’s 3-9 record this season (11-17 in McDaniels’ tenure), as well as the knock on the team’s integrity the Spygate II video scandal stirred across the league.

The Broncos have just announced that  running back’s coach Eric Studesville is in as interim head coach.

Stay tuned, tonight will be very interesting.

i guess i should have added the 'unproven college coach' following unproven assistant in my post above.

yes, i think he has done a heck of a job at stanford, and deserves to be commended for it. i dont think that i would trust him to rebuild a troubled franchise at this point.

  • flbronc

agreed. i put cowher at 0% chance and gruden somewhere around a 10-15% chance.

  • Uzedonce

Bowlen to Nolen: “will you come back as DC?”

Nolen: “not with that thumb size prick in charge!”

Bowlen: “If I fire him and hire Troy, with a record of 38-18 at Air Force, who you worked with as an assitand with the Broncos, will you come back and make our Defense top 10 in every catagory like did with Miami this year?”

    Nolen: “okay”

Bowlen: “Done. I will do it today.”

  • herc_rock

Why would Nolen come back? He's gainfully employed with a franchise that isn't a national laughingstock right now.

  • TinFL

My hat is off to Pat Bowlen . . . thank you sir for making the difficult but correct decision . . . .

When the boat has chosen the wrong tributary . . . best to correct and find the true course . . .

    It might be not expediant . . . nor popular . . . but true to heart . . . Thank you . . . T

  • MiKey55

Gruden hates the raiders and has always been amazed by tim tebow wouldn't be blown away if that happened

  • herc_rock

Screw him. He'll get a chance to earn a spot like anyone else.

If he turns out to be a quality QB, then great. If not, he'll switch to fullback or safety and maybe thrive or he'll dig his heels in like BVP and be out on his ass.

  • flbronc

that is the only reason i think it is remotely possible he comes.

  • TheTroglodyte

They will get out of it because of spygate II. They had every right to fire him for not reporting the incident. It's in the clause.

  • homely

Jon Gruden sucke in Tampa Bay! 57-55 over-all, not a good idea.

Bill Cowher maybe, but I don't see it.

Nolan sucked in San Fran', but maybe we get Kubiak as an offense coordinator with Nolan as head coach and it all come together.

  • adrenaline27

    57 comments already. LOL

  • socal den fan

Why is everyone so pissed its not going to be 10 yrs of crap! Its a new era in denver!Bowlen needs to finish the job get rid of the gm and the rest of the dead weight and find the right pieces. how about jeff fisher he looks to be on the way out in tenn I think he would love to get this job.

  • Kreagermags

Ya, I think there's a guy named Luck out there come draft day… thoughts?

  • Patrick_mcmahon

I want Jeff Fisher! Either him or Vince has to go in TEN and the owner loves Vince. Number two would be Kubiak if the Texans let him go, and number three, Rob Ryan!

  • socal den fan

    I will ask him tomorrow!

  • kerry

Luck is a badass. with a new guy coming in Luck will be a priority because there is no way Orton and Quinn stay around and Tebow is a fullback-TE at best. bring in Luck i say. if not him then Ryan Mallet.

  • kerry

yeah how do you figure Mallet will be a bust? and with 2 2nd round picks and a high 1st we can EASILY move to number while unloading Tebow and Orton. plenty of ammo to move up for Andrew Luck.

  • kerry

for fuck sake would you PLLEEEAAASSEE stop with the whole “Tebow is a winner” bullshit. he had to be taught how to throw all over again and his skill set does NOT translate to the NFL. Gimmick college QB's NEVER work out. just ask Eric Crouch, Troy Smith, Alex Smith, Andre Ware, Akili Smith, Danny Weurffel, Rick Mirer. yet Pro Style QB's like Mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford and Matt Ryan do work out. Tebow is NOTHING in the NFL. there is a reason no team in their right mind wanted him high in the draft. only a dumbass named McD took him in the first round.

  • kerry

fuck that. we dont want some college coach. does Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino ring a bell. we need a real NFL coach like Cowher or Gruden. while i tend to think neither will come here, Brian Billick or Bill Parcells come to mind.

  • herc_rock

They can fire him for whatever reason they want. They still have to pay him. NFL HC contracts are guaranteed.

Even if there is a personal conduct clause that allows for termination of the contract, it's probably some vaguely worded bullshit (they always are) and the Broncos will have problems arguing that Spygate triggers that clause.

I haven't seen anywhere where someone has said they terminated his contract, just that he's been relieved of his duties. Trying to terminate it would be a cheapskate, asshole-ish, Al Davis type of move. I don't think Bowlen will try it. That type of shit doesn't exactly endear you to the next guy, especially if you're trying to go after a big name.

  • sky

thank god!!!!!!!!!the damage is already done tks ass bowlen!!!

  • anthony33

Bowlen, have a plan, you've got to be kidding. He and Ellis are the ass hats that hired this guy. Was that a good plan?

While everyone is jumping for joy just remember this… this is only a good move IF they hire the right guy this time.

McD sucked and Bowlen and Ellis are proving themselves to be idots. We'll see.

  • anthony33

    Another name… maybe… Charlie Weis.

  • anthony33

I think Harbaugh could do it. However, speaking of college coaches, what about Charlir Weis?

Yes, he failed at ND. Why? Because he is a pro coach. Look what he's done with KC. He is an older and much, much wiser and mature version of McD with one other major difference…. he knows how to treat people.

Dead serious… I think this guy can coach.

  • (dee)

We are a joke of a franchise right now.

What exactly is the plan? We're just the new Bills.

  • (dee)

If you wanted evidence that we are the new Bills, we just hired one of their ex-coaches as our Interim Coach.

  • reginald jaramillo

hey cj i like that i think he great happy holidays lol

  • TheTroglodyte

“They can fire him for whatever reason they want. They still have to pay him. NFL HC contracts are guaranteed.”

    Incorrect sir, check your facts.

  • Otis

Greetings from Chicago, and I'll second that!! Gud-bye, McD! Now WIN SOME DAMN GAMES ALREADY!! I'm an Orton fan from his rookie year, don't give up on the boy yet. However, Tebow can go anytime he wants.

  • http://www.robertclarkmtfs.com/ Robert Clark MTFS

Yes, Mark Sanchez is such a beast lol! You always crack me up.

  • MrPete

Kerry, this comes down to wants and needs. Yea! geting Luck would be great , but really its a want at this time. We need defensive players first and formost. Address our needs first. I would argue this is how we ended up with Tebow. He was definatly a want for McDaniels.

    DEFENSE-DEFENSE-DEFENSE

  • MrPete

I know this won't go over well with some of you, but I don't think Kubiak is the answer for turning this francise around. I think he is a great OC, and would love to have him back. But I don't think he is HC material. To turn this thing around with any speed, you are going to have to really get the right people. Would like to see Dungy/Fraiser, not to sure about Gruden. He has been out of coaching for awhile, and who knows if broadcasting has made him soft or is he the same Chucky we remember? I know I keep saying this but, whoever is hired, get them a strong GM.

  • http://twitter.com/DantePakistan Michael Land

Mallet doesn't like to study film, QBs that don't study, don't succeed.

  • Dsmaccurdy

    Good.

Def minded coaches: Fewell, Billick, Frazier (MN), or Rivera (SD)

Off minded coaches: Mularkey (Atl), Shannahan (Kyle), or Harbaugh

I could list others, but any these 7 would be solid hires. Part of the hiring process should be first hiring a real GM and not a 'Contract' guy.

Off Keepers: Clady, Beadles, Walton, Kuper, Royal, Thomas, Moreno and Lloyd.

Def Keepers: Bailey, Bannan, Ayers, Doom, Haggan, McBath, Syd, and Thomas

All else are playing for a job or proving they can stay healthy and/or sober. The Def is in shambles, but we also need a real starting QB.

We have 3 picks in the first two rounds….or 4 picks if we can trade down.

    This should be very interesting.

  • herc_rock

I'm not sure what part of that you think is incorrect, but none of it is.

If the Broncos can successfully argue that spygate violated some personal conduct/morals clause in his contract, then yes, they can terminate that contract and they don't have to pay him.

Gruden's remarks were not specifically about the Broncos, but about coaching in general for 2011:
    *************************************************
According to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, at the beginning of a teleconference to preview this week’s Monday Night Football game on Thursday afternoon, ESPN analyst Jon Gruden made it clear he is committed to the television network through the 2011 season, and will not pursue college or professional coaching jobs, including the Dallas Cowboys, this offseason. “I’m committed to ESPN, there's not a lot to add,” Gruden said. “I'm eager to get better at it, and there's been a lot of speculation the last few days, and for that, I'm sorry.” Gruden has been linked to the University of Miami job in the past couple of days, and has also been speculated as a potential Cowboys coaching candidate after the team fired Wade Phillips mid-season.

Other reports quote his high school age son as committing to him that he won't coach again until Jon Gruden II has graduated…2012.

  • areferee

Yes, just this past July of skin cancer at age 54. Tragic loss for him and his three daughters. They were college sweethearts at North Carolina State.
