The Denver Broncos‘ Week 12 performance against the St. Louis Rams can be described as a core of terrible football bookended by two quarters of splendor.
Wildly inconsistent, at any given time, Josh McDaniels‘ Broncos were either world-beaters or doormats.
They started the game much as they did the week before — on a 10-0 hot streak, and looking like an offensive juggernaut. Boosted by an offensive script and Knowshon Moreno‘s impressive runs, it appeared Denver would have no problem exploiting the Rams’ defense at will.
It wouldn’t last. That pace tempered significantly as the Broncos only tallied three points in over 30 minutes of football to follow.
Simultaneously, the defense fell apart, allow rookie QB Sam Bradford to career-highs in yards (308) and touchdowns (three) with seeming ease. The secondary showed its age again, and the front seven completely failed to register any type of pressure on the Rams’ young signal caller. The Rams took a commanding lead into the fourth quarter.
Then came the furious finish. Down 36-20 in the fourth quarter, the Broncos looked to Eddie Royal and Brandon Lloyd to bring them back into the game. The receivers delivered, and the Broncos had life, down 3 with under a minute to play.
However, a Chris Long sack followed by three straight Kyle Orton incompletions doomed the comeback, and the Rams held on to win 36-33.
Orton finished with 347 yards and three touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome his defense’s dismal performance.
Simply put, in the end, the Broncos’ good times didn’t outweigh the bad. The Rams (5-6) dominated the Broncos (3-8) more than the Broncos dominated them — and in Denver’s stadium, no less.
The Broncos next travel to the Kansas City Chiefs, whom they thoroughly defeated two weeks ago in Denver. The Chiefs will certainly be riding higher momentum and looking to turn their fortunes the second time around.
