The Denver Broncos‘ Week 12 performance against the St. Louis Rams can be described as a core of terrible football bookended by two quarters of splendor.

Wildly inconsistent, at any given time, Josh McDaniels‘ Broncos were either world-beaters or doormats.

They started the game much as they did the week before — on a 10-0 hot streak, and looking like an offensive juggernaut. Boosted by an offensive script and Knowshon Moreno‘s impressive runs, it appeared Denver would have no problem exploiting the Rams’ defense at will.

It wouldn’t last. That pace tempered significantly as the Broncos only tallied three points in over 30 minutes of football to follow.

Simultaneously, the defense fell apart, allow rookie QB Sam Bradford to career-highs in yards (308) and touchdowns (three) with seeming ease. The secondary showed its age again, and the front seven completely failed to register any type of pressure on the Rams’ young signal caller. The Rams took a commanding lead into the fourth quarter.

Then came the furious finish. Down 36-20 in the fourth quarter, the Broncos looked to Eddie Royal and Brandon Lloyd to bring them back into the game. The receivers delivered, and the Broncos had life, down 3 with under a minute to play.

However, a Chris Long sack followed by three straight Kyle Orton incompletions doomed the comeback, and the Rams held on to win 36-33.

Orton finished with 347 yards and three touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome his defense’s dismal performance.

Simply put, in the end, the Broncos’ good times didn’t outweigh the bad. The Rams (5-6) dominated the Broncos (3-8) more than the Broncos dominated them — and in Denver’s stadium, no less.

The Broncos next travel to the Kansas City Chiefs, whom they thoroughly defeated two weeks ago in Denver. The Chiefs will certainly be riding higher momentum and looking to turn their fortunes the second time around.

Shany never relly addressed that issue over his last yrs Marcus Thomas hs only D line pick we keep trying through free agency and not any big names Peppers would hve been nice. I think we have to try one more yr with him like people keep sying this rotating D coordinaters is not good and I doubt rotating Head coach would help. I hate being at the bottom but we can't fool ourselves and say that the Broncos have been dominate since Elway retired. Shanny wanted to prove he could be dominate as a coach but after the super bowl yrs we have been only mediocre. We have some pieces better than average recieves Thomas has shown flashes Eddie is good in the slot Brandon has been off the hook making Orten have a career yr. Hell yes I wish Hilis was here Cutler is hot and cold playing in division that is not that strong Scheffler exiled to Detroit Marshall is not really missed. See what Tebow can do and maybe we have a bargaining chip with Orton or Quinn there are lots of teams that need some help

Agreed cant stand bandwagon jumpers either on or off. Sure it is hard to see your team down but you have to root them on. We really could have won the Jets game the 49ers game even without spying we gave Indy more than they wanted. Just some lapses lack of consistancy and and some questionable call coaches and refs and we could be at 6 wins

Understand the frustration and the high expectations for the Broncos but everyone needs to take a step back. Our consistent 8-8 performance under Shanny and the illusion that we “just needed to tweak the D” was BS. Did anyone really think that rebuilding the team meant playoffs in a year? We all knew it was going to get worse before it got better. Two key positions on D and we are a very different team. One that scores 30 and limits teams to 20.

    Time to start speculating.

    Top coaching candidates:

Bill Cowher: Pros: Long term winning record and rebuilt the Steelers on the run a couple of times. Won with Cordell Stewart as QB. Cons: How much credit goes to the entire Steeler organization which is simply world class.

Jon Gruden: Pros: Did a great job lifting the radiers from a pile of ashes. Has won fairly consistently without the benefit of a great QB. Cons: Was up and down with Tampa and eventually cut loose… still not sure of the full story.

Marty Schottenheimer: Yes, Marty. Pros: Has won everywhere he's been. Stellar defenses. Won with multiple teams and won with average talent.

Cons: Never won or went to the big one.

Beyond those three I think you need to look at current offensive and defensive coordinators… I alreay mentioned Ron Rivera. I really like Leslie Fraizer too, but suspect he will be the Vikes HC next year. Beyond that I'd take a hard look at Jim Harbaugh too… he just has IT. Whatever IT is.

Well I guess some of you guys are getting your wish. I hope he is just saying this to get through the season.

Asked if head coach Josh McDaniels would be back with the team in 2011, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen responded, “Yes he will. I am not interested in making a coaching change.”

Bowlen could always change his mind, but for now it looks like McDaniels is safe. The same can't be said for his staff. Said Bowlen, “I am confident if (McDaniels) doesn't have the right people around him, that he should change coaches. It is something I have always left up to my coach. But I always reserve the right to make that change. I have done it on an isolated basis.”

Thank you …”guest” for posting, I was just about to mention that myself.

Our Leader Pat Bowlen has spoken… McDaniels will survive this season. I know other owenrs have also sent out this claims of job security for their coaches, however Pat Bowlen has the integrity Jerry Jones and Wilf Whats his face could only dream of having.

The last 2 seasons have been a learning experience for Josh no doubt, I think next year is key … he needs to get this time to the playoffs to survive..which is exciting for a Bronco Fan that has forgetten how it feels to cheer for a winner.

So for some of our college football fans out there… Who are some of top defensive lineman coming out next yr? Not a huge college football fan so curious what he have to look forward to in the draft. I know someone kind of listed some players in a previous article, but can't remember who.

As much as I loathe McDaniels in every way, it's fair to say that with Ayers and Dumervil healthy, with the offensive line and Moreno healthy, with a couple of calls/plays going our way, this team could have 6 or 7 wins. Would we be demanding McDaniels be fired if that were the case? I wish him gone, but a lot of what has gone wrong this season has nothing to do with his bad play calling or horrible personnel moves. Mind you, quite a lot of it has: Rams, Raiders, Niners games all tell the tale of abysmal coaching.

Here's what the pros and cons of firing McDaniels are likely to be, IMHO:

    Pros:
    1. Starting fresh, even in a losing season, at least revives the fans who have completely turned on McDaniels.
    2. Keeps him from making another series of horrific personnel decisions, not least in the draft.
    3. Puts us in position to get a truly great coach, rather than sticking with a dude who's currently clearly in over his head.

    Cons:
    1. More instability which will probably result in yet ANOTHER new defensive coordinator as well as personnel moves on the offense that will disrupt an otherwise good looking unit.
    2. About $7 mil in salary paying McD to hang out in his snuggie, rather than to a monster tackle or DE.
    3. Almost certainly yet another rebuilding year.

Whether or not McDaniels is fired, let's all make sure Bowlen gets one damned thing right for next year: ORANGE UNIS AS THE OFFICIAL, REGULAR HOME COLOR!!!

Here's another thought. Charlie Wies. Proven OC… failed as a college head coach in the most pressure cooker situation you could imagine, but picked up invaluable experience. You can see he is back home again in the NFL.

An older wiser and more more experienced version of McD. Why the hell not??? Plus I think he could attract an excellent coaching staff.

You REALLLY want another NE failed coordinator? Great choice man…….

  • Ic_bronco7

The thing is we didnt have to rebuilt the whole team all we needed was better Defence of players in sertine areas…and hes gotten almost nothing but offence in the draft..Mc dumass is good at one thing and thats getting new England REJECTS if Bill didnt want then y would u get them dosent make since go out there and find ur own talent like shanahan did..

  • Dont sound like a Chiefs fan

It is truly sad when people get excited that we ALMOST came back and won!!! Come on people!!! Quit worshiping McDaniels and open your eyes! See what he is. A CHEATING LOSER, there is nothing worse. Atleast Shanny brought 2 Super bowls a CLASS ACT!!!!!!
