Sobering truth from ESPN and longtime-Denver Broncos insider Adam Schefter: Josh McDaniels isn’t going anywhere.

According to Schefter, the Broncos will stick with (be stuck with?) their head coach through 2011:

Broncos scheduled to pay Josh McDaniels through 2012, Mike Shanahan through 2011. No way Pat Bowlen pays three HCs in 2011. McDaniels safe.

The reasoning is sound, but I actually disagree with Schefter on this one. If Bowlen feels the Broncos don’t have a chance in 2011 with McDaniels, is it worth $3 million more to him (loosely, the cost of hiring another coach) to make the Broncos a winner? I’d guess yes.

The question is whether Bowlen will have reached the point where he believes the Broncos don’t have the best coach possible by season’s end.

Let's wait until the end of the season and then we can judge if Josh McD should be fired. We got a lot of game left to play, don't give up on Josh McD yet.

  • mikebirty

but its not just Josh is it? its everyone else on the staff.

Here's a question, would you take two seasons of 4-12 if it meant two seasons of 12-4?

  • anthony33

    Kyle,

I could have sworn I read that Bowlens contract obligations to Shanny ended when he signed with Washington… no?

  • AKfan

If Denver season falls apart and they are going into the last 2 weeks of the year at 3 and 11, his job will be serious jeopardy. Denver's last 2 games are at home and have the potential to be played in front of a half empty stadium if the team is totally out of things. Losing all of the concession and parking revenue will have an impact on Bowlen. If it comes to that McD should consider giving Tebow the starting job to keep fans interested.
That said hopefully they will come out after the bye a new team and end the season looking like a team on the rise with no question surrounding the coach.

  • TheTroglodyte

I also thought that was the case.

  • http://twitter.com/dxmanning Joshua Manning

Depends, if the Broncos were 12-4 and lose in the very first round in the playoffs then NO! It's not worth it.

  • broncoman24

I believe what happened is when he signed with the Redskins, the Broncos have to pay the difference. For instance if the Broncos owed Shanny 5 million for 2011 and he signed with the Redskins for 2 millions then we would be responsible for the remaining 3 million he was owed. I could be wrong. Anyone know for sure?

  • Mike Shanahan

Yes. You are correct. That is how my contract works.

  • broncosman24

When things have gone this bad, I can't see us possibly turning it around. That being said, I do not think it would be to our benefit to fire Josh now. I think we should wait till the end of the year before making any changes. I also believe that Josh is not the coach for us. He may eventually be a good coach, but we do not have the time or patience to wait that long. Maybe I am being negative (I like to think of it as being realistic). I have done the positive thing for too many years. It time to move on.. I am hoping that when the times comes for us to get rid of Josh (and it will come in my opinion) there will be some good coaches avail. My worry is that we will wait to long and no will be available. Something that Bowlen should of considered before getting rid of Shanny. I would also like to see us pick up a good defensive minded coach. We will see. Go Broncos!!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Hi Mike! How did benching McNabb work out for ya?

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Concessions yes, parking no. All of Mile High's parking is pre-paid at the beginning of the year like season tickets. It's the smaller independent lots that would lose out. Not that I would be upset about that, they're blood suckers.

  • broncoman24

Yeah, but whose to say that will happen. That is a big risk to take. You say that it isn't Josh, but everyone else on the staff. Who do you think chose those coaches? I want them to win just as much as you do, but he is not shown an improvement from last yr to this yr. The team is actually getting worse.

  • broncoman24

    Lol

  • flbronc

if you can mcd after two seasons, how long do you give the next guy to turn it around? we had three non playoff seasons under shanny, now two under mcd (assuming that we don't win out and take the division). if we bring in a new coach, who will likely want to bring his style players and can lots of our current ones… how long are you willing to give them to make the playoffs?

  • flbronc

i am torn between calling for his head and giving him another year… i honestly don't know the answer. Half of me thinks it is plausible that mcd can get us back to the playoffs and contending than a coaching change (even a big name coach- gruden, cowher, etc…). we need a better talent evaluator and a better defensive staff though.

  • Raymond martin

hay broncos fans i think we should try and get randy moss

  • jasonandrew76

Umm fellas?? I dont know about you, but Ive known all along that this wasnt going to be our year. With the amount of injuries we have sustained even before the season started I knew we were looking at an “average at best” type of season. Comments on here lead me to believe that some here thought we were bound for the Superbowl and McD is screwing up all the plans!!! We lost Doom and to make it worse, Ayers on the other side. We have a different OLine configuration on a weekly basis due to injuries. We have a seriously depleted secondary. What coach, including Christ himself, can win consistently with these issues?

Not to be a “debbie downer” or glass half empty type of person here, but you had to have seen this coming. Next year will be the true test for this team, barring serious injury/lockout.

This year will go a long way to formulating solid depth for next season. If we can get everyone back at full health and have some good luck on the injury front during the season next year then this should be a competitive team. Add in some premium draft picks (DLine PLEASE!!!!!) which we will most likely acquire from finishing amongst the bottom feeders and we should be looking even better.

I know its fun to throw McD under the bus, but dont act as if this team is any good right now and the coaching is holding us back (that would be the case for the Bengals). We are simply out-manned right now (anyone see Goodman at 60% in coverage yesterday??)

  • Yukafrut

Bowlen should fire McDaniels and hire Cowher for the next season

  • anthony33

Anyone else have a feeling this is going to end up like Belichick's complete failure in Cleveland only to move on to NE and become one of the top 5 coaches of all time?

With way things have been going, I wouldn't be surprised.

  • areferee

    Oh, COME ON, MAN!

This isn't about the man, just the playoffs or the record. It's about self-respect. It's about the franchise. It's about the tens of thousands who have shelled out thousands over the years in support of the Broncos, good and bad.

It's about suffering through the season with a team that plays as though they are unprepared, unmotivated and uninspired. It's about losing the support of the faithful by an organization that is long overdue in expressing its concern for the fans.

If it's just about money, (and I suspect it IS), then we will continue with the status quo, the mediocrity and the silence.

    We all deserve better.

  • AtomicLeo

Bowlen needs to hire a real GM. Made a big mistake giving someone without ANY head coaching experience that much power in the organization. The new GM would have final say over football decisions. Fire Ellis and Xander to pay for the new GM. The GM could evaluate McDaniels next year and decide to keep or ditch solely on his coaching ability.

  • El Pana

    no way!

I think we have very good receivers

We don't need another trouble maker,

    its enought with McDaniels!!!

  • areferee

    Hey Mike,

Kiss my redskin! (Fore and aft!)

  • areferee

    Excerpt from the Washington Post:

    {Under terms of his new contract, Shanahan has agreed to a deal that is expected to pay him approximately $7 million per year. The Broncos fired Shanahan following the 2008 season and owed him $14 million on his previous contract. They have agreed to pick up approximately $3.5 million each in 2010 and 2011, according to a Denver Post report.}

  • raymond martin

    then put tebow in

  • raymondmartin

    hell ya he dose

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

I think the impending lockout makes all this moot. Right now the ownership is heading toward a lockout and nobody seems to be doing anything to try and stop it, because both sides believe they're right and both sides are gearing up to try and deal with a work stoppage.

So there may be no or not very much football in 2011, which IMO would be a total disaster. Maybe the NHL has recovered from the strike a few years ago but I think the NFL's higher profile would take a pretty serious hit if there isn't football on schedule next year.

And if there's no football, there's no point in firing the coach and hiring a new one to sit around.

  • AKfan

Agreed although it sounds like Ellis is more of a buddy than employee and will never be fired. Chiefs and Broncos both decided to copy Patriots model. Both took a chance on 1st time coaches. Then the similarities ended. Chiefs hire experienced GM and experienced former head coaches as coordinators to help out the young coach. Cheifs went with one question mark and three proven commodities. Denver hires 1st time gm, 1st time o-coordinator, 1st time d-coordinator to with 1st time head coach. Predicable results have followed.

  • Broncobuff

“If” the season falls apart? I'm pretty sure we are there.

  • http://twitter.com/dxmanning Joshua Manning

Yep, your right. The team is bad, I mean COME ON!!!! We lost to the WORST team in the NFC — the 49ers…… Well……. the 2nd WORST team in the NFC. The WORST team in the NFC is the Cowboys.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

That's my greatest fear at this point.

  • Raymond martin

    broncos should start tim tebow

  • da Bear's

your Ok in Denver you already have your replacement team ,replacement QB for Cuttler replacement WR for Marshall ,and no defense , ex Broncos Fan , New Bear's fan

  • anthony33

    AGREE…

Bowlen needs to hire a competent GM, Xanders is too inexperienced. It's like hiring an account straight out of college to be the CFO of a large corporation… DISASTER.

Not sure if it's McD or Xman calling the shots, but neither of them seem to have a clue.

    Didn't even look at Torain…

Didn't pick up Blount… something like 147 yards yesterday

    Traded Hillis… know that story

    Moreno: Average at best

Traded Scheffler (altought we don't use tight ends to catch)

    Whiffed on Lynch

  • anthony33

    Agree

I will shocked if it happens, but I would like to see it.

    – We all Know Orton is not the long or mid-term answer.

    – We will most likely finish the year with a top 5-7 pick at worst.

    – There are 2 or 3 very good QB's coming out this year.

    – I would think you would like to know what Tebow has in live action and determine if he's the long term answer, if he's not, then your whole draft strategy changes for 2011. You need to know.

    – The question is, will McD pull the trigger… I think not!

  • Nisse

they didnt draft blount, but u dont know if they tryed to pick him up.

and when titans released him, they couldnt pick him up before tampa.

  • Nate

I say fire Mcjoker before he runs any more talent out of denver cut our losses before they get any worse

  • (dee)

I hate this.. Fire McDaniels because he is the problem… sure fire him and hire frigin JOHN FOX as our savior.

Mcdaniels will be a great coach, and if we fire 2 coaches in 3 years … then the Denver Broncos are the joke of the NFL regardless of their record.

  • Nate

so losing to the raiders by 52 doesn't make us the joke of the league

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

“The shareholders” as my friend Waylon put them.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

Bears fans aren't too happy right now either.

I'm still a fan of Cutler but this really is the season he needs to prove it and he's not doing it.

  • Wally

I was a supporter of Mcdaniels but recently I'm changing my mind. My reasoning is I don't see a team that is playing with heart they look like they are half-assing it which is either a lack of motivation (coaching issue somewhat) or a team that doesn't believe in the coach's plan. And don't care anymore. I can't believe a team could take a beating like they took from the Raiders and not come out smashing people it was like they have any pride. I think if they don't make the playoffs (which only a miracle could accomplish) Mcdaniels should go before he cuts or trades off any other good players.

  • adrenaline27

I just don't think McD is the problem. Look the the players he traded away. What have they done? We needed to clean house and he did just that. We all got spoiled winning 6 games to start of last season. I just don't see how you can turn over a franshise in two years and expect them to be in the top of the league… Not when you are changing your QB. Give it a chance.. Look at the Bengals.. they won every game in there division last year and now they have more talent and have the same record. Look at the cowboys… This is a weird NFL season.. Chill with the fire McD stuff.. Its NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.. Get over it or find a new team to cheer for.

  • Wally

I'm not saying he's the only problem there are a lot of issues but I just can't get past the fact that the team just doesn't look like they are buying into him. I look at the coach for Buffalo he's not winning but his team plays their butts off for him every week. They give him everything they got. If I saw that from this team I would say yeah give it more time but they just aren't doing that. So either he needs to change his approach or something, get the team to find and play with the pride I haven't seen yet. The pride that all the great teams play with. I understand that it's hard when your losing to have pride, but really at least leave it all on the field.

  • http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2582236 Elway4Life

Give McDaniels till the end of the year to try and turn things around. Which he probably won't. Hopefully by that time McDaniels won't have run any more of our players out of town too. Then sign Bill Cowher next year. I think it would be a perfect match and exactly what our Broncos need.

  • anthony33

I will say this… that is exactly what the raiders did (changing coaches every 2 years), but seem to have settled in with Cable. They sucked for the last two years, but on occasion showed signs of life.

Now look at them… that is a pretty damn good team.

Still not happy, but the Broncos have at times showed signs of life.

McD isn't going anywhere. And I say the time to play Tebow is NOW.

  • Bob T

McDaniels is a bust. His arrogance and blinders will make it impossible for him to ever succeed as a head coach. He makes moves based on emotion and his immature temper rather than what's best for the team. Lastest example is Peyton Hillis. I understand Peyton is a great guy, team player who everyone likes. Plus the guy is a steamroller. Just look what he is doing Cleveland who has no better offensive line than the Broncos. Time to start lining up Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden. We need a proven winner and not a head case!!!

  • tlb

Hiring Cowher is like hiring McCartney in Boulder—wishful thinking. Who says he even wants the job or wants to leave his cush broadcasting job??

  • MeOMy

That is exactly what I think will happen with McDaniels. I also think it's what it is going to take in order for him to become that great coach. A lot of great coaches had to fail some place else first. It takes getting fired for them to turn in their ego and figure out what went wrong.

  • (dee)

Agreed Anthony, but look at Cable…he's had terrible losses and even assaulted a player! There several calls for him to be fired but he's still there.

McDaniels is 10x the coach Cable is…. give him time!
